Despite many technical improvements, concrete still faces quality degradation problems caused by cracks. Many approaches have been studied more extensively, meeting the criteria and realizing that management should be better than preventing the cracks in concrete. With the ability to be easily cultured and form CaCO3, the potential to use Bacillus subtilis natto in full-scale application is promising. Although alkali-tolerant bacteria have been widely studied to maintain enough vegetative cells until the crack formation, their survival is minimal, even when the bacteria were transformed into spores before mixing to concrete. Current works still lack a better understanding of the grave of the factors affecting the fundamental reactions involved, particularly bacterial growth and its bio-mineralization in harsh conditions as concrete. This study clarifies the bio-mineralization of Bacillus subtilis natto with the effects of nutrient-low medium to find a suitable way to protect and maintain the self-healing abilities for a long time. The high survival rate of bacteria immobilized in lightweight aggregate contributes essential information for maintaining self-healing ability at later-age of concrete (durability).

The use of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) in civil construction applications with near-surface mounted (NSM) method has gained considerable popularity worldwide and can produce confident strengthening and repairing systems for existing concrete structures. The bond among FRP composites-concrete is very important to the accomplishment of the NSM FRP strengthening system. Different failure types (concrete crushing, FRP rupture, debonding) have been recorded in the literature about the bond among NSM FRP-adhesive-concrete. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) traditionally refers to the process of implementing monitoring systems to measure structural responses in real-time and to identify anomalies and/or damage at early stages. Until now, little research effort has been devoted to the identification of damage at its earliest stages for this kind of reinforcement technique. In this work we will use linear mixed effects models as a statistical tool to assess the structural integrity of our subject structures from electromechanical impedances captured from PZT sensors installed on NSM FRP RC beams to be inspected. This type of models is an extension of linear regressions models that describe the relationship between a responsive variable and independent variables. They contain both fixed effects and random effects. Fixed-effects terms are usually the regression part, while the random effects are generally associated with individual experimental units drawn from a population.

This paper investigates the influence of the variation in the groundwater table on ground vibrations from underground tunnels by an analytical model. The saturated porous medium is used to model the soil layer under the groundwater table, and the dry single-phase medium is applied to simulate the soil above the groundwater table. The transfer matrix method and wave transformation are applied to derive the solution for a tunnel in a dry/saturated layered half-space. Ground vibrations from a tunnel in a three-layered half-space are computed by using the proposed model. The numerical results demonstrate that the vibration levels increase as the groundwater table drops. The displacement field is similar to that of a saturated half-space when the groundwater table is above the tunnel, while it is similar to that of a dry single-phase half-space as the groundwater table is under the tunnel.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation to study recycling-methods of Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRP), extracted from Wind-Turbines Blades into concrete. Chemical composition (non-organic), mineralogical analysis, organic content, pozzolanic activity were examined. The effects of adding waste wind-turbine blade FRP-material (WTB-FRP) into concrete as a partial replacement of cement and fiber reinforcement were studied under the uniaxial compression and 3-point bending load. According to the test results, the high wooden content caused significant increase in the setting time of cement paste (up to 4 days for 40% of cement replaced) and significant drop in compressive and flexural strength if added as powder due to the retardant properties of wood powder and its high water absorption. The concrete mixture tests for the fibers showed slight decrease in compressive strength (up to 4% for 1,25% of fibers by weight) and increase in flexural strength up to 15%. No deterioration of E-glass by high alkalinity of hydrated cement was observed due to the protective layer of polymer formed around the fibers.

Predicting the shear strength of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete beams is one of themost complex problems in structural engineering applications. The development of accurate and reliable predictive models is essential and could help to reduce costs. The development of an alternative approach is, therefore, crucial for structural engineers. In this study, a database with 307 shear test results is collected from reliable sources to develop an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to predict the shear strength of FRP reinforced concrete beams. Four training algorithms, namely Levenberg-Marquardt (ANN-LM), Quasi-Newton method (ANN-QN), Conjugate gradient (ANN-CG), and Gradient descent (ANNGD) is used to train the ANN models. The evaluation of the models is performed and compared on the training dataset (70% of data) and the testing dataset (the remaining 30% of data), using common statistical criteria. The results show that the ANN-OSS model has the best prediction performance with the correlation coefficient (R) of 0.961, root mean square error (RMSE) of 35.53 and mean absolute error (MAE) of 20.63. These results confirmed the ANN model's effectiveness as a robust algorithm for predicting the shear strength of FRP reinforced concrete beams without stirrups.

