According to global accident statistics, construction sites remain the most dangerous of all sectors, with falls from heights being the leading cause of accidents. Current construction safety plans for toolbox meetings to prevent falls rely on paper-based 2D drawings and schedules to instruct workers, comprehend the need for safety equipment installation on a job site, and then mandating regular physical visits for safety plan implementation. Therefore, this paper presents a framework developed to provide a decision support system for a toolbox meeting pertaining to roofing activities in construction. The framework includes three modules: (1) accident data classification (ADC) module, (2) 4D-BIM-based safety information modeling (SIM) module, and (3) model discrepancies detection (MDD) module. The ADC module is used to compute the probability of accidents in roofing activities from historical accident dataset. The 4D-BIM-based SIM module integrates the extracted data of ADC module with 3D-BIM, construction activities, and schedule. The MDD module compares as-is and as-built model of safety guardrails to detect discrepancies with the planned model. The proposed system aids safety managers by extracting specific 4D-BIM-based activities for a given day and predicting associated hazards using historical accident data from the OSHA database. It also incorporates input from the actual job site through an as-built model generated from a point cloud, enabling the identification of changes and discrepancies in the real site before conducting a toolbox meeting. The findings of this study are expected to give important information to support safety manager in comparing the actual job site with the safety plans and provide significant and actual information for a toolbox meeting which could not be assessed with the 2D drawings.

Nearly 30% of all surface soils in Australia can be classified as expansive. These soils shrink or swell due to changes in moisture content between dry and wet seasons and result in ground movement. Such movements can apply substantial additional stresses to shallow-depth structures like pavements, lightweight buildings, pipelines and other underground utilities. The situation is expected to worsen due to climate change. To ensure structures designed today last their design life and to develop climate-resilient infrastructure, it is important to understand the interactions at the soil-vegetation-atmospheric boundary and how they contribute to ground movement. Numerical simulations can be very effective tools in such situations. This paper discusses an approach for modelling the soil-atmosphere-vegetation interaction and some related challenges. Interactions at an instrumented research site in South Australia were modelled under current and future climate scenarios (years 2050 and 2090). The observations from and limitations of the modelling strategy are highlighted.

Investigating the complexity of a historical urban context, the evolution of its forms and the role of its tangible and intangible heritage requires an analysis of the architectural, artistic and constructional events strongly linked to cultural, social and environmental dynamics. This study proposes a key that considers the relationship between the built environmental and water resources, to recognize the evolutionary phases of the urban environment and the role of the historical hydraulic heritage in the current contemporary context, through the architectural vicissitude of an artefact symbolic of the complex city-patrimony-water relationship in the city of Salerno: the eighteenth-century don Tullio's fountain. The paper focuses on the role of water-related works and highlights the strategic importance of the conservation and recovery of hydraulic architectures in the context of sustainable development, promoting a holistic approach that integrates environmental, historical and social aspects. Using the city of Salerno as a case study, the paper analyses fountains as examples of engineering and architectural works that bear witness to the history and culture of a place and proposes strategies for their enhancement and protection.

River management faces environmental and social changes;therefore, applying information and communication technologies in the construction domain is required. Since most of the data collected and stored during the operation and maintenance of rivers is machine-unreadable, much effort and time are required to find and retrieve the necessary information and to associate the static data of facilities with digital real-time data. Digital twins are expected to increase infrastructure management efficiency and quality;however, applying digital twins to river management is difficult because most of the data are machine-unreadable. Therefore, accumulating machine-readable data and associating static data with dynamic data are required. To meet the requirement, this study proposed a product model of the river domain (referred to as the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) River) and data flow for static and real-time data. This study broke down the elements of rivers into spatial and physical elements and developed classes for the IFC River. The IFC River includes rivers, river channels, and facilities for river management. The structure of the IFC River follows that of other domains of the IFC so that the IFC River can describe complex fields that include multiple domains. As Rivers consist of linear structures (e.g., river channels, levees) and complex structures (e.g., sluices, hydraulic gates), IFC River describes the shape of linear structures using IFC Road, an IFC schema for the road domain. Besides, the data described by the IFC River are static, whereas the digital twin utilizes dynamic real-time data. This study also proposed a data flow that uses a game engine, 3D modeling software, libraries for handling IFC, and NoSQL to realize the digital twins, which contain shapes, properties, and real-time data. IFC River and the data flow this study developed could describe the rivers, the river management facilities, and real-time data as machine-readable data.

As China's high-speed railway network expands, the probability of highspeed rail trains passing each other increases. Vibrations from passing double-track trains on the track and foundation should not be neglected. Based on the 2.5-dimensional finite element theory of saturated ground, a model of train-double track-foundation was established. Considering the vibration excitation caused by track irregularity, the Fourier transform derived the expression of train load in the frequency-wavenumber domain. A FORTRAN calculation program was compiled to assay the vibration properties of saturated foundations under four meeting conditions, and the amplitude amplification factor of the subgrade surface was proposed. The results demonstrate that compared with the single-track train, the track center's vertical acceleration amplitude and vertical displacement amplitude significantly increase when the double-track trains meet.

