The Indian construction industry is characterized by major challenges such as low productivity and time and cost overruns. Poor work structuring is one of the major causes that leads to low productivity and time and cost overruns. Work Structuring is defined as a process that tries to align engineering design, supply chain, resource allocation and execution. The main objective of work structuring is to make the processes faster and more reliable while delivering the product to the client. This project mainly focuses on the construction supply chain-related issues to improve the construction process workflow. There are a lot of non-value-adding activities or wastes in construction practices and many among those were left unnoticed. Earlier studies have shown that there were significant amounts of values loss due to construction process flow wastes and tremendous productivity improvements can be achieved by simply targeting at reducing those waste and improve the process flow. Case studies have been carried out of different construction sites to find out the various wastes involved in the construction process. This project was conducted on the basis to study the waste concepts and the level of "leanness" in local construction practices based on philosophies and principles are drawn by Lean Construction.

The application of ring spring dampers in seismic design and strengthening/rehabilitation of civil structures is almost unknown and poorly investigated. Ring spring dampers are extremely robust, heat-resistant, durable, and have almost no maintenance requirements. Through an innovative design, they combine self-centering characteristics with a high seismic energy absorption capacity. Preloading gives them the typical flag-shaped force-deformation hysteresis curve, which can very efficiently absorb seismic energy in a structure, independently of the deformation velocity (non-viscous damping). Due to these properties, a structure with ring spring dampers can withstand seismic loads with little or no damage. The springs themselves also remain free of damage. The objective of this paper is to give an overview of the behavior of ring spring dampers, which are used as braces that will be activated in case of a seismic event. The resulting behavior of structures is discussed based on the analytical and numerical investigation of the equivalent stiffness and damping of the dampers. By the special combination of ring spring dampers with additional parts, the braces can be designed to resist seismic forces and absorb the resulting energy in both the tension and compression directions. Several structural and spring design parameters (structural and spring layout, spring type, spring composition, etc.) determine the overall seismic performance of the structure. The main influencing factors on the stiffness and damping of the ring springs were identified and investigated and their use for design purposes was elaborated. Generally, high initial stiffness and a high preload have a positive effect. By applying ring spring dampers, masses and cross-sections can be reduced. The dimensioning and practical applicability of ring spring dampers used as bracing units has been proven in several projects.

This paper is investigating the performance of Australian hemp in hempcrete including unretted and retted hurd and fines for wall and render applications, respectively. The mechanical, thermal and acoustic characteristics of hempcrete are assessed including the effect of retting process. Although the retting process caused about 12% decrease in shiv bulk density, which was attributed to the degradation of hemp and a lower solid volume fraction, hempcrete bulk density, mechanical characteristics, thermal conductivity and acoustic performance are not significantly influenced by the retting process. The thermal conductivity appears to be proportional to the bulk density which is proportional to the hemp content of hempcrete. Acoustic performance of wall mix specimens was outstanding with a maximum sound absorption coefficient around 0.90 for a frequency around 700 Hz. However, the acoustic performance of render mix specimens was extremely poor compared to that of wall mix specimens with a sound absorption coefficient less or equal to 0.13. The combined effects of fine particle size and high binder content is responsible for this drastic drop in sound absorption coefficient. Acoustic performance was much more impacted than thermal conductivity by the hemp fine particle size and high binder content of the render mix.

The EC8 design rules and requirements for steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs) mainly address far-field seismic scenarios. However, there are specific issues to account for Near Fault (NF) strong motions that may increase inelastic demand on structural steel members and joints. The latter are usually designed or qualified for far-field earthquakes. Also, the drift displacement is often characterized by severe unidirectional concentration. Another aspect influencing the design of MRFs is the limitation of interstorey drifts, which is often rather restrictive, thus penalizing the design of steel MRFs. The use of ductile energy-efficient claddings can be beneficial to relax the drift limitations, thus allowing to optimize the structural design, reducing the constructional costs, and encouraging the use of more sustainable solutions. To investigate these aspects, an experimental testing program has been planned within the FUTURE project, funded in the framework of the H2020-INFRAIA SERA program. In this project, comprehensive shake table tests were carried out on a two-storey one-bay mock-up equipped with different types of beam-to-column joints and extra ductile non-structural components. This paper illustrates the preliminary experimental results obtained on the bare steel frame equipped with two different types of detachable joints.

