Large Language Models (LLMs) have gained significant traction, primarily due to their potential disruptive influence across industries reliant on natural language processing. Governance stands out as one such sector. Notably, there has been a surge in research activity surrounding the implications of LLMs in deciphering complex legal corpora. This research offers substantial assistance to various stakeholders, including decision-makers, administrators, and citizens. This article focuses on the design and implementation of an LLM-based legal assistant tailored for interacting with legal resources. To achieve this, a real-world scenario has been chosen, incorporating models GPT3.5 and GPT4 as the LLMs, a well-defined legal corpus comprising European Union (EU) legislation and case law concerning the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), alongside a series of reference legal queries of varying complexity. Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) as well as agent methodologies are employed to seamlessly integrate the LLMs' functionalities with the customized dataset. The results appear to be promising, as the system managed to correctly address the majority of the legal queries, though with variable precision. Expectantly, the complexity of the queries severely impacted the quality of the outcome.

Recent research has claimed that incorporating bodily functions added to physical sensors, such as touching, smelling, and tasting will create AI that is able to classify and think based on its multisensory information. Using an apple as an example, AI recognizes an apple as a symbol, while humans recognize it based on multiple factors such as color, texture, and smell. Based on the idea that human body enables grasping the concept of things in detail, current studies have indicated that a physical body is essential for the establishment of advanced intelligence. This paper identifies differences between AI and human cognitive functions and discusses necessary means of recognizing AI. We reproduce the cognition of things by having the robot perform reinforcement learning of bipedal walking. In the experiment, the two robots reproduced object recognition by performing reinforcement learning of bipedal walking. By having virtual robots of the same mass and size as the actual robots learn to walk, we examine how their learning process, and the results differ between the robots with physical substance and simulators without it. Comparing physical and simulated robots allows us to examine the effects of robot's physicality. We determine the environmental factors (friction, vibration, etc.) that vary the learning process and results, and suggest human-like cognitive functions the robots need to acquire.

This paper presents a comprehensive study of learning assessment, delving into the concept of item difficulty and learner perception. It addresses two critical dimensions: the methodologies employed, particularly data-driven approaches, and the necessary data for this analysis. Traditional difficulty estimation methods focus on question content or student performance. Recent studies suggest using machine learning and natural language processing to predict question difficulty. These models are subject-specific and often overlook individual student differences, limiting their wider application. The work aims to examine data of real-world testing scenarii, so that assembling and building a rich and diverse dataset. It offers valuable insights into the factors influencing item difficulty by giving the maximum amount of information considering the test and the student. It presents experiments to build and train predictive machine learning models for difficulty prediction. At the end, thanks to experiments, we can show a nuanced understanding of the assessment challenge and lay the groundwork for incorporating psychological factors into difficulty estimation as a subsequent phase.

Collecting and processing data from learning-teaching settings like classrooms is costly and time-consuming for human observers. Multimodal Learning Analytics (MMLA) is an avenue to approach in-depth data from multiple streams of data and information. MMLA researchers are working towards more theory-driven development of these systems, emphasizing transparent and explainable data and the availability of these systems. This article presents a design framework for leveraging human observations to integrate learning theory when designing an MMLA system. Supported by a pilot study using indicators of participation in group work, this study shows promise in human-understandable measures and analysis in MMLA to make connections between sensor data and human observations. However, it also shows challenges in the rigid nature of automatic analysis of data accessible by sensors.

Public Data Ecosystems (PDEs) represent complex socio-technical systems crucial for optimizing data use in the public sector and outside it. Recognizing their multifaceted nature, previous research proposed a six-generation Evolutionary Model of Public Data Ecosystems (EMPDE). Designed as a result of a systematic literature review on the topic spanning three decades, this model, while theoretically robust, necessitates empirical validation to enhance its practical applicability. This study addresses this gap by validating the theoretical model through a real-life examination in five European countries - Latvia, Serbia, Czech Republic, Spain, and Poland. This empirical validation provides insights into PDEs dynamics and variations of implementations across contexts, particularly focusing on the 6th generation of forward-looking PDE generation named "Intelligent Public Data Generation" which represents a paradigm shift driven by emerging technologies such as cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Natural Language Processing tools, Generative AI, and Large Language Models with potential to contribute to both automation and augmentation of business processes within these ecosystems. By transcending their traditional status as a mere component, evolving into both an actor and a stakeholder simultaneously, these technologies catalyse innovation and progress, enhancing PDE management strategies to align with societal, regulatory, and technical imperatives in the digital era.

