In today's ongoing urbanization and 4.0 industry, there is an increasing demand on urban design approach to be innovative and inclusive to handle these emerging issues. As an answer to these challenges, and in order to co-create innovation through the involvement of aware users in a real-life setting, the concept of living labs has emerged. However, to date, the definition of "Living Labs" is different between fields and regions in theworld. Some interpret theLivingLab as an approach, others as a single project, and some as a specific place-and some still do not know. In this paper, to better understand this concept and its practical application, we present our overview of previous literature on this topic and then we recount the specific situation in Vietnam through three Living Lab workshops conducted in Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province, Vietnam in the last three years. Since then, we have tried to come up with an empirically based definition of a contextual living laboratory concept that is appropriated for Vietnam. We also conclude with a discussion on the role and significance of the living laboratory in implementing urban planning, urban design and landscape projects in Vietnam.

Hand lay-up Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP), made of either carbon or flax textiles, were considered in this study and were subjected to water immersion at 40 degrees C over 24weeks. Tensile tests were carried out periodically to assess themechanical properties of the composites and Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring was simultaneously realized to characterize the different microstructural damage mechanisms during loading. Maximum force per unit width, stiffness and ultimate strain were determined based on tensile testing data whereas frequency features and number of events were extracted and cumulated from AE signals. The obtained results showed that themechanical properties of composites were significantly reduced meanwhile a modification of failure mode over 24 weeks was observed. Moreover AE signals analysis allowed a quantification of the level of damage. It also provided a discrimination of the different damage mechanisms and clarified how each mechanism contributed to failure.

Column base connections are designed and erected with various details to transmit the induced forces in steel moment frames to the foundation. One of the prevalent configurations is using an assembly of vertical stiffeners on exposed base plates (i.e., stiffened column bases) to reduce the required base plate thickness;nevertheless, their cyclic behavior was unknown before this study. Moreover, previous research has claimed that setting nuts and washers, also known as leveling nuts, might alter the connection load path due to the stiffer nut support rather than the grout pad. This paper examines the effects of leveling nuts on stiffened connections' performance;experimentally and analytically. The testing program evaluates the response of four specimens with stiffened column bases to the seismic excitation. The most critical observation was the punched concrete under the foundation (approximately at the location in which bolts are placed) that led to the change in load path - and ultimately variation in behavior - compared to base connections constructed without leveling nuts. Finite Element simulations also confirm the development of the compression force in anchor rods which is attributed to leveling nuts usage. This alternative load path is not considered in the design, and bolts are solely designed for tension forces;compression is expected to be resisted by the grout pad and concrete. In summary, this study demonstrates that the location of leveling nuts dictates the connection behavior while they are only utilized for construction purposes and are not considered in the design procedure.

Circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns have many advantages compared to rectangular or square ones such as higher confinement efficiency and more appealing aesthetic appearance. The differences between the mechanical properties and behavior of FRP reinforcement with respect to steel include, but not limited to, the linear elastic behavior of FRP without yielding, lower strain capacity and different compressive and shear strengths. These properties significantly affect the response of FRP-RC columns as they directly affect confinement behavior. In addition, the seismic response and energy dissipation are greatly affected when FRP reinforcement is used. Therefore, developing independent code provisions for FRP-RC members is necessary. The experimental data available for FRP-RC circular columns under seismic loading, especially columns constructed with high-strength concrete (HSC), is very limited. Hence, the current provisions of the Canadian code for FRP-RC columns are very conservative, particularly for HSC, compared to those for steel-RC counterparts. In this study, two full-scale GFRP-RC circular columns were constructed and tested under a simultaneous seismic and axial loading. One specimen was constructed using HSC with 85 MPa concrete compressive strength, while normal-strength concrete (NSC) with 35 MPa was used for the other specimen as reference. Both test specimens had 350-mm diameter, 1,750-mm shear span, 1.2% longitudinal reinforcement ratio, with 85 mm spiral pitch. The results showed that the confinement requirements of the Canadian code for circular columns could be too conservative for NSC columns, while this is not the case for HSC ones, which need much more confinement reinforcement.

