Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) systems have been widely used for strengthening of concrete members to accommodate various load increase needs. While FRP strengthening systems are designed to provide the required strength increase, the strengthened members also need to accommodate the new higher loads under fire conditions and meet the code specified fire resistance rating requirements. The fire resistance rating of FRP strengthened members can be enhanced using external fire protection systems, such as fiber boards, fiber blankets and spray-applied fire resistive materials. Current codes and standards such as ACI 216.1, PCI and Eurocode 2 do not provide any guidelines on how to calculate the fire resistance rating of concrete members with supplemental fire protection systems. This paper presents a rational design approach for evaluating the fire resistance rating of RC members strengthened with FRP and protected with cementitious spray applied fire protection systems. The proposed rational fire design approach mainly involves establishing thermal material properties of fire protection system, establishing fire performance of fire protection system through full-scale fire test, performing thermal analysis using finite element approach, performing sectional analysis at elevated temperatures and validating the design approach with data obtained from full-scale fire tests.

This paper presents the axisymmetric vibration responses of sandwich Functionally graded material (FGM) shallow spherical caps with lightweight porous core subjected to uniformly external loads and shell-foundation Pasternak interaction. Based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) with von Karman geometrical nonlinearity, the governing equations are established. By using the Galerkin method and the Runge-Kutta method, the fundamental frequencies and the nonlinear dynamic responses of the shell are obtained. The effects of porosity coefficient, geometrical parameters, and foundation are considered.

A method is proposed to calculate the buckling strength of gusset plates (GPs) using stability functions. The method requires a division of GPs into sub-elements and calculation of their equivalent bending stiffness. Using these sub-elements, a GP stiffness matrix can be formulated. The elastic buckling load is the axial load that makes the determinant of this matrix equal to zero. The method is evaluated by comparing its strength predictions against the buckling load of tested GPs reported in literature and the predictions obtained using the AISC method. When the brace end of the GP was fully free or had rotational restraints, the method predicted an average of 18% and 92% respectively of the experimental values. The AISC method provided 13% and 35% of the experimental values when using effective length factors of 1.2 and 2.0 respectively.

Wetland's concept are becoming a popular alternative to traditional technologies for processing wastewater from domestic as well as industrial, especially for tertiary treatment of wastewater. Constructed Wetland (CW) is the assemblage which performs the treatment of wastewater by the process of unit operation techniques using natural process. It helps in achieving effective treatment efficiency in a sustainable manner. Due to an increase in wastewater loading, insufficient arrangement of sterilization and sewage treatment prompts in ecological impact and contamination of water bodies. It leads to water stress and depletion of good quality of ground water. Therefore, wastewater and reusing techniques will be essential in the coming days to overcome the crisis. CW is an effective alternative to overcome this situation. CW systems seem to be viable alternative in treating predominantly domestic wastewater and some type of industrial wastewater. In this method, the readied wet soil is successful for eliminating natural and suspended solids, while the evacuation of nitrogen is moderately low, however, can be improved by utilizing a combination of various sorts of wet soil arranged to satisfy water system reusing guidelines. In this research study, feasibility analysis has been carried out with domestic wastewater and industrial wastewater to ascertain the efficiency of CW in treating the wastewater and also the problems and limitations in handling the same was also assessed. General instruction regarding CW operation built for the treatment of specific wastewater types also ascertained in this research study. The important points that should always include suggestions about the pre-treatment stage, plants, and permeable media and built wetland operation strategies, etc., are discussed in this research paper. CW with integrated/hybrid model by linking both horizontal and vertical flow units was fabricated in a lab-scale hybrid wetland unit for treating the wastewater. Ba

Peat soils exhibit very high organic and moisture contents with corresponding very high compressibility and creep characteristics and very low strength. These poor engineering properties make peat soils particularly unsuitable as a foundation material for road pavements with attendant high risks of instability during both initial construction and in service with unpredictable and often excessive long-term deformations. Almost 20% of Ireland is peatland and roads have been historically constructed directly on peat, albeit with mixed results and often high, long-term maintenance costs. Ground improvement by means of excavation and replacement of peat is frequently adopted and more recently piled embankments are increasingly used in areas of deep peat deposits in Ireland for major roads. However, these mitigation measures can have high construction costs and attendant risks as well as large resultant waste volumes and environmental sustainability impacts. The paper briefly reviews the historical approaches to road construction in peat soils both in Ireland and internationally. Analytical methods to assess flexible pavement foundation stability and deformation under static embankment and dynamic traffic loading are reviewed. A number of case histories of low capacity (less than 2000 AADT) road foundation design and performance on Irish peat soils are described. The benefits of surcharge upon the creep performance of peats are discussed and back calculated, and field performance data from one site is presented. Some conclusions are drawn as to the potential for increased application of geosynthetic base reinforcement and ground improvement approaches in peat soils which are less commonly adopted at present in Ireland.