In this study, I analyzed the characteristics of the sound of waves that affect the psychological and physiological evaluation of the sound of waves, using EEG as a physiological evaluation index. Based on the results of this analysis, an attempt was made to create a simpler sound pattern, using electronic sounds with high reproducibility, that would have the same effect on humans as the sound of waves. In the first experiment, an impression evaluation questionnaire and EEG measurements were used to determine which sounds of waves produced the most pleasant sensations. I also considered the acoustic characteristics of the sound of waves that influence these measures;in the second experiment, based on the results of the first, I focused on the first characteristic of the sound of waves that is most effective in inducing pleasant emotions. The sound of waves is considered to consist of two major components: a sustained sound with a long period due to the push and pull of the waves, and a short sound due to the bubbles caused by the breaking waves in the sound of waves. The randomness of the rhythm and melody of the latter short sound and its relationship to the sound of waves were considered in the same way as in the first experiment.

The scarcity of green spaces, in urban environments, consists a critical challenge. There are multiple adverse effects, impacting the health and well-being of the citizens. Small scale interventions, e.g. pocket parks, is a viable solution, but comes with multiple constraints, involving the design and implementation over a specific area. In this study, we harness the capabilities of generative AI for multi-scale intervention planning, focusing on nature based solutions. By leveraging image-to-image and image inpainting algorithms, we propose a methodology to address the green space deficit in urban areas. Focusing on two alleys in Thessaloniki, where greenery is lacking, we demonstrate the efficacy of our approach in visualizing NBS interventions. Our findings underscore the transformative potential of emerging technologies in shaping the future of urban intervention planning processes.

Guiding students towards achieving the Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) of an academic module as part of a mentoring process presents a significant challenge, as it is important not only to emphasize the necessary skills, but also to consider the ongoing personal progress towards achieving a learning outcome. In addition, most educational content is presented in a 'one-size-fits-all' way, without taking into account the individual needs of students. In this paper we present a recommendation system based on Reinforcement Learning (RL) that derives its suggestions from the students' progress towards achieving the ILOs and the current relevance of the ILOs, according to the specific didactic design of the module. The taxonomy model proposed by Anderson and Krathwohl, serves as the groundwork for abstracting ILO progress, temporal relevance, and the affiliation of recommendation items. In the process of creating a recommendation pool, experts identified the mathematical concept and the taxonomy level addressed by existing e-assessments in order to identify their possible association with ILOs. The RL agent utilizes this dynamic measurement of the student's ILO progress - measured by the Bayesian knowledge tracing algorithm - to improve its recommendations, contributing to the ongoing personalisation of learning paths. In our evaluation, which utilized a test set of 129 mathematical tasks, the tested RL algorithms significantly outperformed a random baseline, underscoring the potential of this approach to enhance personalized learning within the realm of higher education mathematics.

Adaptive user feedback facilitates the delivery of personalized assistance to students struggling with self-learning and enhances their overall learning effectiveness. However, numerous studies on student behavior have revealed that they may not consistently utilize helpseeking functions. Deciding when a system should assist students during the dynamic learning process poses a challenge. We propose a new approach called Transformer4HELP, which enables the system to proactively assist students in their learning process interactions in a generative way. We employ an auto-regressive masking strategy to train a decoder-based transformer for prediction, assessing the necessity of providing help at each time step based on the likelihood that intervention may benefit the user's actions. To evaluate this approach, we used real behavioral data from students engaged in solving arithmetic mathematical problems. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, reaching an AUC of 0.84 when predicting whether the student needs help.

We adopt some basic ideas on quantum-theoretical modeling of tonal attraction and develop them further in an alternative direction. Fitting Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) to the Krumhansl-Kessler (KK) probe tone profiles for static attraction opens the possibility to investigate the underlying wave function as the stationary ground state of an anharmonic quantum oscillator with a schematic Hamiltonian involving a perturbation potential. We numerically verify the fulfilment of the associated stationary Schrodinger equation and also inspect its excited states as a solution basis for the corresponding time-dependent Schrodinger equation. With their help we calculate the temporal evolution of any initial state. As an example, we study the dynamics of transpositions of the stationary KK wave function across Regener's line of fifths. This offers potential models for dynamic tonal attraction and also for the behavior of deflected key profiles within the Hamiltonian dynamics of a given tonality. Finally, we sketch further directions of investigation within this mathemusical experimental playground.
