Turkey is one of the earthquake-prone countries that experienced strong earthquakes in 1999. The last devastating earthquake hit Northwest part of the country, called as Marmara Earthquake, close to Istanbul. After these experienced earthquakes, various strengthening techniques have been applied to increase the seismic response of existing buildings against earthquake loads in seismically prone regions. These techniques aim to improve the lateral resistance of existing buildings by adding new elements such as steel bracing or shear walls. Braced members are one of the widely used approaches and practices for fast responses. They are used to increase the structural capacity under earthquake loads. The present study investigates a real, existing 7-story reinforced concrete (R/C) building located in Istanbul, Turkey as a case study. With seismic assessments, strengthening for existing buildings with steel bracings was evaluated. The selected building was designed according to the 1975 Turkish Seismic Code and strengthened according to the current 2007 Turkish Design Code. The construction of strengthening is currently completed, and the building is occupied in one of the high demanding regions in Istanbul, Turkey. Steel bracings were preferred to strengthen the project to gain the usage area. Strengthening with steel bracing also decreased disturbance faster than other supporting methods. The research determined the nonlinear structural behavior of a representative existing and strengthened reinforced concrete (R/C) building. Pushover curves were plotted for the existing and strengthened building models. Lateral displacements, story displacements, and plastic hinge rotations were calculated for the building. Then, probabilistic risk assessment was carried out by plotting the probability of exceedance curve for the building.

The main result of this work is the developed elements and prototypes of the information system of coastal risks associated with natural disasters. To do this, an analysis of past natural disasters was carried out, as well as possible events in the future were evaluated. Flood zones caused by these events and hydrodynamic impact on the shore were calculated. Risk maps, including escape routes, are based on these calculations. This research work was carried out for several coastal points of the Sakhalin region of Russia.

Lack of tack coat application will not ensure the bonding and continuity of the asphalt pavement layers. However, excess of its application can reduce the friction at the interlayer causing slipping. On the other hand, bituminous tack coat material is very sensitive to temperature changes. The fluctuations in temperature can change the interface adhesion ability. Therefore, it can be said that the interface shear resistance characteristics including interlayer cohesion and friction depended much on the temperature on the tack coat application rate. The paper presents the experimental results on the influence of temperature (25, 40, 60 degrees C) and rate of tack coat CRS-1 (0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 l/m(2)) on the interlayer cohesion and friction between asphalt layers. The results show that the maximum shear resistance is obtained at the rate of 0.2 (l/m(2)), and the lowest is for the case of 0.8 (l/m(2)). Besides, the temperature increases, the interlayer cohesion dramatically decreases while increasing the friction coefficient [except for the case of 0.8 (l/m(2))].

The presence of masonry infills may significantly affect the seismic behaviour of existing steel moment-resisting frames, characterised by low lateral force resistance and inadequate energy dissipation capacity due to the lack of seismic detailing. Masonry infills may cause variation of internal force distribution along beams and columns, resulting in large local seismic demands at beam-column joints and consequently leading to soft-storey mechanisms. Several numerical models have been developed to account for the effects of masonry infills, among which the equivalent strut models were most widely used. However, it has been argued that despite its ability to capture the global response of structures, the single-strut model may not be adequate to correctly simulate the internal forces distributions in steel members. To this end, the present study investigates modelling strategies of infilled steel frames using both single- and three-strut models. The results from different modelling approaches are compared among them and with experimental tests, providing insights on the influence of the modelling strategies both at global and local levels.

In the present study, a total of 12 experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the effect of prior in-plane damage on the out-of-plane response of structurally and thermally retrofitted masonry wallettes, simulating in a that way the behavior of upgraded masonry infills in reinforced concrete or steel frame structures under seismic loading. The specimens were retrofitted with textile-reinforced mortar (TRM), which in some cases was combined with expanded polystyrene as thermal insulation material. Testing comprised in-plane diagonal compression and out-of-plane bending on walls with or without prior in-plane damage. Numerical simulations were also performed using fiber modeling, and they were found in good agreement with test results. In-plane loaded walls with TRM only or TRM/insulation retrofitting outperformed significantly their non-retrofitted counterparts. Out-of-plane loaded walls with combined TRM/thermal insulation performed much better or at least as good as their TRM-only retrofitted counterparts, for the case with or without prior in-plane damage, respectively.

