Within the education sector, there is growing recognition of the importance of diverse data sets in aiding strategic decisions and supporting personalized learning. To date, this call for increased and more nuanced data has been translated into institutional use of data dashboards or learning analytics dashboards. While these dashboards have been extensively developed and adopted in higher education, there is limited research investigating the use of dashboards in K-12 education. To address this gap, this study presents a systematic literature review examining dashboards as a decision-making system in K-12 settings. Our analysis indicates significant underuse of data in these dashboards, with a concerning scarcity of implementations and evaluations in real-world classroom environments. To counteract these shortcomings, we propose a set of recommendations designed to enhance dashboard development by promoting the use of Learner Profiles (LPs). These guidelines aim to support educational outcomes and student success by informing the design and deployment of fine-grained dashboards alignedwith the specific needs of K-12 education. By highlighting the current gaps and offering forward-looking recommendations, our study clarifies the present landscape and serves as a foundation for future research, with significant implications for educators, policymakers, and scholars interested in using LPs to improve student learning outcomes.

Classifying formal languages according to the expressiveness of grammars able to generate them is a fundamental problem in computational linguistics and, therefore, in the theory of computation. Furthermore, such kind of analysis can give insight into the classification of abstract algebraic structure such as groups, for example through the correspondence given by the word problem. While many such classification problems remain open, others have been settled. Recently, it was proved that n-balanced languages (i.e., whose strings contain the same number of occurrences of letters a(i) and A(i) with 1 <= i <= n) can be generated by multiple context-free grammars (MCFGs), which are one of the several slight extensions of context free grammars added to the classical Chomsky hierarchy to make the mentioned classification more precise. This paper analyses the existing proofs from the computational and the proof-theoretical point of views, systematically studying whether each proof can lead to a verified (i.e., checked by a proof assistant) algorithm parsing balanced languages via MCFGs. We conclude that none of the existing proofs is realistically suitable against this practical goal, and proceed to provide a radically new, elementary, extremely short proof for the crucial case n <= 2. A comparative analysis with respect to the existing proofs is finally performed to justify why the proposed proof is a substantial step towards concretely obtaining a verified parsing algorithm for O-2.

Instructors in computer science classes often need to decide between having students use real programming tools to provide practical experience and presenting them with simpler educational interfaces to reduce their cognitive load. Our work investigates the trade-offs between these approaches, by comparing student learning from two offerings of an introductory Python class across several community colleges in the U.S. In the first offering (N = 219), students used a real IDE (Visual Studio Code) throughout the entire course. In the second offering (N = 166), students used a simplified in-browser code editor, with no setup, for the first three modules and transitioned to Visual Studio Code in the subsequent modules. Our results showed that the second offering led to better learning than the first offering in the first three modules with the in-browser code editor. Moreover, students in both offerings performed similarly in a subsequent module in which they performed local development with Visual Studio Code, suggesting that the ability to use a real IDE was not harmed by the initial use of the in-browser code editor. In addition, we found that students in both offerings improved in their levels of self-efficacy with the course's learning objectives at the end of the class. Finally, we identified that the revisions made in the second offering benefited full-time students more than part-time students. We conclude with a discussion of the trade-offs between employing realistic programming tools and simplified coding environments, as well as suggestions for making introductory computer science classes more effective and accessible.

A Case Study Analyzing an Interdisciplinary Effort to Guide the Development and Design of a Human-Centered, Digitally Facilitated System of Care to Support Diabetes Self-management Education and Support (DSMES) in Rural Parts of Texas 1

One of the primary reasons for the higher incidences of diabetes and prediabetes in rural counties in Texas is that the people who live in them tend not to have easy access to what are known as "Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support," or DSMES programs. (A rural county in Texas has a population that numbers less than 20,000 people.) More specifically, in 153 out of 254 counties (60.3%), they have little or no access to these programs because they either do not exist in those locations as physically available initiatives, or, if they are available but are only accessible online, they require levels of broadband internet connectivity and types of computational resources that many people living in these areas do not have. Additionally, in many cases, the structure and delivery of the content that constitutes the (mostly) web-facilitated programs that rural Texans living with diabetes do have access to has not been designed or written in ways that account for the lower quality and lower levels of education prevalent among this population (compared to those who have been educated in the state's more urbanized areas). Web-facilitated, diabetes-related content that is written and presented in a manner that makes it difficult to understand for this group of users can contribute to a phenomenon known as "diabetes distress," which occurs when someone feels frustrated, defeated, or overwhelmed by having to live with diabetes, or having to care for someone who is. This problem is further exacerbated by the fact that the organizational structure, user interface design, and linguistic style and tone of many of the extant web-facilitated DSMES programs available to people living with diabetes in rural Texas do not appear to have not been informed by one or more types of user research. Liquidations in Decentralized Finance (DeFi) are both a blessing and a curse-whereas liquidations prevent lenders from capital loss, they simultaneously lead to liquidation spirals and system-wide failures. Since most lending and borrowing protocols assume liquidations are indispensable, there is an increased interest in alternative constructions that prevent immediate systemic-failure under uncertain circumstances. In this work, we introduce reversible call options, a novel financial primitive that enables the seller of a call option to terminate it before maturity. We apply reversible call options to lending in DeFi and devise Miqado, a protocol for lending platforms to replace the liquidation mechanisms. To the best of our knowledge, Miqado is the first protocol that actively mitigates liquidations to reduce the risk of liquidation spirals. Instead of selling collateral, Miqado incentivizes external entities, so-called supporters, to top-up a borrowing position and grant the borrower additional time to rescue the debt. Our simulation shows that Miqado reduces the amount of liquidated collateral by 89.82% in a worst-case scenario.

