Since the 1960s, prefabrication has become an increasingly popular technique for building construction. Prefabricated building components are preferred because they can save costs, expedite construction schedules, increase quality control, and provide safer working environments. Despite the initial extensive use of prefabricated buildings for residential purposes, the acknowledged advantages were also applied to the construction of new schools. The urgent need to quickly establish a network of new schools at all levels led the main manufacturers of prefabricated components to file numerous patents for prefabricated panels and floors. These were widely used in all regions until the early 1980s. Today, most of these buildings, constructed using compositional schemes that involved the assembly of prefabricated cells, require energy and functional retrofit interventions. Understanding the patents and technologies used is essential for optimizing the redevelopment intervention in terms of costs and fully leveraging the replicability of the project to be applied to schools of the same historical era and prefabrication type. Regarding prefabricated school buildings, particularly nursery schools, there are several opportunities to support energy and environmental retrofit projects and optimize the inherent opportunities in prefabricated panels. The paper aims to present a retrofit project workflow for single-story prefab nursery schools. The case studies are in Carpi, in northern Italy.

With the bloom of construction, there is an increasing need to span larger and larger spans that can be used in workshops, factories, and alike. The traditional go-to solution for large spans is steel due to its strength and fast construction. However, the cost of steel is increasing in addition to the fact that it is a non-ecofriendly material, as its manufacturing incurs tremendous energy consumption. An alternative solution that has not been utilized in Egypt and similar arid countries is wood due to the import of most of the wood in Egypt. The main goal of this study is to develop a large-span curved beam fabricated from laminates of locally grown Casuarina glauca wood that will be a more economical and sustainable alternative to steel structures. Flexural strength tests were performed on scaled beam models to determine the mechanical properties of Casuarina glulam in bending. Test results were used to develop structural analysis models to assess the structural soundness of a main span beam made from such material. The cost-effectiveness and the eco-friendliness of this design alternative are compared to those of steel and concrete.

As part of a wide-ranging programme aimed at enhancing the material cultural heritage of Sant'Angelo d'Alife territory (Caserta), the research team of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples and the ISPC-CNR of Potenza drew up the guidelines of a project for activities aimed at the knowledge and conservation of the rupestrian settlement on the slopes of the Matese to be carried out through a safety fruition of the site, preserving its peculiarities and qualities and ensuring an appropriate interpretation. The project is proposed as an innovative and sustainable intervention, aimed at preserving an important archaeological and religious site to which the local community is particularly attached. The rupestral condition is a pre-eminent aspect to be protected and at the same time the origin and cause of the problems underlying its restoration and enjoyment. Difficult environmental conditions, the falling of rock fragments inside the cave due to karst-type phenomena, are overcome ensuring a safe and sustainable coexistence. A comprehensive 3D survey acquired the data for an in-depth knowledge of the cave, from geomorphology to the details of the surviving structures and, at the same time, laid the foundation for defining risk control tools and project guidance. In the perspective of an archaeological investigation, in order to free the entrance from strata that have accumulated over the centuries and bring to light the ancient structures, a compatible fruition is planned that envisages the coexistence of excavation, conservation and public reception activities. The intervention is characterised by a sustainable, light and adaptable approach, capable of responding to current conservation needs, ensuring protection and guaranteeing immersive enjoyment of the cave/sanctuary complex.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) has become vital as it significantly influences human health and well-being. Given that people spend most of their lifetime indoors, assessing and maintaining an optimal IAQ is essential for ensuring the well-being of occupants. Numerous interrelated triggers influence Indoor Air Quality (IAQ): outdoor air quality, occupant behavior, building materials, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, contaminant sources, temperature, and humidity. To better assess IAQ, the development of efficient methodologies and tools is necessary. This study evaluates indoor air quality (IAQ) in office environments through advanced mechanical ventilation strategies at the HYBCELL facility, ENTPE, France. The facility was instrumented with sensors to track various elements affecting indoor and outdoor air quality, such as temperature, humidity, air velocity, particulate matter (PM2.5, PM5, and PM10), CO2, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Moreover, the facility is equipped with mechanical ventilation systems to assess the impact of different ventilation strategies on pollutant levels. The results demonstrate the importance of adaptive ventilation strategies for maintaining optimal indoor environments. The findings underscore that a Demand-based Ventilation Control strategy can effectively regulate CO2 concentrations within desired limits, thus promoting a healthierworkspace. Onthe other hand, fixed fan speeds provided valuable insights into the direct relationship between ventilation rates, pollutant concentrations, and energy consumption.

This study explores the implications of multiscale data acquisition within historic centers, proposing a survey protocol that integrates a hierarchical approach across three distinct scales-urban/territorial, district, and building-in order to optimize the accuracy and efficiency of the analysis of historic urban environments. Each scale serves a specific purpose and yields varying levels of data detail, which are crucial for informed urban planning and conservation strategies. The research is conducted within the framework of the GENESIS project, "Seismic risk management for the touristic valorization of the historical centers of Southern Italy" (PON MIUR "Research and Innovation" 2014-2020 and FSC. D.D. 13 July 2017 n. 1735). It aims at acquiring extensive datasets with different levels of accuracy, addressing the computational challenges associated with processing and analyzing multiscale data. The study highlights the distinct computational demands required for urban- and district-scale data compared to detail-scale data. Urban-scale data, which encompasses broader architectural and urban contexts, demands algorithms capable of handling extensive datasets with varying resolutions and formats. In contrast, detail-scale data, which focuses on individual architectural elements, requires high-resolution processing to capture fine details and textures essential for conservation purposes. This multiscale approach not only enhances the overall understanding of the cultural and architectural heritage of the investigated area but also allows for tailored conservation efforts based on the specific needs and characteristics identified at each level of analysis.

