Identifying and addressing areas of weakness of online learning students early on is critically important to preventminor issues from becoming major obstacles to their success. It is desirable to have a tool that allows learners to conduct personalized formative assessment on demand anytime during their course study. To minimize the cognitive load of a learner and facilitate the iterative learning process, a pedagogical strategy is to identify a singular weak skill each formative assessment and to provide adaptive feedback for remediation for the learner to close the gap between his/her current performance and the expected mastery criteria. As one gap closes, another gap may be identified afterward, renewing the formative assessment and feedback loop. For such singular weakness identification, minimizing the time spent or the number of questions on each assessment is crucial for maintaining learner engagement. On the other hand, it is also critical to ensure that the result of the assessment is reliable to provide effective feedback. To balance the accuracy and efficiency of the assessment, we propose three algorithms for fast and adaptive weakness identification based on the good arm identification (GAI) problem in multi-armed bandit-based machine learning. We evaluate the sensitivity and performance of the proposed algorithms through simulation.

Exergames are suggested to improve older adults' adherence to physical activity (PA) and thus greatly benefit their physical functions and well-being. Considering that older adults can face great challenges when mapping the input action with the exergame response, embodied metaphors have been proposed to facilitate their understanding of the gamification concept through their past bodily experiences of another activity. However, metaphorical mapping varies significantly among senior players due to individual differences and variation in technology experiences. This study therefore first carried out a focus group with four older adults to develop a variety of embodied metaphors by identifying their stereotypes of metaphorical mappings between the targeted PA movements and their past bodily experiences. Then, an online survey study was conducted among fifty-six older adults to evaluate the proposed metaphors based on their individual perceptions, including affective responses, perceived familiarity, and degrees of motion matching. This study revealed the importance of considering older adults' bodily experiences and individual preferences when designing exergames. Bodily experiences relating to every-day lives, entertainment and sports, things and animals, and childhood memories were frequently reported as embodied metaphors in the older adults' stereotypes of metaphorical mappings. The results suggest that the embodied metaphors relating to older adults' childhood games, such as rubber band skipping and shuttlecock, are the best choices to facilitate older adults' understanding of the targeted PAmovements in exergame design. Furthermore, the study identified the necessity to involve older adults in the early stage of exergame development by using various user-centered research methods.

This work proposes a novel, unified even-like semantics for Mandarin geng. Geng, literally even more, is mostly studied regarding its combination with gradable adjectives, where it triggers a comparison with an evaluative inference in the sense of [39]. To capture this effect, geng is argued by [32] a.o. to be a comparative marker with an evaluative presupposition. Intriguingly, [32] observes in passing that geng can also combine with non-gradable predicates, which remains understudied. We examine [32]'s observation in detail and propose that g`eng is an even-like particle a la [15]'s semantics for English even. This straightforwardly captures geng's combination with non-gradable predicates. Then, by adopting two independently motivated assumptions, i.e. (a) the existence of a covert comparative marker comp in Mandarin and (b) association with covert focus, our proposal is naturally extended to geng's combination with gradable adjectives. At last, geng and shenzh`i, Mandarin unmarked even, are compared from a parametric variation perspective.

Task-unrelated thoughts are a common experience for students that negatively impact learning outcomes. In the context of learning from videos, research has attempted to mitigate the impact by including interpolated testing at pauses in the video. The results of these studies are mixed and indicate that interpolated testing may not have a practical effect on reducing task-unrelated thoughts. In the present study, we aim to investigate whether writing self-explanations has a stronger effect than interpolated testing on reducing task-unrelated thoughts and improving learning outcomes. We recruited 138 participants distributed across three groups and presented them with the same video to review. The first group was the control group. The participants in the second group answered interpolated tests, and the participants in the third group wrote self-explanations at pauses in the video. All participants completed a knowledge test before and after watching the video to compare learning outcomes between groups. While previous studies have captured thought reports using probes at pre-determined intervals, we used self-caught thought reports in anticipation that participants expecting to write self-explanations would engage in metacognitive monitoring and thus become meta-aware. We found no significant difference between the groups regarding knowledge gain or meta-awareness. However, the number of thought reports written correlated positively with knowledge gain, indicating that learners who are meta-aware while learning from a video perform better on subsequent knowledge tests.

Modern civilization is being impacted by the digital revolution, which is evolving at an astounding rate. ICT are rapidly developing, widely adopted, and used by people worldwide for social networking, travel, and physical exercise. Gamified cyclotourism, which combines the concepts of ICT, tourism, and exercise, may be a technological solution that encourages the senior public to participate in the activity. It offers many advantages, including low-impact physical activity, sustainability, social and cultural interaction, and health and wellbeing. The purpose of this study is to report the development and evaluation of Gen from Jizo, an improved concept of a senior cyclotourism app entitled Jizo, following a development research methodology. Twelve senior citizens and five ICT informed individuals were involved, at different moments, in the testing and evaluation of the app and website hi-fi prototypes. Despite suggesting some changes, the results generally imply that participants thought the interfaces were easy to use, straightforward, and compliant with design and interaction standards. It is claimed that these solutions fight against social isolation, encourage consistent physical exercise, and provide enriching experiences that encourage social contact among users.

