The main purpose of this study is to establish a systematic evaluation index system and conduct research on popular science games from the perspective of user experience. Firstly, the user experience index system of popular science games is established through a comprehensive literature analysis and the application of the Delphi method, informed by thorough research into the characteristics of these games. Subsequently, relevant data from experts are collected, and the weight coefficients for each index are determined using the analytic hierarchy process. Finally, we employ the evaluation index system to assess and discuss the design of Mortise and Tenon for popular science games. This paper presents a user experience evaluation index system for popular science games comprising four dimensions: sensory experience, learning experience, interactive experience, and emotional experience, encompassing a total of 20 evaluation indexes. The research findings indicate that the learning experience and emotional experience significantly influence users' experiences with popular science games, while sensory experiences and interactive experiences assume secondary roles. The proposed evaluation index system facilitates comprehensive and systematic evaluations of popular science games, offering theoretical references for design evaluations and iterative optimization.

This paper we propose a novel method, based on a fuzzy approach, for assessing the compatibility of a set of experimentally measured notes with any theoretical tuning system. Through the exposition of three illustrative experiments, we demonstrate the potential of this method, where we calculate the average tuning distance between the music performance and the theoretical values, revealing insights into the suitability of different tuning systems for specific musical contexts, as well as the nuanced adjustments made by the musicians in response to varying musical scenarios.

This systematic literature review (SLR) examines what factors affect the perceived value of user experience (UX) in organizations. Integrating UX activities into organizational processes and software development is a widely addressed topic in the literature. However, although the social perception of the UX integration process is key for its successful execution, we do not have a concise understanding of this concept. To bridge this gap, we conducted an SLR answering two research questions: 1) What factors influence the perceived value of UX in organizations? and 2) What are the existing tools to measure or evaluate the perceived value of UX? Database search retrieved 49 publications, and we analyzed the content of 14 papers published between 2012 and 2023. The results are divided into six themes, each describing the positive and negative impacts on the perceived value of UX: understanding UX, UX resources, UX culture, perceived UX value, UX management, and UX work organization. Also, we found that the concept of the perceived value of UX is not yet developed in the HCI literature, and no tools have been developed to measure it. Therefore, further research on defining this concept is needed to understand better how social perception of UX affects its integration.

In project-based software engineering courses, development teams conformed by students explore the context and problem to address in their projects, before proposing any solution. The quality of this exploration, and the resulting output, usually make a difference on how quickly the development team identifies the goal and scope of the product to be developed. This exploration activity is usually complex and time consuming, since it requires dealing with uncertainties and misunderstandings between the development team and real or fictitious stakeholders. For that reason, the early exploration of the context and problem has been identified as a major and recurrent source of problems in software projects conducted in the industry and the academia. This paper presents an interactive visual tool that helps students explore the context and problem to address in project-based software engineering courses. The tool was used and evaluated by students from four different courses in two universities. According to the participants, the perceived usability and usefulness of the tool is high, surpassing the students' previous experiences when they used requirements engineering techniques for the same purpose.

In 2011, the authors were part of a team of researchers working on an intelligence analyst project, Heuristica, exploring the use of serious games to teach intelligence analysts to recognize cognitive biases in their own decision-making and in the decisions of those they observed, and to learn to use strategies that would mitigate those biases. In this paper we provide an analysis of the architecture and extend the design to include components built around a large language model (LLM, e.g. ChatGPT). We call the new design Heuristica II. Our analysis consists of envisioning updated components and preliminary explorations of prompt structures that can be inserted into the components of the adaptive instructional system to advance their capabilities. The updated design will take into account lessons learned from the 2011 project and beyond. These explorations reveal the capabilities of using LLMs for adaptive training but also highlight some areas requiring improvement and caution.

