Today, Multi-Sensor Networks (MSN) have numerous applications in areas such as facility condition monitoring, disaster management, equipment inspection, and resource management. Structural displacement data are parameters collected from multiple sensors, necessitating a method for accurate and efficient analysis to assess the structural state effectively. This paper presents an analysis of multi-sensor network (MSN) data gathered from marine structures, such as the Offshore Jacket Platform (OJP). The paper aims to determine the structural displacement resulting from environmental impacts by constructing a data-link ridge progression graph of sensor nodes. The authors propose a two-step approach to identify the optimal trajectory progression for ridges. Firstly, the Dijkstra algorithm is employed within a multi-mesh sensor network to establish connections between points and determine the progression path of the building health diagram. Subsequently, a fast-marching algorithm is applied to optimize the path progression into a ridge trajectory, thus creating a health diagram for marine structures. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is demonstrated through its application in two test scenarios, yielding promising initial results.

Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) has found application in demanding structural scenarios requiring exceptional performance, durability, and ductility. The utilization of this material for structural strengthening is increasingly gaining popularity. It allows for the construction of slender, yet ductile elements without significant alterations to the element's dimensions. One of the primary drawbacks of this material is the lack of extensive design codes. Additionally, its high cost is another notable limitation. The present study focuses on the application of UHPFRC for strengthening purposes and aims to investigate its optimal characteristics. In this study, the results from testing large-scale beams strengthened with UHPFRC layers have been used to develop a numerical model capable of predicting the performance of strengthened reinforced concrete beams. This model explores critical material parameters, including layer depth, fiber content, the interface condition, and the use of steel bars in the layers. The results suggest that incorporating additional reinforcing bars into the UHPFRC layers yields superior performance when compared to increasing the depth of the elements or using higher fiber dosages. The interface conditions affect the performance of strengthened elements significantly.

This study investigates the plastic shakedown limit of railroad ballast, a critical parameter for long-term performance under cyclic loading. A series of eight triaxial tests on 150 x 300 mm specimens, replicating particle size distribution according to AREMA No. 4 standards, was conducted. The results reveal a significant dependence of the shakedown limit on both stress ratio and confining stress. Consequently, a confining stress-dependent shakedown limit is proposed. This approach aligns well with findings from PFC2D simulations reported in literature. The established shakedown limit offers a valuable tool for railway pavement designers, enabling them to evaluate material behavior under variable loading scenarios, transcending the limitations of single stress state analysis.

As hydrogen gains attraction as a clean energy medium, the demand for secure and efficient storage solutions becomes crucial. While traditional compressed hydrogen tanks are widely utilized, they face size, safety, and efficiency challenges. This study examines the performance of a hybrid PV-driven system using solid-state hydrogen storage for residential buildings in the North American cities of Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. The hybrid system's effectiveness in storing and utilizing hydrogen is assessed through dynamic simulations, considering various climatic conditions and energy demands of a typical residential dwelling. This study proposes an advanced methodology by incorporating the metal hydride tanks into the TRANSYS simulation platform through the development of a numerical code. The results indicate that Montreal exhibits the highest hydrogen production and grid dependency, requiring approximately 7.1 MWh of energy from the grid. Toronto closely follows, while the Vancouver case shows the lowest grid dependency with approximately 6.68 MWh. It is demonstrated that over half of the annual load is supplied by renewable sources in all cities, achieving a renewable factor of about 60%, which corresponds to the CO2 emissions ranging from 850.7 to 909.5 kg CO2/yr.

Ongoing urbanisation and climate change pose profound challenges for watershed hydrology, exacerbating flood risks and introducing uncertainties to urban stormwater management systems. This study aimed to enhance the understanding and management of a large mixed watershed, the Qinhuai River Catchment, facing intersecting urbanisation and climate change stressors. Hydrological modelling approach was applied to assess and quantify hydrological impacts from changes in catchment characteristics and climate conditions. Results showed land use/land cover changes increased rainfall-runoff conversion in urban areas. Certain rice paddy and dry agricultural land regions exhibited significant runoff generation potential requiring management attention. Consistent correlation between annual precipitation and streamflow highlighted the dominant role of precipitation in controlling runoff dynamics, but the study also identified the influence of temperature on monthly runoff formation. In general, the combined effects of precipitation and temperature played a crucial role in shaping patterns and fluxes of watershed runoff under changing environmental conditions.