This article evaluates the effect of a policy-level intervention aimed at integrating Chromebooks into a primary school in Estonia. This study focuses on how this initiative affected teachers' motivation and teaching methods towards more technology-enhanced approaches. Findings indicate that Chromebooks were more frequently used for passive learning, suggesting challenges in adopting more complex, engaging teaching methods due to resource-intensive preparation. Regarding the motivational factors affecting teaching practices, we highlight the importance of teachers' beliefs in their success and the value of technology in promoting innovative teaching strategies. Besides suggesting a more holistic approach to technology integration to ensure successful adoption, we also suggest the exploration of additional organisational variables that may be relevant in supporting technology integration in whole-school initiatives.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the user's interaction modality choices and preferences in vehicle intelligent cockpits under different driving states. The driving state is divided into three driving scenarios: before departure, during driving, and halfway parking through a user-centered user journey approach, combining Don Norman's theory of emotional systems. Data collection is conducted using questionnaire and interview methods to produce outputs on preference frequencies and correlations. In the questionnaire, it is found that users show significant interaction preferences in different driving states. Users have the most task preferences while driving, with the interaction behavior of navigating to a destination being the most frequent. A qualitative study in the interview indicates users' modal preferences in different tasks as well as users' focus on topics. After conducting user research, a multimodal combination method has been proposed to partition the input and output modes of interaction. The findings provide targeted guidance for automakers and designers to better meet user interaction needs in different driving scenarios and enhance the user experience and safety of automotive smart cockpits.

The number of vehicles with the introduction of Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) is increasing. For this reason, it is becoming important to study the technology acceptance on how drivers can actively accept giving up some parts of the driving operation. Although there have been quite a lot of studies on consumers' purchase intention of new technologies and Technology Acceptance Models of ADAS, it is not common in the case of the purchase intention toward ADAS-equipped vehicles. This paper puts forward the concept of ADAS experience and discusses the relationship between related factors (ADAS experience, gender and age) and consumers' purchase intention of ADAS-equipped vehicles and establishes a theoretical model of consumers' purchase intention towards ADAS-equipped vehicles. The results indicate that the relationship between ADAS experience and consumers' purchase intention shows a V-shaped curve. There is a decline of purchase intention in the middle stage, and ADAS purchase intention is not completely positively correlated with consumers' ADAS experience. However, demographic characters are not highly relevant in purchase intention. These results can help automobile manufacturers seek new ways to increase sales of ADAS equipped vehicles.

Although the existing literature acknowledges the potential of learning analytics in enhancing effective learning design, it lacks evidence on how learning analytics can support learning design considering diversity in instructional conditions. This indicates that learning context plays a major role in successful implementation of learning analytics-supported learning design as different instructional conditions require customized approaches for leveraging learning analytics indicating one-size-fits-all solution is not practical. Similarly, 'inclusive learning' requires contextualized learning analytics-supported learning design to be effectively adopted by teachers and educational institutions. Addressing this research gap, this case study presents the initial findings on the customization of the previously developed learning analytics tool, "FoLA(2)" (Fellowship of the Learning Activity and Analytics), for the context of distance education. This research was conducted at the Open University of the Netherlands (OUNL) which is a Dutch distance learning university. Building on the activating distance education model of the OUNL, we conducted interviewswith teachers and analyzed different education documents of the OUNL to guide the customization of the FoLA2 tool for the specific needs and the instructional conditions of the OUNL. The results of this study can provide insights into the adoption of learning analytics-supported learning design within a distance education university that caters for learners with varying individual characteristics and learning conditions.

The EU Directive "Critical Entity Resilience" (CER Directive) has clearly indicated the need for a change of paradigm in the domain of protection and resilience enhancement of Critical Infrastructures. On the one hand, it has extended the set of Infrastructure having the right to be considered as "critical" and, accordingly must be coherently managed and protected, as it were a unique "system of systems". On the other hand, the removal of the terms "protection" and "infrastructure" to leave room for the terms "entity" and "resilience" provides further evidence that, besides a complete interdependence among the physical systems (the "infrastructure"), a considerable role and relevance are played by the stakeholders, the operators which have a critical role in infrastructure's management. The present work highlights the major issues needed to comply with the cited changes of paradigm implied in the CER Directive and the description of technological results allowing the implementation of these changes into an operational contest. The operational implementation of these strategies and technologies in Italy has been designed to be cast into a best practice, currently under further development, which might constitute a driver initiative that could be replicated in other EU Member States. An example of the capabilities of the technologies purposely realized to implement the strategy will be given.
