Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications (AI/ML) provide unique opportunities for documentation, assessment and protection of world cultural heritage, at risk from natural disasters such as earthquakes, climate change, uncontrolled urbanization, etc. Some examples include the deep knowledge bases of churches/mosques damaged in the earthquakes in Italy in 2016, Mexico 2017, Morocco 2023 and Tukey/Syria 2023. Ontology development provides a unifying view of this data and is crucial for effectively applying deep learning techniques to document and manage heritage structures information. A well-designed ontology serves as a structured knowledge graph that facilitates data integration, search, and analysis. Key aspects of ontology development for heritage structure documentation include Ontology Design to ensure the ontology is generic enough to be applicable across diverse heritage assets, Integration of fragmented data from various sources enabling efficient data acquisition and storage, Deep Learning Applications employing the ontology to support deep learning algorithms for semantic segmentation of point cloud data, automated generation of heritage building information models (HBIM) among others, and Knowledge Completion, through models to predict missing information and enhance the quality of the knowledge graphs. Combining ontology development with deep learning techniques, improves heritage structure documentation significantly in terms of accessibility, interpretation, collaboration, and preservation.

Granular roads in Iowa are essential for transporting agricultural goods and providing access to isolated regions such as those containing rural homes. Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure the safety and comfort of all types of vehicles, including heavy farm and quarry trucks, as well as local residents' cars. Strength and stability of a road's aggregate layer are critical to the overall performance and longevity of granular roads. This study seeks to evaluate the performance of different chemical stabilizers for improving aggregate layer strength. Limestone, the primary aggregate utilized in Iowa was used in the study, and three proprietary chemical stabilizers were tested, including two ionic-based stabilizers and a single enzyme-based stabilizer. Laboratory-based California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testswere used to measure the strength. The optimized subgrade soil fraction that provided the highest CBR value was found to lie between 6 and 8%. The data were analyzed using a two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test that showed that the number of curing days, the type of chemical, and their interaction played a significant role in the CBR value of aggregate materials. Overall, this study highlights the importance of chemical stabilizers in improving the strength of granular roads in Iowa and provides valuable insights with respect to road maintenance and construction.

This in-depth overview explores the novel utilisation of waste plastic in construction materials and infrastructures focusing on roadways and concrete. The study includes a variety of investigations carried out over the previous few years, each of which adds insightful information about the environmentally friendly integration of plastic waste. Researchers have looked into a number of approaches, including using plastic waste in concrete or asphalt mixtures in place of conventional materials like bitumen, coarse aggregates, and fine aggregates. Plastic waste has possible advantages like greater workability, decreased shrinkage from plastic and drying, improved abrasion resistance, and cost savings, but it also has disadvantages like weaker compressive and tensile strengths.

The technological development in the AEC sector is also radically influencing the area of cultural heritage. The processes of digitisation of the historical architecture are giving great pulse to projects aimed at physical and cultural accessibility, conservation, tourist attractiveness, dissemination and scientific research with positive effects in terms of enhancement and visibility. 3D survey, H-BIM and Scan-to-BIM processes, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence applications are contributing to a methodological and design approach revolution referred to CH. This paper shows a workflow related to the analysis of the degradation of ancient surfaces and its digital transposition on parametric models through the semi-automatic segmentation of HR images. The goal is to provide a useful workflow for populating ultra-specialized information in BIM environment for maintenance and restoration activities. The process is based on the following steps: laser scanning and photogrammetric survey of the object of analysis;Scan-to-BIM modeling;high resolution orthoimage editing of degraded surfaces;training of ML algorithms for automatic recognition of some degradation phenomena;production of info-graphic output of significant degradation;redaction of maintenance plan with related specialist attachments;integration of the results in BIM environment. The case study is a part of the western fortifications of the Aragonese Castle of Ischia;these protect Piazza d'Armi, are overlooking the sea and incessantly subjected to the corrosive actions of the wind, salt and rain. The object has been identified for its intrinsic inaccessibility and the consequent difficulties to intervene with traditional survey and analysis of degradation approaches.

In modern construction projects, professionals like architects, engineers, contractors (AEC), and owners who are actively involved in projects use various technologies and related software for communication, coordination, and project execution. These include Building Information Modeling (BIM), mobile technologies, camera technologies, drones, robotics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) among others. These technologies are making a significant impact in the construction industry. However, we do not fully understand the extent and focus of their impact yet. This study investigates how these modern construction technologies affect the activities of the construction industry supported with bibliometric network mapping findings. The study used VOSviewer to analyze the bibliometric data and a critical review of shortlisted papers was conducted. The bibliometric analysis reveals the most contributing document source, co-citation of authors, and co-occurring keyword network mapping. The study findings highlight the current emerging technologies and their significant area of application in the construction industry. It was found that recently virtual reality family, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), robotics in construction, machine learning (ML)/AI, and BIM are the most researched technologies impacting the construction industry. The practical implications extend to enhancing technology acceptance, implementation, and understanding within the AEC industry, fostering global awareness and knowledge for stakeholders and future researchers.

