Asphalt concrete (AC) has long been a popular material used as a pavement texture, however, there are still limitations in the exploitation process. Bitumen has an important role, it has a great influence on the properties of AC, improving bitumen quality is a trend in improving AC quality. Besides some currently used such as rubber additives, sulfur additives, polymer additives, finding new types of additives with easy, cost effective supply, taking advantage of recyclable material is always a matter of necessity. This paper presents some initial results of the research on using recycled polyethylene (RPE) to improve bitumen. This study introduces the mechanism of interaction between polyethylene (PE) and bitumen and conducts experimental studies to evaluate the influence of PE/RPE on the properties of bitumen. PE/RPE with different contents is added to 60/70 bitumen to analyze the parameters of bitumen such as penetration, softening point, ductility, elastic recovery, adhesion to stone, viscosity, storage stability. The results of the study to initially assess the influence of PE/RPE additives on the specifications of the bitumen, it is a premise for other studies in using PE/RPE to create PE improved bitumen (PEMB), RPE modified bitumen (RPEMB), creates new AC with better quality.

Steel-reinforced grout (SRG) is a type of composite used for structural strengthening applications. SRG is comprised of high-strength steel cords embedded in an inorganic matrix. In this paper, the results of an experimental study carried out to understand the compressive behavior of masonry columns confined by multi-layer SRG jackets are presented. Twenty-four confined and seven unconfined solid fired-clay brick masonry columns with a square cross-section were tested to failure under a concentric compressive load. Test parameters included the column corner condition, number of fiber sheet layers, and number of column faces the fiber sheets were overlapped (in the wrap direction), referred to herein as the number of fiber overlapping faces. SRG confinement was found to improve the compressive strength, ultimate axial strain, and energy absorption of the masonry columns. Results showed that the confined compressive strength, ultimate strain, and absorbed energy increased with the number of fiber sheet layers, however the increase in confined strength was not proportional to the number of fiber sheet layers. Rounding the column corners slightly increased the confined compressive strength. Increasing the number of fiber overlapping faces also increased the confined compressive strength, ultimate strain, and absorbed energy.

One of the main concerns about the use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in civil engineering structural applications is the potential reduction of their stiffness- and strength-related properties when exposed to elevated temperature. The first part of this paper presents an assessment of existing design guidelines for FRP structures, regarding the recommendations they provide about the reduction of FRP mechanical properties at elevated temperature. The second part of this paper presents a survey of test data available in the literature concerning mechanical tests at elevated temperature in FRP materials produced with different fibres, resins, shapes and manufacturing methods. The results of the survey show that the provisions available in existing design guidelines are not always accurate;moreover, in some cases, they are even non-conservative. Based on this assessment, the third part of the paper presents a method to define a temperature conversion factor for design purposes, consistent with the partial factor method of the Eurocodes, which was calibrated with the results included in the database. The method proposed takes into account not only the maximum service temperature experienced by the FRP material, but also its glass transition temperature;the method considers also the type of mechanical property, namely if it is either fibre- or matrix-dominated. The conversion factors obtained applying the method proposed presented a good agreement with the test data available in the literature.

To enhance the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs), the epoxy and vinyl ester resin modified by silica nanoparticles at 1, 2, 3, and 4 weight percent (wt%) were investigated. Tests of fracture toughness were conducted, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the fracture surface was proposed to identify the toughening mechanism. In addition, impregnated fiber roving made of modified resin was studied for improvements in tensile strength and stiffness. The addition of silica nanoparticles to epoxy and vinyl ester resin resulted in various promotions in their mechanical properties. The fracture toughness and impact strength of the epoxy resin in the presence of 3 wt% nanoparticles were increased by 12% and 49%, respectively, compared with the virgin epoxy resin. Furthermore, the corresponding of the vinyl resin with 3 wt% nanoparticles were 20% and 94%. SEM of the fracture surface displayed a relatively rough surface with tortuous cracks, thereby leading to higher fracture toughness of the modified resin system. The tensile strength of the impregnated basalt fiber roving made of the modified vinyl resin was obviously improved, and results showed that 18% promotion was obtained at a particle content of 3 wt%. In addition, the modified epoxy resin had less tensile strength enhancement to basalt fiber roving. Damage mechanisms of resin with nanoparticles were analyzed and differences due to the varying nanoparticle content identified.

A lateral force resisting system called CFS-SBMF is specified in AISI Standard (AISI S400). In this system, C-section beams are connected to square hollow section columns by high-strength bolts to assemble the moment resisting frames (MRFs). In the previous studies, a frame type that the built-up beam and column were connected through the connecting plate by high-strength bolts was proposed, which followed the AISI CFS-SBMF system concept. As a result of full-scale testing, local deformation occurred at an early stage, and the expected structural performance was not exhibited, showing 50% of the beam capacity. To maximize the performance, reinforcement at the bolted joint region may increase the resistance of the frame. In this study, parametric FEM simulation is conducted with two reinforcement methods. These reinforcements are attached to the web and flange of the beam. Based on the results, the bolted joint resistance could be increased up to 75% of the expected performance by the reinforcement. Moreover, the appropriate dimensions for the reinforcement are considered.

