In this paper, we introduceQuizMaster, an innovative web-based adaptive learning system designed for conducting formative assessment on-demand anytime during students' course study. QuizMaster reduces learner time spent on assessment and accelerates formative feedback delivery. Leveraging a MultiArmed Bandit algorithm for question sequencing and feedback, it ensures intelligent assessment processes. Additionally, we employ Large Language Models to auto-generate questions, enhancing instructor productivity. When deployed, QuizMaster will serve to assess adaptive algorithms for formative assessment in realworld learning scenarios. Through our detailed analysis of the QuizMaster architecture, we demonstrate how to leverage reinforcement learning and generative intelligence in the development of systems for formative assessment.

This paper explores the extent to which ChatGPT can be used to combat visual ageism, i.e., "the social practice of visually underrepresenting older people or misrepresenting them in a prejudiced way" [1, p.164] on websites. First, insights from earlier empirical studies on visual ageism are presented to illustrate how ageist pictures can be injurious to older people and how to combat this. Then, a chat session with ChatGPT will be used to discover whether the tool can generate reliable advice on how to counter visual ageism on websites. Finally, ChatGPT's advice will be evaluated from a scientific point of view.

In this paper, we introduce a family of games called concave pro-rata games. In such a game, players place their assets into a pool, and the pool pays out some concave function of all assets placed into it. Each player then receives a pro-rata share of the payout;i.e., each player receives an amount proportional to how much they placed in the pool. Such games appear in a number of practical scenarios, including as a simplified version of batched decentralized exchanges, such as those proposed by Penumbra. We show that this game has a number of interesting properties, including a symmetric pure equilibrium that is the unique equilibrium of this game, and we prove that its price of anarchy is O(n) in the number of players. We also show some numerical results in the iterated setting which suggest that players quickly converge to an equilibrium in iterated play.

Elections where electors rank the candidates (or a subset of the candidates) in order of preference allow the collection of more information about the electors' intent. The most widely used election of this type is Instant-Runoff Voting (IRV), where candidates are eliminated one by one, until a single candidate holds the majority of the remaining ballots. Condorcet elections treat the election as a set of simultaneous decisions about each pair of candidates. The Condorcet winner is the candidate who beats all others in these pairwise contests. There are various proposals to determine a winner if no Condorcet winner exists. In this paper we show how we can efficiently audit Condorcet elections for a number of variations. We also compare the audit efficiency (how many ballots we expect to sample) of IRV and Condorcet elections.

Data re-identification methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated and can lead to disastrous data breaches. Re-identification is a key research topic for computer scientists as it can be used to reveal vulnerabilities of de-identification methods such as anonymisation or pseudonymisation. However, re-identification, even for research purposes, involves processing personal data. From this background, this paper aims to investigate whether re-identification carried out by computer scientists for research purposes can be considered GDPR-compliant. This issue is paramount to contribute to improving the state of knowledge concerning data security measures.

Programming story problems requires an understanding of the requirements of the problem statement and how to write source code that satisfies them. However, some learners are unable to write source code that meets the requirements of the problem statement. Therefore, we modeled the problem-solving process in programming story problems. The problem-solving process begins by organizing the information in the context of the problem statement, thinking through the abstract operations necessary to find a solution, and defining the solution. In this study, we propose a learning support method and develop a learning support system that follows this problem-solving process.

Due to the sheer breadth of content covered and large enrollment numbers in fundamental chemistry courses at the University of Central Florida (UCF), instructors and course designers often look for ways to accommodate a high degree of learner variability-in terms of interest, background, and content knowledge-to enhance the potential for student success. One way to accomplish this is through incorporating an adaptive instructional system (AIS), such asCanvasMastery Paths (MP), into the course design and implementation processes: a method ultimately aimed at improving student learning outcomes through the development and delivery of flexible, robustly aligned content-assessment sequences. In the current study, four (4) MP course modules on the topics of Measurements, Atomic Theory, Quantum Mechanics, and Molecular Polarity were created, with two optional surveys administered at the completion of the modules to gather insight into students' sentiments toward and perceived learning impact from MP. Overall, students felt like they had a better understanding of the course material and that MP had improved their attitude toward general chemistry.

A multi-case study with three online communities that use customized instantiations of the Integrated Learning Design Environment (ILDE) platform is presented to explore and understand how teachers' motivations to participate in OCs are related to their perceptions about incentives and features implemented in OCsupporting platforms. Datawas collected following amixed-method approach. Across-case analysis, including a correlation analysis of teachers' motivations and their perception about different incentive mechanisms, suggests that there is a relationship between these factors. Teachers' main motivation is to gain knowledge, and they perceive recommendation systems, tutorials, news sections and social features as the most interesting features to be implemented in an OC of teachers. In contrast, they consider reputation as the least important motivator, and they do not perceive features such as users' rankings or contributors' acknowledgement sections as important. These results contribute to the improvement of the supporting platforms for OC of teachers and the integration in teaching practice.

An I-shaped tile proposed in this paper is used to construct an enharmonically conformed Tonnetz space that preserves more music-theoretic information related to tonality, arguably the original purpose of a Tonnetz, than the standard parallelogram tiles currently used in the literature. The resulting tiling is monohedral, monomorphic and enantiomorphic, giving music-theoretic meaning in particular to the non-horizontal tile boundaries that cross fifths-related regions.
