A novel seismic dissipater for steel beam to column joints, termed the Friction Rotational Link (FRL), is described. It comprises two fixed plates welded to an end plate, which is bolted to the column flange, and two plates each with circular arch slotted holes, termed external slotted plates and bolted to the beam web. Thin disks are placed between the fixed and external slotted plates to provide stable energy dissipation. All these plates are clamped by high strength bolts. In FRLs energy is dissipated when the slotted plates rotate relatively to the fixed plates. Quasi-static testing of 8 FRLs was undertaken using A325 bolts and disks with Brinell hardness of 91 - 533BH, such as aluminium, brass, steel, and tempered steel. It is shown the FLR hysteresis loop is rectangular. The FRL strength reduced between runs, and it is dependent on the hardness ratio, which is the ratio between the disk hardness and the slotted plate hardness. For high hardness ratios of 2.9, such as for tempered steel disks, the FRL strength was low and almost constant. For hardness ratios of unity, such as for steel disks, the strength was high with an increasing trend. It is also shown the reduction in FRL strength between runs is due to bolt tension loss caused by the degradation of the disks and the slotted plates surfaces (rotational interfaces). Two types of degradation of rotational interfaces were observed: abrasive for steel disks, and adhesive for aluminium, copper, and tempered steel disks. While in the abrasive degradation, the rotational interfaces are abraded producing high bolt tension loss, in the adhesive rotational mechanism, the rotational interfaces are only smoothly degraded producing low bolt tension loss.

This study aims at evaluating the capacity of steel moment frame (MRF) structures at collapse limit state designed according to the current version and next release of Eurocode 8. To this purpose, the framework of performance-based earthquake engineering according to PEER is adopted. The collapse intensity and subsequently the mean annual rate of collapse are computed as an index of comparison. The structural assessment is carried out by means of nonlinear static and dynamic analyses on 2D models developed using "OpenSees". The results show that the incoming version of the EC8 allows exploiting the inherent ductility of the structure, while having the same collapse risk as the frame designed in accordance with the current version of EC8.

In Japan, steel structure buildings, such as plants and warehouses, are demolished within approximately 30 years owing to physical, architectural, economic, or social reasons. Damages of structural steels such as plastic deformation are often caused by demolition of the building steel structures. If their performance of structural steels affected by the plastic deformation such as bending, twisting, warping are evaluated, it makes contribution to use structural steels for reuse. In this study, we focus on damages such as bending history and experimentally investigate the mechanical properties of structural steels that have been subjected to a bending and unbending process using parameters such as bending radius, bending count, thickness of structural steels. These mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation of the structural steels affected by bending history are evaluated by conducting a tensile test.

Steel corrosion is a major problem in the civil engineering industry, thus finding an effective alternative has been of main interest. One of these alternatives is glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar, as it has multiple advantages including: corrosion-free, nonconductive, and high strength-to-weight ratio. On the other hand, conventional concrete (CC) is not environment-friendly concrete due to its high CO2 emission. Therefore, other replacements of Portland cement have been on the lookout. Some of the alternatives include fly ash and silica fume that can be added either partially or fully to make the concrete. In addition, adding fibers to the concrete has been of main interest, as it offers several advantages including crack control, and tensile capacity increase. In this study, a bond investigation was carried out using a pullout experiment to assess the bond-slip behavior between GFRP bars and fiber-reinforced eco-concrete (High-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete) following the RILEM recommendations. The bond test was used owing to its structural significance and the lack of bond studies between such two sustainable materials (GFRP bar and HVFA concrete). The parameters of the study involved: concrete type (CC and HVFA), fiber type (steel and synthetic), bar type (GFRP and steel), bar size (13 and 19 mm), and embedment length (6.4 mm, and 12.7 mm). To make the assessment, the bond results of the GFRP-reinforced specimens were compared to those resulted from steel-reinforced specimens. The test results showed that the bond strength of GFRP bar was less than that of steel bar. Also, the addition of fibers to the concrete decreased the bond strength.

In the last decades, inorganic-matrix composites have been increasingly employed as externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) for masonry and reinforced concrete (RC) members. Among them, fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites, which are comprised of high-strength open mesh textiles embedded within inorganic matrices, showed promising results for both masonry and RC strengthening. FRCMs may include different types of fiber, such as glass, carbon, basalt, polyparaphenylene benzobisoxazole (PBO), and steel, and various matrices, such as cement-based, lime-based, and geopolymers. Acceptance criteria for material qualification and design guidelines have been recently published in Europe and US. FRCMs can still be considered as relatively-new materials and the current guidelines are just a starting point. More research is needed to fully understand the behavior of structural elements strengthened with FRCM. When a single layer of fiber textile is employed, failure of FRCM-strengthened elements occurs due to debonding at the matrix-fiber interface, although different failure modes can be observed when a different number of textile layers is used. Depending on the type of application and strengthening configuration, the composite can be subjected to a multi-axial state of stress that affects the response of the strengthened member. In this paper, a three-dimensional cohesive contact algorithm is developed to accurately describe the bond behavior of FRCM composites subjected to a multi-axial state of stress. The algorithm accounts for the interaction (coupling) between the shear and axial stresses at the interface where debonding occurs. The cohesive contact algorithm is implemented in a finite element code that is employed to calibrate and model the matrix-fiber interface cohesive laws of a PBO FRCM composite.

