The growing scale of the high-speed railway network and that of the metro leads to an increasing number of intersections between these two traffic modes. To ensure the structural safety during the construction process of metro tunnels constructed beneath existing high-speed elevated lines, rows of isolation piles between these two different kinds of traffic infrastructures have been widely utilized. However, the vibration isolation effect of these piles during the metro vehicle operation process is still not well studied. In this paper, a model that accounts for the interaction between structures (i.e., high-speed bridge, isolation piles and metro tunnels) and soil foundations is established by employing a three-dimensional finite element method to investigate the vibration isolation effect of the isolation piles. The influence of different design parameters of isolation piles on the vibration characteristics of the complete system is investigated. Besides, this paper summarizes the law of wave peaks formation in the vibration magnification area. The results show that: (i) For surface, vibration isolation effect is influenced greatly by the spacing and diameter of isolation piles. The vibration isolation effect of the isolation pile is weakened considerably with increasing pile net spacing and is enhanced with increasing pile diameter. (ii) For high-speed bridge pier top, geometric parameters of isolation piles have little effect on the isolation efficiency. (iii) The increase of pile diameter and spacing makes wave peaks appear easily in the vibration magnifications region.

With the rapid development of road network, it is inevitable that new tunnels will be constructed under existing highway or railway bridges. Open excavation method is a typical way for building a new tunnel under bridge, leading to significant influences of the existing pile friction. Accounting for these issues, pile side grouting reinforcement method has been widely employed to improve the load bearing capacity of existing piles. However, the mechanism of this method is still not clear. In this paper, the compressive load capacity of pile with side grouting reinforcement is investigated. The research results reflect the effect and mechanism of pile side reinforcement on the enhancement of pile friction. For the existing pile in this paper, the reinforcement width has a reasonable range. The compressive load bearing capacity of the pile cannot be improved indefinitely with the increasing of the reinforcement width. Pile with a reinforcement width within 1000 mm shows similar characteristics of enlarged diameter pile. Although ultimate compressive load bearing capacity of these piles is greatly improved, they need a larger displacement to exert load bearing capacity. Shear strength and friction characteristics of the contact surface between the reinforced zone and the pile and supporting capacity of the soil under reinforced zone are the keys to enhance the pile compressive load bearing capacity.

Qatar is known by its harsh corrosive environment that is represented by high periodical humidity, and dust accompanied by temperature fluctuation. Also, geographically Qatar is considered a peninsula, this in turn makes it highly susceptible to seawater spray which contains high chloride contents. Recently, basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars are among the most investigated types of anti-corrosive advanced composites in structures. Accordingly, the present paper aims at examining the efficiency of sand coated basalt fiber reinforced polymer (SBFRP) bars and ribbed glass (GFRP) stirrups in resisting shear stresses in large scale basalt fiber reinforced concrete (BFRC) beams. The effect of the reinforcement ratio rho(f) (2.054 rho(fb) and 4.53 rho(fb) where pfb is the balanced reinforcement ratio) on the shear capacity of the tested beams was investigated. Results revealed an increase in the ultimate load capacity by 48% when the reinforcement ratio was increased from 2.054 rho(fb) to 4.53 rho(fb). Also, it was clearly noticed that the beam stiffness has significantly enhanced at higher reinforcement ratio, especially after the onset of first flexural crack.

In this study, the train and sleeper are simulated with three-dimensional (3D) models. A railway superstructure is modeled with the beam on elastic bearings. Stresses of prestressed steels in the sleeper were determined under the effect of dynamic load by using numerical simulation technique. The purpose of this study is to predict the fatigue life of the prestressed concrete sleeper (PCS) on the urban railway in Vietnam. Simulation calculations are conducted by SIMPACK software to determine the dynamic load of the train. The train and the track structure are considered interacting in a unified. MIDAS FEA software was used to calculate the stress of prestressed steels in the PCS. The fatigue life was calculated for PCS on Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien urban railway line based on the S-N curve. Both the proposed simulation and the solution technique are 3Dmodels, and the results are suitable with other authors. The effects of rail, rail pad, sleeper, vibration sleeper box, and vehicle speed on the dynamic response of the train are considered in detail. The numerical simulation results provide the fatigue life value for PCS is 101,502,519 cycles equal to 38.62 years. Fatigue life can be used to optimize the design and maintenance process for the urban railway.

Existing reinforced concrete (RC) columns that do not conform to current seismic detailing requirements carry the risk of non-ductile failure that can lead to catastrophic failure of the structure. The behavior of such non-ductile columns can be significantly improved by FRP jacketing to enhance the plastic hinges performance and shear strength of the columns, achieve ductile behavior of the structure, and minimize the potential collapse risk. This paper presents the results for dynamic full-scale tests performed of square RC columns retrofitted with FRP jacketing. The externally applied FRP was utilized at the anticipated plastic hinge location. Seven full-scale columns, five of which were retrofitted with FRP jacketing and two benchmark columns without retrofit, were tested under simultaneous axial and cyclic lateral loads. The results of these tests demonstrate the significant improvement of the lateral displacement and energy dissipation capacities of the retrofitted columns. The paper also describes the methodology used to construct backbone curves that were utilized to predict the theoretical seismic performance of the retrofitted columns. The proposed method follows the principles of the backbone curve development approach in ASCE/SEI 41-17 by employing sectional analysis to define key points on the nonlinear response curves of the columns. The experimental results of columns tested in this research program indicate that the proposed methodology produces backbone curves that compare well with the column response measured during the full-scale tests.

