This paper presents an experimental study on the performance of innovative Concrete-filled double steel tube (CFDST) columns with high-performance building materials under monotonic and cyclic loading. In total six stub CFDST-columns and two conventional stub concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST) were tested at Ruhr-Universitat Bochum under a constant axial load with either a monotonic or a cyclic increase of lateral displacement. Focus of the paper is the comparison of the characteristic behavior of the specimen like the hysteric behavior, ductility and energy dissipation. The experimental investigations have shown that the resistances, ductility and energy dissipation of innovative CFDST is increased compared to conventional CFST-columns. The use of a high-strength inner tube did show the most benefits in terms of the resistances, while at the same time a configuration with normal-strength core materials showed better results in terms of the energy dissipation and ductility.

The objective of the study is to investigate the size and shape effect on the efficiency of hybrid Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening of non-circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns under axial compression. FRP strengthening through external bonding (EB) is effective for the confinement of RC columns under axial compression. However, the EB technique is less effective for sections with an aspect ratio (breadth/depth) of more than two. Thus, ACI 440.2R does not consider the beneficial effect of FRP external confinement of columns with an aspect ratio greater than 2.0. Also, the effectiveness of the FRP confinement through EB reduces with the increase in the column size. Though near-surface mounting (NSM) of FRP laminates is less effective under pure axial compression, it can be helpful to meet the increase in strength demands of columns of large size and different shapes. Thus, the hybrid FRP strengthening technique used in this study combines the advantages of EB and NSM techniques. This study focuses on the numerical investigation using a nonlinear finite element analysis software, ABAQUS. Twenty RC non-circular column specimens of 150 mm depth and different size ratios (1.0, 1.5 & 2.0) and aspect ratios (b/d = 1.0, 2.0 & 3.0) are modelled using finite element technique. Different specimens such as (i) control RC with no strengthening, (ii) RC strengthened with EB, (iii) RC with NSM and (iv) RC with hybrid FRP strengthening technique are modelled and studied. The results of the FE analysis are validated using experimental results available in the literature. The validated FE models were used for a detailed parametric investigation to understand the effect of the hybrid combination of NSM ratio (0.4% to 1.6%) for a constant EB ratio. FE results show that hybrid FRP strengthening is effective in strength and ductility improvement of columns with larger size and aspect ratio than other techniques.

The demand for seismic resilient communities is the main driving force behind efforts of research engineers to develop novel reinforced concrete (RC) structures with superior seismic performance. Post-earthquake damage observations raise concerns about the behavior of conventional steel bars in seismic resisting structural systems which are susceptible to large residual deformations after surviving seismic events. Therefore, for the last two decades, considerable efforts have been made to find alternative reinforcement materials such as fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) and to develop various concepts for the adoption of these materials to enhance the seismic resiliency of RC structures. One of these concepts is the combination of both steel and FRP bars in seismic resisting structures. Herein, this paper discusses the seismic performance of steel-FRP reinforced concrete moment resisting frames (SFRC-MRFs) with the aim to determine the prospects and existing challenges of this new system. This paper starts with brief discussion about lateral performance of SFRC beam-column joints and then investigates the cyclic behavior of SFRC-MRFs. Afterward, the feasibility of using FRP bars with predefined surface texture details to avoid undesirable failure modes in SFRC-MRFs under severe earthquakes is discussed. Finally, existing research gaps and challenges are determined to facilitate the future adoption of the SFRC-MRFs.

In order to understand whether the alignment, internal force and cable force of the special-shaped cable-stayed bridge can still meet the design and code requirements due to the influence of the transverse displacement of the support during the construction process, the transverse displacement of the girder arch system is restricted before the removal of the support. The difference between the measured value and the designed value at each stage of the boom is within +/- 5%, which meets the design and specification requirements. In this paper, the pedestrian bridge in Anyi County, Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province is taken as an example. MADIS/civil software is used for finite element simulation analysis in the construction stage, and the linear shape, internal force and cable force of the superstructure are monitored. The results show that the measured deformation values of arch ribs and beams meet the design and specification requirements during the whole construction process. The difference between the measured value and the designed value at each stage of the boom is within +/- 5%, which meets the design and specification requirements.

The unique large-scale test facility for dam and levee models in the hydraulic engineering laboratory of theTUDresden has already proven itselfmethodically in several research projects and has been continuously developed and optimized. Complex issues of dam and levee protection combined with high-performance measuring and control systems for different flood scenarios were addressed in order to develop a profound understanding of the correlations between geohydraulics, geophysics and soil mechanics of such structures under in-situ-related conditions. Furthermore, new technologies (e.g. soil sensors for determining the water content, non-destructive methods for dike monitoring or image recognition) can be tested under laboratory conditions deducing recommendations for practical application. The hybrid approach supports the validation of mathematical-numerical models and keeps the focus on practical issues.