The paper is based on three report submissions made by the author to the NSW State Government Parliamentary Inquiry in 2021 into the Sydney Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) and Beaches Link Tunnel (BLT) URL (Inquiry into impact of the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link-Sub 437 (2021) [1];Inquiry into impact of the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link-Sub 437a (2021) [2];Inquiry into impact of the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link-Sub 437b (2021) [3]). The WHT includes twin 16-m diameter TBM bored tunnels under Sydney Harbour as opposed to the original immersed tube proposal. The BLT was politically pushed, had initially been delayed but has now recently been cancelled with the change in state government in 2023. No Business Case for the BLT bored tunnel was publicly available. Major construction works are currently well advanced in and adjacent to the Warringah Expressway in North Sydney. The author's submission proposed an extension of the WHT to go under North Sydney and beyond Chatswood (extending the WHT tunnel by at least 5km north, following the Pacific Highway corridor) and for a new 7km long east-west tunnel from the Roseville Bridge, Forestville to Macquarie Park passing under Chatswood, to replace the BLT. As part of this proposal a major underground interchange, conceptually similar, but less complex than the Westconnex Rozelle Interchange on the south side of the harbour, would be constructed under Chatswood. It is acknowledged that the financial viability of Westconnex depends on the completion of the WHT. Some concept images of the proposals are included together with the advantages over the current WHT alignment and the now cancelled BLT project. Other planning issues include a lack of redundancy in the road network leading to accident-related significant traffic delays, ventilation stack air pollution issues, community impacts, construction programmes and costs.

Recognizing the activities of construction workers is crucial for enhancing productivity. Traditionally, analyzing worker activities on construction sites often rely on manual supervision, which can pose challenges for project managers due to the potential inaccuracies in the recorded data. This paper presents a system for recognizing the activities of construction workers and automatically calculating their effective work hours. Firstly, after identifying workers' activity (e.g., bricklaying) as the subject of study in construction industry, Mediapipe as a vision-based framework to detect human activities is used to track the joints of construction workers and convert this information into coordinate data. In this process, the number of frames corresponding to each action in the video is recorded to obtain data related to the duration of each activity automatically. Secondly, an LSTM model is used to process videos and classify construction activities. And a dataset which concludes the segmented videos of construction activities is developed to train the LSTM model. Finally, an evaluation system for worker efficiency concluding the Mediapipe and the LSTM model can be used to count workers' effective hours automatically. The effectiveness of each activity is determined based on its classification. The test accuracy of the system is 82.23%. The established system facilitates the extraction of information regarding categories and durations of construction activities, which offers significant assistance in enhancing construction productivity.

The research aimed at moisture buffering of clay plasters modified with organic materials. The tests involved conditioning plaster samples in variable humidity conditions and weighing them to determine the sorption capacity and release of moisture into the environment. Clay plasters examined in this study showed that unmodified plasters have the highest sorption capacity shortly after their installation. Almost two years after their manufacturing and storage in conditions similar to real ones, modification with 1% organic fiber mass content increases their ability to absorb and release moisture to the environment. At this stage of research, it cannot be clearly stated which modification brings the most benefits. Among those tested, samples modified with wood wool had the lowest sorption. It is worth noting that the CF modification resulted in the structural durability of the plaster samples.

The Cone Penetrometer Test (CPT) is themost commonly used in-situ test to evaluate liquefaction potential using empirical correlations developed over the last 50 years using case histories involving very young soil deposits. Recent studies have shown that factors like aging and bonding can increase soil liquefaction resistance through the contribution of soilmicrostructure. Paired cone penetrometer data (CPT) testing combined with shear wave velocity (V-s) testing (e.g. sCPT) can be used to derive a strength gain factor which evaluates the contribution of soil microstructure to liquefaction resistance. Additionally, correlations between the soil behaviour type index, I-c, calculated using CPT, and laboratory-derived plasticity index values are shown to have an effect on a soil's susceptibility to liquefaction for young (non-aged) sands. This paper compares two methods to derive the strength gain factor for aged soil through measured to estimated shear wave velocities from seismic CPT data, with consideration of incorporating the soil behaviour type index, I-c. Paired testing results and laboratory data are reviewed to further refine the soil behaviour type index (I-c) cut-off values for aged soils in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.

In the past two decades, flooding has been the most frequent natural disaster that has happened all over the world, accounting for more than 40% of all disasters that have occurred. This is the same story in the Philippines, bringing devastating damages from agriculture to infrastructure. Socio-economic damage is evident, which not only hinders the advancement in development but can also bring trauma and stress to the community. Due to this, the government is constantly providing mitigating measures to counter the effects of flooding and the flood itself. This includes the construction of different flood control projects all over the country. However, the cost of such projects cannot be simply estimated. This study aims to forecast the construction cost of flood control projects based on maximum flood level susceptibility, precipitation, and bearing capacity. A hybrid ANN-PSO was utilized as the prediction model to render the most optimal and reliable solution. With the aid of Garson's algorithm, a sensitivity analysis was also conducted to level the weight importance of each variable in the network. Accordingly, the network demonstrated excellent performance, achieving a regression value of 0.99725. The MSE and MAPE, on the other hand, generated highly accurate predictions when compared to other models.
