This study introduces the design and evaluation of an essay tutoring application based on a large language model (LLM). We created an LLM-based prototype tool to provide personalized feedback, with the goal of improving students' argumentative writing and critical thinking skills, grounded in learning sciences principles (i.e., scaffolding and worked examples). We conducted user testing and interviews with participants from a large U.S.-based educational testing company and writing education experts. Overall, the participants found the system easy to use and believed it could augment human tutors' abilities. We presented nine design principles for LLM-based essay-writing tutors based on the results.

Information disorders have introduced additional challenges for democratic participation and citizenship in societies. On this phenomenon, which has received significant attention in recent times, media literacies are pointed to as a solution. Despite this, it can be said that media literacies have mostly centered on children and young people, there is an increasing research interest and discussion on older people [1, 2]. We used a qualitative approach, to better understand the relationship between older people and disinformation in Portugal. We rely on their perspectives and on the views of younger people. The data relies on two projects. Firstly, it refers to the results of a set of workshops held between March and April 2023 in the district of Porto with people aged between 61 and 77 years old. This action research project highlighted their voices, anxieties, and experiences regarding disinformation, with special emphasis on themes, practical cases, and tools. A second project focused on youth and news (YouNDigital - Youth, News and Digital Citizenship - PTDC/COM-OUT/0243/2021) shed light on how and why, in the context of datafication and algorithms, youth aged between 15 and 24 living in Portugal associate older people with episodes of disinformation. The preliminary results point to the fragility of the older in the face of these phenomena, largely justified by a lack of confidence in their abilities, as well as the frequent reference to young people as those who help them.

Complex tasks impose varying demands on performers. When task demands change, stress increases, and performers must cope with this change in stress. Previous research indicates that people generally regulate this stress by coping in three ways: focusing on the task, focusing on their emotions, or disengaging from the task [1]. With all three approaches, performers' stress will decrease;however, performance decrements typically follow with emotion-focus or avoidance strategies. Previous research identifies task-focused coping (TFC) as an adaptive stress regulation technique, whereas emotion-focused coping (EFC) and avoidance coping (AC) are maladaptive techniques for performance [2]. This distinction has implications for a wide variety of human performance contexts, as training on the task and training stress regulation techniques are two interrelated means for improving performance [3, 4]. The present work examined how learners coped with a stressful, unfamiliar, complex task and how this affected their task performance. Results suggested that higher TFC was associated with higher accuracy and higher EFC was associated with lower accuracy and slower reaction times. Further analyses indicated that EFC indirectly harms accuracy and timeliness through its influence on slower reaction times. Training interventions that address learners' poor reaction times may serve as beneficial countermeasures when learners employ maladaptive stress coping techniques. Implications of these findings for adaptive training systems and future research directions will be discussed.

This study explores the intersection of intergenerational dynamics, digital literacy, and game-based learning (GBL) within the context of older adults through a systematic literature review on Scopus, Web of science, Scopus, Bon and scienceDirect databases was conducted, employing a combination of keywords and terms, including "game-based learning", "digital literacy", "digital inclusion", "digital divide", "intergenerational", "multigenerational", "cross-generational," "older adults", "seniors", "elderly", and "elderly population". A publication date range of 2010-2023 was applied to ensure relevance. The results indicate a scarcity of research at the intersection of GBL using analogue games and intergenerational interactions aimed at improving the digital literacy of older adults and underscore the significant challenges they encounter in their quest for digital inclusion, personal autonomy, and active social engagement. Analysed studies highlight the potential of incorporating intergenerational interactions and GBL in learning contexts to enhance digital literacy among older adults.

FTX used to be the third-largest centralized exchange (CEX) in crypto space, managing over $10B in daily trading volume before its downfall. Such a giant, however, failed to avoid the fate of mania, panic, and crash. In this work, we revisit the FTX's crash by telling it as a Ponzi story. In regards to why FTX could not sustain this Ponzi game, we extract and demonstrate the three drivers of the FTX collapse, namely FTT, leverage, and diversion. The unfunctionality in each factor can iteratively magnify the impact of damages when the panic is triggered. Rooted in the unstable ground, FTX eventually suffered insolvency and rapidly crashed in Nov. 2022. The crisis of FTX is not an isolated event;it consequently results in the collapse of a chain of associated companies in the entire market. Recall this painful experience, we discuss possible paths for a way forward for both CeFi and DeFi implementations.

This study analyses and characterizes changes in features extracted from physiological signals in the presence of affective states, namely, neutral, stress, and amusement. With a focus on the stress condition, for this purpose a statistical analysiswas performed on various features extracted fromECG(electrocardiogram), EMG (electromyography), EDA (electrodermal activity), and RESP (respiration) signals from the WESAD dataset. This dataset provides data from 15 healthy participants regarding three affective conditions. Concerning the ECGfeatures, from the statistical analysis, it was possible to observe a significant decrease in the interval between consecutive R peaks, meaning that there was an increase in heart rate. The EMG signal showed a significant increase in muscle activation. Regarding the EDA, it was noticed that during the stress condition, the production of sweat increased, leading to greater skin conductivity. Lastly with respect to the RESP signal, although no significant difference was observed in regards to changes in the inspiration and expiration durations, the increase in the standard deviation leads inferring an increase in the irregularity of the breathing pattern of the participants during the stress condition.

