Cutting-edge technologies and optimization frameworks for energy efficiency enhancement of the entire domestic hot water (DHW) chain are crucial to fulfill the ambitious goals of the future building regulations. In this context, the present study establishes a multi-objective optimization framework for the DHW network in a typical residential building, in which the hot water is supplied by a PV-BESS driven air source heat pump system relying on the thermal energy storage (TES) to decouple energy production and demand. Emphasizing on the role of in-building control strategies and user behavior, the optimization algorithm employs the response surface methodology (RSM) with central composite design (CCD). It seeks to simultaneously minimize the total energy use for DHW production and total heat loss from theDHWnetwork, while maximizing the temperature of delivered hot water to users as well as the TES mean temperature. To examine interactions in components of the DHW network, dynamic simulations are carried out by developing a TRNSYS model coupled to a MATLAB code. The latter generates the hourly DHW consumption profiles using Gaussian distribution. It is shown that the developed optimization framework strikes a balance between conflictive design factors to meet the targets of multi-criteria optimization. The variable TES set-point is found to be the most influential factor in terms of providing hot water at a higher temperature to users. Furthermore, adjusting the activation time (and flow rate) of recirculating loop and the TES charging time slots in accordance with the user behavior (draw-off) and peak consumption timespans demonstrate a significant impact on minimizing either the total energy use or thermal loss.

Slow-onset disasters (SLODs), such as increasing temperatures and air pollution, impact the microclimate, health and habits of users in the built environment (BE), especially in outdoor spaces such as squares. While numerous risk assessment methodologies are available for the BE at a macroscopic level, methodologies focused on local analysis of mesoscale elements, are still limited. These spaces play a crucial role in the public life of cities, influencing the activities and behaviours of inhabitants. The SLODs risk in the squares depends primarily on the interaction of various factors, including specific hazards, square characteristics (e.g., morphology, activities, and type of activities and services available), exposure and user characteristics (e.g., health, age, mobility). There is a requirement for methodologies to effectively incorporate all these factors, specifically to enhance the implementation of risk reduction strategies. This work introduces an innovative approach to formulate a user-oriented risk index using a Risk Matrix (RMA), which combines the different factors involved. The proposed method ensures rapid applicability while integrating quantitative analyses (from large datasets, accessible online) and qualitative assessments (from experience and knowledge). It allows for the representation of assessed risk levels through mesoscale maps that show the risk variation as specific local conditions change. The simplicity and versatility of the method facilitate its use by non-experts and local authorities to obtain a quick risk assessment and support the definition of targeted mitigation strategies. The study assessed and mapped local risks in both a real scenario and a project scenario where green areas are implemented, and traffic is reduced. Results highlight the influence of localized features, such as greenery and specific attractions on risk levels (e.g., shops, universities, railway stations).

Retrofitting existing buildings to meet and even exceed current high efficiency building standards is a critical approach to reducing the overall existing building energy consumption and associated carbon emissions. Considering the significant role of the envelope in retrofit design, it is important to quantify its insulation performance for assessing the pre-retrofit condition and to verify its post-retrofit performance. However, the envelope monitoring challenges include wiring requirements and power supply, data communication, sensor localization, monitoring discontinuity, and high costs. To overcome these challenges, our study developed sensor packages equipped with a communication network and Power over Ethernet technology to monitor the envelope's pre-retrofit conditions. This innovative approach not only ensures effective sensor localization but also addresses power supply and data communication issues. The sensor packages were deployed in an occupied demonstration building on Syracuse University's campus, focusing on different wall assemblies including a pre-cast concrete wall and a wood-framed wall. The sensor packages measured heat flux, surface temperature, relative humidity, and air temperature on both the interior and exterior of the existing wall assemblies. This study collected and analyzed hygrothermal data from August to November 2023. The analysis revealed a higher thermal mass effect for the concrete assembly. Furthermore, the study interpreted moisture transfer through the walls using the daily relative humidity fluctuations percentage to evaluate the buffering capacity of the walls. The application of networked sensors in this study demonstrates their effectiveness in overcoming monitoring challenges and for evaluating exterior energy retrofitting approaches.

Alternative types of deep foundations have been designed and are under construction at Denali and Yellowstone National Parks (NPs) in the United States. At Yellowstone NP, the design mitigates hot temperatures, gases, and caustic ground-water across the Yellowstone River in a valley bottom. At Denali NP, the design mitigates degrading permafrost and an advancing rock glacier on a steep mountain slope. The designs are different in almost every way except that they show the versatility and value of drilled foundation elements. The different foundation conditions that must be dealt with are the result of past decisions and they exemplify the sentiment that the good sites are already taken. Each of these is a major bridge project where the alternatives to building at these locations had severe consequences, and the avoidance of these consequences is what drove the innovation. At Yellowstone NP, large diameter drilled shafts, with innovative casings, were used to reduce the number and depth of penetrations above a hydrothermal resource and to minimize the surface area exposed to the environment. At Denali NP, micropiles and tiedown anchors were used in surprising ways to provide a reinforced rock foundation capable of supporting construction and long-term loads, including the continued evacuation by the rock glacier. Thermosiphons were added alongside these elements to keep ice in an abutment frozen for the bridge service life and to mitigate the effects of changing climate.