A plenitude of digital twin reviews have been published in recent years, most of which, however, solely review project-specific digital twin implementations or focus on specific application areas within civil engineering. Despite the widespread adoption of digital twin applications in recent years in civil engineering, there is a lack of agreement on a common definition of digital twins. A common definition and, furthermore, an understanding of digital twin architectures and the composition of the internal elements would advance digital twin implementations, enhancing the reliability and performance of digital twins. In this study, a multi-vocal review of digital twins in civil engineering is conducted, aiming to provide a scientific basis for reaching a consensus on the abstract architecture and the composition of the internal elements of digital twins. Methodologically, the review is conducted in a twofold manner, accounting for both peer-reviewed, indexed literature, as well as for material that may report on research and development projects and industrial applications not indexed in well-accepted citation databases. The main contribution of this study is a systematic overview of existing architectures of digital twins implemented in civil engineering, including the internal elements. Furthermore, a digital twin definition and a generic reference architecture are proposed. It is expected that the definition and the reference architecture will serve as blueprints for digital twin implementations in civil engineering, providing a common understanding and enhancing the reliability and performance of digital twins.

The road network in many countries holds significant value, and the amount will continue to grow due to the rapid growth of cities and populations. Given this, it is crucial to improve knowledge of the existing road assets, based on which effective management strategies can be customized to maximize the useful service life of current road assets. A key aspect in achieving this goal is the employment of performance modelling, which forecasts future pavement performance. In recent years, the increasing popularity of data-driven approaches has propelled the development of advanced pavement performance models. In this paper, existing data-driven performance models developed globally for different types of pavements and various climate and environmental conditions are first summarized. The review on data-driven performance models then focuses on the capabilities of these models: (i) in handling the time-dependent nature of the data involved, and (ii) in utilizing the existing information available to engineers to forecast future pavement conditions. The objective of this review is to highlight the current state-of-the-art and challenges in data-driven performance modelling and conclude with potential directions and insights for driving innovation and research in the roads sector for practical applications.

As wind farms age, owners encounter pivotal decisions about either extending the operational lifespan of their facilities or pursuing complete decommissioning and repowering. Apart from the commercial factors guiding these choices, technical considerations must be assessed to gauge the risks associated with the continued operation of an aging fleet. In the context of onshore wind turbines, reinforced concrete shallow foundations stand as crucial components. Typically designed for a 20-year lifespan, there exists a pressing need to extend the life of foundations installed over 15 years ago. Both foundations and other structural turbine components endure cyclic fatigue loads. The utilization of fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) presents enhanced competitiveness by reducing the need for traditional reinforcement, expediting construction, and delivering sustainability benefits. Furthermore, incorporating fibres can enhance fatigue behaviour, thereby positively impacting the service life of the foundation. This paper presents a preliminary numerical investigation into the influence of added fibres on the fatigue behaviour of wind tower foundations. The fatigue performance of the FRC foundation is compared with the standard behaviour of a conventional reinforced concrete foundation.

Despite intensive inquiries efforts, safety standards, and guidelines, construction hazards are a significant worldwide concern continuing to plague jobsites. Tragically, the industry continues to see fatalities and serious injuries. This problem has stemmed a targeted research effort with intent to fill knowledge gaps and improve worker safety, especially during the most hazardous activities. A thorough questionnaire on safety hazards was conducted and it was distributed to construction and civil engineering students, superintendents, safety experts, project managers in six different states from south-east United States. Questionnaire was made available through Qualtrics platform in an effort to identify underlying hazards which emerge during the pre-construction stages but remain unidentified until project completion. The findings aim to identify hazards that have avoided identification by using an integrated approach which includes case studies, quantitative/qualitative assessments. General electrical, mechanical equipment, roofing installations, and concrete works are the main areas of inquiry throughout research. To examine the association between independent variables like hazard recognition and dependent variables like safety training and technical competency researchers used statistical analysis, notably the chi-square test. This statistical method was essential for validating the study's hypotheses. The findings of this exploration have potential for companies looking to improve their safety procedures. Researchers also assumed the significance of emphasizing incident causation as well as the crucial need of thorough hazard recognition and its risk perception. This research aims to improve safety procedures in the specified construction operations by integrating 3D BIM and VR technology to not only uncover hidden threats but clearly identify hazards. Heat waves continually intensify due to climate change, putting school children's health and well-being at risk as they spend more time in warm environments. A field study was conducted to investigate the thermal comfort and CO2 concentration in three secondary schools in Malaysia. Field measurements in four classrooms at each school were carried out during the school day to collect environmental variables and simultaneously, questionnaires were distributed twice. 435 data sets were obtained from 232 students aged 13 to 16. The result showed that the comfort operative temperature for the school classroom was 28.7 degrees C. About 78% of students reported feeling comfortable and preferred no change, with more than 90% acceptability. Most students prefer a bit warmer than much cooler conditions. Due to thicker clothing insulation, female students were found to be more sensitive to high temperatures than male students. When comparing the comfort temperature range with the ASHRAE 55 and EN15251 adaptive standards, more points lie outside the comfort band, which indicates that students of hot-humid climates are more tolerant to high temperatures. Results on indoor CO2 concentration showed that all classrooms had good indoor air quality as the average concentration was below 700 ppm, affected by occupancy and ventilation conditions. The findings can supplement existing thermal comfort standards tailored to the local climate and provide the baseline for future school design that encompasses comfort and energy savings.
