Ensuring safety and proficiency in aviation requires effective training and maintenance of pilot skills. Pilots must maintain currency, implying regular flight, though some critical elements (e.g. emergency procedures) are rarely practiced in-flight. Simulator sessions are employed for safe practice and training. Simulators provide more opportunities for pilots to experience sophisticated training without safety risks and dependencies on for example weather and logistics. While human assessors currently evaluate pilot performance, a simulator can provide rich data for assessments, utilizing learning analytics for individual insights. Simulator data (and potentially aircraft data) is not regularly used yet in training to gain insights in performance. Furthermore, current training planning lacks consideration for individual needs, relying on fixed intervals and syllabi. This study aims to investigate how simulator data can be used to assess performance and if it provides valid statements about pilot performance. Thereafter, the data is used to develop a skill retention model accommodating personal differences. The research involves Chinook helicopter pilots from the Royal Netherlands Air Force, using simulator data to create tailored performance metrics for maneuvers. The ongoing study investigates the integration of simulator data into training assessments and aims to contribute valuable insights into pilot performance and skill retention. This paper presents the preliminary findings in the development of learning analytics within this context.

Serious games are designed to provide purposeful and engaging learning experiences, fostering knowledge acquisition and skills development. They hold the potential to simplify complex theories and concepts, making them easily comprehensible for learners. While the versatility and effectiveness of serious games provide immersive experiences in complex subject matter areas, such as STEM subjects, healthcare, environment science, etc., the integration of serious games into K-12 economic education, particularly for enhancing decision-making skills, remains limited. This paper proposes a work-in-progress role-play simulation serious game design with the theme of international trade designed for grades 5-8 to enact roles of producers, importers, and exporters as well as develop economic decision-making strategies. The paper begins by discussing the necessity of serious games in K-12 economic education. Next, the paper elucidates the design process employed in creating the serious game "eKinomy" and embedding the simulation and role-play elements into it. We outline the steps taken to ensure that the game aligns with the learning objectives of economic education while providing an engaging and immersive experience for learners.

Decentralized Finance (DeFi), a blockchain-based financial ecosystem, suffers from smart contract vulnerabilities that led to a loss exceeding 3.24 billion USD by April 2022 [67]. To address this, blockchain firms audit DeFi applications, a process known as DeFi auditing. Our research aims to comprehend the mechanism and efficacy of DeFi auditing. We discovered its ability to detect vulnerabilities in smart contract logic and interactivity with other DeFi entities, but also noted its limitations in communication, transparency, remedial action implementation, and in preventing certain DeFi attacks. Moreover, our interview study delved into user perceptions of DeFi auditing, unmasking gaps in awareness, usage, and trust, and offering insights to address these issues.

We introduce a computational model that quantifies melodic pitch attraction in diatonic modal folk music, extending Lerdahl's Tonal Pitch Space. The model incorporates four melodic pitch indicators: vertical embedding distance, horizontal step distance, semitone interval distance, and relative stability. Its scalability is exclusively achieved through prior mode and tonic information, eliminating the need in existing models for additional chordal context. Noteworthy contributions encompass the incorporation of empirically-driven folk music knowledge and the calculation of indicator weights. Empirical evaluation, spanning Dutch, Irish, and Spanish folk traditions across Ionian, Dorian, Mixolydian, and Aeolian modes, uncovers a robust linear relationship between melodic pitch transitions and the pitch attraction model infused with empirically-derived knowledge. Indicator weights demonstrate cross-tradition generalizability, highlighting the significance of vertical embedding distance and relative stability. In contrast, semitone and horizontal step distances assume residual and null functions, respectively.

The use of game elements in learning tasks is often motivated by the aim of utilizing their motivational capabilities. Even if game elements do not directly affect cognitive learning outcomes, they can keep learners engaged and support long-term loyalties. In this contribution, we present an investigation of the effect of game elements with a specific focus on affective and motivational aspects. In particular, we report a value-added online experiment, comparing a game-based version with a non-game-based version of an association learning task. In total, 61 participants completed the experiment. While we find comparable cognitive learning outcomes, we find medium and large differences in affective and motivational outcomes. Game elements are associated with an increase in positive affect and increased perceived competence compared to the non-game-based task. The game-based task was further perceived significantly more attractive and stimulating. Mediation models revealed that the increased cognitive cost introduced by game elements was effectively balanced by their benefits regarding motivation. The latter was partially mediated by changes in positive affect. In sum, the net cognitive outcome was the same for both tasks, but learners in the game-based condition were more positively affected, more motivated and felt more competent. Implications and future research directions are discussed.

Memorizing declarative knowledge requires repetition, which can become wearing for learners. In addition, redundant game activities, offering unbalanced challenges in relation to the player's skills, can also lead to a sense of boredom. To reduce this feeling, learning games must provide adapted and varied activities. Automated generation is one way of building such activities. This article proposes a conceptual framework for the design of activity generators for training declarative knowledge in Roguelite games. The framework has been applied in the context of the AdapTABLES project aiming at multiplication tables training.

In this paper, we present a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the state-of-the-art in Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) focusing on methodological contexts and constraints of the research landscape. To do so, we built on existing works and extended them to cover the latest research advancements in the field over the past five years. We aimed at covering all educational levels and retrieving important data regarding the planning and execution of research studies and the robustness of results. In total, we reviewed 181 papers and answered three research questions, relating to the educational context of AI use, the methodology and study design utilized in AIED research, and the type of AI algorithms and technologies used in education. Our findings suggest that research in AIED primarily focuses on formal, higher education and that there is a demand for robust and rigorous scientific evidence of the effectiveness and impact of AIED. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the most popular AI technologies currently studied are traditional AI algorithms, usually used for prediction, classification, or clustering. Based on our analysis, we discuss practical implications that can serve as inspiration and guidance for future research initiatives.

The increase of electric vehicles has exacerbated the need for adequate security measures in the electric vehicle charging ecosystem (EVCE). Integrating IT services into the electric vehicle charging infrastructure exposes it to several new attack vectors. In this paper, we apply a vulnerability analysis method to assess the current security posture of the internet-connected EVCE components. Our method is based on penetration testing principles using open-source cybersecurity search engines. Using this method, we gathered security-related information apparently associated with eight charging station vendors and three management systems, and we found 13 vulnerable technologies containing 81 vulnerabilities. Based on the information provided by vulnerability databases, we classified the threats according to the STRIDE model and analyzed the potential consequences of the vulnerabilities in terms of the security properties that can be violated.

In collaborative multi-user environments, participants must often locate and assimilate information from specific screen regions swiftly and repeatedly. This necessity can engender operational redundancies that detrimentally impact the efficacy of collaborative efforts. To address this issue, the present study conceptualizes information-seeking behaviors as screen zoom actions and devises an experimental framework wherein the zoom center and the modality of interaction serve as independent variables. The objective is to ascertain which modal of interaction facilitates the most efficient information retrieval. The findings indicate that voice commands with clearly defined semantics significantly enhance information search efficiency. Conversely, the performance of traditional keyboard_mouse inputs and rudimentary voice commands is markedly diminished. Collectively, this research delineates the interaction dynamics elicited by diverse modalities within a singular task context, thereby offering novel insights for ameliorating operational redundancies in multi-user collaborative settings.
