Frost heave is a long-recognized issue contributing to the railway track upheaval in cold regions. Generally, frost heave is believed to happen in the subgrade layer of transportation infrastructure, referred to as the volume expansion of frozen soils, which are susceptible to frost action with the presence of moisture. The aggregate layer, such as highway base course or railroad ballast, is believed not to be prone to the frost heave due to its large void ratio and low capability to hold moisture content. However, recent reports around the world, such as Norway, USA, China, and Japan, etc., indicate the frost heave does happen in the ballast layer even when the moisture content is low. Existing literatures, which often believe track upheaval should not happen on aggregate like ballast, cannot well explain the recently observed phenomenon. In this study, the researchers conduct a series of laboratory experiments aiming to identify the possible reason that cause ballast frost heave in a well-controlled environment. Clean ballast is prepared with different moisture conditions, including half submerged condition and fully submerged condition. The growth of ice and movement of particles are tracked and qualified through image analysis. The findings from this study provide evidence to prove the effect of ice formation on ballast and would help to explain the root cause of ballast frost heave.

Fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites are a recent addition to the family of fiber-reinforced composites employed as externally-bonded reinforcement to strengthen reinforced concrete members. FRCM composites use a cementitious matrix rather than epoxy, which is typically used for the well-known fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. For both FRCM and FRP, the weakness of the technology is the premature debonding of the composites, which in most cases is a brittle phenomenon. The study of the debonding is often carried out at the small-scale level by employing small blocks of concrete with a strip of composite applied to one face. Different set-ups exist to study the phenomenon at the small scale. The most common set-up is the pull-push single-lap direct-shear test, in which the composite strip is pulled while the concrete block is restrained in such a way that the interfaces between the composite and the block is subjected mainly to shear stresses. The set-up is designed to represent the shear stress-transfer that occurs at the composite-concrete interface in full-scale strengthened beams. Single-lap direct-shear tests are commonly used to study the debonding phenomenon because the specimens are easy to construct and handle, especially compared to full-scale beams. Nevertheless, the open question in the scientific community is whether the results of single-lap direct-shear tests can provide useful information on the debonding phenomenon in strengthened beams. This paper aims at providing an insight into this open question. The paper focuses on single-lap shear tests and full scale beam tests that employ a polyparaphenylene benzo-bisoxazole (PBO) FRCM composite.

As the wind market grows rapidly and wind power plants are installed in high seismicity areas, there is the increased need for researchers and practitioners to assess the dynamic performance of Wind Turbine (WT) structures under extreme events. The present work is a preliminary attempt to quantify the performance of conventional steel WT towers under repeated earthquakes and enhance the understanding of their dynamic response. The case study is a 22 m high, 65 kW WT tower, assembled from cylindrical and conical steel sections of varying diameter and thickness. A simplified numerical model of the WT is developed in RUAUMOKO software program and subjected to five sequences of seismic events, available in the PEER strong motion database. The paper focuses on the effect of the multiplicity of earthquakes on critical response parameters, such as interstorey drift ratios and residual displacements. Incremental dynamic analyses provide estimates of the structural demand and capacity under single and multiple earthquakes of recurring periods. The findings show that repeated earthquakes significantly influence the seismic response of WT towers. Therefore, the consideration of sequences of main events and aftershocks is essential for the enhancement of the seismic resilience of WT towers.

Asphalt concrete (AC) is a commonly used material in road construction;however, its quality is highly dependent on atmosphere temperature. Temperatures can adversely affect AC performance and its service life. This paper presents an empirical model to predict the heat distribution in AC in Danang. A temperature monitoring station has been set up at the University of Danang-University of Science and Technology to monitor heat distribution in the pavement. The monitored AC layer with a thickness of 13 cm was constructed on a 15 cm cement-treated base. Thermocouple sensors were then installed in AC at different depths of 2, 5, 7, 10, and 12 cm from the pavement surface. The temperature was monitored continuously for five days in September, 2020. Climate data, including air temperature and solar radiation intensity, was collected from the Vietnamese National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting. Statistical models delivered from the collected data to predict the temperature distribution in AC were developed. They were finally compared with previous studies and suited to predict the temperature distribution in AC in Danang city.

Steel is a superior structural material due to its strength and ductility. These properties are advantageous especially for seismic resistant buildings. Masonry wall structures are vulnerable to earthquakes with their heavy weight and brittleness. Having a lower fire resistant nature is critical for wooden structures. For reinforced concrete (RC) structures, it is difficult to equip seismic energy dissipating systems. The RC structures can absorb the seismic energy with their plastic deformation with cracks;however, residents do not feel at ease with cracked RC buildings by large earthquakes and do not wish for such cracks to remain inside. In spite of the superior material properties of steel, extensive damage has been observed after large earthquakes over the past 50 years. Damage tolerant structures were proposed with the development of eccentric brace frames and buckling restrained braces (BRBs) in 1970 and 1987, respectively. Nowadays, many passively controlled steel buildings using BRBs or other damping devices have been constructed. A brief history about the innovation of damage tolerant structures and recent applications in Japan are introduced.

