The ground structure of the coastal road of Hai Phong-Nam Dinh alignment consists of 10 to 20-m-thickness soft soil layers, lying near the surface, so the deep treatment methods, such as sand column, sand well, prefabricated vertical drain (PVD), soil-cement, etc. will be a reasonable choice. However, each method has pros and cons. In Vietnam, the river sand resource is increasingly scarce and sand exploitation is causing serious environmental problems. It is necessary to study another material to replace the river sand. The paper proposes the soft soil improvement method by sea sand-cement columns. The laboratory experiment tests allow defining the sea sand and soft soil properties, and the sea sand-cement mixture properties. The experimental results show that the influence of cement content on the strength of sea sand-cement samples corresponding to the curing time. Additionally, the unreinforced soil and single and four-column reinforced soil physical models in 1:10 small-scale have been set up to investigate the effectiveness of sea sand-cement columns in soft soil improvement. The physical model results indicate that the presence of sand-cement columns in the ground decreases significantly the soft soil and embankment settlements.

There is a need for rational methods to estimate behavior of unsaturated soils for analysis and design of pavement structures. The attributes of a desirable method would comprise low cost, reasonable accuracy and technical soundness. The equilibrium suction has a direct influence on the subgrade resilient modulus and vertical movement due to swelling and shrinking of expansive clays. The current AASHTOWare Pavement ME software package utilizes the enhanced integrated climatic model (EICM) for applying the effects of climate on the pavement materials. The EICM utilizes the depth to groundwater table to compute moisture content and the corresponding suction in the subgrade. However, research studies have revealed that other critical factors also influence the equilibrium suction. In this study, a mechanistic model is presented to predict equilibrium suction considering the effects of the unsaturated soil moisture diffusion coefficient. Based on a statistical analysis, an equilibrium suction prediction model is generated from readily available parameters, i.e., Thornthwaite moisture index (TMI), clay content (%) and relative humidity. The results of this study showed that the regression model provides reasonable prediction accuracy with a small test MSE of 0.03.

One of the major challenges for modern society is to continue providing sustainable, affordable, and available transportation networks for people and goods. The challenge is twofold: (1) new structures should be built in a more resilient and a more durable and affordable manner, and (2) existing structures need to be maintained, retrofitted, or reset for a new purpose. Over recent times, different visions for improving transport engineering in these areas have been defined in Europe. Like many transport and geotechnical engineering platforms, European Large Geotechnical engineering Platform (ELGIP) declares the readiness of the field of geotechnical engineering to contribute to the realization of these visions. The focus is on both engineering approaches and those which are helping to add a new dimension to Earth Structures in transport engineering-sustainability, availability, and affordability. This paper describes some opportunities that are currently on offer in this field. In Europe, the engineering approach is recorded in EC 7-Eurocode 7 in which the principle of limit state design was accepted, and the geotechnical categories classification is used. The second generation of EC 7 is now undergoing the final phase of preparation. The question on how to consider sustainability in Earth Structures in Transport engineering is covered by describing geotechnical solutions for reducing energy and resource consumption. Moreover, proactive measures to guarantee transport infrastructure availability and affordability under extreme circumstances (e.g., natural and man-made hazards) are discerned. In conclusion, this paper explains why geotechnical engineering should devote appropriate attention to the use of the building information model (BIM) for Earth Structures in Transport Infrastructure generally.

The main objective is to investigate the present proceedings on the blast loads on the civil structures as an act of terrorism, industrialization or mining actions. Explosives are detonating materials that explode with high pressure on ignition. The blast explosion inside or at a proximity distance of a structure damages the structure physically, incurring trauma/death to the inmates or people in the surrounding. During the present Anthropogenic epoch, the act of terrorism has surged targeting mainly the commercial units, high-rise buildings, 5-star hotels and crowded places. The bombing action is done through a small packet bomb to suicidal trucks or even aeroplanes. Customarily while designing the imposed loads on a structure, the structural engineers consider the dead, live, lateral and seismic loads but do not consider the blast load. In designing important and high rising structures, it has become pertinent to consider blast loads (dynamic loads) along with other loads. Since it was not warranted, there was no code provision for the blast load in the design of structures. The present research is an attempt to review all the old literature available and to find the research gap before proceeding with the calculation of blast loads in the design of a structure. The conclusions derived from the research gap shall be helpful to understand the behaviour of blast loads on structures and can be useful in designing the important structures.

