The addition of the performance characteristic to an implementation is a crucial step in delivering the best results. In this matter, the current paper presents a description of a model which uses concepts related to web distribution systems in order to improve the performance and scalability of an implementation of a system that will be used in educational assessment and which generates assessment tests using genetic algorithms. The distributed systems could be used as a modality of implementing parallel operations for the genetic algorithm, such as mutation or crossover, but also for specific parts of the implementation, such as the selection process of the items within the assessment test. This paper has the aim to describe an improved model for this system, in order to be used for implementation and results.

Literacy skills underpin reading comprehension and writing ability and serve as an important way for primary school students to grasp the theme of articles and expand their horizons. Therefore, exploring the application of digital products designed to improve primary school students' literacy skills can help improve learning efficiency and promote their language development. In this study, on-site observation, questionnaire surveys, and in-depth interviews are adopted to analyze and study students' experiences in Chinese classes and their satisfaction with literacy teaching by Chinese language teachers. Additionally, the gaps in improving primary school students' literacy skills are investigated, and the characteristics of cognitive development are identified. In-depth research has been conducted on user needs using empathy maps from service design methods. Based on the observation and analysis of the Chinese character culture in classical poetry suitable for primary school students, a digital platform for literacy skills centered on classical poetry is proposed. This platform aims to organically integrate characters, words, sentences, and contexts, effectively addressing the problems of weak literacy skills and limited understanding of Chinese characters among primary school students. Furthermore, an extension is made based on Chinese characters. The semantic diversity of Chinese characters in the context of ancient poetry can be expanded;more methods can be offered to students to learn characters;their understanding of Chinese characters can be strengthened. As a result, their vocabulary can be significantly improved, their literacy skills are greatly promoted, and their learning efficiency is enhanced. At the same time, this study also aims to promote the preservation of ancient Chinese poetry culture and explore new approaches for the application of digital products designed to improve literacy skills in primary schools.

This study investigates the key factors that affect visual realism in Augmented Reality (AR) user experience. Recognizing the importance of visual realism in enhancing user engagement and integrating virtual elements into the real world, we embarked on a comprehensive exploration of these factors. Our study included an extensive literature review, identifying key parameters beyond conventional elements. A structured questionnaire was designed to systematically capture users' perceptions, involving participants from diverse backgrounds engaging with simulated AR scenarios. Our research carefully adjusted variables such as light(type, intensity, color), shadows(intensity, direction), material properties(texture, roughness), depth occlusion, field of view (FoV), gamma correction value, and high dynamic range(HDR), and categorized participants based on their experience with rendering software to ensure a targeted analysis. Our results showed that various rendering variables all played a role in influencing users' perception of visual realism in AR. Notably, among these variables, light source color and shadows direction had a relatively minor impact compared to others, while material texture and roughness had the most pronounced effects on visual realism perception. Furthermore, our results indicated that users' prior experience with rendering software had no significant influence on their judgments of visual realism. The study contributes to the understanding of factors impacting visual realism in AR, providing valuable insights for refining AR application design and development and optimizing user engagement and satisfaction.

The rapid advancement in large language models (LLMs) is reshaping education globally. LLMs, with their natural language processing capabilities, offer opportunities to analyse curriculum mapping and can aid instructional designers with structuring courses to ensure that the curriculum adheres to government requirements and that learners are offered employable skills. Despite the potential of LLM to serve as an agent for quality assurance, its capability to check if learners will receive the expected skills from a higher education context based on the curriculum description is yet to be explored. This paper proposes a novel intervention, leveraging LLMs to initiate and accelerate the curriculum mapping process within higher education. More specifically, our study compared expert reviewers' assessments with annotations from LLMs for an initial teacher education program in higher education. We found that LLMs provide comparable evaluations to experts regarding the skills learners are expected to acquire from each of the twenty six courses. The subsequent analysis revealed mixed Kappa scores for the skills under review, indicating strengths and limitations in LLM application for curriculum quality assurance. By exploring the potential synergies between experts' mappings and LLM annotations, this work highlights exciting avenues for leveraging AI in curriculum mapping and quality assurance practices for researchers and practitioners alike.

