Smart toys combine traditional playtime with modern technologies, integrating IoT features like communication, computation, and sensing to create interactive toys that respond to their environment, offering children new options for entertainment and playful education. However, despite well-documented privacy and security shortcomings of IoT devices, there are no recent studies on the privacy and security properties of smart toys. This is critical because children are a particularly vulnerable group whose personal data merits special protection. In this paper, we therefore examine 12 smart toys available in the EU market with regard to their security, privacy, and transparency. Our main findings include widespread behavioral profiling of children via toy analytics data and a lack of transparency due to insufficient and not easily accessible information about data collection and processing.

This research explores the transformative potential of speculative design in shaping the future of fashion, with a specific focus on the concept of fashion fiction. The article analyses two case studies from Demna Gvasalia's Balenciaga fashion collections, the 2021Fall - Afterworld game film and the 2022 Spring - Clones fashion show, to demonstrate how different ways of combining narrative building, scenario design, and parallel worldviews of fashion fiction stimulate audience imagination and discussion. It also presents a comprehensive analysis of the aesthetic system and worldview of fashion design cases, shedding light on their pivotal role in envisioning and shaping the future of fashion. Furthermore, the evolving significance of clothing in fashion shows is examined, highlighting the profound influence of fashion fiction in reshaping the experiential and conceptual dimensions of fashion presentations. This study explores the capabilities of television as a tool to promote social relationships among older adults, considering that these relationships are vital for an active and healthy ageing process. Physical changes, encompassing sensory and locomotor decline, alongside cognitive deterioration, underscore the need for robust social networks to support older adults. Social relationships play a crucial role in determining the quality of life for older adults. Furthermore, television holds significance in the lives of older adults, serving as an information source and a catalyst for social interactions. Acknowledging the importance of leveraging television's potential, the ProSeniorTV system was developed. This gamified proactive system, seamlessly integrated into television, informs older adults about local events through notifications on the TV-set display and encourages active participation in those events. Through mini-games and a player ranking, the system motivates engagement to support social connections among older adults. This article presents initial results from the ongoing field trial conducted in the homes of four individuals aged between 60 and 80, with an average age of 67.5 years, over one month. Participants were given daily notifications through their television displays, encouraging them to play the minigames and access four social events. The results demonstrate that the proposed system facilitates easy access to information about social events, motivating participation and raising awareness among older adults about the importance of maintaining social relationships and ensuring an active and healthy ageing process. Specifically, on average, participants accessed half of the suggested events, and all said they gained access to information about events through the ProSeniorTV system.

This study aimed to explore the resolution strategies of multiple value conflicts in gerontological technology design, with a special focus on the integration process of self-service health screening equipment in elderly health ecosystems. By adopting the methodological framework of value-sensitive design and dilemma design, this study aims to address the conflict between autonomy, privacy, and personalization needs that older adults face when using technology products. In the literature review section, we review relevant research in the field of gerontology, with a particular focus on different ways of integrating technology into elder care. We discuss the theoretical background and practical applications of value-sensitive design, as well as methods previously used to explore and address value conflicts in technology design. For our methodology, we adopted qualitative research methods, including literature analysis and case studies. We conducted semistructured interviews and focus groups to gather the views and experiences of older people, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders. Additionally, we conducted a triangular analysis of conceptual studies, empirical studies, and technical studies to gain a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and challenges of gerontechnology design. In the findings section, we propose a value-based description model that identifies key value conflicts in gerontechnology design and provides strategies for resolving these conflicts. We carried out design practice based on the theoretical section, producing product prototypes and interfaces. Our findings indicate that integrating the perspectives and needs of different stakeholders during the design process and fully considering the values and lifestyles of older adults can effectively reconcile value conflicts, thereby increasing user acceptance and satisfaction with gerontechnology products.

