Online auctions have a steadily growing market size, creating billions of US dollars in sales value every year. To ensure fairness and auditability while preserving the bidder's privacy is the main challenge of an auction scheme. At the same time, utility driven blockchain technology is picking up the pace, offering transparency and data integrity to many applications. In this paper, we present a blockchain-based first price sealed-bid auction scheme. Our scheme offers privacy and public verifiability. It can be built on any public blockchain, which is leveraged to provide transparency, data integrity, and hence auditability. The inability to double spend on a blockchain is used to prevent bid replay attacks. Moreover, our scheme can achieve non-repudiation for both bidders and the auctioneer without revealing the bids and we encapsulate this concept inside the public verification of the auction. We propose to use ElGamal encryption and Bulletproofs to construct an efficient instantiation of our scheme. We also propose to use recursive zkSNARKs to reduce the number of comparison proofs from N - 1 to 1, where N is the number of bidders.

As an important component of the teaching quality assurance system at universities, students' evaluation of teaching plays a pivotal role in implementing teaching quality monitoring. This paper first investigates the status quo of students' evaluation of teaching at universities from the perspective of student experience;then critically points out issues such as the lack of student centrality, formalism in evaluation activities, uniformity in evaluation indicators, and the inadequacy of feedback mechanisms;finally, with a focus on student learning outcomes, it provides corresponding solutions following the approach of the PDCA cycle ("Plan", "Do", "Check" and "Action"), in order to build a student-based evaluation system of teaching performance. This paper is expected to bring into full play students' evaluation in ensuring teaching quality, encourage teachers to improve teaching quality, and enhance the quality of undergraduate talent cultivation comprehensively.

The increasing use of robots for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), with the notable aim of supporting the development of social skills, prompts the question of the extent to which children with ASD interact with robots as with social agents. In the literature, resource-sharing tasks (e.g. dictator game) have already been used to study the perception of robots in typically developing children, but few studies have focused on sharing in children with ASD. 38 children aged 9 to 13 (28 typically developing children and 10 children with ASD) played the dictator game with a humanoid robot NAO and a human experimenter, in counterbalanced order. They also answered an adapted version of the Godspeed questionnaire designed to measure anthropomorphism. The results indicate that the quantity of shared resources is better predicted by the good personality score, which reflects the attribution of positive traits to the agent, than by the type of development: the higher the score, the greater the number of resources given by the participant. Contrary to our initial assumption, children with ASD tend to give fewer resources to the robot than to the human, unlike TD children who give the same amount to both agents. In the human experimenter condition, children with ASD and neurotypical children share similarly. Post-hoc analyses, however, indicate an effect of development type on good personality scores, with lower scores for ASD than neurotypical children. The attribution of positive traits to the agent could be the mediating variable between development type and sharing behavior.

This paper investigates the empirical measurement of student growth in relation to institutional learning outcomes, focusing on academic development supported through applied learning. It highlights the possibility of scaling course design to enhance learning outcomes, including self-paced remediation. The authors emphasize the importance of service-learning as a means to cultivate global citizenship and describe the potential for learning analytics to facilitate student success in other domains. This approach is tested in a public university setting and considers the unique challenges posed by its diverse student populations. The study concludes by advocating for the focused integration of ML and AI tools in education to tailor learning experiences to individual student needs in alignment with desired program outcomes.

Understanding the logic of uncertain conditionals is a key problem in the new paradigm psychology of reasoning and related fields. We investigate conjunctions of conditionals, iterated conditionals, and independence within the theory of logical operations on conditionals, where compound conditionals are suitably defined as conditional random quantities. We show how conjunctions of conditionals and conditionals which feature conditionals in the antecedent and the consequent can be rationally interpreted. In particular, we study the behavior of such objects under different logical constraints, by also considering a kind of "independence" property. Unlike alternative approaches, in our framework we avoid counterintuitive consequences, which is necessary for understanding, or improving, human and artificial rationality in general.

