The connection operation window of the mud return line can determine the environmental limits of safe operation, which is very important to ensure the safety of the riserless drilling system. To analyze the safe operation window of the mud return line, a mechanical model of the mud return line is established based on the infinitesimal method. The safe operation criteria of the mud return line under connected condition is proposed. The operation window analysis process of the mud return line based on the dichotomous method is established. According to the analysis of the operation window for the riserless mud return line, it is found that the safety of the mud return line decreases with the increase of current velocity and wave amplitude. The operation window of the mud return line is sensitive to the change in wave amplitude. The riserless drilling system is recommended when the current velocity is less than 0.8 m/s and the wave amplitude is less than 5 m.

In the context of energy performance improvement, a question often arises about the maintenance of historical rendered facades. Several thermal mortars have been developed with different lightweight fillers like EPS granules, hemp, or expanded mineral materials such as volcanic sand and clay. According to the standard EN998-1, renovation and thermal mortars used in external elements must meet property values like the coefficient of water absorption due to capillary action (CWA). In the current study the influence of silane on water absorption properties was studied. Different levels of silane content were studied: 1, 10, 20, and 30 times the manufacturer recommendation and compared with a mixture without silane (0). During hardening, the specimens were kept in two different environments: in regular and forced carbonation conditions. Forced carbonation either increased (0, 20, 30 times of silane content) or had no influence on water absorption (1 and 10 times). In general, adding silane decreased water absorption by up to 19 times (from 2.84 to 0.15 kg/(m(2)min(0.5))) for "carbonated" specimens). Silane contents of 20 and 30 times decreased (0.12-0.26 kg/(m(2)min(0.5))) to meet the properties of thermal mortars according to EN 998-1 (W(c)1 <= 0.4 kg/(m(2)min(0.5))).

In the current circumstance of road construction, sustainability and social impact present significant challenges. Despite numerous pavement infrastructure projects, including new construction and rehabilitation, environmental impacts have escalated due to excessive consumption of natural aggregates and conventional Portland cement. This study aims to address these challenges by developing an alternative road material through the integration of sub-standard fine crushed rock (SFCR) and low carbon cement (LCC) into self-compacting concrete (SCC), promoting eco-friendliness. The research focused on incorporating SFCR, a by-product from a commercial rock quarry in Northern Thailand, into SCC. Particle size distribution (PSD) modification of SFCR facilitated waste management. Proportions of LCC and water in SCC mixes were systematically optimized, then evaluated their impact on fresh workability and unconfined compressive strength. Results showed that SCC mixes with coarser PSD exhibit higher strength and resilient modulus than finer mixtures. The selected SCC mixture demonstrated favorable flexural modulus and tensile fatigue resistance, surpassing traditional cement-treated natural gravel. Mechanical-empirical pavement design analysis and life cycle assessment (LCA) revealed that the chosen SCC mixture reduced total construction costs by approximately 7% and achieved over 30% savings in greenhouse gas emissions during road base construction. Eventually, this innovative material and concrete technique would align with sustainable development goals in civil engineering, offering a promising solution in waste management, and contributing to high eco-friendliness in infrastructure development industry.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can effectively support Urban Building Energy Modelling (UBEM) approaches, which are increasingly implemented and adopted to assess the energy performance of the existing built environment. GIS data may provide a suitable input base to perform building energy analysis at an urban scale. In this context, this manuscript first analyses geospatial open data both quantitatively and qualitatively, as they may supply useful input data sets to enable UBEM-based simulations. Moreover, this contribution also proposes a methodological workflow to effectively cross-check and pre-process geospatial open data, by also providing a GIS tool specifically implemented through the QGIS (Quantum GIS) graphical model designer. The proposed tool allows a user to automatically pre-process georeferenced open data and generate a suitable input file for UBEM simulations inside QGIS environment. It is also worth specifying that the herein advanced method is conceived to provide the georeferenced input data set required to perform UBEM simulations through the open-source EUReCA tool, freely released by the BETALAB research group of the University of Padova (Padova, Italy). The presented methodological workflow is a preliminary outcome of the ongoing research conducted withing the scope of the NEST (Network for Energy Sustainable Technologies) Task 8.4.7 project concerning "Urban Building Energy Modelling (UBEM) and urban green infrastructures modelling for Renewable Energy Communities (REC) and Positive Energy Districts (PED)", financed by the European Union -NextGenerationEU- and coordinated by the University of Padova. At the end of the paper, the main findings and results derived from the application of the proposed tool to a case study area in Cagliari (Italy) are discussed to point out strengths and weaknesses of the method, by also bringing to light some relevant gaps affecting open geospatial data sets.

In Australia, most rail systems are constructed along the coastal line, traversing soft soil deposits that can cause a series of track instabilities, including excessive plastic deformation and mud pumping. For this reason, the subgrade is considered one of the most critical components of the railway infrastructure, and the accurate prediction of its undrained shear behaviour is of utmost importance to ensure track integrity and safety over time. The subgrade is composed of naturally deposited soil, which may be modified using compaction or consolidation techniques to improve its bearing capacity. In each method, the soil presents a unique arrangement of particles, groups of particles, and voids (referred to as fabric), which govern the response of subgrade soils to the substantial loads imposed by moving trains. For this study, samples of clayey subgrade soil were collected from a site where track degradation had been reported. The soil was reconstituted using slurry consolidation and compaction methods to create different fabrics. A series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were then carried out to investigate the influence of specimen preparation methods on the shear behaviour of soil. Differences in soil fabric were assessed through X-ray microcomputer-tomography (micro-CT), providing insights into the variations observed in the cyclic response. Based on the findings, it is evident that fabric plays a crucial role in the shear behaviour of subgrade soils and should, therefore, be considered in railway infrastructure design.

