The combination of extreme weather conditions and economic activities has increased the number of corrosive agents in the air. This phenomenon will lead to rust formation in various assets, such as vehicles and steel properties. A Corrosion Hazard Map of Peninsular Malaysia was produced by considering parameters from climate and wet deposition information that influenced atmospheric corrosion: wetness, rainfall, chloride, nitrate, and sulphate. The inverse distance weighting interpolation technique was applied to generate the map. The study discovered that the corrosion rate at the southern and central part of Peninsular Malaysia is at level five, while the highland area is at level one. The Corrosion Hazard Map produced from this study would become as additional information that possibly will benefit various sectors such as metal industries, construction, land development, automotive coating technology, and others.

Concerns have been raised over the presence of concrete slab and resulting composite action in jeopardising the concept of strong column and weak beam seismic design. This comprehensive finite element analysis (FEA) aims to study the effect of the degree of composite action and other two parameters;namely, size and location of the web opening, on the performance of steel-concrete composite extended end-plate RWS connections subjected to cyclic loading. It is apparent that the degree of composite action of RWS connections is an important factor in their seismic-resistant design. In particular, the low degree of composite action in RWS connections can result in the mitigation of the bottom flange fracture damage and the crushing and cracking of the concrete slab. It is concluded that extended end-plate RWS connections can be used in retrofitting existing and in new buildings in seismic areas.

In order to ensure the normal operation of the traffic under the bridge, reasonable calculation methods and construction techniques should be adopted for the construction of the newly added railway station. This paper establishes a structural calculation finite element model to calculate and analyze the various construction stages of the steel beam incremental launching construction of the newly-added Gaoping station on the Yichuang-Wanzhou Railway, and systematically study the mechanical properties of the steel beam in the process. The results show that: (1) The deflection of each rod can meet the requirements of the railway bridge steel structure construction specification. However, when the length of the front cantilever of the steel beam reaches 11.4 m, the maximum deflection of the upper and lower chord bars is close to the limit. (2) The load-bearing capacity of each member of the steel beam meets the requirements, which indicates that the structural design of the steel beam and the incremental launching construction plan are reasonable. (3) In view of the complexity and uncertainty of the incremental launching construction process, real-time monitoring of the construction process is required, and the beam should be dropped in time when abnormal conditions occur to ensure the safe operation of the existing line.

The dynamic load allowance (DLA) of the bridge structure is an important parameter in the bridge design. In order to study the variation law of displacement DLA and bending moment DLA of continuous girder bridge, taking 2 x 30 m continuous girder bridge and five-axis vehicles as the research object, the road roughness was simulated by the trigonometric series approach. With the help of ANSYS and APDL language, the influence of vehicle speeds, vehicle weights and road roughness on the displacement DLA and bending moment DLA are studied. The results show that the displacement DLA showed increasing trend with the increase of vehicle speed, and bending moment DLA showed increasing first and then decreasing;With the increase of body weight, the displacement DLA and bending moment DLA show a gradually increasing trend;Displacement DLA and bending moment DLA do have numerical differences. And the value of the displacement DLA is slightly larger than the value of the bending moment DLA. It is suggested that the displacement DLA and bending moment DLA should be distinguished in engineering design and dynamic load test. The research conclusion can provide reference for bridge structure engineering design and dynamic load test.

With continued development of urban rail transit networks, the quantity of overlapping metro tunnels is increasing. Long-term service performance of the tunnel structure can be threatened a lot by complicated dynamic response of tunnel-ground system under train load, especially in the overlapping cases. Based on a case of four overlapping tunnels in soft clay region, dynamic response of the tunnel-ground system and long-term settlement of the tunnels are investigated with finite element method (I-EM) and empirical method. It is shown that, maximum acceleration and dynamic principal stress of the lining in overlapping zone are 48.2% and 19.8%, respectively, larger than that in non-overlapping zone. The ten-year accumulation settlement of the tunnel in overlapping zone is 173.7% larger than that in non-overlapping zone. Uneven settlement occurs in the overlapping zone, and the radius of curvature of the tunnel (12,461 m) exceeds the requirements of the specification (15,000 m). Grouted reinforcement can control the uneven settlement well. Radius of curvature of the tunnel can be refined to 33,967 m, which meets the requirements of the specification.

Adaptive reuse has been an emerging means of conservation and commodification of built heritage worldwide. Its implementation is associable with the thrive in tourism industry for UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) localities. As seen in George Town WHS of Malaysia, conversion of heritage shophouses to function as boutique hotels is one of the common trends. However, observation and documentation on the physical impact of such cases are in sparse mode, thus compels the execution of this exploratory study. A preliminary inventory to identify heritage shophouses that legitimately met the meaning and criteria of a boutique hotel was performed, prior to conducting field observation to record the physical changes and modifications. Consequently, five buildings were identified and further scrutinised through field observation that gave special emphasis on their new interior layout. It is found that spatial provisions such as reception and lobby area, guest rooms, and en suite bathroom are inevitable for repurposing heritage shophouses into boutique hotels. Besides, integration of swimming pool was uncommon while setting up a rooftop garden was unlikely, implying from the collective cases.

