With the rapid development of information technology, an increasing number of student learning activities are taking place in online environments. Analyzing online learning behavior data can further improve teaching and assessment methods, enhance learning outcomes, and promote independent learning. However, it is a challenge for teachers to evaluate learning status and academic performance of each student through online learning systems. This study aimed to explore an efficient method for assessing student academic performance. A performance prediction method combined prior knowledge and deep learning models was proposed. Before putting learning behavior data into deep learning models, a weight matrix for learning behaviors was reconstructed. And the learning behavior features derived from this weight matrix along with the raw learning behavior data were imported into a custom Dense layer network. Additionally, an attention mechanism was incorporated into the model to improve model prediction accuracy. Experimental results showed that this method could effectively predict academic performance, identify high-risk students who may need assistance and improve the quality of online teaching.

Transformer-based language models have led to the investigation of various embedding and modeling techniques for several downstream natural language processing tasks. Nevertheless, the comprehensive exploration of semantic information about the label from encoder and decoder components in these tasks is yet to be fully realized. In this paper, we propose LIT, an end-to-end pipeline architecture that integrates the transformer's encoder-decoder mechanism with an additional label semantic to token classification tasks (i.e., historical named entity recognition (NER) and automatic term extraction (ATE)). Our findings demonstrate that LIT outperforms the benchmark in F1 with a maximal rise of 9.5% points in the historical NER task and 11.2% points in the ATE task for the gold standard excluding named entities.

This paper examined whether hand movements are responsible for expression in a piano performance. A player played a chord 100 times each with 12 different performance expressions, which consisted of three articulations (tenuto, heavy staccato, and light staccato) and fourlevel dynamics. The landmarks' coordinates of her right fingers, wrist, elbow, and shoulder estimated as she played the chord (12 x 100 times), judged by MediaPipe Pose and Hands, were used for machine learning training and testing. In the results for the learning model, the testing accuracy rate was 0.99. In each performance expression, F1-scores were 0.94-1.00. This suggested a relationship between performance expressions and hand movements. Moreover, when the player happened to play a different, unintended type of expression, her landmarks' coordinates were close to those when she had aimed exactly to play that type of performance expression.

We present a highly performant and scalable conversational virtual teaching assistant, Jill Watson, to enhance teaching presence in online classrooms. Jill Watson leverages the generative AI capabilities of ChatGPT and the underlying OpenAI's GPT large language models, along with dense passage retrieval and retrieval-augmented text generation to answer student questions about instructor-approved courseware anytime and anywhere. This courseware may include natural language text from textbooks, user guides, video lesson transcripts, course websites, and class syllabi. This version of Jill Watson has been deployed in several classes with close to 1300 students at the Georgia Institute of Technology as well as in two community colleges in the Technical College System of Georgia. We have found that Jill Watson enhances the positives of conversational courseware (such as answering questions and engaging in conversations anytime and anyplace) and suppresses the negatives of large language models (such as biases and hallucinations).

Teacher reflection is essential for K-12 classrooms, including effective and personalized instruction. Multimodal Learning Analytics (MMLA), integrating data from digital and physical learning environments, could support teacher reflection. Classroom data collected from sensors and TEL environments are needed to produce such analytics. These novel data collection methods pose an open challenge of how MMLA research practices can ensure alignment with teachers' needs and concerns. This study explores K-12 teachers' perceptions and preferences regarding MMLA analytics and data sharing. Through a mixed-method survey, we explore teachers' (N = 100) preferences for analytics that help them reflect on their teaching practices, their favored data collection modalities, and data-sharing preferences. Results indicate that teachers were most interested in student learning analytics and their interactions and ways of motivating students. However, they were also significantly less accepting of collecting students' audio and position data compared to such data about themselves. Finally, teachers were less willing to share data about themselves than their students. Our findings contribute ethical, practical, and pedagogical considerations of MMLA analytics for teacher reflection, informing the research practices and development of MMLA within TEL.

The notion of design thinking initiates discussions regarding its process and practices in many fields, including education. However, the design thinking process within the architectural domain and among architectural design students has not been sufficiently addressed in education and scientific research. This study explores the design thinking process of the design students while working in a conventional design studio context, further, expanding towards exploring the influences which could be made by ICT tools to the design process adopted by students. For this study, twenty-five interior design undergraduates were selected through convenient sampling technique. The students were divided into five random groups and were assigned with a design task to engage. Conventional design studio at NSBM Green University, Sri Lanka was utilized as the study context. Each study was conducted through three studio days with six hours allocated per day. Datawas collected using naturalistic observation, focus group interviews, narrative samplings, and photographs to ensure the credibility of the data by adopting multiple data collection techniques. Six phased thematic analysis was utilized for data analysis. Results have shown that ICT tools have facilitated students to start their design thinking process from Ideation. Empathizing phase was critically neglected by students as a result, and we identified it as a major problem which needs further research.

Learner engagement is essential for positive student learning experiences and outcomes. While the higher education sector has accumulated years of experience with learner engagement with conventional face-to-face instruction, it is also placing increasingly more emphasis on the combination of in-person and online teaching and learning (T&L) activities, which enhances T&L in multiple ways. Promoting and supporting learner engagement in blended learning environment is receiving greater attention and scrutiny in recent years. The rapid advancement of digital technologies has reshaped educational environments, presenting both opportunities and challenges in enhancing student engagement and communication. Despite these technological strides, a critical gap remains in facilitating effective and respectful discourse, escalated by the rise of toxic discourse. This paper introduces the Receptivity, a novel educational technology concept designed to bridge this gap through an innovative, color-coded feedback system that allows teachers and students to communicate emotional and cognitive states in real time, fostering a respectful and inclusive conversational climate. Grounded in human-centered design principles and the concept of reflexivity in student engagement, Receptivity emphasizes the importance of immediate, non-intrusive feedback mechanisms. Our methodology employs an iterative development process, incorporating direct user engagement and expert consultations to refine the app's functionalities. Preliminary testing indicates that Receptivity enhances the quality of educational discussions, promoting a more adaptive learning environment. This work contributes to the discourse on digital behavior change interventions and student engagement, offering a fresh perspective on leveraging technology to improve educational outcomes. The paper discusses the implications of Receptivity for teaching and learning practices, highlighting its potential to transform educational experiences through enhanced communication and reflexivity.

Correlations between quantum theory and music theory-specifically between principles of quantum computing and musical harmony-can lead to new understandings and new methodologies for music theorists and composers. The quantum principle of superposition is shown to be closely related to different interpretations of musical meaning. Superposition is implemented directly in the authors' simulations of quantum computing, as applied in the decision-making processes of computer-generated music composition.

Designing a good game is hard. Designing a learning game might be even harder as it requires engaging game elements to be aligned with the respective learning content. However, when this alignment is successful-referred to as intrinsic integration-games become effective tools for learning. In this article, the idea of collectible content is introduced as one way to achieve or make more pervasive use of intrinsic integration to support learning. Similar to an in-game currency system, learning content may be incorporated as in-game collectibles whose collection and manipulation are central aspects of gameplay. To substantiate the beneficial effects of collectible content, it is repeatedly presented, explored, and analyzed through various gameplay tasks. Through its characteristics of duality, consistency, and uniqueness/uniformity, collectible content evolves and adapts offering continuous opportunities for the development of conceptual understanding of the respective content-along with practice of procedures and acquisition of fact knowledge for the tasks at hand. To illustrate the idea and highlight affordances and potential impact of intrinsic integration, we present a prototype design of a fraction learning game to showcase a modular ecosystem focused on collectible content gameplay.