Stuttering, a speech disorder with far-reaching effects on communication and emotional well-being, has long posed challenges for those affected. This study introduces a novel approach to address this issue by harnessing the potential of Virtual Reality (VR)-based therapy, specifically designed for teenagers who stutter. In this paper, the overall approach underlying this innovative therapy is discussed along with the outcomes of this pilot project. By immersing participants in simulated scenarios closely resembling real-life speaking situations, we aimed to provide an innovative and engaging platform for therapy. The VR environments were designed using advanced 3D engines and VR software tools, offering a realistic and interactive experience. Participants engaged in therapy sessions equipped with VR headsets and controllers, allowing them to navigate and interact within these immersive environments. The outcomes of this pioneering study revealed a positive trend, with a significant majority of participants exhibiting a notable reduction in stuttering frequency. Beyond the quantitative improvements, participants reported that the VR-based therapy was not only effective but also intriguing and beneficial. This research showcases the potential of VR technology to transform stuttering therapy by replicating authentic speaking scenarios, thus offering a more engaging and impactful avenue for enhancing communication skills and emotional well-being among individuals who stutter. Through this innovative approach, we open new doors for addressing the multifaceted challenges of stuttering, ultimately fostering improved communication and overall quality of life for those affected.

The goal of this paper is to semi-automatically construct a bidirectional reading comprehension dialogue dataset that enables bidirectional dialogue or debate on reading passages within a dialogue-based reading comprehension tutoring system. To achieve this goal, we developed a process for semi-automatically constructing bidirectional reading comprehension dialogue dataset. Using this process, ten English experts were able to construct 2,951 datasets, with an average difficulty level of 8.24 (high school level) and an average dialogue turn count of 9.75 per passage.

Electronic cash (e-cash) systems need to satisfy the property of anonymity, unforgeability, and transparency which prevent criminal activities from abuse of anonymity. Observers proposed by Chaum et al. and Brands in the '90 s are one of the cleverest solutions, where observers deployed by the authorities to the user's device only engage in legitimate anonymous payments, but never cooperate with illegal activities. In other words, observers enforce payers' legitimate behavior while the cryptographic protocols ensure the observers do not obtain private information about individual payments. However, ever-proposed observers only prevent double-spending as legitimate behavior. There had been no contributions to extend the role of observers from only double-spend prevention to general transparency enforcement required by society without sacrificing privacy. In this paper, we propose a novel concept of open-source observers which can potentially achieve both cryptographic anonymity and highly flexible transparency at the same time. In our setting, observers are published in the cloud as open-source programs and executed within a tamper-proof device with an anonymous attested execution capability, in which all outputs of the execution, with the hash value of the executed open-source program, are signed by the secure processor as formulated by Pass et al. recently. The contribution of this paper is two-fold: (1) we first defined the concept of the open-source observers and (2) we showed a construction of Brands' type provablysecure offline electronic cash scheme with observers extending the scheme by Baldimtsi and Lysyanskaya.

The decline in violence and growing awareness of human rights can be viewed as natural experiments in history answering the question if humans are moral creatures. A dual-process approach, which assumes the intuitive and reflective systems, is adopted to examine how the reflective system controls the intuitive system, which possibly produces our cruelty. Reading a story may enhance our reflective system to suppress our cruelty. However, the power of the reflective system is weak in arousing people's action against violence. Hence, theory of mind (ToM) accompanied by emotional empathy is necessary for the suppression of cruelty. However, ToM is modular in nature and one of the subsystems of the intuitive system;hence, empathy is narrow in its focus, which possibly causes social fragmentation and political polarisation.

The Lightning Network provides almost-instant payments to its parties. In addition to direct payments requiring a shared payment channel, parties can pay each other in the form of multi-hop payments via existing channels. Such multi-hop payments rely on a 2-phase commit protocol to achieve balance security;that is, no honest intermediary party loses her coins. Unfortunately, failures or attacks in this 2-phase commit protocol can lead to coins being committed (locked) in a payment for extended periods of time (in the order of days in the worst case). During these periods, parties cannot go offline without losing funds due to their existing commitments, even if they use watchtowers. Furthermore, they cannot use the locked funds for initiating or forwarding new payments, reducing their opportunities to use their coins and earn fees. We introduce Bailout, the first protocol that allows intermediary parties in a multi-hop payment to unlock their coins before the payment completes by re-routing the payment over an alternative path. We achieve this by creating a circular payment route starting from the intermediary party in the opposite direction of the original payment. Once the circular payment is locked, both payments are canceled for the intermediary party, which frees the coins of the corresponding channels. This way, we create an alternative route for the ongoing multi-hop payment without involving the sender or receiver. The parties on the alternative path are incentivized to participate through fees. We evaluate the utility of our protocol using a real-world Lightning Network snapshot. Bailouts may fail due to insufficient balance in alternative paths used for re-routing. We find that attempts of a node to bailout typically succeed with a probability of more than 94% if at least one alternative path exists.