Digital Twin (DT), a concept developed by the aerospace industry in the 1970s, was employed to enhance success rates, lower productional and operational expenses, and prolong the lifespan of their products. It has recently gained much popularity in the manufacturing and construction industries. However, the end products in these two industries vary in scale and complexity. The systems and performances of end products (e.g., buildings, campuses, cities) in the construction industry are of a greater variety. Therefore, it is more challenging to construct DTs for the built environment. In computer science, a DT encompasses tangible entities, virtual objects, and their interconnections. Building Information Modeling (BIM) emerges as a powerful technology to enhance the efficiency of constructing Digital Twins (DTs) for buildings. This study aims to utilize BIM to build DTs of university buildings for better operation and management of university campuses, targeting better energy and indoor environment performance and material circularity. The civil engineering Research Building (CERB) of the National Taiwan University (NTU) is used as a study case. Autodesk Platform Service (APS) is used to view the BIM model of CERB, link smart sensor data with its model, and create a dynamic dashboard of linked data in a cloud environment.

The Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) strategy subsidises the financial, deadline and quality performance expected from the project. Its managerial processes and contractual requirements directly influence the productivity obtained in the project because the lack of understanding of these factors is interpreted as one of the main cause-effect factors associated with the low success of IPD implementation, resulting in stakeholders' non-adherence to the final product's objectives. Building Information Modeling (BIM) in construction has been proposed as a technological solution to enhance information integration and collaboration throughout the processes in the IPD strategy. Thus, this article seeks to clarify how to develop the IPD strategy for the integrated management of construction projects and what challenges are arising. The question was addressed through a Systematic Literature Review. The sequencing of activities for the development of IPD was identified. The main challenges encountered were associated with the implementation process, the laborious and intense process of the integrated management required, and the disciplined integration with the cost of the work. However, the IPD for project management proves to be viable, pointing out benefits in the provision of guidelines for optimising the traditional process of project delivery, bringing solutions to most of the problems inherent in the conventional method, besides contributing to the reduction of rework through interoperability, integration of communication systems and anticipation of constructive decisions, promoting a favourable scenario for improving BIM technology uses.

This paper establishes a numerical model of one-dimensional beach profile evolution at a laboratory scale with XBeach, whose ultimate objective is to study the beach profile changes after applying beach nourishment. The prediction data of the model and related physical models are compared and calibrated. The schemes under different wave conditions, sediment volumes, grain sizes, and replenishment methods are numerically simulated on this basis. Some interesting conclusions can be drawn from the schemes. The beach profile does not change regularly with the linear variation of the sediment volume. So, the larger nourished sediment volume of the beach is not the better. Moreover, the results show that the sediment grain size is inversely proportional to the erosion intensity. These provide essential support for beach restoration design, rationality, and stability, as well as for judging the feasibility of beach restoration projects.

Infrastructures in many countries experience accumulations of snow. On pavements, this causes unsafe conditions for road users. An alternative technology to snow plowing and de-icing consists of embedding near the ride surface ribbon-like elements that melt snow and ice due to the Joule effect as an electrical current is passed through the ribbons. This study dealt with the optimization of electrically heated pavements utilizing such ribbons. For this, a thermal model was mathematically outlined;it considered the 2D heat equation applied to a three-layered domain representing such pavement. The top boundary (i.e., pavement surface) was subjected to a heat flux representing weather effects, which were quantified with measured data obtained in the UK. A large number of cases were considered for the optimization: ribbon spacing and embedment depth, thermal conductivity of the top layer representing AC, and energy consumption of the ribbons. Amongst all cases, for the considered weather data, it was found that the optimal heated pavement consists of a ribbon spacing of 0.2 m, an embedment depth of 0.07 m with a thermal conductivity of 2.5 W . m(-1) . K-1 for the asphalt concrete. The developed thermal model is seen as a tool that engineers can utilize for the thermal design of heated pavements.

During the Twentieth Century, the industrial buildings represented an "ideal laboratory" for the development of architectural techniques and languages of Modernity. For the study, conservation, and valorization of the industrial building heritage, advanced digital tools and processes can play a crucial role. This paper presents a workflow based on data acquisition - documental analysis - parametric and informative modeling, and interactive visualization of the building details and the related documental sources. The workflow is conceived to support the study of buildings featuring non-standard structures and construction solutions, based on complex geometries. Specifically, an Application Programming Interface (API) has been defined combining the use of the parametric modeling platform Grasshopper (c), enriched by the Geometry Gym (c) tool kit, the structural analysis software FEM Sap 2000 (c), the open standard IFC 4, and the cloud-based Shape Diver (c) platform for AR. The workflow is presented via the case study of the so-called "Silberkuhl system" - consisting of hyperbolic paraboloid (HP) thin shell elements - which was worldwide applied for industrial building roofing between the 1960s and 1970s.

More than a simple 3D modelling tool, BIM is a set of interacting policies, processes and technologies generating a methodology to manage the essential building design and project data in digital format throughout the building's life cycle. This new way of working also includes a new paradigm in construction projects, breaking down traditional project silos, encouraging a more collaborative project approach. Thus, the training of future construction professionals needs to be adapted ensuring the latter to be prepared to this new reality. The objective of the paper is to propose recommendations for an active PBL strategy, including horizontal and vertical integration. The study use the experience of a group of students in a postgraduate research group putting BIM concepts into practice in a renovation project aiming with the intent of improving their individual competencies. The students' motivation to implement the BIM Summer Project was to promote the integration of the research group members, as well as practising theoretical concepts. A renovation project was selected as a real-world case. The students were also challenged to apply openBIM principles throughout the project. In a context of project-based active learning objectives, the students organized themselves autonomously practising the following fields, in addition to OpenBIM: Common Data Environment (CDE), BIM Execution Plan (BEP), level of information need, BIM uses and modeling. Targeted competencies included model coordination, cost analysis, information management and project management. These were acquired throughout the experience with the application of Revit, Catenda, Solibri, Plannerly, Miro and Excel. This experimentation of active learning approach demonstrated many benefits for the training of students, who have given positive feedback about their learning, competencies, and self-confidence to move into the industry.
