The construction industry faces numerous safety challenges. Effective safety training is critical to reducing workplace accidents and injuries. However, despite the mandatory implementation of safety standards and regulations, traditional safety training methods are inadequate in effectively preparing workers to build safely. With the advent of virtual reality and metaverse technology, this study aims to transform the traditional instruction-based construction safety training into an immersive, interactive, and engaging learning experience through a game. Participants are placed in simulated construction scenarios where they are tasked to identify and respond to potential hazards. As a pilot study, this work developed the Construction Guardian, which simulated the fall hazard in a real construction project by utilizing Unreal Engine 5 Datasmith plugin with the Building Information Model (BIM) in Navisworks. Engaging the participants in a virtualized recreation of the real-life project enhances their sense of situational awareness, allowing participants to immerse themselves in realistic scenarios before stepping onto the actual job site, while also monitoring the training performance of each participant.

This paper discusses four simple steps for producing angular-shaped fly ash aggregate. The process is quick and cost-effective and involves mixing, compaction, curing and crushing. The paper compares the engineering properties of the resulting aggregate with those of conventional stone aggregates. Previous processes for producing aggregates using fly ash have been developed but are very costly and time-consuming, limiting their use in civil engineering applications. After various trials, mixes of 96-98% class C fly ash with 2-4% binder and 85-88% class F fly ash with 12-15% binder were found suitable to produce lightweight fly ash aggregate with dense structures and angular shapes for better interlocking, excellent toughness, hardness and high durability. This fly ash aggregate meets the specifications of MORTH (2013) and IS 383 (2016) for road aggregate and structural concrete aggregate, respectively. Tests show that fly ash aggregate can be used in concrete work without compromising its strength, and the resulting concrete is lightweight. Finally, the financial analysis for setting up a pilot plant for manufacturing angular-shaped fly ash aggregate is presented, showing that the production cost of fly ash aggregate is significantly lower than that of natural stone aggregate.

The present paper focuses on the Politeama Verdi Theater in Carrara, a majestic example of the Antonelliana school designed by Leandro Caselli in the last decades of the 19th century. Recently, the building has suffered severe structural damage, mainly due to the modifications it has undergone over time and absence of correct maintenance. This study aims at providing some considerations about the structural principles according to which this building, but also many similar Italian constructions of the same period, was conceived. Besides a general description of the building and the description of the main structural damage it has suffered, an assessment of the stress rates of some structural elements under static loads is provided, proving that a very careful approach should have been adopted in the modification of the building for preserving such iconic construction.

In Canada, about 45% of bridges reached their life expectancy and the overall budget for maintenance and rehabilitation only covers about 59% of the estimated required cost. It is likely that many of the bridges classified as "fair" will reach a poor condition before being upgraded. This represents an enormous financial burden that faces Canada in the near future. In addition, recent natural and man-made disasters in Canada and around the world have further highlighted the difficulty that affected communities faced to recover socially and economically from these unexpected shocks. Many researchers convey that floods can be considered one of the principal reasons for bridge failure in Canada and the rest of the world. Under these circumstances, this study aims to study economic losses due to floods in Manitoba. Historic records about flood economic consequences have been collected from the CatIQ platform. These costs per square kilometers have been quantified in Manitoba as well as in nearby areas prone to these events. The application of this approach can help decision-makers and code-writers to develop probabilistic risk-based models to quantify the risk of highway bridge failure due to floods for design and evaluation purposes.

The Bletchley Flyover is a part of East West Rail Phase 2 and it allows the East West Rail lines to cross over the West Coast Main Line (WCML) and three roads in Bletchley. During the Phase 2 works, the spans over the WCML had to be reconstructed since the existing viaduct structure had failed the assessment. However, constructing a newspan across the WCML was challenging due to various constraints such as the presence of adjacent properties, land boundaries, overhead electrification, and the difficulty of working around the West Coast Main Line without causing disruption. Moreover, designing the foundation for the new span bridge was also challenging since it had to accommodate the existing viaduct foundations consisting of shallow under-reamed piles within the footprint of the new linear foundation for the abutments. Assessing the existing foundation for the new loads in accordance with the current standard and designing a skewed bridge abutment foundation of approximately 90 m in length in REPUTE, which considers the pile cap to be an infinitely rigid structure were also significant design challenges. Additionally, there was little historical information available for the existing foundations, making it harder to design the foundation for the new span bridge. Cross hole seismic testing was carried out as part of the design to determine the size of existing under-reamed piles.