In Italy, the marble industry is one of the most productive sectors in terms of quality and quantity of material exported. However, after the economic crisis of 2008 and the COVID19 pandemic, production and export numbers have experienced a significant reduction. This is particularly true for Sicily and the area of Custonaci (Trapani, TP). In this area numerous quarries had to temporarily halt mining operations due to the lack of demand from the market and the reluctance of most entrepreneurs to modify and improve their production lines. Nevertheless, the sector's most pressing issue is the massive quantity of waste generated during cutting and processing. These wastes are left to pile up in the land next to the sawmills, even if, according to the current Italian legislation, they should be moved to dedicated landfills. Unfortunately, this operation rarely happens as its cost is prohibitively high. Moreover, the intensive extraction activity has a massive impact on the landscape. As a result, in the past few years, researchers have started to find alternative use to this by-product in a variety of industries including construction, fashion and agriculture. Marble quarry waste is already widely used in construction to manufacture aggregate for cementitious matrixes as well as artificial stone, where marble waste is used as mineral filler within a polymeric matrix. The new challenge is to combine marble waste with either a bio-based or a recyclable material, in order to reduce the use of virgin materials and to ensure a further reuse. This works proposes an overview of the state of the art in terms of current legislation, patents and products with marble waste and it paves the way to an experimentation with marble waste from Custonaci marble basin (namely Perlato and Perlatino di Sicilia) by mixing it with either a biodegradable polymer (PLA or PVA) or a recyclable polymer such as nylon, coming from dismissed fishing nets.

PC grout is roughly classified into high and low viscosity types. The high viscosity type cannot be pumped over a long distance at once because of the increase in grouting pressure, and the low viscosity type has problem of filling failure due to the flow ahead of the phenomenon on the downslope. Therefore, thixotropic grout materials have been developed to improve the workability and filling properties of PC grout, focusing on the thixotropic properties in which the viscosity changes between when pressurized and when normal. This paper reports the results of confirmation tests conducted for the practical application of thixotropic grout materials. The test was conducted on a mock-up model test simulating the actual PC steel strand arrangement, and a grouting test was performed in the case of using both a pressure pump and vacuum pump, and the case of using only a pressure pump. After the grout hardens, the duct is removed, and the filling status inside is checked. In the test, the pressure of the pressure pump was recorded and compared with high viscosity materials and ultra-low viscosity materials that are currently on the market and are frequently used. At the time of the test the bleeding ratio, expansion ratio, and stability tests were conducted.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology has revolutionized the field of architectural conservation, playing a vital role in the preservation and restoration of heritage sites. The purpose of the research is to develop a broad approach for the application of BIM in horizontal infrastructures in the field of archaeology. An existing heritage stone pavement was digitally parametrically modeled utilizing a BIM-based technique. Each element was transformed from simple graphic entities into intelligent entities using a unique computational design code. In this way, the applied methodology resulted in a dynamic model that updates its information package and modifies the output of the analysis every time the data worksheet is integrated with newly collected results. As a preliminary outcome, a tool is suggested for the potential of virtual restoration, where professionals can virtually reconstruct and perceive a cultural site in its former splendor. The tool includes both graphical and non-graphical information. This will allow for the exploration of alternative restoration approaches and empower decision-makers to make informed choices.

Changes in urban surfaces and materials and decreased green spaces link urbanization to increased outdoor thermal discomfort. Thermal comfort indices can offer valuable insights into how urban design elements, particularly vegetation, influence human thermal perception. This study employs the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) to investigate how urban vegetation, and other surfaces affect outdoor thermal comfort in Milan, Italy. To this purpose, a measurement campaign was conducted during Summer 2023, gathering data to evaluate the UTCI across various urban settings and climate conditions. Specifically, vegetated green spaces (green sites) and spaces dominated by buildings and asphalt (grey sites) were compared. Correlation analyses were then performed to identify the key factors influencing UTCI at each location. The environmental conditions were comparable only on July 17(th) (green) and 19th (grey). On both dates the UTCI was primarily influenced by direct and reflected radiation in the morning. In the afternoon, re-emitted energy from surrounding materials sustained rising trends in air temperature and mean radiant temperature, thereby sustaining increases in UTCI. On July 19th, the thermal stress was higher, correlated with global radiation and mean radiant temperature all day. On July 17th also relative humidity and air temperature showed influence on UTCI.

The Naples Metro Line 1 is an important infrastructural work that extends for approximately 18 km, connecting 19 stations in the city. The project is developed in a particularly complex geological context, characterized mainly by soils and rocks of pyroclastic origin and marine sands. This article focuses on the monitoring of subsidence movements around the stations of Universita and Toledo stations, as it is of particular geotechnical interest due to the dense urban and construction context surrounding it. Traditional monitoring operations carried out through optical leveling between 2002 and 2009, encompass both the underground stations and connecting tunnels. The aim of this study is to compare the data obtained through the remote sensing technique DInSAR (Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry) using measurements from the ENVISAT (2002-2010) sensor, with the results of traditional monitoring. The data from the COSMO-SkyMed constellation, of the Italian Space Agency, are then analyzed to evaluate any posthumous movements that have occurred along the same section since 2010, therefore in the post-construction phases, in order to identify any critical issues that may require further investigation.
