Externally bonding Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) to steel, as a means of increasing the load carrying capacity of steel and concrete-steel composite beams, has become popular over the last couple of decades. When compared with traditional Intermediate Modulus (IM) CFRP, and due to the elastic modulus being higher than that of steel, high modulus (HM) and ultra-high modulus (UHM) CFRP laminates provide substantial load transfer in steel beams prior to yielding of steel. Several studies have been conducted on the bond between steel and CFRP, addressing the different failure mechanisms. Several bond-slip relations have been proposed, primarily for IM CFRP, based on cohesive failure within the bonding epoxy adhesive. This study aims to develop bond-slip models for both IM and UHM CFRP laminates bonded to steel, focusing on failure due to debonding at the steel-adhesive interface. Double lap shear tests were carried out using both IM and UHM CFRP laminates and the behavior of the specimens are compared with the finite element model results based on the developed bond-slip models. The double-lap shear joint stiffness was found to be higher for the UHM CFRP-steel bond, while the interfacial fracture energy was found to be higher for the IM CFRP-steel bond.

The composite-type anchorage, which combines the advantages of the mechanical-type and bonded-type anchorages, is expected to be a promising anchorage system for superior FRP tendons. This paper investigates the mechanical properties of a novel composite anchorage system for CFRP tendons. To examine the static and long-term mechanical properties of this novel anchorage system, a series of experimental studies were performed. The failure mode, load-carrying capacity, anchoring efficiency and creep behavior of the composite anchorage were investigated. The effects of pre-tightening force and grouted material on the anchorage performance were also examined. The results show that the novel composite anchorage system exhibited a satisfactory anchorage efficiency above 0.95 with an enhancement in load-carry capacity by 60.4%. Anchorage performance did not always positively correlate with the increasing of sand dosage in the grouted material. The optimum dosage of sand should not exceed 10%. Besides, the creep slippage of the novel composite anchorage under sustained load increased with the rising ambient temperature. The novel composite anchorage system experienced small creep slippage at normal temperature under high stress levels. This study provides insights into the mechanical properties of the newly developed composite anchorage, which will be beneficial to provide guidance for its future development and practical application.

This paper presents an experimental study on seismic retrofit of circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns with FRP composites. Three RC columns strengthened with Polythylene Naphthalate (i.e., PEN) FRP composite, which has a much larger rupture strain than conventional FRPs, were tested under combined axial loading and cyclic lateral loading. Three conventional CFRP-confined RC columns and one un-strengthened control column were also tested for comparison. The control column was found to fail due to the buckling of the longitudinal steel reinforcement and be of shortage of ductility, while the major role of FRP confinement in cases of slender circular RC columns is to prevent the spalling of concrete cover and the buckling of longitudinal reinforcement. Use of different FRP jackets and FRP stiffness had a marginal effect on the overall load-deformation responses particularly under a lower axial load ratio. Numerical simulations based on OpenSees, into which a cyclic stress-strain model for longitudinal reinforcement previously developed by the authors was implemented, were conducted to facilitate an in-depth understanding of the test results and the corresponding strengthening mechanisms. The cyclic stress-strain model takes into account the buckling effect of steel reinforcement and the lateral confinement effect of FRP jackets. Further parametric studies revealed that under a high axial load ratio (e.g., 0.4), the consideration of buckling of longitudinal reinforcement is of more significance.

The paper describes an application of steel eccentric bracing with vertical shear link (inverted Y-bracing) for seismic retrofitting of an existing school building. The building is located in a little village of a high seismic zone in Italy. The existing structure presented several structural defects and irregularities which required an "ad hoc" intervention of seismic upgrading for both gravity and earthquake loads. The proposed technical solution, also in agreement with the new seismic regulations, improves the seismic performance, increasing stiffness and resistance, as well as global ductility, of the lateral-force resisting system. The upgraded structure allowed satisfaction of current minimum Italian code requirements, evaluated by means of static nonlinear analysis. The paper highlights general design concepts, while also providing some details about capacity design of connections between the newly added structural elements and the existing structure. Global modelling issues and connection design offer perspectives on research needs for this type of applications.

Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive noble gas without colour, odour and taste to which humans are usually exposed. Prolonged exposure to radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer among smokers and non-smokers. Radon concentrations across Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have remained a potential risk of health concerns because the old facilities on campus may contribute to the generation of radon gas. Therefore, this study aimed to compare radon levels between the old (Faculty of Science) and new (Faculty of civil engineering) buildings of UTM, and also to compare concentrations of radon between ground floor and second floor within the two types of buildings. The RAD-7 was selected as the equipment to measure radon concentrations at the laboratories, meeting rooms and lecturer rooms at the monitored buildings. The radon content of both the old and new buildings did not exceed the WHO reference level of 100 Bqm(-3). However, radon at the new building was present at higher concentrations than that at the old buildings on average due to energy efficient and airtight design of the new building.

