Roman architecture is one of the most advanced forms of historical architectures because of the several innovations that have contributed to the progress of the art of construction. The ability of the Romans consisted in creating monumental architectures by experimenting with innovative materials and construction techniques, and combining traditional building elements in an effective way, thus achieving formal and technological solutions of great relevance. Therefore, research activities on Roman buildings are essential for the reconstruction of their historical development, and for their protection, conservation and promotion, with the aim to preserve the cultural memory of the ancient cities. In this framework, this paper reports the preliminary results of an ongoing research activity on the Roman thermal complex "Terme della Rotonda" in the city of Catania. This activity aims at achieving a three-dimensional digital model of the thermal complex and characterizing it at architectural and construction level to provide information on the mutual connections between the architectural solutions and the adopted materials and construction techniques. The study here reported is part of the interdisciplinary research project SAMOTHRACE that aims at bridging the knowledge gap on the dating and diachronic development of the thermal complex.

The climate-responsive features of traditional Chinese vernacular residences are deeply intertwined with aesthetics, culture, traditions, regional characteristics, lifestyle, and residents' behaviors. These aspects, influenced by cli-mate responsiveness but extending beyond mere physical comfort, are de-fined as coincidental values in this paper. While focusing solely on physical comfort and energy savings may lead to monotonous designs and a loss of regional identity, research into coincidental values fosters better integration of function and form, strengthens socio-cultural connections, and enhances the diversity and uniqueness of regional characteristics. In this paper, we identify four key elements to unfold the creation of coincidental values: the local climate characteristics that the residences respond to, the coincidental effects resulting from these climate influences, the building components used for climate response, and the operations applied to these components for climate adaptivity. We extracted and classified these four elements from a total of 250 vernacular residence cases across China, regardless of region. The relationships among these four elements are analyzed and discussed to form a series of typologies and to clarify the mechanisms behind the creation of coincidental values in vernacular residences. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the climate-responsive features in traditional Chinese vernacular residences and provide insights for improved green building design and sustainable rural construction in China.

The Temple of Diana in Baiae exemplifies ancient masonry dome construction, with a unique ogival profile partially built in opus caementicium. This paper investigates its structural vulnerabilities using two analytical approaches: Thrust Network Analysis (TNA) and Finite Element Methods (FEM). While TNA is efficient for structures with distinct masonry blocks, it struggles with Roman concrete's continuous casting. FEM, effective for continuous systems, is influenced by boundary conditions like settlements. A comparative analysis highlights the strengths and limitations of both methods, emphasizing their complementary roles in structural assessment.

This paper focuses on the working and mechanical properties of UHPC under the conditions of different binder sand ratios. Mercury-in-pressure (MIP) was used to characterize the effect of different binder sand ratios on the pore structure evolution of UHPC hydrated slurry, and the types of hydration products and microstructure change rules in the slurry were analyzed with the help of thermal analysis (TG-DTG) and SEM. The results showed that the extensibility of UHPC decreased with the increase of the binder-sand ratio(0.9-1.2), and when the binder sand ratio was 1.1, the mix flowed relatively well and had the best mechanical properties at all ages. With the increase of the rubber-sand ratio, the flow index of the mix is getting larger and larger, and the hydrated slurry all shows the trend of slurry thickening. When the binder-sand ratio is 1.0 and 1.1, the hydration process of the slurry is faster, the generation of hydration products is high, there are more gelling pores and mesopores, relatively few macropores, and the slurry densification is higher, resulting in the best mechanical properties of the hardened slurry, especially when the binder-sand ratio is 1.1.

The monitoring of a construction site is crucial to verify the progress and control its alignment with the defined project schedule phases. An efficient site monitoring ensures there are no delays that could result in losses in terms of efficiency, time, and costs. This study aims to propose an approach to optimize construction site monitoring with BIM models and the comparison between point clouds. The primary goal is to provide a framework for evaluating the progress of construction activities, thereby enhancing the overall project management. The approach is based on comparing point clouds from on-site acquired images and point clouds from BIM models corresponding to the phases defined in the project schedule. The comparison is achieved in terms of distances between points in two different clouds. Specifically, point clouds corresponding to identical and subsequent phases are compared to assess whether the construction site is behind or on schedule. This provides an effective tool for verifying the progress of activities. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through its application to a specific case study involving a three-story reinforced concrete building with a project schedule divided into incremental phases. The comparison between point clouds extracted from on-site images and those generated by a representative BIM model of the building's construction program affords an automatic analysis of work progress.