Nowadays, most researches focus on using alternative materials with growing demand for natural resources and especially in the civil engineering area. One of the alternative materials we can cite the dredged sediments, which are considered as waste according to the European wastes classification directive. In France, the dredging industry generates around 50 million m(3) of marine sediments each year. Thus, it becomes an attractive topic to assess its relevance as an alternative material in the civil engineering field. The question, which could be raised is what advantages it can provide as a practical solution in reducing environmental impacts on humans and the environment. So the aim of this study is to assess the valorization life cycle system in order to quantify the environmental impacts, energy usage, and natural resource consumption, and to indicate which material or process contributes to high impacts in order to reduce the valorization system damages improving its efficiency. This paper will summarize the valorization life cycle stages, which will provide an overview for future work and assessment.

India's construction industry grew by 5.6% in 2016-20, compared to 2.9% in 2011-2015. In the year 2017, of the 762 construction projects in India tracked by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, Government of India, a total of 215 projects have been delayed over a period of 1 to 261 months that surge estimated project cost. The various reasons for delay include practicing conventional planning strategies and execution. Indian construction industries, therefore, need smart tools to overcome any such challenges in the future. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a smart 3D model-based process that provides insight and tools to architecture, engineering, and construction experts to design and build infrastructure more effectively. A case study on BIM vs manual cost estimation showed that quantities calculated by BIM/Revit Software are more accurate than manual. The earlier studies estimated that implementation of BIM reduces project costs by 20%. It will help improve the quality of work with proper planning and adhering to the project cost and duration. The study recommends that construction industry in India should adopt BIM/Revit tools to minimize delay in the projects to become cost-efficient in project completion.

Textile reinforced mortars (TRM) have been proven to be an excellent technique for the strengthening of unreinforced masonry walls providing increased flexural and shear resistance. TRM - also termed Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrices (FRCM) - involve high strength fibre textile materials impregnated in inorganic cement or lime based mortars. As in every externally bonded strengthening technique/material, one of the key parameters controlling the effectiveness of the TRM is the bond strength of the TRM to the masonry interface. Over the past fifteen years or so, the mechanics of TRM to masonry bond have been investigated experimentally, analytically, and numerically for the case of quasi-static loading. Conversely, the case of fatigue loading has not garnered much attention. Experiments conducted on FRP strengthened concrete specimens have however demonstrated the detrimental effect of fatigue to the corresponding interfacial properties. In this work, we present the preliminary results from an experimental investigation on the TRM to masonry bond strength under one sided cyclic loading conditions. In this experimental campaign, a series of single lap shear tests have been conducted on basalt textile fibre TRM bonded to masonry, considering various bond lengths.

The most important and most frequently encountered combination of construction materials is that of steel and concrete, with applications in multi-story buildings and constructions. The combination of concrete and steel utilizes the compressive strength of concrete and tensile capacity of steel and the resulting composite members offer many structural as well as economic benefits. The recent development of concrete technology resulting in a new type of concrete with many advanced properties, it is called in common name Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC). By substituting UHPC to Normal Concrete, the resistance of concrete materials could be reached the resistance capacity of steel and consequently, obtaining optimal load caring of each contribution material. The replacement does not only increase the stiffness and overall ultimate strength but also reduces the cross-section of the composite beams. Furthermore, the need for economical alternatives for steel normal concrete composite structure and faster construction processes during the erection of structures, boost the investigation in the domain of steel-UHPC composite construction. This study presents a numerical simulation to investigate the structural performance of steel-UHPC Composite Column under axial and flexural loading. Non-linear finite element analysis was conducted, which uses the Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) model. The numerical results of the proposed model showed a good agreement with the experimental result to capture the behavior of steel-UHPC composite column under axial force and bending moment.

In the contemporary life, the exploration of sand mines on the sea has been very interested by investors. In recent years, the demand for backfilling materials by sand in Haiphong estimated to be over 150,000,000 m(3) per year (Phu et al. in Bao cao tham do khoang san cat lam vat lieu san lap tai Khu vuc Con Muc, Cua song Van Uc, huyen Kien Thuy, Hai Phong, 10/2016 [1]). It is projected that from 2020 to 2025, the increase in demand for these products will reach over 20%. This research will introduce the sand mine exploration method by the application of sub-bottom seismic equipment in Haiphong City waters and evaluates the effectiveness of the combination of both sand mine drilling methods using a drill boat and Sub bottom seismic device. Indeed, to construct this research, methods of data collection, experimental methods, expert methods, data analysis and evaluation methods have been used to take advantages of applying geophysical techniques in evaluating the current sand mine reserves. After conducting the exploration of sand mines in Haiphong, the results of the sub bottom seismometer device were checked together with the traditional geological drilling results, It was found that the time of using the seismometer was much shorter than the traditional drilling method by many times, it only took about 2 days for 100 ha to be explored in the field, when the geological drilling method was applied, it could take 15-30 days to complete 100 ha in the field, with the analytical results obtained, seismic measurement methods not only save time but also protects the surrounding ecological environment, and it is essential for assessing the project of sand mines reserves.
