As an innovative foundation used in the offshore floating platform, the scaled suction caisson (SSC) has a greater advantage in the installation and service than the traditional suction caisson (TSC). To investigate the pull-out capacity of the SSC, the numerical simulations are carried out under static and cyclic loads. The study shows the inclined pull-out capacity of the SSC increases with increasing the loading angle., but firstly increases, then decreases with increasing the padeye depth. Compared with the TSC, the inclined pull-out capacity of the SSC increases by 20 similar to 40% when the loading angles. are in the range of 0 similar to 30 degrees, but its values increase by 100% when the loading angles exceed 60 degrees. Under the combined static and cyclic loads, the vertical cumulative displacement of the SSC decreases, but horizontal cumulative displacement increases. The total cumulative displacement of the SSC decreases by 13% compared with the TSC. It can be concluded that more soils can mobilized by the bio-scale surface to resist the pull-out loads. As a result, the SSC significantly improves inclined pull-out capacity and decreases the cumulative displacement.

Lateral restraint and stability are essential factors in preventing the buckling of railway tracks, especially as a result of the tendency of the rails to expand in hot weather. Many factors influence lateral restraint including sleeper type, weight, contact area between the sleeper and ballast, sleeper spacing, ballast grading and density, and the dimensions/geometry of any ballast shoulder. Additional stabilising measures sometimes provided to increase lateral stability include under-sleeper pads (USPs) and lateral restraint plates (LRPs). This paper presents the results of a series of experimental studies into the effects of these measures on different sleepers using the Southampton Railway Testing Facility (SRTF). The results show that attaching USP and LRP to a standard concrete sleeper increases the lateral resistance by about 50% and 47.46%, respectively. For other types, the weight of the sleeper influences the percentage increase/decrease in the lateral resistance.

This research presents a study about the influence of cement content and the piassava fibers (Attalea funifera) on the mechanical behavior of a fine-grained subgrade soil. Specimens of 10 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height were prepared from natural subgrade soil, 2wt.% of cement content, and 1,5wt.% piassava fiber from the Brazilian Amazon. Repeated load triaxial tests (RLT) with different stresses were conducted to provide permanent deformation behavior and the results were analyzed based on shakedown analysis. The aim was to verify if the addition of these fibers in a soil/cement matrix generates a significant effect on the mechanical behavior of the material regarding its permanent deformation, given the unsatisfactory geotechnical characteristics of the sedimentary soils in the Amazon region. It was found that the piassava fiber addition decreased the soil permanent deformation, although when mixed with cement, the permanent deformation was not significantly affected.

New trends in digitalization in construction have created opportunities for research and informed decision-making. Concepts like digital twins and sensorization have successfully enabled the direct collection of data from construction processes and equipment. For instance, integrating sensors into trucks transporting construction materials facilitates gathering valuable information about the equipment and the surrounding environment. This previously unattainable data can now be utilized to provide pertinent insights into the decision-making process. On one hand, accurate fuel consumption estimations are required to help optimization in construction and transportation infrastructure projects as they represent a major expense. On the other hand, despite the numerous studies conducted to detect cracks and potholes in road pavements, the classification of road types is frequently overlooked. This study aims to bridge this gap by developing a methodological framework that utilizes vibration data from sensors installed in construction trucks to predict the fuel consumption of heavy vehicles and the road category based on the pavement surface quality through which it is circulated. Given their promising results in prior research, the models Random Forest, Neural Network, and Support Vector Machine were applied to the database. The results demonstrate that vibration-based data acquisition methods combined with machine learning algorithms can accurately predict fuel consumption, identify different road categories, and can be successfully applied on a larger scale.

Globally, there is a growing focus and emphasis on the conversion of carbon emissions. In the context of dual carbon goals, carbon emission management has become a crucial method for energy conservation, consumption reduction, and technological transformation. However, existing carbon accounting methods tend to be biased towards scientific theoretical research, lacking a practical methodology for calculating the carbon dioxide equivalent. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method for the environmental engineering investment, construction, and operational carbon conversion process. This method encompasses a full process, full coverage, and full correlation, while being easy to operate. It involves collecting data during the operational phase of a project and converting this data into carbon emission quantities. This allows for the calculation of the carbon conversion value of economic indicators and the total carbon emissions. Particularly, the approach of simulating the carbon conversion value of economic indicators and incorporating it into the total carbon emissions of the environmental engineering investment, construction, and operational process offers a valuable research path for the holistic assessment of environmental engineering projects and related scientific studies.

