The demand for more eco-friendly and efficient solution for soil stabilisation has become highly imperative in recent years, given the burning issue of climate change and environmental degradation. Although numerous efforts have been carried out to develop new methods adopting naturally occurring materials and processes, there are still very limited their successful applications in practice. Among them, the use of biopolymers has shown great potential. As there is still a significant lack of understanding of how this solution can performance under cyclic loading such as road and railway contexts, this study aims to investigate cyclic behaviour of Xanthan Gum (XG)-treated soil. A low plasticity soil prone to mud pumping was collected from the field and mixed with different XG contents (0.5-2% by mass), followed by a series of cyclic triaxial tests mimicking subgrade work condition. The results show that biopolymer can significantly promote cyclic resistance of soil by substantially reducing the accumulated excess pore pressure and minimising ultimate axial strain (<2.5%). With only 0.5% XG content, the soil can mitigate considerably its localised behaviour induced by heavy cyclic loads, thus alleviating the formation slurry at shallow layers of subgrade foundation.

This paper presents a study examining the use of recycled rubber grids to enhance the performance of ballasted tracks. The rubber grids were manufactured from discarded conveyor belt panels using the waterjet cutting process. Different grids with two aperture shapes, i.e., square and circle, and varying effective area ratios were prepared. Large-scale impact tests were conducted on ballast specimens with and without these grids to assess their performance. Results of this study show that incorporating rubber grids in ballast yields numerous benefits. Firstly, they mitigate the high-frequency impact forces through enhanced damping. Secondly, they reduce subsequent vertical and lateral settlements of the ballast assembly. And finally, they minimise the breakage of ballast particles. The study concludes that using recycled rubber grids can improve ballast performance while also offering obvious environmental benefits and promoting the principles of the circular economy.

One of the first steps in reducing energy demand is accurately predicting energy requirements in urban areas and improving the thermal performance of building envelopes, especially in the existing residential sector. As an indicator of the as-built thermal transmittance and airtightness of the building fabric, the heat loss coefficient (HLC) can be assessed using data collected in operation coupled with data-driven statistical models. Utilizing non-intrusive monitoring technologies, such as smart meters and online weather data can provide the opportunity to develop assessment methodologies applicable to a large number of dwellings without requiring expensive equipment setups and on-site inspections. Several authors recognized the need to characterize HLC using limited existing measurements, but access to high-quality data for testing the reliability and accuracy of such methods is often limited. Therefore, this study aims to demonstrate the applicability of dynamic black-box statistical modelling when considering a sample of real-life inhabited dwellings. The key findings of this research revealed challenges in selecting appropriate monitoring periods due to constraints in favourable weather conditions and gaps in sensor data. Moreover, the dynamic of the building as well as the presence of occupants, which had a significant impact on internal gains and losses, added complexity in selecting the monitoring frequency and quantifying the HLC from in-use data.

In order to reduce demolition waste and limit sand and gravel mining, the use of recycled aggregates (RCA) in concrete is becoming important. This also involves the use of chloride-contaminated material, which has rarely been used or is not permitted due to the risk of chloride-induced corrosion. In particular for components under dry conditions, e.g. interior walls, the use is unproblematic, provided that the chloride concentration is limited to a non-critical level. The aim is to investigate the properties of recycled concrete (RC) with 100% RCA with different chloride contents. Chloride-contaminated RCA was obtained from demolition construction sites and laboratory samples, crushed to a grain size fraction of 0 - 16 mm and characterised in regard to its physical and chemical properties. The chloride content was analysed on the RCA itself, on the eluate of the RCA and on the chloride-contaminated RC-samples produced from the RCA. The influence of the chloride containing aggregate on the corrosion behaviour was investigated by polarization tests on reinforcing steel in eluted solution and in RC. We intend to develop RC with up to 100% RCA (incl. Recycled sand and chlorides) according to the planned exposure. The expectation is to obtain a maximum chloride concentration for building components under dry and weathered conditions to avoid harmful corrosion. The results show that the RC-samples have lower chloride contents than the RCAs. The corrosion tests indicate that chloride contents of the RCA below 0.10 wt.-% do not lead to significant corrosion rates whereas the eluate is likely to initiate harmful corrosion.

This paper evaluates the potential of implementing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on post-World War II public housing in Poznan, Poland. It investigates the practicality of utilizing residential buildings' facades and roofs for solar energy generation. Using 3D models and solar radiation simulations via Rhino/UMI and Ladybug + Honeybee software, it assesses the buildings' solar exposure influenced by factors such as orientation, size, and surrounding vegetation. Economic viability is analyzed through initial costs, return on investment, and long-term energy savings. This paper details an experimental investigation involving shaking table tests on two composite foundations consisting of geosynthetic encased stone columns (GESC) with varying levels of geosynthetic encasement stiffness. The main objective is to examine the effect of the stiffness of geosynthetic encasement on the deformation behavior of the foundation models subjected to dynamic loading. The scaled-down foundation models were scaled in accordance with the similitude principles considering model size, stiffness of geosynthetic encasement, and input motions. The construction of the foundation models involved the use of gravel, sand, and geotextile reinforcement, and subsequently subjected to a sequence of sinusoidal excitations with rising amplitude. Results indicate the cumulative column settlements and soil settlements of the two foundation models increase notably as the input acceleration rises. The model with high stiffness of geosynthetic encasement has smaller settlements under the identical input motions in comparison to the model with low stiffness of geosynthetic encasement and has better seismic behavior in terms of settlement. In summary, with an increase in the stiffness of geosynthetic encasement, the deformation behavior of GESC composite foundation under dynamic loading is effectively improved.