Architectural design and construction always reflect the conformity with technical standards regarding specific technologies, which makes their knowledge highly relevant for comprehending the evolution of the building's arrangement and appearance over time. In this perspective, the use of metal construction in Italy is a unique instance as it was characterized for a considerable period during the twentieth century by the lack of mandatory technical regulations. Indeed, the first law that established compulsory procedures for the structural calculation of steel frames was only introduced in the Seventies. This framework, largely due to the backwardness of the national steel industry and the lack of affirmation of metal structures in the building sector, gave to designers the possibility to choose different operational addresses for structural verifications and also to follow provisions developed by foreign experts and regulations. The understanding of the evolution of technical standards is not only crucial for elucidating all the elements of an old architectural design, but it's also relevant today, especially for building circularity, for which it's crucial to know the features and procedures applied to structural components of the past, to know how they could be reused and to unleash all their current potential. The article examines the development of national technical guidelines for the use of iron and steel in construction and identifies critical issues regarding steel classification and structural calculation procedures in the twentieth century.

In the context of a European project aimed at developing, upscaling, and testing innovations in building envelope materials and technical systems to reach Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) balance, a novel advanced glazing component was conceived to improve energy efficiency while ensuring occupant comfort in terms of thermal comfort and indoor air quality. The aim of this work is to present preliminary results from the experimental characterisation of this technology carried out on a full scale prototype in a South oriented facade of an outdoor test facility. The experimental characterisation presents first results for winter season, in terms of single component and whole system performance. To this sake both conventional performance metrics (i.e. U-value, g-value) and more advanced metrics considering the dynamicity of the components operations (i.e. pre-heating and dynamic insulation efficiencies) are taken into account, considering also the effect of the LHEX as compared to more traditional ventilation strategies (i.e. natural ventilation, decentralised heat recovery).

Lean concrete has been used for pavements or footpaths. However, the production of cement generates CO2, and thus to achieve green construction, we need to use less cement or substitute materials for cement. One method to reduce cement usage is to modify the aggregates used for lean concrete so that the bonding between cement and aggregates can be stronger and thus less cement can be used. A Microbial Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) process has been adopted to treat aggregates used for lean concrete. The study shows that the aggregates modified by a MICP treatment could increase the cubic strength by 21.4% at 28 days of curing. Further studies were also carried out to use sea sand rather than river sand for lean concrete. The results also indicate that the strength of lean concrete-made with MICP-treated sea sand was also increased by 24.8% at 28 days of curing when compared to untreated lean concrete made with river sand. This study is meaningful as the supply of river sand is much less than sea sand. On the other hand, sea sand is considered not suitable for lean concrete as chloride in sea sand will weaken the strength of lean concrete. This study appears to have established a method for sea sand to be used for lean concrete for pavements.

The construction industry is currently undergoing a digital transition characterized by an increasing adoption of digital approaches and tools to enhance business processes. Among these approaches are Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Reality (VR). Several research works have demonstrated that the use of BIM models in virtual reality environments can be particularly useful in leveraging the simple and intuitive interaction mechanisms offered by these environments. This can especially support meetings and enable individuals less familiar with BIM software to interact with the models. However, while several research works have been dedicated to this subject, it is still challenging for practitioners to select the best processes for effectively integrating BIM models into VR environments. One reason for this state of affairs is the lack of practical and neutral comparisons that could help them understand the different approaches, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. This is even more true when it comes to immersive virtual reality environments like CAVE systems, which are highly practical for in-person meetings but have much less documentation on BIM integration. The goal of the work presented in this article is to compare two transfer processes based on different tools. Both processes are detailed, including the tools and transfer formats. Then, a comparative analysis is conducted based on a university building project. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of each process are discussed, providing practitioners with objective elements to aid in decision-making.

Massive amounts of construction, renovation, and demolition (CRD) waste are produced from the construction sector. The circularity of the construction is gaining momentum for controlling and reducing the stream and amount of CRD waste. To this end, the deconstruction concept, i.e., a planned disassembly of components and materials of the built facility, has emerged as a more resource-friendly alternative compared to demolition. The transition toward deconstruction requires radical changes in the current practices of the construction industry. To this end, this research assesses the readiness of the Canadian construction industry to adopt deconstruction. The research followed a three-stage methodology that includes Deconstruction in Utopia, Canada Status Quo, and Canada Readiness for Deconstruction Adoption. Deconstruction in Utopia proposes the ideal scenario for the extreme implementation of deconstruction;Canada Status Quo analyzed available data in the context of deconstruction in Canada. Finally, Canada Readiness for Deconstruction Adoption was investigated by analyzing the positive and negative external and internal factors affecting the implementation of deconstruction through strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis. The paper discussed the challenges and barriers to overcome for the transition to deconstruction and highlighted the potential of the National Building Code (NBC) of Canada and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) to support deconstruction. The output of this paper can aid policymakers in setting strategies to boost the implementation of deconstruction as an end-of-life (EoL) scenario.