The production of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC/CEM I) contributes around 7-8% to total global CO2e emissions. This research investigates the reduced heat of hydration in a sprayed concrete (SC) containing a high proportion of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) as a cement replacement to reduce the embodied carbon by around 60%. Two spraying trials were conducted, one with CEM I and another with 70% GGBS and 30% CEM I (CEM IIIB). During the trials, temperature evolution was monitored using thermocouples. Cores extracted from the sprayed panels were used to compare the strength of the two mixes. Results showed that the temperature evolution of 70% GGBS concrete was lower than the CEM I concrete, therefore making it less susceptible to thermal cracking and subsequent related durability issues. The strength of the 70% GGBS concrete was also higher than the CEM I at all testing ages. These preliminary outcomes indicate that the GGBS has a significant potential as an alternative, low embodied carbon binder offering high strength and durability properties.

Technological evolution has allowed the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in an easier and more diversified way, creating opportunities for its application in various fields of engineering, namely in the inspection of transport infrastructures. The present study begins with the analysis of the main practices that resort to the use of UAVs, in order to frame its application in the field of transport pavement inspection. A review of studies and other available literature served as a starting point to define the methodology adopted for the development of the case study presented. The methodology includes the collection of images of a flexible road pavement section, its processing, and the creation of an orthoimage and a 3D model from which it was possible to identify and characterize the distresses present on the pavement surface. The main results obtained point to planimetric and altimetric deviations of less than 2 and 10 mm, respectively, for the images collected by theMavic 2 Pro drone at 3 and 20mhigh. With the collected data, itwas also possible to calculate the global quality index PCI for the inspected pavement section. Under these conditions, it is possible to conclude that the accuracy is very good and suitable for the intended purpose, allowing fast data collection at low cost. This new technological approach supports infrastructure managers in the design of maintenance programs and in the scheduling of interventions, thus contributing to the increase of the durability and safety levels of the inspected pavements.

Numerical heat, air, and moisture (HAM) models enable powerful predictions of the hygrothermal behavior of building components. While the embedded formulations of the transfer equations and boundary conditions are largely physically equivalent, deviations amongst different models might still occur, due to different assumptions, simplifications, and approximations in implemented material properties, boundary conditions, etc. This paper presents results of an empirical round robin validation, in which the hygrothermal responses of wall assemblies under controlled boundary conditions are simulated by different models. Participants are assumed to be "engineers", lacking dedicated measured material properties but applying technical sheets from the manufacturers. Material properties can thus be determined from built-in databases or generated from available datasheets. Boundary conditions are known, while non-specified surface transport coefficients can be derived from standards or from experience. The confrontation to the experimental datasets is used to validate the models' robustness by similar trends. "Result overlapping" indicates the inherent differences of the models. User preferences, biases and/or mistakes in implementing material properties and surface transport coefficients are found to yield disparity or even incorrectness. Despite the significant deviations in implemented material properties and surface transport coefficients, heat-related outputs express considerable similarities, while moisture-related outputs show larger disparity.

In response to the problems of liquid accumulation and sand production during offshore natural gas hydrate extraction, this paper proposes a technical solution that combines concentric coiled tubing closed-loop circulation, jet pump lifting, sand flushing and plugging removal, etc. It can achieve pressure control and lifting of natural gas hydrates, control the recovery rate of hydrates, and remove the sand bed at the bottom of the well at any time according to on-site requirements, with high operational efficiency. Through experimental research on the lifting and suction volume of jet pumps, it has been shown that the distance between the throat and the power nozzle has a significant influence on the suction volume of jet pumps. For distances between 6 mm and 12 mm, the suction volume of the jet pump significantly increases, while the lifting pressure slightly decreases. When the distance is between 12 mm and 18 mm, the suction volume of the jet pump first increases and then decreases, while the lifting pressure decreases. The fluid pressure at the inlet significantly affects the suction volume of the jet pump. Under the action of power fluid pressure, the suction volume of the jet pump significantly increases, while the lifting pressure of the jet pump remains relatively constant. Compared with other lifting methods, it can achieve stable production of natural gas hydrates by reducing bottomhole pressure, solving the problems of severe sand blockage and extending the production cycle of natural gas hydrates.

The paper analyses the response of the masonry arch, modelled according to the usual Heyman no tension model and hit temperature variations. This problem is considered basic for the study of the thermal response of more complex constructions like domes, vaults etc. under the daily or the annual ordinary temperature changes. All the problems inherent the resistance to fire is instead excluded. The paper shows that the minimum or the maximum thrust states, classical in the behavior of all the pushing no tension structures, are the key stones to explain the response of the arch to the action of uniform temperature changes. Special attention is given to the evaluation of the consequent displacements and the corresponding excursions of the crack widths.