Among different details in old riveted railway bridges throughout the world, connections such as stringer-to-floor-beam double-angle connections are one of the most fatigue-prone details. These connections are subjected to fatigue loadings due to the secondary out-of-plane deformation. However, there are only few traditional strengthening techniques that are proved to be not so effective in permanently addressing the fatigue issue. In this study, a novel un-bonded prestressed retrofitting solution is proposed for strengthening riveted/bolted steel angle connections. The strengthening system consists of prestressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) rods, which are clamped at the ends using mechanical wedge-barrel anchors. The prestressing force of CFRP rods are transmitted to the strengthened member using the clamps functioning purely by friction. Therefore, an adhesive bonding is not required, and, no damage is imposed to the parent structure. The installation procedure consists of two main stages: presetting the wedges into the barrels, and, prestressing the CFRP rods. For the presetting, a novel method is introduced, making it possible to apply high presetting forces on-site. The application of prestressing force is done by pumping the hydraulic jacks. The static behavior of the strengthening system is experimentally investigated through pull-off tests. In addition, the fatigue behavior of the strengthening system is studied by the laboratory tests on stringer-to-floor-beam double-angle connections. Furthermore, stress distribution in the clamping system and connected parts was analyzed using a Finite Element (FE) model leading to final design of the system.

An experimental program on the drop-weight impact response of pultruded composites subjected to low-velocity impact loading was performed. The specimens were struck by impactors of various geometries in order to investigate the effects of geometric parameters on the damage evolution of such material. To minimize other parametric effects such as impact energies, impact velocities, and impactor masses, the specimens were subjected to a fixed impact energy level of 240 J with a uniform impactor mass and a constant dropping height. The impact characteristics and performance acquired from the tests were compared to present the differences of impact response on the pultruded composites. Damage evaluation was introduced to compare the failure modes associated with the impact events. The results demonstrated that the extent of damage varies with respect to the change of the sharpness of the impactors. The impact performance in terms of maximum impact load and energy absorption ratio increases with the increase of the flatness of the impactor surfaces (initial contact area) whereas the contact duration decreases slightly with respect to the initial contact areas.

For several years the crack propagation test data of bituminous mixtures according to CSN EN 12697-44 have been collected and evaluated at CTU in Prague. Over time the standardized test procedure was adapted to the conditions more suitable to be used in the Czech Republic-in terms of test specimen compaction, availability of cutting discs of suitable thickness, diameter of test specimens, loading speed etc. Some of the other conditions of the test were adapted as well as the procedures of data logging and subsequent evaluation of raw data. Over the years it has been identified that the strict focus only on fracture toughness is probably not correct or at least not sufficiently effective. The characteristics of fracture energy have been introduced and further studied. This paper compares the fracture toughness and fracture energy characteristics of selected sets of various types of asphalt mixtures.

While almost all asphalt paving contractors in Vietnam are using virgin, non-renewable materials (i.e., aggregates and bitumen) to produce conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA), most contractors in the United States, Europe and Japan are producing warm mix asphalt (WMA) with reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). WMA can be produced and paved at lower temperatures, reducing energy consumption and emissions released during production and paving of asphalt mixtures. Use of RAP can reduce the demand for non-renewable resources. When RAP is used in WMA, their environmental benefits can be combined, making the produced mixture more sustainable. This study presents a life-cycle assessment (LCA) to compare the environmental benefits of WMA with RAP to those of the conventional HMA currently produced by most of the asphalt producers in Vietnam. The WMA mixtures with 20-50% RAP were designed to have performance similar to the conventional HMA in the LCA. Based on this LCA analysis, it was determined that WMA with the addition of from 20 to 50% RAP provides a reduction of 16.6-27.0% global warming (CO2-eq) and 17.8-28.7% energy consumption impact of HMA when it is designed to have the same performance as the conventional HMA.

Various improvements have been proposed to the seismic code Eurocode 8 in recent years. In its current state, the norm under revision has been expanded in content and structure. Modifications in the definition of ductility classes, behaviour factors, inter-storey drift sensitivity (ISDS) coefficient, the local hierarchy criteria, and the design rules for medium (DC2) and high ductility class (DC3) structures are a few of the notable changes to be mentioned for the design of steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs). In MRFs, which are highly susceptible to lateral deformations, design is often governed by stability requirements in the verification of the significant damage limit state. This leads to the use of heavier sections in members to meet the lateral stiffness demand. In the computation of ISDS, the draft code takes advantage of the design over-strength ratio and the material variability in the dissipative zones. This paper aims to study and compare seismic designs of MRFs using the revised specific rules for steel design in the new code which is now at a working draft level. The flexibility achieved due to the mentioned considerations is first studied through case study frames. Once designed, the performance of these frames is examined through non-linear analyses using OpenSees.

Risk and reliability are important aspects of geotechnical structures. Soil is highly variable. Pile tests are extremely expensive and labor-intensive. The paper proposes a reliable method to predict the bearing capacity of the pile using AI-based models like Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS), Group method of data handling (GMDH) and Genetic programming (GP) using data of pile dynamic tests conducted on various sites in Indonesia. The performance of the model is ascertained using various performance parameters and are compared among themselves using Rank analysis and Taylor diagrams. The reliability indices of each model are calculated and compared. GP and MARS are concluded as robust models for estimating bearing capacity while performance of GMDH is not exciting.