Topological spaces and their interior operators provide semantics for modal logic S4. This semantics has recently attracted an epistemic interpretation as a model of epistemic logic, on the basis of the idea that the generating of a topology from a "base" can be interpreted as the justifying of knowledge with evidence. This is called the evidence-based approach. This paper proposes an alternative approach that may be called evidence-free, in the sense that a topology or knowledge is generated from something other than a base or evidence. (We also use the algebraic, "pointless" formalism of topology, so as to more perspicuously present the structural essence of the correspondence between semantics and logic.) The new semantics provides a logic that describes the relationship between belief and a notion of justified true belief.

Amidst increasing online data sharing among organisations, there is a growing need for interoperability and trust in the digital space. When there is no infrastructure provider for sharing information (e.g. by Big Tech players and/or government-owned infrastructures), public and private actors must figure out how to reach agreements about the technical specifications and data infrastructure components to facilitate inter-organizational collaboration. This paper zooms in on the empirical phenomenon of trust frameworks emerging in practice. The main research question is twofold: (1) what are the goals actors strive for with trust frameworks and (2) which components are developed for achieving these goals? Drawing on previous literature and a case study approach, interoperability, certainty, efficiency, and security emerge as goals of trust frameworks. As for the second question, we draft an exhaustive diagram of components from both the literature and our case study. This explorative research lays the foundation for future research into trust frameworks as a major change in traditional approaches to cross-sector data exchange.

We introduce Bicorn, an optimistically efficient distributed randomness protocol with strong robustness under a dishonest majority. Bicorn is a "commit-reveal-recover" protocol. Each participant commits to a random value, which are combined to produce a random output. If any participants fail to open their commitment, recovery is possible via a single time-lock puzzle which can be solved by any party. In the optimistic case, Bicorn is a simple and efficient two-round protocol with no time-lock puzzle. In either case, Bicorn supports open, flexible participation, requires only a public bulletin board and no group-specific setup or PKI, and is guaranteed to produce random output assuming any single participant is honest. All communication and computation costs are (at most) linear in the number of participants with low concrete overhead.

The current study examines the use of literacy game performance in assessing reading comprehension skill. The goals for this study were (1) to examine the extent to which game performance can be used to predict reading comprehension skill, as estimated by standardized tests;and (2) to explore the development of student profiles using game performance, and how these profiles relate to reading test performance. The results indicate that performance on two games-games that involved vocabulary knowledge and inferencing-accounted for approximately 45% of variance in reading comprehension skill. These results suggest that game-based learning activities can serve as formative assessments of reading skill. Teachers can use such learning activities to provide their students with more frequent feedback, and themselves with a greater understanding of their students' current skills and areas for improvement.

When implementing and adopting new technologies, knowing the level of organizational readiness is crucial. By assessing the readiness levels, organizations can focus on areas with low readiness levels and prepare for the change processes. Due to the increasing vulnerabilities presented by the advancement of quantum computing technology, today's widely used cryptographic algorithms and encryption methods need to be modified with quantum-safe (QS) ones. However, organizations currently lack tools to understand the complexity of implementing and adopting QS technology, and there is no readiness assessment model available in the context of QS transition. By including different dimensions that organizations should consider when implementing and adopting QS technology, we develop an organizational readiness assessment model for QS transition. The dimensions used in the model include collaboration, governance, policy & regulation, awareness, QS solution standards, hybrid QS solutions, cryptographic agility strategies and knowledge on QS transition. While the organizational readiness assessment model with different dimensions shows the complexity involved in implementing and adopting QS technology, it acts as a guidance tool for organizations to navigate and prepare for uncertainties surrounding QS transition.