This article proposes an innovative steel modular MRF with knee brace elements for seismic applications called Moment-Resisting Knee Braced Frame (MKF). In this system, conventional MRF beam-to-column connections are replaced with a combination of simple beam-to-column connections, rigid beam-to-beam stub connections and knee brace elements. The proposed system eliminates CJP welds and adopts shop-welded, field-bolted assemblies. Furthermore, the lateral stiffness of the structure is expected to increase as a result of the application of knee elements. A 5-storey office building comprising the proposed system on the exterior walls is selected and studied. The frame is analysed using the Performance Based Plastic Design (PBPD) approach and designed as per the Canadian steel design standard. Nonlinear static and response history analyses are carried out to evaluate the seismic response of the proposed system and examine the validity of the analysis and design approaches. The results reveal that the proposed system offers a reliable seismic performance and can be a viable alternative to conventional MRFs. It is also found that the PBPD approach leads to a realistic representation of structural performance by utilizing the plastic capacity of structural components.

This paper presents the study of a slope stability failure due to a roadway widening using an FEA program. It consists of a case study of static load induced liquefaction in a simple roadway widening project constructed in the north eastern part of Ohio in 2008. The widening required an embankment fill, which moved nearly 4 feet vertically and 1 foot laterally after days of installation. The main objective of the work is to compare different approaches dealing with this static liquefaction situation;in this case, limit equilibrium method (LEM) and finite element analysis (FEA) method are being studied. The use of two approaches is important to show how the results can be compared and to determine the reliability of the factor of safety (FS). The mechanism that caused the rotational slope failure was the liquefaction of sand layers beneath the road embankment. The study explains how this loose sand layer could be simulated with the use of FEA which provides an advanced tool to perform a more complete and accurate analysis. The study concluded that each method has its advantages and limitations;however with the use of FEA, it was possible to build a more realistic model since advanced material model and properties could be defined which are more adequate for such cases as liquefaction in sands.

Congestion charging is one of the potential measures to control traffic congestion and reduce emissions in urban area, particularly in Hanoi, where both the population and traffic demand are increasing rapidly. This paper is to evaluate the impact of congestion charging on traffic and vehicle emissions in the city based on VISUM macroscopic traffic simulation software. Multiple testing scenarios were developed with assumptions in different sizes of charging zone and charging fee rates. The results showed that congestion charging in Hanoi could reduce the traffic volume in the main road by 10-25%, potentially reduce CO2 emission by 10-27%. The size of the charging zone, charging method, and charging rate are key factors that directly influence congestion charging. This study is supported by Hanoi DOT and is considered as a reference to support the development of Hanoi's congestion charging policies and regulations in the future.

Electric mobility is the key objective for many emerging countries in the context of increasing climate change and environmental pollution. The main reasons for this push are efforts to reduce air and noise pollution thus creating a more attractive cities for residents and tourist whilst also reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs). Transport electrification is one of the popular trends and is a key pillar for achieving decarbonization. In emerging cities, less incentives are considered to examine how they influence consumers' behavior. This article aims at considering the effects of policy measures in terms of financial incentives. A binary regression model was used to evaluate consumer's decision. 700 individuals were invited to participate in the survey to reflect their different preferences and 633 samples were selected for further analysis. The results identified that perception of the government incentives like tax and fees incentives, loan incentives, and electric price reduction can significantly impact electric motorcycle adoption behavior. The results of surveys may serve as initial advance for transport authorities and electric vehicle manufactures in promoting electric mobility in motorcycle (MC) dominated emerging cities.

The depletion of fossil fuel and the harmful environmental emissions such as greenhouse gases (GHG) has led to continuous effort to produce high value-added products from the biomass. With more than 5.8 million hectares of oil palms, Malaysia's oil palm industry has been one of the largest contributors to oil palm biomass. Oil palm production in Malaysia is increasing every year, resulting in an abundance of oil palm waste. Due to these circumstances, Malaysia has the great potential to utilise oil palm biomass in a wide range of applications, including renewable energy. The characteristics of biomass complement the ability to generate reliable energy sources. This study will brief the potential utilisation of the oil palm residues from plantations, which are oil palm frond (OPF) and oil palm trunk (OPT)-the availability, characteristics, and related technologies on biomass conversion.