Pipeline leakage is a common problem in industrial production, and it is a key factor restricting the safety and reliability of pipeline system, which may lead to safety accidents, environmental polluted and resource waste. Therefore, accurate and rapid detection and location of pipeline leakage points is very important to ensure production safety and environmental protection. A pipeline leak location method based on adaptive median filter algorithm is proposed, and an adaptive median filter model is established, which realizes noise filtering and data adaptive picking, and accurately extracts signal features. The generalized weighted quadratic cross correlation algorithm is used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, obtain the time delay estimation and locate the leakage point. Subsea Manifolds are used as a case to demonstrate the proposed method. The experimental results show that the method can detect and locate the leakage point of pipeline quickly and accurately, and has high reliability and practicability. This study provides an effective solution for pipeline leakage monitoring and location, and has important engineering application prospects.

The reuse and recycling of waste materials has become imperative as the construction industry strives to minimise its carbon footprint and contribute towards sustainable development. Taking into account that aggregates often represent the largest proportion of the materials used in railway foundations, the incorporation of alternative (i.e. recycled) aggregates could significantly reduce the adverse environmental impacts from the construction of such infrastructures. This paper discusses recent advances and challenges associated with the use of recycled C&D materials in the rail track substructure. A comprehensive laboratory study was carried out to assess the relevant physical, mechanical and chemical properties of different types of recycled C&D aggregates and to determine whether their application as alternative fill materials in the railway substructure would be feasible. Test results have shown that recycled aggregates from C&D waste may be suitable for inclusion in embankment and form layer of railway infrastructures. A major challenge related to the use of these recycled aggregates in the subballast layer is their relatively high susceptibility to breakage and wear. None of the recycled C&D materials raised any environmental concerns that could hamper their application in railway foundations.

Sustainable development on remote islands encounters hurdles such as environmental, logistical, and economic constraints. Small islands face insufficiency and limitations in construction materials due to limited natural resources. Lightweight structures emerge as transformative solutions to overcome challenges in construction. Santiago Island faces construction complications intensified by adverse weather and logistical issues, particularly disruptions in material transport. This study proposed a lightweight structure by addressing logistical challenges, environmental challenges, and structural costs, assessing existing materials including bamboo, exploring sustainable design principles, incorporating structural standards, and constructing and evaluating a typhoon-resistant structural system. The study results of the identification of lightweight construction materials and techniques available on Santiago Island and the investigation of a sustainable design system, which is the A-frame house design or triangular-shaped structure, foster sustainable development and resilience for remote islands. Structural analysis of the lightweight sustainable design was also identified through STAAD to comprehensively check all the structural members. The results of the research propose a hopeful remedy for crafting a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and durable architectural blueprint tailored specifically for communities residing on small islands within low- to middle-income nations.

This study addresses the impact of spectral daylight dynamics in an indoor space under overcast sky conditions. Present building codes overlook the spectral composition of daylight, focusing primarily on total light quantity rather than its spectral distribution and its effects on occupants. This case study documents the spectral daylight quality in a simple room by employing multidirectional measurements, and these are compared to simulations done in Lark Spectral Lighting software. The study demonstrates a reasonable agreement between the simulated and measured illuminance levels, with an average error of 11%. However, a wavelength comparison shows a lesser correlation with an average error of 32% for all wavelengths and 22% when measurements are grouped and averaged in 9-channels bins. This error might be partly caused by changes in sky intensity during measurements. The results emphasize the substantial influence of factors like positioning, and view direction. Navigating these complexities underscores the need for change in our approach to indoor daylight quality, indicating a need for a revision of traditional daylight metrics for a more occupant-centric design.

As the service life of industrial building structures increases and they are subjected to complex loads for a long time, it is inevitable for them to suffer damage. Neglecting such damage for a long period of time can lead to structural failure or even collapse, and the safety and durability of the structures urgently require resolution. The harsh working environment and complex load conditions of industrial buildings limit the application of monitoring technology in the field of industrial engineering diagnosis and treatment. Due to the progress of the new generation of diagnostic technology, intelligent monitoring, analysis, evaluation, and diagnosis technology based on expert knowledge and data-driven integration will become an important research direction for industrial building diagnosis and treatment. This study is based on passive wireless sensing technology and focuses on the monitoring of industrial building structures using passive wireless sensing systems. The accuracy target of 3% was achieved, and the feasibility of passive sensing technology was verified. Over the long term, this study will promote the application of passive wireless sensing technology in the field of civil engineering and provide newideas for the development of civil engineering structure safety and intelligent sensing research.
