Carbon reinforced concrete (CRC) is an innovative building material where carbon-based meshes, partially in combination with solid carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars, are used as reinforcement in concrete members. In comparison to ordinary steel bar or steel mesh reinforced members there is no danger of corrosion of reinforcement. Therefore, concrete cover may essentially be decreased resulting in reduced dimensions of the member. However, CRC is not only characterized by application of carbon-based reinforcement, but it additionally allows the realization of new design principles like thin wall or free-form structures. By this, CRC contributes to the reduction of cement consumption and is helpful for improvement of sustainability issues in civil engineering. Application of carbonbased reinforcement requires new production technologies. The paper reports on the development of specialized concrete placement methods and reinforcing technologies and methods. Special consideration is needed to prevent the change of position of carbon reinforcement during placement and compacting fresh concrete. It is demonstrated that adequate production technologies are important precondition for application of CRC in construction practice.

Relying on the prefabricated construction project of a university in Guangxi, the standardization design of the building structure is proposed for the low standardization of prefabricated building design and serious conflicts in on-site construction, and the reinforced U-shaped ring is especially proposed for the problem of node collision in site construction. Advanced connection technologies such as buckle connection and steel slot connection and new components such as laminated truss floor slabs and corrugated pipe through-hole prefabricated columns. At the same time, BIM technology is used to verify the technical scheme. The result shows: the standardization degree of the integrated design of building structure proposed in the article High, can significantly improve the design and production efficiency, and the use of new connection technology and new components can effectively reduce the collision of steel bars and facilitate construction.

Experimental cyclic tests on full-scale, isolated vaults, carrying their self-weight and subjected to a uniformly distributed transversal load were performed so to investigate on the effectiveness of the Composite Reinforced Mortar strengthening technique. It is based on the application, at the vault extrados or intra-dos, of a 30 mm thick mortar coating with Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer meshes embedded. In the tests, the reinforced layer was connected to the masonry abutments through steel bars and GFRP elements. The actual performances of these connections in preventing slides and uplifts at the spring sections, which reduce the strengthening effectiveness, are analyzed in the paper. The comparisons of the results with previous experimental tests (without connection at the abutments) and numerical simulations, evidence a good effectiveness of the strengthening intervention, with significant benefits in both resistance and displacement capacities, and permit to assess the actual effectiveness of the tested connection strategy.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is technology moving in the world of engineering and architecture to the arena of construction companies in charge of construction operational that implement in the construction industry in Malaysia. However, most of the projects that implement BIM just focus on planning the building frame without considering safety planning. Hence, this paper is expected to fill the gap through the exploration of BIM-based on safety planning in Malaysia in previous literature. This paper presents a review of the barriers of BIM for safety planning in Malaysia's construction industry. All the barriers to adopting the BIM for construction safety has been found from previous research publications, such as lack of in-house expertise, lack of training/education on BIM, lack of awareness of BIM, lack of collaboration, client demand, and unsure of government commitment to BIM, high cost of software purchasing, lack of standardizing and resistance to change. All these barriers can be a guideline to the construction industry to solve this issue regarding BIM awareness in the construction industry. Proper safety planning in a project will surely benefit BIM in the construction industry. The research aim can be achieved and beneficial to all parties in the construction industry. This safety planning through BIM may minimize the accident at the project site, prevent hazard, and identify risk in the future.

This study investigates the effects of matrix strength on the pullout behavior of steel fibers by performing single pullout test. Two types of high strength steel fibers, smooth and twisted fiber, were embedded in three different concrete matrices with compressive strengths of 28 MPa (normal concrete), 84 MPa (highstrength concrete), and 180 MPa (ultra-high-strength concrete). The results showed that twisted fibers embedded in both normal concrete and high-strength concrete produced slip hardening behavior while smooth fiber in all concrete matrices generated slip softening behavior. As the matrix strength increased, the pullout resistance of fibers increased if they could maintain pullout mode. However, the pullout resistance of twisted fiber in ultra-high-strength concrete deteriorated immediately after the fiber was broken. Twisted fibers produced higher pullout resistance in normal and highstrength concrete but lower pullout resistance in ultra-high-strength concrete than smooth fibers. Twisted fiber showed the best performance in high-strength concrete whereas smooth fiber did in ultra-high-strength concrete.

This paper presents a new concept of modular houses which fulfils the actual requirements of modern construction as optimal insulation, acoustic performance, environmental aspects and modern architecture. A recent literature review (Ferdous et al. in Eng Struct 183:883-893, 2019), shows that modular buildings refer not to a single structure type, but a variety of structural systems or components (1D, 2D, and full volumetric or 3D) and materials (mainly, wood, steel and concrete). In our approach of modular constructions, Prefabricated Finished Volumetric Concrete Construction (PFVCC) was preferred. Then modular houses based on this concept were studied and recently prototypes built. This allows to characterize their mechanical efficiency, to monitor their energy saving, and to qualify all the construction process, including their future deconstruction and reconstruction.

North Sumatra is one of the areas where landslides often occur. The road along Medan-Berastagi is a landslide-prone area that has a rough topography with undulating hillside reliefs and slope angle between 60 degrees and 90 degrees. The literature on landslide susceptibility analysis in Sibolangit and Karo areas, where the two areas are located along Medan-Berastagi road, will be reviewed in this paper. This article presents summary review and classification of the main approaches that have been developed in Sibolangit and Karo as the parameters, methodologies, and tools used to obtain a landslide hazard map. The results of the review will be validated using landslide events that have occurred in 2020 by direct field observations.

This work presents the Monte Carlo simulation based on finite element analysis to investigate the natural frequencies of the beam on an elastic foundation with uncertain material. The elastic modulus is assumed as a homogeneous Gaussian random field. The random field is generated based on the spectral representation method. An iterative algorithm is employed using the finite element method to calculate natural frequencies with various the generated functions of elastic modulus. The effects of the random field on the response variability of natural frequencies and the effects of foundation coefficients are discussed in detail.

Steel beams with reduced beam section (RBS) are often used as part of prequalified connections in seismic regions. However, RBS connections are not as common in Europe. Reasons relate to easiness in fabrication, which requires on-site welding, and the seismic performance qualification. This paper presents preliminary experimental results from a recent testing program that was conducted at the Structures Laboratory at EPFL on full-scale steel beams with RBS. The steel beam featured a European IPE profile. The test specimen discussed herein was subjected to symmetric cyclic lateral loading up to 4% rad followed by asymmetric lateral loading, which is characteristic of dynamic response prior to structural collapse. The experimental results suggest that inelastic deformations concentrated within the RBS region, as expected. The beam flange-to-steel plate complete joint penetration welds behaved satisfactory throughout the imposed lateral loading history. The test specimen did not experience flexural strength deterioration prior to 4% rad. Comparisons of the cyclic response of the test specimen with available test data from prior testing programs are also discussed.