Interrelationships of seven representative end-bearing resistance prediction models normalized by an interpreted end bearing resistance were compared. A database containing the results of field load tests of drilled shafts socketed into soft rocks was established for this study. Soft rocks are defined as rocks with unconfined compressive strengths of less than 5 MPa. Results of the comparative analysis showed that normalized end bearing resistances of various prediction models range from 0.55 to 1.02. Design recommendations regarding lower and upper bounds of normalized resistances were provided. Mean displacements for predicted resistances ranged from 21.98 mm to 50.56 mm. Furthermore, a normalized end bearing resistance with displacement curve was developed on the basis of the analysis results to provide a graphical representation of the location of each prediction model in the established curve. Statistical analysis was also applied to compare the results of the prediction models and interpreted values.

A testing program of static pile load was conducted using a small-scale model to investigate some factors influencing pile group efficiency. Natural sandy and clay soils were put into a soil tank. The test piles have a small size with two different lengths. The studied types of soil include sand soil, sand-clay alternating layers' soil, and clay soil. There were a total of thirty-six tests with various spacing to diameter ratios (S/d) and length to diameter ratios (L/d). In sandy soil, the group efficiency. was always greater than 1, in which therewas a slight decrease in the group efficiency. when (L/d) increased and. decreased to 1 when (S/d) increased. In clay soil,. was always less than 1;however, when (L/d) increased,. increased significantly. Thus, the effect of the pile length should be considered for pile in clay soil, where. increased when (S/d) increased, which is clearly opposite to that of sandy soil. With the same parameters including the number of piles, pile dimensions, and (S/d) and (L/d) ratios, the order in term group efficiency. was obtained as follows: sand soil, sand-clay soil, and clay soil.

This paper analyses the effect of glucose supplementation in the treatment of anaerobically digested vinasse (AnVE) through reduction performance and biomass growth by using aerobic SBR system. The result revealed that the COD and ammonium reduction with the addition of glucose supplementation (65.3 +/- 6.0 and 30.0 +/- 5.5%) was greater than the reactor without glucose supplementation (23.6 +/- 10.8 and 18.7 +/- 6.0%). This can be due to the additional glucose as the carbon source for microbe metabolism nutrients. The biomass growth in the reactor with glucose supplementation increased rapidly over time, while there was no obvious biomass growth shown in the reactor without the addition of glucose. It is because glucose supplementation increased biomass accumulation in biomass production. The increment of biomass in the reactor with glucose supplementation can be further explained by the F/M ratio and biomass yield. The F/M ratio reduced when the biomass growth increased. Thus, the biomass yield started to decrease after the operation in week 2, until it reached maximum biomass growth. Therefore, it concluded that the addition of glucose supplementation in the treatment of AnVE showed a positive effect on the removal performance and biomass growth by using aerobic SBR.

During the design of reinforced concrete elements, satisfying serviceability limit state conditions is very important. To simplify the calculations of crack width, for the elements subjected to bending, the EN 1992-1-1 (2013) gives a restriction of bar diameter or bar spacing which satisfy allowable crack width (tables 7.2(N) and 7.3(N)). During the last decades, FRP reinforcement became a good replacement for steel reinforcement, especially in an aggressive environment. Calculation methods for reinforced concrete elements with FRP bars (FRPRC) are developed from calculation methods for reinforced concrete elements with steel bars. Now, more and more, these rules are implemented in some national codes, and they will be implemented in Eurocodes soon. Procedures for the calculation of maximum bar diameter and bar spacing to control crack width are shown in the paper. These two values depend on each other and the focus of the paper is set on calculations of the bar diameter. Due to different modulus of elasticity between FRP and steel, the tables used for steel cannot be used for concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars. Therefore, the parametric calculations of maximum FRP bar diameter are described in this paper and new tables and diagrams are shown. The calculations were made according to rules from EN 1992-1-1 (2013), paragraph 7.3.4 and Eqs. (7.8) and (7.9) but instead of the material properties for steel reinforcement, those for FRP reinforcement are used. For additional explanations and considerations, EC2 Commentary (2008) is used. Also, due to many types of FRP reinforcement, one table for different materials will not be sufficient. Therefore, for easier usage, diagrams for maximum value of bar diameter are developed and shown in the paper.

Energy consumption around the globe has been rising for many decades. A significant portion of this consumption occurs in residential buildings. Developing reliable methods to understand and predict energy use is essential in the global effort to become more sustainable. Many cities across the U.S. have mandatory energy benchmarking programs requiring large buildings to track and report their energy use. These openly available datasets have encouraged many researchers to study energy use and develop energy use prediction models. In this study, we employ Extreme Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, and Artificial Neural Network as three common Machine Learning methods to predict building energy use in eight U.S. metropolitan areas. By examining the models' performance, we also evaluate and compare the datasets provided by the benchmarking programs and we investigate whether the openly available datasets provide adequate input variables for energy use prediction. Based on the results, suggestions are provided to enhance the datasets and further improve building energy use research.