In the last decades, grid shell structures are widely spreading in many architectural works because they combine the beauty of their shape with the efficiency of the structural performance. They represent a fascinating example where the architectural design merges with the structural one since the "form" is itself the "structure". Thanks to this, grid shells are able to cover large spans with light solutions relying on the inherent rigidity provided by the double curvature shell. In many cases grid shells are also equipped with pretensioned members aimed at enhancing some structural properties such as stability, lateral stiffening, etc. The design of grid shells is often based on optimization strategies, which guarantee structurally efficient solutions by considering the role of each structural element composing the grid shell. In this context, the paper aims at investigating the influence of pretensioned members on the solution obtained from the structural optimization process. In particular, considering the case study of the Smithsonian Museum canopy in Washington equipped with pretensioned rods, the role of these elements is explored within the optimization design procedure.

As the unconscious of the efficiency on the construction sector in Malaysia, the financial performance of listed construction sector companies in Bursa Malaysia for year 2018 will be determined using DEA model to find out the efficiency each of the company. The results showed that MERGE is the most efficiency companies if compare to other 46 companies because it appeared 35 times as a reference set for inefficient companies. Also, the value of target improvement also had been figured so that the inefficient companies can be improved depending on the input or output.

The economy, environment, and society are heavily impacted by precipitation during floods, and droughts events. Recent technological advancements in satellite-retrieved, and radar precipitation products showed better resolution and coverage that resulted to sustainable data collection. Nevertheless, uncertainty and lack of consistency in information records can portrays a weakness while incorporation retrieved estimate and operational decision making. In this paper, the goal is to evaluate. Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) to simulate one flood event to investigate the effect of watershed subdivision. The Model utilized satellite products rainfall estimator (TRMM 3B42) and NEXRAD Stage HI in the Upper St. Johns River, located in the Mid-Eastern part of Florida. While taking into consideration extreme event in August 2008. The data were collected from 5 local precipitation gages in the St. Johns River District. Using validation metrics, this data was aggregated and differentiated between in-situ based rainfall, radar, and satellite derived rainfall. The detected rainfall amounts and volume of correctly identified precipitation, NEXRAD Stage provides a better possibility for accurate estimation and variability of precipitation at this high spatial resolution. In fact, the simulation results show less accuracy in predicting flow in the study area, but overestimation in the regions. Although comparable to radar-only simulations in terms of magnitude and time-to-peak, there is no discernible improvement in predicting these quantities.

Schematizing the most optimum level of details (LOD) in virtual environments (VEs) is a relevant endeavour as scale in virtual reality (VR) is not provisional but instead is locked at full scale. This paper compares recognizability and legibility of four 3D models of the same site in Melaka each with a different LOD. This informs whether different VEs' LOD can lead to different cognitive readings among respondents. Free-recall technique was used to evaluate cognitive knowledge of N = 96 respondents, with N = 24 respondents in each of the four VEs. Each respondent was asked to draw a map indicating visual cues from their minds. The cognitive maps in each treatment were then analysed using content analysis. The first coding scheme derived word frequencies to imply recognizability. The second scheme derived quality and relationships between elements to imply legibility. The contents were then compared among the different groups. We suggest that LOD may have some influence on cognitive understanding to varying degrees depending on the task and stage of navigation taken place.

The flexural strengthening techniques of reinforced concrete beams using Externally Bonded (EB) FRP sheets or Near Surface Mounted (NSM) FRP bars have been very well established. The technology transfer has taken place into engineering design practice for two decades now through the introduction of design guidelines. However, the lack of design software in the market as well as the limited academic education of present engineers has been an obstacle against the wide spread of this technology as a preferred alternative for repair and strengthening. Recently, a US-based group has responded to this need by developing professional interactive software to analyze and design structural elements strengthened with FRP. One of the very first products that came out of this effort was the development of a detailed analysis and design tool on strengthening of RC beams. This software complies with the provisions of ACI 440.2R-17 and is available interchangeably in SI and US customary unit systems. It is capable of analyzing rectangular, T and inverted L sections strengthened with externally bonded FRP or NSM bars. It allows for one compression layer and three tension layers of steel and provides strength and serviceability calculations. It has a graphics tool for to-scale drawing of sections, and it offers a detailed professional design report. The premium version is equipped with a graphics based optimized design feature that eliminates the need to perform design iterations. Its user-friendly interface is an asset to any design office.