With the increase in demand for energy, the energy conservation of the buildings has become important. In this paper, we propose a generic model for predicting the energy consumption of public building. The power usage of theCentral Taiwan Industrial Innovation Park (CTIIP) would be used to exemplify the model. The methods of linear regression and various machine learning techniques were applied for the prediction. The experimental results demonstrate that the prediction model is reliable and feasible.

Asymmetric Friction Connections (AFCs) are used to dissipate seismic energy. The AFC hysteresis loop shape has been described as rectangular. However, recently, testing of AFCs with long slotted plates (i.e., 200 mm slot length), showed the hysteresis loop is trapezoidal. This paper proposes an AFC sliding mechanism that explains such trapezoidal hysteresis loop shape. A simple AFC elastic model performed in MASTAN 2 was used to verify the proposed mechanism. It is shown the trapezoidal hysteresis loop shape is produced by prying forces developed between the slotted and fixed plates and at the AFC clamped zone. While in some areas of the AFC clamped zone, the prying forces move the fixed and slotted plates apart, in other areas of the AFC clamped zone, they increase the interface force between these plates. As a net result of this mechanism, the friction resistance of the AFC increases. The proposed mechanism agrees well with experimental data for AFCs with Bisalloy 500 shims.

This paper proposes a flexible approach to exploit digital data from building information models (BIM) by calling Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) using Representational State Transfer (REST) architectures, from which an application of Virtual Reality (VR) running on mobile devices is built. By adding these techniques, the application can address retrieving information from Common Data Environment (CDE) stored on a server, view the BIM model, and allow users to interact with data associated with each object in a virtual environment. Research results help software developers, engineers, managers to easily exploit M&E data and increase efficiency in the operation and management of the building.

Many buildings are already realized with elements made of textile reinforced concrete. This innovative composite material offers numerous advantages, such as low concrete covers and a good corrosion resistance. Many aspects of textile reinforced concrete constructions have mostly been investigated, for example the bending and bond behavior of textile reinforced concrete members. However, there are still largely unknown fields of research such as the load case "concentrated load" in facade panels which are caused, for example, by the suspension of the panels. So far, there is no general design approach for this case and a gap in knowledge was identified. Due to an increasing application of textile reinforced concrete elements, the design of thin panels under concentrated load is of great importance. This paper presents the results of the experimental investigations on carbon reinforced concrete members under concentrated load. In addition to the test results, first conclusions for carbon reinforced concrete members for such load cases are presented.

Pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) profiles are increasingly finding their way in civil engineering structural applications. The design of GFRP connections between profiles is of great relevance, as they influence the members' deflections and often govern design at ultimate limit states, being prone to brittle failure modes. The first part of this paper presents an experimental campaign on the monotonic and cyclic behaviour of beam-to-column connections using stainless steel cleats. Stainless steel was chosen for the cleats owing to its corrosion resistance (compatible with GFRP) and its ductility. In order to maximize strength and/or ductility, several cleat configurations were tested, varying their wall thickness, length, number of bolts and back flange reinforcement. The results show that this connection system, particularly with back flange reinforcement, presents significant ductility and energy dissipation capacity. In the second part of the paper, a design-oriented analytical study is presented, based on the component method and (common) steel structural design procedures, to estimate the stiffness and strength of the connections - the method was able to predicted with reasonable accuracy the behaviour of the connections.

As a widely used support form in tunnel support, the support effect of steel arch is influenced by the row distance between steel arches. In F8 fault fracture zone of the North Main Canal of Letan Reservoir in Guangxi, the support system of "steel arch + shotcrete" in this faulted cavern section was equalized with elastic modulus and yield stress by using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, and the characteristic curves of rock support of deeply buried circular cavern under modified axisymmetric loading were obtained. The sensitivity analysis and optimization study of the spacing between steel arches were conducted by using FLAC(3D). The results show that with the increase of steel arch spacing, the cavity wall displacement increases, the support reaction force decreases nonlinearly, and the radial displacement and plastic zone around the cavity continue to increase. When the distance between steel arches >600 mm, the deformation of cavern perimeter changes abruptly and the plastic zone increases significantly. Based on comprehensive analysis, the optimization suggestions of steel arch are proposed.