This paper investigates the digital transformation journey of the University of Naples Parthenope in Italy through an in-depth qualitative case study. The analysis adopts a holistic socio-technical perspective encompassing strategic, cultural, structural, human resource, and technological dimensions across the key activities of teaching, research, and operations. The study addresses a gap in current knowledge by developing an integrative digital transformation framework for universities grounded in the literature. Data collected from questionnaires about the adoption of Digital Technologies as well as innovative teaching formats revealed multi-level barriers and enablers influencing the transformation process. Key findings indicate that developing new digitally enabled models of teaching enhanced productivity and competitiveness. However, realizing the full potential of emerging technologies requires forward-thinking leadership, organizational agility, new capabilities, and a supportive culture. This study contributes original empirical insights and an actionable framework for leveraging technologies strategically to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of universities during a period of rapid digital change. This pilot study will be extended in the future by delving into the more generic role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the university process.

Leaderboards have often been shown to increase engagement and motivation in digital serious games, supporting better learning outcomes and positively affecting players' game experience. However, few studies show how the player's position on the leaderboard can be a demotivating factor and how the presence of a leaderboard can increase competition and social pressure on players to the point of hindering their game experience. In examining the relationship between a leaderboard and the player's game experience, we sought to identify the significant factors influencing whether or not a player liked the presence of a leaderboard in a digital maths game. We conducted an experimental study involving 434 Irish primary school children who participated in a 6-week digital game-based learning (DGBL) programme playing the game Seven Spells, which included a game leaderboard. Results indicated that the players' enjoyment of the leaderboard depended not only on their in-game performance (i.e. their position on the leaderboard), but also on their level of maths anxiety and how much they enjoyed different play modes such as playing versus a classmate or playing alone. These results suggest that game designers should consider the non-cognitive traits of players when deciding on the inclusion of a leaderboard in a digital maths game, in order to mitigate its potential negative effects on the players' game experience.

Internet of Things (IoT) devices have enhanced daily living, embedding technology into homes, workplaces, and personal accessories. However, this convenience is accompanied by mounting concerns over privacy erosion, due to the extensive collection and transmission of personal data by IoT devices. In this scenario, we analyze a novel challenge: the potential exploitation of IoT devices for covert lawful interceptions, circumventing existing IoT safeguards. In this paper, we define a system to clandestinely capture audio or video data from IoT devices without an IoT safeguard being able to detect it. Through a proof of concept, we demonstrate the feasibility of the solution, underscoring the need for enhanced privacy measures in the face of evolving technological threats.

DeFi has attracted legitimate investors and scammers alike. The paper presents an empirical investigation into the prevalence of rug-pulls, a scam where cryptocurrency project developers exit without fully delivering and leave investors in the wind. Using forum data, 101 rugpulls from 6 different types of DeFi services are documented. ICOs form the majority of the rugpulls, most of which were active for less than six months before scamming out. ICOs rugpulled in 2021 were active for a much longer time than those that were rugpulled later on, perhaps pointing to new entrants intending to pull the rug. Through qualitative thematic analysis, we discover that these schemes primarily use authoritative and financial lures at the announcement stage of the project to mimic legitimate projects.

To meet the growing demand for IT and cybersecurity professionals, community colleges in the United States face the challenge of enhancing workforce training within their resource constraints. Reflecting on an online Project-Based Learning (PBL) training pathway for cloud administrator jobs developed with community colleges, we acknowledge PBL's value while also noting its overheads. To explore more efficient approaches for training fundamental skills, we integrated Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) with PBL. Through curriculum analysis, we identified areas where ITS functionality could be particularly beneficial. A collaborative effort between learning scientists, subject matter experts, and instructors led to the development of an ITS tailored for essential cloud administration skills. We conducted a pilot study with six participants to preliminarily assess its efficacy. This randomized controlled trial compared ITS with a control group using reading materials and multiple-choice questions. Given the very small sample size, we interpret our results with caution. Despite these limitations, we observed a discernible improvement in post-test performance for participants using ITS compared to those in the control condition. Encouraged by these findings, we plan to expand the adoption of ITS in IT and cybersecurity workforce training at community colleges. Our goal is to facilitate a seamless transition for students from foundational training to practical application, thereby improving their technical skills and career readiness.