In North America, structures in aggressive environments such as bridges and parking structures are prime examples for the use of fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) due to their capability to control shrinkage cracking and improve impact resistance. Also, after cracking, more advantages of FRCs were reported such as increased energy-absorbing capacity and deformation capability, and improved load-bearing capacity. Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams are one of the common components in such structures. Deep beams have higher load capacity compared to slender beams. They are characterized by their small span-to-depth ratio and they are usually designed using the Strut-and-Tie Model (STM). Recently, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars have been used as an alternative to steel bars to overcome the corrosion problems. However, due to its linear-elastic behavior and relatively low modulus of elasticity compared to steel, glass FRP (GFRP)-RC deep beams would be susceptible to deeper and wider cracks as well as lack of ability to redistribute stresses, which will adversely affect the capacity of such beams. On the other hand, contribution of the arch action mechanism to the shear strength in FRP-RC deep beams can be improved because of the relatively higher tensile strength of FRP bars in the tie. In this study, a layer of basalt fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (BFRCC) was incorporated in the tie zone to examine its ability to enhance the overall behavior of GFRP-RC deep beams. Two large-scale RC deep beams reinforced with GFRP headed-end bars were constructed and tested up to failure. The specimens had a rectangular section of 250 x 590 mm and a length of 2,100 mm. The main variable was the incorporation of the BFRCC layer in the tie zone. The specimens were tested in a three-point bending setup over a clear span of 1.24 m with a shear span-to-depth ratio of 1.0. In current practice for concentrically braced frames (CBFs), a gusset plate is typically used to join the brace to the frame elements. Using a linear clearance to accommodate the out-of-plane deformation of the buckling brace can have negative implications for both construction and seismic performance. An alternative connection approach, intended to be more seismically resilient, has recently been developed based on a replaceable brace module (RBM). This connection uses shop welded/field bolted connections to facilitate erection and make the brace replaceable by confining all damage to the RBM. This paper presents results from 70%-scale testing of a concentrically braced frame with RBMs and moment-resisting beam-column connections. The experimental program consisted of two phases. In Phase I, the frame was subjected to quasi-static cyclic loading up to brace fracture. In Phase II, the damaged RBMs were replaced with new RBMs, and the behaviour of the frame was investigated under the same loading protocol. The tests demonstrate that the frame performance was at least equivalent to what would be expected with more traditional connections, while also allowing site welding to be avoided, brace buckling to be limited to the in-plane direction, and the brace modules to be easily replaced. The moment-resisting beam-column connections functioned as intended, with minimal damage up to brace fracture during the first tests, and similar behaviour during the Phase II tests with replaced RBMs. In this way, the testing demonstrated the viability of the proposed new approach to detailing concentrically braced frames to facilitate more rapid repair.

A city's hazard mitigation plan requires an assessment of building susceptibility and a thorough seismic analysis. To contribute to the seismic analysis of the Chennai city, this study is done as an attempt to evaluate the vulnerability of every building prone to earthquakes. The design base shear was compared with the base shear calculated from peak ground acceleration to understand the effectiveness of the design base shear. The base shear for the buildings was predicted with the help of support vector regression, accuracy of the predictions with respect to the design base shear is found which was further used in the evaluation of modelled buildings' base shears. Support Vector Regression was primarily used as it considers all data for fitting, giving an apt relationship between the variables considered, whereas interpolation will consider only the nearest two values. The structures closer to the ocean are safer than those further inland in Chennai. The approach of prediction was shown to be more effective for structures with less storeys, and it may be applied to future buildings in Chennai as well as other cities with comparable soil characteristics, allowing the city to adjust to future changes.

In the past two decades, the use of Near-Surface Mounted (NSM) Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strengthening technique has increased in the retrofitting of damaged structures such as buildings, bridges, storages, etc. In the NSM technique, epoxy resins are usually used as a bonding material and have an important effect on the bond performance between the FRP and concrete. Exposure of these resins to increment of temperatures (i.e. around or beyond the glass transition temperature, T-g) may lead to changes in their mechanical properties, so that the performance and effectiveness of the strengthening system can be affected. In the present work, an experimental programme is performed to study the effect of temperature on the behaviour of NSM FRP strengthened RC beams. Unlike to most of the existing literature, where performance of the strengthening system under fire temperature was studied, the aim of this study is to consider a high ambient temperature (i.e. similar to temperature during the summer days). Six specimens have been tested up to failure in two different series. Each series includes a control beam and two NSM CFRP strengthened beams with two different areas of CFRP. In the first series, the specimens have been tested at room temperature, whilst those of second series have been tested at 40 degrees C. Results of the effect of temperature on the flexural response of strengthened RC beams with different NSM CFRP ratio are evaluated in terms of flexural performance, failure mode and bond performance along the FRP laminate. According to experimental results, the stiffness of specimens was not significantly affected by temperature. Besides, large laminate length avoided FRP debonding in strengthened specimens and CFRP rupture was the observed failure mode, irrespective of the testing temperature. In later days, civil Engineers frequently confront issues for developing structures on or with soils, which own inadequate strength to sustain the loads thrusted on them amid development or the benefit life of the structure. Soil engineers have been forced to develop cost-effective and environmentally sustainable methods for soil stabilization due to the poor engineering performance of the soil. Bio-enzyme is a, non harmful, non combustible, non-corrosive liquid enzyme composition fermented from vegetable extracts that enhances soil qualities, is eco friendly, and is cost effective. It decreases water assimilation inside the soil and lowers gaps between the soil particles, allowing for the most extreme compaction possible. Protein is a natural biodegradable fluid, which does not have any harmful impact on environment. The bio protein which we utilized is known as TerraZyme. The Gurti soil sample from Southern Srinagar was treated with TerraZyme, and the treated soil was cured for 7 days. The effects of different protein blends (0.05 ml/kg, 0.1 ml/kg, and 0.15 ml/kg) used for soil stabilization on the geotechnical qualities of soils are investigated. Geotechnical features such as the California bearing proportion (CBR) and unconfined compression quality (UCS) are taken into account and discussed. These studies were carried out to determine the appropriate TerraZyme extent at various curing times.
