The present and future cities are key players in the ecological and energy transition towards a circular economy thanks to their resource, material and energy potential. The EU-funded ARV project with its six demonstration projects, aims to contribute to speedy and wide scale implementation of climate positive circular communities where people can thrive for generations to come. The intent of the ARV project is to develop and demonstrate a new paradigm of "integrated circular design", by taking a multidisciplinary approach to (re)design buildings maximizing energy efficiency, minimizing life cycle greenhouse gas emissions and costs, optimizing occupant well-being, and ensuring high architectural quality. In Italy, the case study is the Destra Adige Piedicastello area, one of the oldest districts of the city of Trento. It was selected because it has the opportunity to become an incubator and demonstrator of a new way of thinking about local communities, oriented towards climate respect in a circular economy and energy self-sufficiency perspective, and through the development of solutions that can be rapidly replicated and exported to other districts and cities. To this end, it was decided to design an experimental demonstration timber building that systematizes innovative design, construction, and plant engineering solutions for a new culture for positive energy buildings (PEBs). The challenge was addressed employing methods of integrated and participatory design in a multistakeholder cooperation applying the principles of circular economy and focusing mainly on the use of local bio-based materials, the high energy efficiency with active/passive solutions, the effective integration of renewable energy sources and the off-site prefabrication of the building components.

Large transportation projects frequently encounter issues in management of Geotechnical data, including collection, analysis, transfer, accessibility, and version control. These difficulties can lead to inefficiencies, causing cost pressures and impact the ability to communicate project risk in a timely fashion. Historically, the absence of centralized databases and effective data management frameworks bottle neck the engineer's ability to process and interpret geotechnical data effectively. Commonly "dead end's" form in digital data transfer as paper or pdf files are exchanged, leading to time consuming processes for digitising when updating interpretations or utilising the data elsewhere. Consequently, decision-makers and stakeholders risk lacking access to crucial data or relying on outdated geotechnical information. We propose a dynamic, connected workflow that streamlines the data transfer between applications, enhancing communication of project risk from ground conditions. Connecting cloud-based site investigation with interpretation software allows the geo-professionals the confidence to know that the latest data is being used and new data can be easily utilised to update the interpretation from a single source of truth. Additionally utilising cloud connections between interpretation software and Geotechnical analysis software, ensures numerical analysis can be consistent and quickly rerun when the Geological interpretation changes. Having subsurface interpretation in a cloud environment provides capability for more efficient communication and collaboration with all key stakeholders. It provides designers access to the latest geological interpretation which can then be utilised within their designs. The paper will include examples where these benefits are being realised on existing projects of various scales.

Taking the intersection section of subway interval tunnel and high-speed railroad as the research object, the influence of subway interval tunnel construction on the settlement and deformation of the overlying high-speed railroad roadbed is analyzed by using three-dimensional finite difference method, and the results are compared with the calculation results of the unreinforced case to demonstrate the reinforcement effect of the high-speed railway roadbed reinforcement scheme. The results show that: (1) under the reinforced condition, the maximum settlement of the HSR roadbed is 6.47 mm and the maximum uneven settlement is 0.36 mm, which are 33.16% and 91.69% less than that of the unreinforced condition, respectively, and the settlement caused by the implementation of metro project is within the allowable deformation of HSR track;(2) without reinforcement of the stratum of the crossing section, the uneven settlement of the overlying railroad is caused by the middle section of the tunnel by shield excavation, and the roadbed at the top of the tunnel is not reinforced, and the uneven settlement of the overlying railroad is caused by the tunnel excavation. In the case of no reinforcement in the ground layer of the crossing section, the shield excavation causes uneven settlement of the railroad over the middle cross-section of the tunnel, the roadbed at the top of the tunnel forms a trough-like subsidence, and the roadbed at the top of the tunnel between the tunnels has a crestlike rise. The final settlement is larger in the tunnel that is excavated first, which has a "first to dig" effect. Under the effect of reinforcement measures, the maximum lateral settlement and maximum uneven settlement of the ground surface in the middle cross-section of the tunnel were significantly reduced, and the surface uplift phenomenon was eliminated. (3) Due to the deformation of the tunnel underneath, measures should be taken to reduce the speed of the railroad, reasonably determine the