Culturally responsive computing (CRC) curricula engage learners in reflections on power and identity as they build technologies. Open-design tasks, with learner-chosen goals and multiple pathways to achieving them, are common in CRC and could be enhanced using adaptive technologies. Current adaptive technologies function best in well-defined learning trajectories. However, it is unclear how to design these technologies to respond to individual learners' ideas in open-design settings. In this paper, we prototype a learning system that uses multimodal sensing, log data, and reflective dialogues to build explanatory learner models in open-design settings. We deploy our system in a 2-week summer camp with middle school girls and evaluate the system's effectiveness to understand learner goals and activities. We show the importance of multiple modalities in making inferences about learner goals and activities.

This demo paper presents a web-based learning design tool that aims to support university teachers in designing flexible learning scenarios. Its purpose is to pedagogically guide teachers in the design and decision-making process of flexible learning. The tool uses flipped learning patterns as the basis for their designs, and a scaffolding system to facilitate the adaptability of the learning designs to diverse components (digital, inclusiveness and learning regulation). The tool offers automatic recommendations during the design, based on the pattern the user selected at the beginning of the process. Specifically, three patterns are offered to guide teachers in addressing educational needs during flexible and flipped learning by providing strategies to: promote feedback exchange, enhance students' self-regulation during prior preparation, and regulate and manage student collaboration. Moreover, the system offers a playful path to guide and engage teachers throughout the learning design process and community features for teachers to see and reuse other teachers' designs shared within the platform. The tool has been designed and developed in the context of a European project and tested by 20 lecturers in five countries.

This paper explores the capabilities of the Geospatial Semantic Web to support scholars in studying the geographic knowledge included in medieval and Renaissance works. In the context of the Italian national research project IMAGO, we developed a CRM-based ontology that aligns with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OCG) GeoSPARQL standard. The ontology enables geospatial queries on the IMAGO knowledge graph. The results of these queries, as detailed in this paper, demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in representing the geospatial data and in inferring new knowledge. For example, using this approach, we are able to identify all the works that mention places in a specific region, or by combining geographic knowledge with knowledge about the literary genre of the works, we can identify authors who travelled to a particular territory, such as the Holy Land. Furthermore, combining temporal and geospatial information enables us to discover places within a particular territory mentioned in manuscripts of a specific century. These examples demonstrate the potential of the Geospatial Semantic Web approach to uncover previously hidden connections and enrich our understanding of historical and geographical data.

There are many types of automata and grammar models that have been studied in the literature, and for these models, it is common to determine whether certain problems are decidable. One problem that has been difficult to answer throughout the history of automata and formal language theory is to decide whether a given system M accepts a bounded language (whether there exist words w1,..., wk such that L(M) subset of w(1)* center dot center dot center dot w(k)*?). Boundedness was only known to be decidable for regular and context-free languages until recently when it was shown to also be decidable for finite automata and pushdown automata augmented with reversal-bounded counters, and for vector addition systems with states. However, decidability of this problem has still gone unanswered for the majority of automata/grammar models with a decidable emptiness problem that have been studied in the literature. In this paper, we develop new techniques to show that the boundedness problem is decidable for larger classes of one-way nondeterministic automata and grammar models by reducing the problem to the decidability of boundedness for simpler classes of automata. One technique involves characterizing the models in terms of multi-tape automata. We give new characterizations of finite-turn Turing machines, finiteturn Turing machines augmented with various storage structures (like a pushdown, multiple reversal-bounded counters, partially-blind counters, etc.), and simple matrix grammars. The characterizations are then used to show that the boundedness problem for these models is decidable. Another technique uses the concept of the store language of an automaton. This is used to show that the boundedness problem is decidable for pushdown automata that can "flip" their pushdown a bounded number of times. Boundedness remains decidable even if we augment this device with additional stores.

Exam anxiety is a wide spread phenomenon. Although a learner is knowledgeable and well prepared, s/he often fails in examinations due to severe panickiness. In particular oral examinations can be problematic as the testee is directly exposed to the examinant, answers are immediately evaluated, form a picture of the testee's knowledge and cannot be revised later on. This paper presents the concept and realisation of an online game that prepares learners for the situation of an oral examination. The game simulates the specific situation of an oral examination where questions of the examinant refer to the answers of the testee and try to find out what the testee's real knowledge is.