There is a beer known as the third beer in Japan. This beer has been sold at a lower price than others due to the difference in tax rates. Taking this advantage, its sales volume continued to grow until 2020. However, the price advantage will gradually disappear, due to the increase in tax rates until 2026. It is said that third beer sales volume is going to decline. So, it is important to find purchasing factors other than price in third beers and translate them into products. This paper analyzes the customer demographics of "Honkirin," a representative third beer product, to derive factors for purchasing a third beer. Based on these findings, we will also propose ideas and promotions for new third beer products. First, we extracted questionnaire items that were relevant to purchase intention for "Honkirin" by using a t variable selection method called Boruta. Then, latent class analysis was conducted, assigning samples to six classes based on the samples' answer patterns to the selected items. After that, a chi-square test was applied for each class to identify the class which significantly contained samples with purchase intention toward "Honkirin". After testing, we examined the overall response patterns of each class and their web usage to derive the needs and behavioral features of Honkirin's potential customers. Finally, based on the findings from the analyses, we summarized product ideas and promotion methods for third beer that would survive after the loss of price advantage.

Accidents can generate significant social and economic losses with severe, harsh, and sometimes even irreparable consequences for individuals and companies. Each year the number of accidents with lost time injuries is increase. The leading causes of unsafe behaviors and, often, the resulting accidents at work are the lack of adequate knowledge and low-risk awareness. Safety signals are tools used to inform about a hazard when it cannot be eliminated. Still, even when they are present, they are often not visualized at the time of an accident. Another point to consider is the risk prevention courses which introduce individuals to existing hazards and the behavior to adopt when faced with them. However, these courses are deemed monotonous and ineffective by their audience. Technological evolution is making possible a series of improvements in the approach of these courses, which also do not imply too high economic cost. This paper approaches the use of new methodologies and technological advances as a tool to improve human behavior in risky situations. It presents a cocreation process to develop digital technologies solution for training using virtual reality and gamification to promote the correct behavior of the user in a critical condition. As main contributions, firstly, it should be noted that an immersive virtual environment has been developed to improve user behavior in a risk situation and evaluate the impacts that novel elements in signaling can have on human behavior. Also, this paper provides valorous insights for these which work with safety training.

Productive and meaningful interactions among peers are considered as a key condition of effective collaborative learning. Although previous literature illustrated that the preparation for collaborative learning can foster the process of collaborative learning, most research focused on one specific type of preparation activity's (e.g., viewing prepared handouts) impact on collaboration outcomes rather than looking at a diverse set of preparation activities' impact on the collaboration process. This study applied multimodal learning analytics techniques in a real-world collaborative learning context to explore the effects of generative preparation activities (e.g., online debate contributions) and non-generative preparation activities (e.g., viewing readings, watching pre-recorded lectures, and other learning materials) on the interactions among learners during the collaborative learning process. The results showed that generative preparation activities have more significant impact on fostering group interactions during the collaborative learning process. This highlights the value of engaging students with generative preparation activities before their collaborative learning. We conclude the paper with a discussion on the implications of these results for teaching practice in real-world collaborative learning.

The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of men who have a high intention to purchase cosmetics and approaches to increase their purchase intention. First, we examined the characteristics of men who have an intention to purchase cosmetics from the perspective of basic information such as age and family structure, as well as personality and purchasing behavior such as the RF scale and REC scale. Analysis from the perspective of basic information revealed that there were differences in the intention to purchase cosmetics by age group, but there were no significant differences in the intention to purchase cosmetics by family structure. Furthermore, analysis from the aspects of personality and purchasing behavior revealed that men who have purchase intentions tend to actively improve themselves and gather information at the time of purchase. Next, we considered how to approach people with a high intention to purchase cosmetics by dividing them into approaches through information gathering tools such as SNS and official websites, and approaches through purchasing methods such as drug stores and online shopping. For the analysis, we used a Bayesian network to visually grasp the causal relationships among the characteristics of male cosmetics users, information gathering tools, purchasingmethods, purchasing intentions, etc. As a result of the analysis, it was found that gathering information on official websites, word-of-mouth outside of SNS, and Instagram had a significant impact on cosmetic purchase intentions. It was also found that men who use drugstores and mobile online shopping have a higher intention to purchase cosmetics. These results suggest that, along with the concept of "self-improvement," launching advertisements on word-of-mouth and Instagram outside of official websites and SNS, and focusing on sales at drugstores and mobile online shopping, are more likely to lead to the purchase of cosmetics by men.