Climate change and global warming increasingly require artificial climate control to alleviate thermal discomfort in buildings. Reflective materials, while effective for passive cooling in hot climates, degrade over time due to particle deposition and microbial growth, and can be less effective in climates with wide temperature swings, resulting in a greater need for artificial cooling. Thermochromic and self-cleaning materials are promising alternatives. The former adjusts reflectance with temperature changes, whereas the latter provide superhydrophobic surfaces and can degrade organic compounds, potentially extending the life of the building envelope. This paper analyzed recent advances and shortcomings in the use of such materials in buildings. A bibliometric analysis of 123 articles showed that most were published in 2022 (24.39%), predominantly from China (52.99%). Although their focus was primarily on translucent building envelopes (85.33%), application to opaque surfaces such as roofs (9.33%) and walls (5.33%) remained limited. Despite the growing interest, there were significant research gaps in the application of these materials to opaque surfaces, particularly roofs, which contribute significantly to heat gain in low-rise buildings in hot climates and are more exposed to natural degradation than other building surfaces.

Bradyseism, associated with the volcanic dynamics of the Campi Flegrei caldera, has characterised the Pozzuoli area for centuries. Its periodic ground uplift and subsidence and the consequent low-intensity and high-frequency seismic sequences generated during uplift phases, continuously impact the built environment and the population. During the 1969-1972 and 1982-1984 bradyseismic crises, rapid ground uplift and seismic activity, in the absence of modern monitoring instruments, led to the evacuation of the historic centre to safeguard the population from building damage and the feared eruption. The current crisis, ongoing since 2005, presents different seismic-deformation dynamics from those historically recorded, generating equally significant impacts on buildings and the population. This paper aims to compare the dynamics of the major bradyseismic crises and the relevant implications for the Pozzuoli area. The study examines the duration of the crises, ground deformation trends, the frequency and intensity of seismic events, and the different political and risk governance measures put in place, analysing the relevant impacts not only on the physical territory, such as the natural and built environment but also on the populations living within this volcanic region. The study enhances the understanding of the current situation of the Phlegraean territory and supports the identification and definition of a new Bradyseismic Risk scenario, aimed at renewing building, urban, and emergency planning strategies. This approach addresses both disaster mitigation and the resilience of urban contexts.

Incorporating GFRP stirrups as shear reinforcement in precast concrete tunnel lining (PCTL) segments is a practical approach to enhance the punching performance of infrastructure projects. Punching loads in tunnels can be induced by the expansion of rock or other geotechnical conditions on their extrados surfaces. This study reports the first-ever experimental investigation on the punching-shear behavior of precast concrete tunnel segments with glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars as flexural reinforcement and GFRP stirrups as shear reinforcement. Two full-scale PCTL specimens reinforced with the same longitudinal and transverse ratios were fabricated and tested under point loads until failure. A rhomboidal-shaped segment measuring 2100 mm in length and 1500 mm in width with a thickness of 250 mm was used in the experimental program. One of both segments had shear reinforcement using a new arrangement technique to assess its contribution to punching capacity. The results are reported and discussed in terms of general behavior, cracking pattern, reinforcement strains, and mode of failure. The experimental results revealed that both segments exhibited final punching-shear failure with no signs of concrete crushing and a similar crack pattern. However, the segment with shear reinforcement had a higher cracking load, stiffness, and punching capacity. These results indicate that using stirrups in GFRP-reinforced PCTL segments represents a realistic solution for the structural integrity of tunnels where initial cracking and ultimate capacity are the governing criteria.

To research the effect of building a sediment interception and drainage system on reducing sediment accumulation in the lower reservoir of Hunyuan Pumped Storage Power Station, a physical model of the lower reservoir of Hunyuan Pumped Storage Power Station was established. In response to the lack of measured hydrological data, after multiple analogies and analyses, the water sediment relationship of the nearby Jiazhuang hydrological station in the watershed was adopted as the inlet water sediment relationship of the model. The experiment set up two operating conditions, one with a dam and the other without a dam. The experiment set up two working conditions, with and without dams, and conducted experimental research on 5 types of non-standard frequency floods, including 30 years, 40 years, 50 years, 80 years, and 100 years. The results showed that during each non-standard frequency flood process, the sediment concentration and suspended sediment particle size distribution along the way in the reservoir area with dam, as well as the sediment concentration and sediment particle size through the machine, were much smaller than those without dam;After exceeding the standard frequency of floods, the sedimentation thickness, sedimentation amount, dead storage capacity, and effective storage capacity loss of the lower reservoir are also smaller than those without dam. The sand prevention effect of this sand retention and drainage system is very obvious. Therefore, it is necessary to build a sand retention and drainage system for the Hunyuan pumped storage power station.