Shear failures under seismic loads often represent a paramount issue in pre-code and low-code Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings. In these structures, beam-column joints generally totally miss stirrups, and beams or columns often have a minimum amount of transverse reinforcement, according to obsolete technical or seismic codes in force in Italy before '90s. A number of strengthening techniques exist in the literature and in common practice to solve such critical failure typologies. This work is focused on the experimental assessment of the effectiveness of one of these techniques, which relies on pre-stressed stainless steel strips (CAM (R) technology), applied on beams/columns or joints to improve shear strength and displacement capacity without change lateral stiffness. Pseudo-static tests have been performed at the University of Naples Federico II on shear critical columns and unreinforced joints with and without strengthening. Experimental results are described and global responses compared to prove the effectiveness of the investigated technique.

Air conditioning systems in buildings account for a substantial portion of total energy consumption, primarily relying on mechanical vapor compression systems. Recently, evaporative cooling has garnered interest in the scientific community due to advancements in the Maisotsenko cycle (M-cycle), which offers improved performance compared to conventional indirect evaporative cooling for thermal control in various environments. However, the M-cycle alone may not be suitable for all climatic conditions, particularly in high relative humidity environments. To address this limitation, this study proposes a hybrid VCR/M-cycle cooling system designed to achieve thermal comfort across different climatic conditions while minimizing energy consumption. The hybrid system integrates an M-cycle heat and mass exchanger with a VCR. This research investigates the performance of two potential hybrid configurations of these cooling systems and compares them to the performance of each system used individually. The results indicate that implementing a hybrid VCR/M-cycle system can effectively dissipate heat gains while significantly reducing electrical consumption.

The design of the layout of logistics spaces represents a fundamental step for the organization and rationalization of industrial production procedures according to an approach that also places sustainability and resilience at the centre of interests within the context of a human-centric approach of the so-called Industry 5.0. The optimization of warehouse flows is strictly connected to the optimal use of space, necessary to guarantee the reduction of operational phases, ease of access and control, and the best efficiency and usability of the spaces. The research work presented in this article aims to define a generally applicable methodology for the design and adaptation of industrial plants, with particular reference to systems intended for warehouse logistics processes. The design guidelines that we want to define will integrate the spatial needs related to practice and business activity with the new research directions that look at digital innovation of companies and energy efficiency. Central to these assumptions is the definition of the structure of the layouts which can determine different performances for the same activities, as they transversally influence multiple aspects such as the health and well-being of workers, the management of spaces, times, energy consumption. The topics covered are the result of an initial research activity carried out at the Solis GreenLog S.r.l. logistics centre, a hub of the Solis S.p.A. group, an integrated temperature-controlled transit point that offers spaces and services for storage, processing, handling and distribution of the goods.

The building decarbonization challenge, demanding increasing energy efficiency while ensuring occupant wellbeing, requires to intelligently control building systems. The direct and indirect, by means of measurements and simulation, evaluation of Indoor Environmental Quality could aid operational decisions. This can be done with physical measurements in field with lab-grade data acquisition systems (DAQs) with high accuracy, or with low-cost non-intrusive IoT sensors, which may sacrifice the measurement accuracy. Also, incorporating comfort simulation models can increase spatial and time resolution while reducing costs and invasiveness. This study investigates how different DAQs accuracies and data availability affect the evaluation of thermal comfort in: i) real time monitoring;ii) long-term evaluation. Moreover it is evaluated whether the introduction of numerical models might compensate for data unavailability. The study involved a 30-day experimental campaign in a South-West oriented enclosed office equipped with advanced envelope components and an extensive measurement infrastructure. Thermal comfort was investigated in a short- and long-term evaluation, showing how using non-intrusive sensors integrated with numerical models could lead to a deviation of less than 5% from the reference for Operative temperature and summer PMV estimation.

With the availability of numerical modelling techniques, engineers and researchers can simulate and assess structures without the costly and laborious constraints of experimental studies. The finite element method (FEM) is a well-known and widely used modelling technique to simulate structures. In contrast, the applied element method (AEM) is a more recent technique, but is very promising in simulating extreme loading events on structures, such as earthquakes. The objective of this study is to compare both modelling approaches and the validation results of each technique by modelling two fully grouted reinforced masonry shear walls (RMSWs). SeismoStruct and Extreme Loading for Structures (ELS) are the selected software to apply the FEM and AEM, respectively. The results of each model were plotted against experimental results from the literature. Each modelling technique was able to capture the lateral cyclic performance of the fully grouted RMSWs. However, the SeismoStruct model required a significantly lower runtime compared to that of the ELS models. It was found that for fully grouted RMSWs, the FEM in SeismoStruct is the preferable modelling technique. However, this conclusion does not apply to other types of masonry walls such as partially grouted RMSWs, where SeismoStruct falls short in providing modelling tools to simulate them. Contrarily, ELS provides more flexibility for modelling in terms of element and material models. Furthermore, due to the idea of continuum mechanics in the FEM, the AEM is preferable when simulating a collapse. Modelling the separation of elements is more challenging in the FEM, whereas, in the AEM, elements are easily separated and can collide with the ground.