This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations on the behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) T-beams strengthened in shear with deep embedment (DE) fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. The tests were carried out on an unstrengthened beam as well as two beams strengthened in shear with embedded glass FRP (GFRP) or carbon FRP (CFRP) bars. The gain in shear strength increased by 28.1 kN (37.2%) with the increase in FRP elastic modulus from 46 to 130 GPa, demonstrating the important influence of DE FRP bar elastic modulus on the shear strength enhancement. The DE CFRP strengthened beam had higher post-cracking stiffness than both the unstrengthened control beam and the DE GFRP strengthened beam. A finite element (FE) model was developed and validated. A FE parametric study involving beams nominally identical to the tested beams revealed that an increase in steel-to-FRP shear reinforcement ratio instigates a decrease in shear strength enhancement.

In the modern life, marine structures such as projects for exploiting inland waterways, navigational channels, and different types of port facilities are developing more and more, the research of survey technology for these projects is not only fast but also requires high precision. With the urgent requirements in researching and applying the modern technology for the survey, the author has researched GSM [1] technology applied to automatic tidal data transmission combined with the bathymetric technical by Multi-beam Echo Sounder ES3PT-M [2, 3], Hypack software [4] in order to make depth maps for marine constructions. To do this research, the author installed the automatic tidal monitoring station, researched how to use automatic monitoring stations, how to transmit data by SMS waves via mobile phones, how to use multi-beam measuring equipment and conducted the experiment at EURO Jetty port project, Haiphong city. With the initial experimental studies, the combination between the two devices above assists survey engineers not to waste time in reading the water level manually as before, which easily leads to errors due to the reader's eyes. In addition, when measuring with the multi-beam instrument, it was found that the measurement spectrum was wide and covered the surface layer below the measuring area. This is a remarkable advantage of the multi-beam measuring device because it shows the entire bottom depth surface of the investigation area with a shorter measuring time compared to traditional measuring devices by about 1/10 times.

The definition of ductility classes DC of Eurocode 8 has been modified in the on-going revision process. DC1, without objective of plastic deformation capacity or energy dissipation capacity, is equivalent to the former DCL, on the contrary of DC3 which, like former DCM and DCH, requires those characteristics and imposes for moment resisting frames the "weak beams-strong columns" criteria. In DC2, the latter is not imposed, but soft storey failures have to be mitigated anyway;local overstrength capacity, deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity are required;the control of the global plastic capacity is made through limitation of drift and of second order effects and, for moment resisting frames, by the respect, at each storey level, of a criteria showing that the storey possess the energy dissipation potential required for stability. The basis of this criteria is explained in the paper.

Steel plate shear walls with combinations of shear panels, boundary elements, and beam-to-column connections are able to absorb and dissipate incoming seismic energy through the different yielding mechanism of the shear panels. Perforated shear panels have been introduced as a viable alternative inmany structural applications. The cyclic performance of perforated shear panels on the failure modes in the boundary components of three-story shear walls with two different types of beam-to-column connections (shear and moment resisting) is numerically studied in this study. To achieve the main goals, several experimental recent activities are simulated and validated using the finite element method by ABAQUS. Therefore, two types of perforated shear panels, one of which was perforated according to recent experimental suggestions subjected to cyclic loading, are selected. The numerical results of the computational specimens are compared in terms of maximum shear strength, initial stiffness, failure modes, and energy-dissipating capacity. Finally, the perforated shear panel which has reduced the failure modes of the boundary components of steel shear walls is suggested.

The low modulus of elasticity and high tensile strength of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bars results in designs often governed by deflection and crack control at the serviceability limit state. Bond characteristics of GFRP bars - the manner and efficiency with which force is transferred to the bar from the surrounding concrete - significantly impacts the control of cracking provided by the bar. Unlike standardized steel reinforcing bars, GFRP bars are manufactured with a variety of surface preparations and conditions - each effecting bond. To address this in design, a bond coefficient - termed kb in this work - is adopted to normalize bond characteristics of different bars and permit the use of single design equations. This paper reports a pilot study of two simple test methods intended determine this coefficient. The ASTM D7913 pull-out test is suitable for rapidly determining relative values of kb. The non-standard prism tension test has the advantage of providing quantitative, in addition to qualitative comparison of cracking behaviour as it is affected by reinforcing bar type. The authors propose the evaluation of kb using ASTM D7913 but confirming the overall bond performance using a smaller number of prism tension tests. Preliminary results presented in this paper indicate that three of the four GFRP bars considered have better bond characteristics than the ASTM A615-compliant bars to which they were compared.
