The waste generation is a major problem these days and waste management has become an important part to deal with this problem in today's world. With rapid development and urbanization, waste is also being produced at a considerable rate. In this paper, the author had focused on the ways to reutilize not only daily waste but also construction waste through different ways by using them in different construction projects. Numerous research papers published in the recent years were also considered to find out the research gaps and the author further obtained information from various sources in order to perform graphical analysis to support the study. Some popular projects built using waste materials were also discussed briefly in the paper. Further, some issues and problems were also talked about in this paper.

Huge soil consumption is one of the main factors of degradation at a global level: "Soil consumption implies its fragmentation with artificial elements that constitute real barriers in terms of connectivity of the ecological network" [1]. Deciding what is meant and what should be classified as 'consumed' soil is crucial both for understanding how to detect and measure the phenomenon and for identifying strategies and actions to govern it [2]. With this in mind, the contribution intends to investigate the reasons and risks of pathological urban sprawl by evaluating new mitigation and compensation tools. In particular, NBS (Nature Based Solutions) must become key resources both to base land governance on soil protection principles and to mitigate the effects of climate change and its impacts on people, such as extreme events and heat waves, and to reduce pollution through reforestation and renaturation of the city. The "inhabited organisms" will have to orient themselves towards new rules of architecture-nature, to measure themselves against new technologies and new regulations, to find new forms of identity in relation to climate, exposure, the varied vegetation of places, landscape and culture. Every place, every space, every city will therefore have a forest that is different in shape, height, plants, etc., but also because the inhabitants who inhabit these living organisms will contribute to building it by imbuing it with their own culture and identity. How to do this will be the challenge of our century.

Switches and Crossings (S&C) are an important component of a railway track system, used to direct trains between different paths. They constitute approximately 2% of UK track, but account for 23% of annual track renewals and consume 24% of the annual track maintenance budget. One of the contributing factors is the effect of poor or variable geotechnical support from the underlying substructure (the ballast/and or underlying geology), which can lead to amplified dynamic and impact loads and voiding beneath the track. This paper presents an initial assessment of the history of track geometrical performance of two S&C suspected of underlying geotechnical issues. The initial assessment is based on historical data from the Linear Asset Decision System (LADS) of the UK railway infrastructure owner and operator Network Rail (NR), supplemented by evidence from on-track inspections. The aim is to identify features and behaviour linked to possible underlying geotechnical issues for targeted and detailed investigation, including strategic on-track monitoring. The study is based on an historically problematic junction and a recently renewed junction on the UK railway network. A qualitative assessment of the evidenced behaviour of each asset is used to identify areas of suspected voiding beneath the track. This will assist in future investigation of crossing behaviour in relation to the importance and benefits of consistent geotechnical support for optimal S&C performance.

Air leakage impacts commercial buildings' energy consumption significantly. Air leakage represents about 4 quadrillion Btu annually in the US. The other consequences of air leakages include moisture damage, lack of thermal comfort, degraded indoor air quality, and affecting the operation of mechanical ventilation systems. This study addresses the issue by demonstrating the advantages of an automated air sealing technology in a commercial building environment. The technology uses a modified blower door to pressurize and distribute the sealing aerosol to achieve the required building airtightness in an accurate, time-efficient, and cost-efficient manner. By measuring the airtightness levels post-application, we computed the building's overall energy consumption under various parameters, thereby revealing the technology's contribution to energy savings. The analysis based on energy simulation included the total energy use intensity (EUI) and separated the savings into natural gas and electricity consumption. Findings revealed that the greatest energy savings were observed in buildings in colder climates, particularly those with higher levels of air leakage and larger exposed surface areas. Energy savings of up to 41% in electricity and 81% in natural gas were found, underscoring the potential of automated air sealing in enhancing building energy efficiency.

In coastal Australia, shallow pyrite deposits (FeS2) in low-lying terrains oxidise to produce sulfuric acid that pollutes the soil and groundwater, thus adversely affecting the environment, coastal development, fisheries, and agricultural development. Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB), an underground granular filter, is a practical engineering technique that neutralises groundwater acidity. Two pilot-scale PRBs were installed in the lower Shoalhaven floodplain, NSW, Australia, to treat the acidic water using alkaline aggregates as the reactive material. However, during the treatment of contaminated groundwater, the entrapment of biomass generated by bacteria and secondary mineral precipitates within the granular matrix reduces the hydraulic conductivity and porosity of the PRB and affects its longevity. Real-time monitoring data of the field PRB and its clogging patterns along the centreline of the PRB are discussed in this paper. Clogging and armouring were non-homogeneous along the flow path, and the acid neutralisation capacity at the inlet of the PRB decreased by 31% in 15 years due to clogging, but only a 6% reduction was observed at the outlet.

Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are becoming the newgeneration of building materials to tackle the rise of energy demand as global population grows. Under irradiance, solar panels generate heat due to incomplete conversion of solar energy to electricity. Accurate BIPV thermal modelling is crucial in designing energy efficient and low maintenance cost buildings. This research project models a replica of a full-scale experimental structure located in Dubai, UAE through computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The model includes c-SI and CIGS solar panels covering the west, south and east facades of the structure, and Dubai's weather data. This validation seeks to achieve accurate representation of BIPV cladding and observe its thermal performance. The results are in agreement in one case deviating by only 0.03% and 3.17%, however the presented cases require greater refinement through a transient simulation.