In modern construction project management, the adoption of advanced 3D technologies is becoming a pivotal strategy for improving interoperability and visualization in construction management practices. However, challenges arise when these 3D applications need to be seamlessly connected to any network to project real-time data obtained from different sources, such as IoT sensors, Federated and Distributed Simulation models, and cameras, as part of the Digital Twin concept. This study examines three prominent 3D applications-Blender, Unreal Engine, and NVIDIA Omniverse-as key components in a federated simulation framework as visualizer federates. The primary goal is to enhance construction project visualization efficiency within federated simulation. Blender, known for its open-source nature, simplifies data integration and model creation. Unreal Engine, famous for real-time rendering, offers an immersive and lifelike visualization experience. NVIDIA Omniverse, an extensible 3D platform, introduces collaborative design possibilities, facilitating real-time data exchange and interactive simulations for construction project stakeholders. However, challenges arise when integrating these applications into federated simulations using High Level Architecture (HLA). These challenges include creating application connectors to enable seamless data exchange with other platforms using modeling and simulation standards like HLA, as well as converting 3D models between different formats. This study systematically evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of these three applications and suggests strategies to address the challenges encountered during their incorporation into federated simulations. By comprehensively assessing their potential as visualizer federates and addressing data exchange and model compatibility issues, the research aims to fully harness these 3D applications as representative platforms for visualizing construction project status in a federated simulation. The objective of this review paper is to summarize the numerous investigations carried out by various researchers and engineers about the use of waste materials to stabilize expansive soil. These materials include bagasse ash, eggshell powder, brick dust, fly ash, and other admixtures. Industrialization has led to the production of large quantities of industrial by-products that pose a threat to natural habitats. Disposing of these by-products, such as bagasse ash, fly ash, brick powder, construction and demolition waste, and agricultural waste, has become a potential hazard to the ecosystem. A real solution is necessary, as improper disposal of these wastes into open land or water bodies can cause environmental pollution. One potential solution is to utilize these waste materials in the construction industry on a large scale as a subgrade stabilizer or an additive to cement-based materials. This study investigates the stabilization and strength characteristics of expansive soil using a range of waste materials. Moreover, a comparison is made on the effectiveness of these materials in enhancing the engineering properties of expansive soil. The study found that waste materials such as fly ash and bagasse ash are effective admixtures for strengthening the subgrade of clayey soil by significantly improving the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) value. The highest CBR values at both 2.5 mm and 5 mm penetrations were achieved when the soil was mixed with 10% brick powder content, resulting in CBR values of 7.24% and 6.54%, respectively. Additionally, UCS increased from 0.445 kg/cm2 for virgin soil to 1.394 kg/cm2 for soil mixed with 12% brick powder. In summary, waste materials can be a sustainable and effective solution for stabilizing expansive soils.

Solar energy is becoming a cardinal element for the decarbonization of our society and pushing toward new levels of energy conservation. In current practice, great attention has been paid to photovoltaic systems that are in a phase of great expansion. Nevertheless, other technologies such as solar air collectors can be a promising solution to help in the process of achieving zero-energy buildings, especially considering more advanced solutions. In this study, the use of a concentrating solar air collector to provide heating and domestic hot water in a residential building in cold climates is explored. The innovative solution employs a rock bed storage to store thermal energy for heating applications and an air-to-water heat exchanger to exploit the surplus energy, especially in the summer period, and convert it into domestic hot water. Simulations are performed with transient simulation software TRNSYS considering a two-story building located in Krakow (Poland). The control system considers different variables and parameters for the activation of the different components of the plant to optimize the plant operation and maximize energy efficiency. Results indicate how the proposed system can considerably contribute to the heating of the building and almost completely satisfy the energy need for domestic hot water.

The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology in architectural projects stakeholders to collaborate around a digital mock-up that contains all relevant and shared information throughout a building's lifecycle. One emerging application of BIM technology focuses on occupational health and safety by providing opportunities for safety risks prevention from the building's design phase. In this context, BIM provides a set of standards that enable the modelling of the main building component. Although IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is considered as a standardized, digital description of the built asset (ISO 16739-1:2018), it does not cover all the elements and properties necessary to represent and describe work activities related to requirements induced by the architectural model. Therefore, this situation makes the comprehensive formalization of safety requirements in buildings incomplete. It is thus necessary to add data information and knowledge from external sources. The objective of the article is to provide an in-depth analysis of the literature from 145 articles extracted over the last 5 years (2019-2023) regarding the representation of safety requirements in an IFC model based on work situations at different project phases. The analysis of the systematic review reveals that there are specific ontological knowledge models dedicated to health and safety, but it is important to consider both the contributions and limitations of these ontologies. This article examines how semantic enrichment of the IFC model tends to use in research projects to address this issue. In addition, these projects provides several use cases that facilitate risks factors identification, verify safety requirements, and propose recommendations occupational risk and safety prevention.

There is a pressing need worldwide to find alternative cementitious materials to produce low-embodied-carbon cement and sustainable concrete. This study compared the potential of quaternary blended cements - limestone calcined clay cements (LC3) - using calcined clays from Australian sources: metakaolin (Mk) from traditionally-accepted kaolinite clay, and a rarely-examined calcinedbentonite (CB). Paste specimens were prepared with optimally calcined clays along with limestone and gypsum to achieve 50% clinker replacement and the properties were compared with an Australian Type General Purpose ordinary Portland cement (OPC) paste. Mechanical strength, phase development and selected durability-indicator properties were investigated on specimens cured for 7 and 28days. Bentonite basedLC(3) blends achieved about 96% strength, whileMkbased LC3 blends achieved about 86% strength of the 28d-old control OPC. Results from X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of more carboaluminates and ettringite phases in Mk based LC3 blends compared to OPC, but portlandite consumption and ettringite formation indicated greater pozzolanic reaction in bentonite LC3 blends. The resistance to water penetration measured by water absorption and sorptivity in bentonite based LC3 blends was greater or comparable to the control OPC and was greater than Mk based LC3 blends. Overall, these results demonstrate that some bentonites can be used as alternatives to kaolinite for producing LC3 blended cements and suggest that other locally available clay minerals should be investigated for their potential in sustainable cement-production.