Fisheries research has focused mainly on the dynamics of populations under exploitation in order to be able to inform what measures are needed for the sustainable harvesting of biological resources. A necessary tool for the successful achievement of this objective is to determine the age of the fish. Thus, this article will detail a method for identifying the age-based on scanning electron microscope analysis of dorsal shield and pectoral fins especially the calcified structures by making several sections, which are necessary in age determination and validation.

Geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) structures with excellent engineering performance are extensively utilized throughout the world in embankment engineering. GRS structures are commonly not utilized for applications where large settlements are anticipated. In this study, a GRS bridge approach reinforced with uniaxial geogrid and backfilled with graded crushed stones was instrumented during and post-construction for almost one year. Owing to the high construction height and the compressibility of the foundation soil, the GRS bridge approach has settled more than 0.3 m and continues to settle. That unexpected settlement induced a series of complicated response mechanisms related to the behavior of the reinforcement and vertical earth pressure at the base of the wall. Overall, even for such large settlements, the GRS bridge approach still performed adequately.

According to the Decision No. 1259/QD-TTg concerning the general planning of construction in Hanoi Capital to 2030 with a vision to 2050, one of the 15 priorities of urban development is to renovate the Historical Inner-City area of Hanoi for preserving and promoting the historical values of the city. Regardless massive changes of socio-economic conditions, the thousand-year-old public spaces in the Hanoi Historical Inner-City area remain sustaining with a remarkably vigorous vitality, becoming the witness of many historical events. However, hyper-urbanization progress is posing a visible threat to the sustainability of Hanoi Historical Inner, following the challenges of harmonizing the historical heritages in the urban architecture and landscape. One particular problem is poor management of public spaces;for which, classification appears to be a fundamental solution to the existing dilemma. Following that, the appropriate management for each class of public spaces can be developed.

Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) systems are generally fostered for applications on cultural heritage structures since they offer higher breathability and compatibility with precious masonry substrates. Historical masonry structures such as churches and palaces can often show curved elements that are inherently vulnerable to traction forces induced by overburden loads, moving supports or seismic actions. Application of FRCM on curved substructures induces a reduced or enhanced bond capacity if the substrate is concave or convex and both mode I and mode II fracture energies can be involved. In this study, a thorough experimental campaign was carried out to characterize a PBO-based FRCM system by means of uniaxial tensile tests on the single fibre bundles and on textile, as well as three-point bending and compression tests on the mortar matrix. To characterize the composite system, uniaxial tensile tests on composite coupons were carried out. Also, bond capacity of the system when adhered to straight bare bricks and curved masonry elements is investigated. The tested composite system demonstrates less susceptibility to sliding when tightened due to the good balance between reinforcement ratio and textile spacing. Concerning bond behavior on curved supports, results show, as expected, that curved supports ease better bonding response due to the activation of radial confinement stress.

Over the past years, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) rebars have been extensively used in the field of construction instead of steel rebars, thanks to their noncorrosive nature and high tensile strength. The bond strength between FRP rebars and concrete is a critical design parameter that controls reinforced concrete members' performance at the serviceability and ultimate limit states. The latter is generally affected by several factors. Unlike steel reinforcement, FRP materials are anisotropic, non-homogeneous, and linearly elastic, resulting in different force transfer mechanisms between the reinforcement and concrete. Therefore, accurate estimation of the bond strength is considered a critical element and might be helpful in many practical applications. In this study, a database including 477 experimental beam results gathered from the available literature is used to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the bond strength of FRPbars in concrete. TwoANN models using the Scaled Conjugate Gradient algorithm (SCG) and Variable Learning Rate Backpropagation algorithm (GDX) are constructed and evaluated in terms of bond strength prediction accuracy. The assessment of the models is conducted using statistical measurements, namely the correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE), and absolute mean error (MAE). The results show that the proposed ANN model can accurately predict the bond strength of FRP bars in concrete, which appears as an efficient numerical alternative for engineers.