The underground spaces are more than more exploited for constructions, especially in the big cities. One of the problems to be treated for underground structures is the waterproofing. The current technique today for underground levels is using the peripheric reinforced concrete (RC) diaphragm walls and disposes a basement drainage system to evacuate thewater penetrating through the diaphragmwalls. The basement drainage system composes of drainage channel with pipes and at least two pumps to evacuate the water from the underground levels to the water evacuation systems. Then, a secondary wall is usually built to hide the drainage channel and the diaphragm wall. Therefore, this current technique is expensive for the maintenance and consumes the spaces of the underground levels. This paper presents a direct technique which directly appliques a waterproofing mortar on the negative-side of the diaphragm wall. The direct method has several advantages, not only because it is cheaper than the conventional method but also because it prevents the flux through the diaphragm concrete walls and so decreases the internal erosion of the concrete which can deteriorate the concrete quality. The robustness of the direct negative-side waterproofing method is discussed and assessed in the present study, from laboratory tests to in-situ tests. The technique works also for positive-side waterproofing and has shown the robustness after more than 20 years on in-situ structures.

The demand for a lightweight, reliable, and cost-effective construction material with free maintenance and great resistance to corrosion to replace steel communication towers has become more obvious in recent years. The paper explores the use of glass fibre-reinforced polymers (GFRP), as unconventional materials for the fabrication of lightweight communication guyed towers. The tower examined in this investigation had a uniform constant cross section of three identical cells bonded together to form an equilateral triangle with sides of 500 mm The communication tower was analyzed using the finite element program ANSYS and was designed to satisfy both the ultimate limit state and the serviceability limit state requirements of the structural standards for antenna towers and antenna supporting structures, EIA/TIA Standard. The experimental work involved the testing of 9 m tower segment under static and dynamic loads and an extensive material testing to define the tower's material properties. This paper presents results from this research project.

As a part of this study, 25 filament wound +55 degrees glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) tubes were tested in uniaxial compression and six in uniaxial tension. For the compression tests, tubes with two inner diameters (ID) were tested: 76.2 mm and 203.2 mm, as well as three nominal pressure ratings: 350 kPa, 700 kPa and 1050 kPa. Each compression specimen was cut such that the length was twice the outer diameter (OD). The compression test set-up is presented in Fig. 1 a. For each tube type, five identical specimens were tested in compression. Only two tube types were tested in tension: 76.2 mm diameter tubes with pressure ratings of 350 kPa and 1050 kPa. A novel test method presented in Fig. lb was used to test the tubes in tension. For each tube type, three identical specimens were tested in tension. The main test parameter was the effect of the D/t ratio on specimen stiffness and strength in both compression and tension. The tests showed that the tubes exhibit a nonlinear stress-strain response when loaded in both tension and compression and that, when loaded in tension, there is a significant post-peak behaviour. The tests also showed that the tubes were stronger in compression than in tension.

There is relatively little research on steel deck pavement of bascule bridge at home and abroad, which usually adopts the same paving materials and structures as ordinary steel deck, but it can't meet the normal application conditions. In order to improve the anti-sliding performance of steel deck pavement of bascule bridge, this paper provides a set of steel deck pavement technology of bascule bridge through theoretical analysis of mechanics of bascule bridge and research of pavement materials. The engineering application research shows that the anti-sliding performance of the pavement back layer is obviously improved. After 7 months of application, the pavement layer has a good overall structure, and the bonding strength is still stable at 3.57 MPa, with good durability and good social benefits.

This paper presents the testing results of four concrete-filled fiber-reinforced polymer tubes (CFFT) to evaluate their response under combined axial compression, flexural, and torsional loading. The first three samples evaluated each of the loading states individually, while the final sample tested a combination of all three loads. The presence of the axial compressive force was found to increase cracking strength by 178% in flexure and 105% in torsion while improving load retention after cracking. More importantly, combined loading was found to improve the flexural capacity by 34%, while reducing the torsional strength by 30%. This loading state had little effect on the flexural and torsional stiffnesses along with the maximum flexural deflection but reduced the twist capacity by 68%. Failure in the combined loading state was governed by the rupture of the tube resulting from high longitudinal tension on the bottom surface like in the case of pure flexure.

Heavy metals toxicity in tidal river has proven to be a major threat and there are several health risks associated with it. The purposes of this study are to determine the concentration of heavy metals from anthropogenic sources in Lower Klang River. Water surface samples and surface sediment samples were analysed for cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). The concentration of heavy metals in surface sediment samples were found in decreasing order Pb > Zn > Cd. While the concentration of heavy metals in water samples are much lower than the heavy metals in surface sediment samples with decreasing sequence of Zn > Pb > Cd. This research shows the presence of the heavy metals contamination in water surface samples and surface sediment samples of Lower Klang River. However, monitoring program and further investigation on heavy metals accumulation due to anthropogenic activities should be carried out to protect Lower Klang River during future growth. The results of this study provide useful knowledge and information for sustainable estuary management in Lower Klang River.