Particulate matter (PM10) is the key indicator of air quality index in Malaysia and Southeast Asia's main haze-related pollutant. PM10 emanation is believed to cause the strongest harm to public health and the environment. Therefore, it is very important to study the temporal and spatial characteristics of PM10 and the weather parameters, hence the relationship between them can be identified. A database with hourly PM10 concentration and weather parameters were obtained from Department of Environment (DOE) Malaysia from the period of 2012-2016 at two study areas that are located in Klang Valley, namely, Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam. The temporal analysis for PM10 concentration was observed by using descriptive statistics, boxplot and time series plot whereas the spatial analysis was conducted using windrose diagram. The finding shows that the highest average concentration of PM10 at Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam in 2015 exceeded the Malaysia Ambient Air Quality Standard, which were 60.13 mu g/m(3) and 66.22 mu g/m(3) respectively. It was due to high particulate event (HPE) that had affected Malaysia during the period of Southwest Monsoon, where the massive land and forest fires came from Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia. According to the wind rose rose diagram, the wind mostly blew from northeast in January until February as Malaysia experienced northeast monsoon where rainfall happened. Shah Alam received stronger wind compared to the Petaling Jaya because the topography of city.

Textile reinforced concrete (TRC) has recently been developed to protect and strengthen civil engineering structures. Experimental tests on the TRC specimens were carried out using an innovative thermomechanical machine (20 kN-1200 degrees C) of the LMC2 laboratory (University Lyon 1, France). These tests were carried out by keeping a predefined tensile stress ratio (ratio between the tensile stress applied and the ultimate stress of TRC at 20 degrees C) in order to experimentally identify the failure temperature of TRC. In total, 26 thermomechanical tests on TRC were carried out by varying three tensile stress ratios (10%, 30%, 50%) and four thermal loading rates (2 degrees C/min;7.5 degrees C/min;15 degrees C/min;30 degrees C/min). The obtained results showed that the TRC failure temperature significantly increased as the stress ratio decreased from 50 to 10%. Moreover, the obtained results indicated that the failure temperature of TRC slightly evolved when the thermal loading rate increased from 2 to 15 degrees C/min and this one increased when the thermal loading rate increased from 15 to 30 degrees C/min.

The durability of reinforced concrete (RC) members reduce significantly under aggressive environmental conditions due to the corrosion of steel reinforcement. Also, corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete members can drastically reduce their load-carrying capacity. The use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars is an attractive alternative for steel reinforcement in RC members. However, their brittle failure nature due to the linear elastic stress-strain characteristics is a significant concern. The addition of discrete fibres in FRP reinforced RC members can improve the post-cracking behaviour and provide pseudo-ductility. This study aims to understand the behaviour of macro-synthetic poly-olefin (PO) fibre-reinforced RC columns with glass FRP (GFRP) rebar as internal reinforcement under pure compression. Eight RC columns of cross-section dimensions 305 mm x 305 mm were cast with GFRP rebars and different fibre dosages. The test matrix includes (i) control specimen with no fibres (ii) GFRP RC columns with 0.35% PO fibres (iii) GFRP RC columns with 0.70% PO fibres and (iv) GFRP RC columns with 1.0% PO fibres. Experimental results revealed that the macro synthetic fibre addition to FRP GFRP RC columns improves peak load carrying capacity under pure compression. Also, fibre addition improved the post-peak behaviour without undergoing a sudden drop in the load resistance. Sudden crushing of concrete in compression was prevented due to the presence of fibres which provided pseudo-ductility.

The seismic resistance of quite a few existing bridges may not be satisfactory for the current seismic design codes in Japan. Retrofit is needed for those bridges. To this end, the application of the device of the buckling restrained bracing (BRB) to a steel arch bridge as a damper (BRD) is explored. An arch bridge model based on the existing bridge is studied. A road is located on the top of the arch bridge. The nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis indicates that several vertical and diagonal members of the arch bridge are possibly damaged under large seismic loads. BRDs are installed to the girder on the top of the arch bridge to reduce the overall horizontal movement. A parametric study on the seismic performance of the arch bridge with the BRDs is then conducted by changing the length and the cross-sectional area of the yielding core of the BRD. The damage is indeed reduced by the BRDs. Yet even the best values of the parameters cannot save all the arch members: some vertical members are still possibly damaged, undergoing column buckling. Then more BRDs are installed to prevent such vertical members from buckling, connecting the joint in the middle part of the vertical member and the joint at the bottom of the adjacent vertical member. The numerical analysis shows that the buckling of those vertical members can then be avoided.