This paper presents the test results of an experimental study aimed at investigating the flexural behavior of prestressed high and normal strength concrete filled fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP)- rectangular tubes (CFFT) beams. Two unbonded post-tensioned (PCFFT) beams were constructed with different concrete compressive strength ranged from 40 to 70 MPa. All beams had identical cross-sectional of 305 x 406 mm(2). The beams were tested under a four-point bending. The test results confirm the feasibility of using post-tensioned rectangular CFFT system for flexural members. The results indicate that the PCFFTs beams are capable of developing very high inelastic flexural deformations and ultimate capacity. High-strength and normal-strength concrete prestressed CFFT beams show almost similar inelastic load-deflection behaviors. While increasing the concrete compressive strength from 40 to 70 MPa enhanced the initial stiffness and load before cracking. After cracking, however, prestressed CFFT beam constructed with high-strength concrete exhibit only a 7% increase in the ultimate flexural moment capacity with no significant change in the ultimate deflection compare to normal-strength concrete beam. The proposed analytical model based on partially confined concrete model successfully predicts the flexural moment capacity of the tested beams with satisfactory accuracy on average of 1.08 +/- 0.03. However, further experimental tests are needed to better understand the flexural behavior of PCFFTs with a wide range of concrete compressive strength.

Zeolite is an abundant mineral in Indonesia, but is not maximally utilized. Natural zeolite possesses several properties, such as dehydration, adsorption, ion exchange, catalysis, and separation. In general, natural zeolite contains both organic and inorganic impurities that cover their pores. Thus, natural zeolite should be initially activated to improve its absorption. This study aimed to determine the effect of NaOH solution concentration, temperature, volume, and zeolite diameter on the adsorption capacity of zeolite. The highest adsorption capacity of 7.03% was obtained at the optimal concentration of 1.0 N NaOH solution (100 degrees C) with a volume of 50 mL at a diameter of 2.00 mm during chemical activation.

This keynote speech focuses on cyclic behavior and seismic design of steel and composite shear walls, two efficient and ductile lateral force resisting systems. First, a summary of types of steel shear walls and their seismic performance are presented. Then, recent advances on the unstiffened steel plate shear walls are discussed. Unstiffened steel plate shear walls have been studied, and their design procedures are currently in most seismic design codes. However, their use has been quite limited. The main reason is that in the current unstiffened steel plate shear walls, included in the seismic codes, such as the North American specifications and the Eurocode, quite large lateral forces are applied to the boundary columns creating significant bending moments in the columns. The other reason for reluctance in using the existing steel plate shear wall is the very high cost of the field-welded moment connections that are currently used in this system. The keynote speech will discuss innovative systems developed in recent years to eliminate both problems. The second part of the keynote speech will focus on the steel-concrete composite systems. Available cyclic tests are briefly summarized, and recent developments and innovative systems will be discussed.

This paper presents three types of vibration isolators to enhance the comfort for residents inside buildings near subways. Stacked sandbags formed the first type of isolator. An elastic and closed capsule filled with sand and rubber particles is the second type of isolator. The third type of isolator is laminated thick rubber bearing with a sliding bottom. The materials and components of the three isolators are described first. Then, the vertical stiffness values, the damping ratios, and the ultimate bearing capacities of the above isolators are tested in a laboratory, and the suppression effectiveness for subway-induced vertical vibrations are investigated by two full-scale buildings near subway transportation. The results indicated that the bearing capacity of the first isolator is the lowest, but the damping ratio is the highest. For the second isolator, the vertical stiffness and damping ratio can be adjusted by changing the mixture ratio of sand particles, and the bearing capacity is improved significantly. For the third isolator, the damping ratio is the smallest, but the sliding bottom is capable of isolating earthquake ground motions. After installation of the three isolators, the human comfort inside the buildings satisfied the limit values, proving that they are effective as base isolation methods for buildings near subways.

Resource leveling, a resource management technique, plays an important role in developing a realistic schedule, aims to maintain a uniform resource profile, and avoids construction delays. Many researchers in the past have tried solving resource-leveling problems (RLPs) using various numerical, heuristic, metaheuristic approaches. RLP is a classic example of a combinatorial problem. It can be solved using a metaheuristic approach to obtain the optimal or near-global optimal solution. This study aims to solve RLP using ant colony optimization (ACO), a metaheuristic approach. MATLAB2019 is used to implement the ACO model. A real-time project is used in this study to verify the efficiency of the proposed model. The results obtained from the ACO model are near-global optimum solutions that eliminate premature convergence.