Exhaust fans, or ventilating fans, are often used in industrial buildings for ventilation. In residential buildings, small ventilating fans are sometimes used in bathrooms and kitchens but are rarely used in other areas. This paper explores the potential of ventilating fans to improve thermal comfort in a bedroom of a residential building in the tropics. Experiments were conducted in the Smart Green Home Laboratory at the National University of Singapore. A single-speed ventilating fan was mounted on a 30 cm by 30 cm opening in a test room. An adjacent room next to the test room with an opening of a similar size but without a ventilating fan served as a control room. Both rooms have a dimension of 3.2 m (L) by 3.5 m (W) and 3.0 m (H). A 100-W heater was used in each room to simulate the internal heat load. Four temperature sensors were distributed in each room to measure the indoor air temperature. Experiments were conducted from 09:30 AM to 11:30 AM (morning), and from 01:45 PM to 03:45 PM (afternoon). In the morning, when the heater is turned on, the average indoor temperature in the control room increased by 0.45 degrees C/h, whereas the average indoor temperature in the test room with a ventilating fan increased by 0.22 degrees C/h. In the afternoon, the rates of increase are 0.49 degrees C/h in the control room and 0.22 degrees C/h in the test room. The results suggest that ventilating fans are effective in dispersing heat in a residential bedroom, and therefore the potential of ventilating fans is not limited to bathrooms and kitchens.

Individual slabs expand as the atmosphere temperature rises. Due to the expansion of the slab, all contraction joints are integrated between the expansion joints. Following the continuous expansion of the slabs, when the allowable range of the expansion joint is exceeded, compressive forces are generated within the integrated slab. This phenomenon is known as pavement growth. Concrete pavement expansion can result in blow-ups and other pressure-related difficulties, such as buckling and crushing at transverse cracks or joints. Furthermore, these problems cause damage to adjacent structures, such as bridge abutments, decks, and access structures in the pavement. However, available theoretical solutions and methods for evaluating pavement growth and predictions of expansion joint service life are considerably limited. As a result, the pavement growth analysis model was established in this study to predict the concrete pavement expansion. This model considered factors such as pavement structure and materials, climatic conditions, expansion joint configuration, base friction characteristics, geometric imperfection, joint rotational stiffness, and design reliability. Furthermore, the pavement growth analysis model may be used to anticipate the service life of expansion joints by taking into account the elements influencing it. Various sensitivity analyses were carried out using the created model to evaluate the factors influencing the possible concrete pavement expansion. The parameters substrate type, coefficient of thermal expansion, precipitation, and alkali-silica interaction were discovered to have a substantial effect on pavement growth.

Vibratory and impact rollers achieve deeper lift compaction than static rollers. Ground improvement with impact rollers occurs through rolling dynamic compaction, enabling compaction to significant depths, generally more than 1m. This provides the opportunity to place thick layers, potentially with a larger maximum particle size than conventional smooth drum rollers, while achieving engineering standards of density and stiffness. The overall consequence of this is that the earthworks exercise becomes a far more sustainable activity. Deeper lift compaction beyond traditional thin compacted layers using conventional heavy vibratory rollers has been achievable for some time, but to lesser depths than is possible with impact rollers. The compaction of deeper lifts at faster operating speeds, albeit, typically with a greater number of passes, requires a fresh look at specifications for infrastructure earthworks. The paper explores the green credentials of deep lift compaction, by comparing earthworks plant, productivity and fuel usage for compaction using conventional circular drum rollers with thin layers, and deeper lift compaction using vibratory and polygonal impact rollers. Quality control to greater depths can be a limiting factor. Testing protocols often require modification to accommodate the changes in layer thicknesses and material specifications.

When constructing temporary roads for disaster recovery, it is necessary to improve the ground or replace the soil with high-quality soil when the ground conditions at the site are not good. However, it may be difficult to procure and transport a sufficient quantity of high-quality soil for replacement at some sites. In addition, when using cement to improve the ground, for example, the high strength of the ground can be maintained for a long period of time, but disadvantages are also encountered with its use. A ground improved by the addition of cement cannot be restored to its original condition. Moreover, cement is relatively expensive and has a negative impact on the environment. The use of soil bags, known as "donou" in Japan, is one of the effective methods for constructing temporary roads. The advantages of soil bags are that the strength of the ground can be improved more easily and quickly without the need for heavy machinery or modification by cement, and that the damaged areas can be repaired by replacing damaged soil bags with new soil bags. Thus, a roadbed can be simply removed and rapidly restored to its original condition. The loading characteristics of soil bags arranged as a stacked structure need to be understood. In the present study, in order to evaluate the loading characteristics of soil bags, cyclic plate-loading tests were conducted to investigate the pressure transfer among the soil bags and from the soil bags to the lower roadbed layer. It was found from the experiments that the earth pressure was distributed over a wider area in the structure with the staggered stacking of the soil bags than in the structure with the flat stacking of the soil bags.