Green spaces located on buildings are an important part of urban environment, improving the quality of life through their aesthetic and functional advantages. However, they consume large amounts of resources from cities' water supply systems. Moreover, rapid urbanization and population growth amplifies the issue on clean water supply, increasing the necessity for efficient solutions enabling wastewater treatment and reuse. This paper focuses on demonstrating of an innovative wastewater treatment method, based on reusable catalyst materials on fixed supports, and their potential application to supply the irrigation scheme of the green spaces located on buildings. The investigations were conducted on a highly persistent organic compound, namely Clofibric Acid, frequently identified in urban wastewater in Europe. The obtained results confirmed that the 3D Hybrid Catalyst has a degradation efficiency of the compound up to 45% in visible light and up to 92% after 7 cycles of reuse, under UV irradiation.

The revision of Eurocode 8 is under way. The paper summarizes aspects of the revised rules common to all materials, like new format for the seismic action, enlarged sections on pushover analysis and the redefinition of the ductility classes with limits of applicability in terms of seismic action per structural systems and materials fitting better with the real seismic capacity of each structural type. The range of application of the former lower class DCL is increased for some systems while a class DC2 intermediate between the former DCL and DCM is introduced for more economical design. The revision improves the structural logic of requirements, taking for instance into consideration the force amplification in columns which exists after formation of a first plastic zone.

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of anchoring carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) U-Wrapped laminates by CFRP splay anchors to strengthen shear deficient reinforced concrete (RC) T-beams. Recent investigations in this field has proved that CFRP anchors could delay or prevent debonding of CFRP laminates. However, few tests were conducted to study the effect of the FRP anchors on the strength and ductility of RC beams externally strengthened in shear with CFRP sheets. In addition, there are no design guidelines for the anchors in the current strengthening design codes of practice. For the aforementioned reasons, one-point loading tests were conducted on six shear deficient RC T-beams. Five specimens were strengthened with U-Wrapped CFRP laminates, four of which were anchored with different configurations of CFRP splay anchor systems, and one T-beam was left unstrengthened to serve as a benchmark specimen. The parameter investigated in this study is the anchor inclination angle. The angles examined are 0 degrees, 25 degrees, 45 degrees, and 90 degrees, respectively. Test results showed that the anchors delayed CFRP debonding, improved the shear strength, and significantly enhanced the ductility of the unanchored RC beam specimen. In addition, small anchor inclination angles performed better in terms of enhancing the shear strength and ductility of RC T-beams than perpendicular anchors. This study will contribute in the development of design recommendations of FRP anchor splay systems.

Qatar is one of the most developed countries that became the ideal destination for residence, which led to an increase in the population and this resulted in an increase in the solid waste generation in the country. The paper proposes models and approaches for selecting the waste transfer station locations in Qatar. Optimization models were developed to describe four different configurations that attempt to optimize the current and future system. The four configurations are the result of several combinations of employing permanent or temporary waste transfer stations that accept single or multiple types of wastes. Among the considered configurations the results showed that the best one consists in selecting three out of five existing waste transfer stations, three permanent potential sites and, four temporary waste transfer stations which results in a minimum overall cost compared to the other models output.

This paper proposes a new seismic resilient steel beam-to-column joint using replaceable buckling-restrained energy dissipation fuse plates. Such a joint consists of a column tree where the beam stud is welded to the column in shop, and a midportion beam connected to the stud beam on site by using fuse plates, C-shaped shear tabs and high-strength bolts. The C-shaped shear tabs are used to connect beam webs and transfer the shear force while the fuse plates to connect beam flanges and transfer the bending moment. Specifically, the C-shaped shear tabs and beam flanges provide out-of-plane restraints for fuse plates to guarantee stable development of both moment strength and energy dissipation capacity, and the damaged fuse plates can be replaced after earthquakes. Three full-scale joint specimens were tested under cyclic loading to study their seismic behaviour and resilience. Test results showed that this kind of joint was able to shift the plastic damage from the beam-to-column welded connection to the replaceable fuse plates while the beam and column were basically elastic. Based on a comparative analysis, flat fuse plates (FP) and C-shaped shear tabs with the stiffener are recommended to ensure the easy repairability of the joint even after a large story drift. The repaired joint developed nearly identical seismic performance as the original one. This new joint provides an alternative solution, which is both economical and effective, for seismic resilient steel structures.