Different approaches are used to analyze and manage the life cycles of municipal traffic areas, in which road condition assessment plays a key role. Condition values of pavement surfaces can be assessed in Germany using a whole range of measurement methods. The methods differ not only in the depth of data collection, but also in terms of the type of spatial referencing. Area-based methods and node-edge models are used. Both models have advantages and disadvantages. Node-edge models are defined in the technical regulations and have a standardized object type library and semantics. This is not the case with area-based models. Further area-based models are more accurate in terms of damage coding, but do not allow a direction-related analyzing, which is essential for a network-wide evaluation as part of an asset management system. With the expansion of traffic infrastructure assessment to non-motorized lanes advanced methods of condition assessment have been developed, which need to be integrated in existing systems. Those include mobile mapping, for example, which was originally established for collecting as-built data;by now the provided geocoded point clouds linked to the image data of the scanned environment are municipally used to perform condition assessments. However, there is no link to the network node-edge system (NE system). Therefore, these results can neither be quality-assured with the established methods of asset management nor can they be used for condition assessment in a comparable way to that. The article uses examples to show which advantages and disadvantages are to be expected depending on the NE system or referencing to geodata and how a link can be made for using the results of road assessment in municipal approaches for asset management systems. Therefore, future requirements of Building Information Modeling, or BIM for short, are also taken into account.

Hygric pore network modelling and simulation, employing the pore network (PN) extracted from pore structure images, is a powerful tool for obtaining the hygric properties of porous materials. However, reliable PN acquisition of porous building materials remains elusive, because of the continuous size distributions of pore elements across several length scales. The extracted single-scale PN from an individual pore structure image can only unveil a partial reality, while the multi-scale PN, that combines several single-scale PNs, is neither directly applicable since there often is no distinct separation of scales in such continuous pore element size distributions. This paper, therefore, introduces an indirect method to generate full-scale PNs of porous building materials. Several single-scale PNs of a real building material, ceramic brick, are extracted from its X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) and X-ray Microscopy (XRM) images, each with varying spatial resolutions. Statistical data of these extracted PNs is subsequently integrated to facilitate stochastic full-scale PN generation. The generated full-scale PN maintains the PN parameter distributions, along with the parameter correlations. Furthermore, the hygric properties of the generated full-scale PN are obtained through simulation and compared with measured data for validation. The results indicate a strong agreement across the majority of the moisture retention and permeability curves, and the potential explanations for the disparity are discussed for future improvement.

The utilisation of crumb rubber through a dry process is a practical and economical method to confront the challenges of tyre recycling and environmental sustainability. This study aimed to identify the mechanical behaviour of the rubberised SMA mixture. Therefore, the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effect of independent variables such as binder content, CR content, curing time and CR size on mechanical response variables. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) based on Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) of the asphalt mixtures was performed to analyse the data. A quadratic polynomial model effectively fitted the experimental results and reliably predicted performance outcomes with an acceptable level of accuracy. This study reveals that alongside independent variables, their interactions are pivotal, as evidenced by the varying behaviour of ITS under different interaction scenarios. Recognising these interactions is crucial for precise design, ensuring efficient performance in rubberised SMA pavements.