In the last two years, thanks to the advent of generative AI, new avenues are opening up in its use in the educational field, e.g. through the use of ChatGPT. But, while generative AI is opening up new avenues for both teaching and learning, there are no proposals for its use in the context of students with Dyslexia and in general for students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), that afflict between 10 and 15 percent of people worldwide. In this paper we present AI4LA, a web intelligent chatbot based on generative AI, with the aim to help dyslexic students during their learning process. This system is capable of analyzing conversational data to model students' understandings and misconceptions, thereby offering personalized educational support. Significantly, we highlight the chatbot's ability to create Concept Maps from conversations, visually representing the student's knowledge structure and progression. An evaluation of the effectiveness of the system is presented, in a realworld educational settings, based on feedback from a sample of dyslexic students. The findings suggest that our system holds great promise in revolutionizing the way dyslexic students engage with educational content, making learning more accessible, interactive, and effective.

The PRET19 project aims to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the nineteenth-century loan registers of several Parisian university libraries. These historical documents provide invaluable insights into the circulation of books and the intellectual engagement of the academic community during a transformative period. By reconstructing the relationships and trends between borrowers, the project offers a unique perspective on the intellectual landscape of Parisian universities. In this first phase, the registers come from three different university libraries and exhibit a great diversity in layout, handwriting and content, which poses significant challenges for data processing. To address these challenges, we developed a document processing workflow that effectively combines automatic handwritten text recognition (HTR) with manual processing and validation. In addition, we provide a detailed description of the database, which is designed to comprehensively model the information extracted from the registries, ensuring that the data is structured in a way that adequately responds to anticipated research requests. Once completed, the processed data will be from winter 2024 accessible via a dedicated website, providing a comprehensive digital resource for historical research.

In spite of the obstacles they face, many people living with dementia aspire to continue living independently for as long as possible. While technology cannot address all their needs, smart home systems have shown benefits for both patients and their caregivers. However, little research has explored how the recent improvements in Generative AI can re-imagine such systems. In this paper, we present SafeSpace, a smart home system designed to augment the dementia care process. By emphasizing privacy, security, personalization, accessibility, and augmentation, SafeSpace is a holistic solution with real-world feasibility. To showcase the system's design and potential, we implement an initial prototype and provide a qualitative evaluation of its flexibility and latency. We conclude by summarizing the main takeaways of SafeSpace and the key areas for future work.

Integration of digital technology in the learning environment is met with a multitude of barriers that need to be overcome prior to harnessing the complete array of potential advantages for teaching and learning. While many studies have explored the extrinsic (institutional context) and intrinsic barriers (beliefs and attitudes) from a teachers' perspective, respectively, the relationship between both is underexposed in research. In this study, data collected using an adapted version of the SELFIE questionnaire was used to cluster teachers' responses (n = 269) and identify different profiles. K-means clustering was applied, followed by a multinomial regression analysis, to explore the relationship between the clusters and demographic predictors. The results reveal three meaningful clusters that can be explained by internal drivers (engagement based on attitudes) and external drivers (perceived support). Cluster 1 shows high engagement towards using technology and is positive about support. Cluster 2 shows low engagement towards technology use and expresses mediocre support. Cluster 3 also expresses mediocre support, like the second group, however, their engagement is as high as the first. The cluster groups are associated with teachers' innovation profile, confidence, and the school they work at. Differentiating between teachers based on internal and external drivers appears relevant and is recommended as a good practice to address teachers' needs within the digital transformation of a school organization.

Scaling blockchain protocols to perform on par with the expected needs of Web3.0 has been proven to be a challenging task with almost a decade of research. In the forefront of the current solution is the idea of separating the execution of the updates encoded in a block from the ordering of blocks. In order to achieve this, a new class of protocols called rollups has emerged. Rollups have as input a total ordering of valid and invalid transactions and as output a new valid state-transition. If we study rollups from a distributed computing perspective, we uncover that rollups take as input the output of a Byzantine Atomic Broadcast (BAB) protocol and convert it to a State Machine Replication (SMR) protocol. BAB and SMR, however, are considered equivalent as far as distributed computing is concerned and a solution to one can easily be retrofitted to solve the other simply by adding/removing an execution step before the validation of the input. This "easy" step of retrofitting an atomic broadcast solution to implement an SMR has, however, been overlooked in practice. In this paper, we formalize the problem and show that after BAB is solved, traditional impossibility results for consensus no longer apply towards an SMR. Leveraging this we propose a distributed execution protocol that allows reduced execution and storage cost per executor (O(log(2)n/n)) without relaxing the network assumptions of the underlying BAB protocol and providing censorship-resistance. Finally, we propose efficient non-interactive light client constructions that leverage our efficient execution protocols and do not require any synchrony assumptions or expensive ZK-proofs.