With the rise of environmental concerns and the impact of information technologies, architecture is changing, and so are the methods of design. Thus, new approaches based on principles of information sharing, data, algorithms and collaboration are at the forefront of theoretical and practical architecture debates. This article presents a collaborative methodological approach to digital design, creating a system where the relationships between form, structure, and material are informed and interact dynamically. The approach proposed operates at the intersection of various disciplines, including mathematics, mechanics, physics, construction history, and computation. It relies on collaboration among diverse actors, enabling each to contribute their practical and constructive expertise in a comprehensive and integrated manner across multiple dimensions of the architectural project. Considering innovation as an intrinsic element within a continuous historical context, this research identifies in a past construction technique the potential for developing innovative systems. To revalue the connection between tradition and innovation, focusing on the links between form, technique and construction, we present an example application of the methodology for formfinding of a flat stone vault. This application is based on a topological interlocking system, which draws inspiration from a patent dating back to the 17th century. We detail the numerical design steps of the stone system as well as the prototyping phase based on the use of traditional stereotomy cutting methods. Finally, we present a prototype built during a workshop with students from Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Architecture de Paris-Malaquais, in collaboration with Compagnons du Devoir et du Tour de France.

The significant CO2 emission during cement production requires strategies for a more sustainable future. One approach is to replace the cement fraction with other materials partially. Volcanic ash can be used as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) due to the pozzolanic reactivity. In this study, the use of three volcanic ashes as SCMs were examined using samples from Laacher See (Germany), Etna (Italy), and Tungurahua (Ecuador) volcanoes, respectively. Mortar mixtures were prepared with 20 wt.-% of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) replaced by volcanic ash and compared to reference mixtures containing 100 wt.-% OPC or 20 wt.-% limestone powder as inert filler. After 90 days, Volcanic ash mortars reached comparable compressive and flexural strength levels to the OPC reference mortar, with no replacement. In addition, three different methods were used to determine the chloride penetration resistance of the hardened mortars. The chloride penetration resistance of all volcanic ash blended mortar samples was higher than the reference mortar after 90 days. The results show that all tested volcanic ashes can be used as SCMs according to European Standards, yielding improved durability performance when compared to plain OPC or OPC with 20% limestone filler.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of curtain folds on both the amount of condensed water on the window glass surface and the airflow in the space between the curtain and window glass, focusing on the folds, which are the unique shapes of curtains. In this study, two experiments were conducted: one to measure the amount of condensation water and the other to visualize the airflow. In the condensation measurement experiment, the amount of condensed water on the window glass surface was measured while the indoor and outdoor temperatures and humidity were kept constant. The results showed that the amount of condensed water was lower with curtains than without curtains, and that lower with curtains without folds than with folds. The Lewis number of the space between the curtain and the window glass ranged from 1.7 to 2.1. In the airflow visualization experiment, the airflows in the space between the curtain and window glass and inside the folds of the curtain were measured. It was confirmed that the airflow in the space between the curtain and window glass flowed from top to bottom in large swirls, whereas the airflow inside the folds was uniform from top to bottom.

The paper aims to delineate a workflow that demonstrates how the application of a digital process can facilitate a comprehensive comprehension of the current crisis state of overturning masonries applied to a case study. By delving into interoperability challenges and details in scan-to-hBIM processes, the approach clarifies how hBIM models can nonetheless underpin operations aimed at maintaining and preserving existing historic assets, even from a structural standpoint, albeit with persistent challenges. This illustrative exploration highlights the efficacy of leveraging digital technologies in advancing the conservation and management practices of built cultural heritage, particularly in addressing structural concerns associated with historic masonries. As dataset accuracy becomes crucial when it comes to architectural heritage, where surveyed objects exhibit complex shapes and significant damage, thus the information should involve meticulous knowledge, anamnesis, visual inspection, and instrumental measures. It is a deliberate, synthetic operation that leads to the formation of an assessment structural model. A key finding of the present paper is that the precision and detail of the model determine the accuracy of structural analysis results, emphasizing the importance of accuracy consideration in order to achieve meaningful and reliable results. As a consequence, the building assessment demonstrated which parts of the building's facades were overturning, while identifying the thorough kinematic phenomena progressively acting. The related considerations lead to a structural project shaped on the unique characteristics of the complex supported by data as accurately as possible, which also positively influenced the entire architectural design process.
