Voting protocols seek to provide integrity and vote privacy in elections. To achieve integrity, procedures have been proposed allowing voters to verify that their vote is correctly counted- however this impacts both the user experience and privacy. In particular, vote verification can lead to vote-buying or coercion, if an attacker can obtain a proof of the cast vote. Thus, some voting protocols provide mechanisms to prevent such *** be effective, such receipt-freeness depends on voters being able to understand and use these *** this paper, we present a study with 300 participants to evaluate the voters' experience and understanding of the receipt-freeness procedures in the Selene scheme in the context of vote-buying. This is the first user study dealing with vote-buying in e-voting. While the usability and trust factors were rated low in the experiments, we found a positive correlation between trust and understanding.

Historical archives constitute a unique category of cultural artifacts, functioning as "the evidence of past activity of individuals or organizations" and a link between past and present. There has been, however, a longstanding challenge in archival public communication, due to the complex and, often, obscure nature of archival content, and its, sometimes, non-ideal condition. In the case of music archives, where music comes into play with its intangible nature, an effective experience design for public engagement becomes even more challenging. Taking into account the still unexplored potential of an experience design combining digital storytelling and guided dialogic activities for cultural heritage, we created "13 interviews", a digital storytelling experience with social interaction elements, for the music archive of Nikos Skalkottas, an important composer of the early 20th century and used it for a user study with 25 participants. The outcomes reveal the potential of the approach to spark curiosity and cultivate historical empathy for the composer and his work as well as insights on how to design for engagement with music archival content.

This study investigates methods using a global data source, Google Places, to identify culturally similar urban areas without relying on difficult-to-access data like user preferences shown through checkins. We propose and assess a simple method requiring only information about place types and their frequency in the studied areas, and a more advanced method that enhances venue categories using Scenes Theory it helps us understand the cultural significance of everyday urban life. We tested our methods in 14 cities worldwide and all US states. The results suggest that a straightforward approach based on category frequencies can highlight major cultural differences. However, the Scenes Theory-based method provides a better understanding of cultural nuances, as the ones supported by survey data.

Telegram has grown into a significant platform for news and information sharing, favored for its anonymity and minimal moderation. This openness, however, makes it vulnerable to misinformation and conspiracy theories. In this study, we explore the dynamics of conspiratorial narrative dissemination within Telegram, focusing on Italian and English landscapes. In particular, we leverage the mechanism of message forwarding within Telegram and collect two extensive datasets through snowball strategy. We adopt a network-based approach and build the Italian and English Telegram networks to reveal their respective communities. By employing topic modeling, we uncover distinct narratives and dynamics of misinformation spread. Results highlight differences between Italian and English conspiracy landscapes, with Italian discourse involving assorted conspiracy theories and alternative news sources intertwined with legitimate news sources, whereas English discourse is characterized by a more focused approach on specific narratives. Finally, we show that our methodology exhibits robustness across initial seed selections, suggesting broader applicability. This study contributes to understanding information and misinformation spread on Italian and English Telegram ecosystems through the mechanism of message forwarding.

Our study presents a multifaceted approach to enhancing user interaction and content relevance in social media platforms through a federated learning framework. We introduce personalized GPT and Context-based Social Media LLM models, utilizing federated learning for privacy and security. Four client entities receive a base GPT-2 model and locally collected social media data, with federated aggregation ensuring up-to-date model maintenance. Subsequent modules focus on categorizing user posts, computing user persona scores, and identifying relevant posts from friends' lists. A quantifying social engagement approach, coupled with matrix factorization techniques, facilitates personalized content suggestions in real time. Additionally, an adaptive feedback loop and readability score algorithm enhance the quality and relevance of content presented to users. Our system offers a comprehensive solution to content filtering and recommendation, fostering a tailored and engaging social media experience while safeguarding user privacy.

Digital signature schemes with specific properties have recently seen various real-world applications with a strong emphasis on privacy-enhancing technologies. They have been extensively used to develop anonymous credentials schemes and to achieve an even more comprehensive range of functionalities in the decentralized web. Substantial work has been done to formalize different types of signatures where an allowable set of transformations can be applied to message-signature pairs to obtain new related pairs. Most of the previous work focused on transformations with respect to the message being signed, but little has been done to study what happens when transformations apply to the signing keys. A first attempt to thoroughly formalize such aspects was carried by Derler and Slamanig (ePrint'16, Designs, Codes and Cryptography'19), followed by the more recent efforts by Backes et al. (ASIACRYPT'18) and Eaton et al. (ePrint'23). However, the literature on the topic is vast and different terminology is used across contributions, which makes it difficult to compare related works and understand the range of applications covered by a given construction. In this work, we present a unified view of signatures with randomizable keys and revisit their security properties. We focus on state-of-the-art constructions and related applications, identifying existing challenges. Our systematization allows us to highlight gaps, open questions and directions for future research on signatures with randomizable keys.

In 2019, a new education curriculum was enacted in Taiwan, where the Information Technology (IT) education curriculum was also revamped. The focus of the new curriculum is computational thinking (CT) and problem-solving through programming. To understand students' learning achievements, a new problem-solving assessment, the Chippy Challenge, was developed. Tasks in the challenge are taken from real-life scenarios, requiring students to use their problem-solving, analytical, and programming skills to solve. By analyzing the results from the Chippy Challenge, we can assess students' CT and programming skills, and offer insights into students' learning achievement. This paper examines and reports the change in students' CT and programming skills before and after the new IT curriculum went into effect. This study included 9,735 participants, comparing achievements from 4,421 students to 5,314 students from before and after the new curriculum. Research methods include independent sample t-tests to analyze the differences in students' CT and programming skills performance between the two groups. The results showed that students who went through the new curriculum had significantly better problem-solving skills compared to the other group. Furthermore, students from the urban schools performed significantly better than students from the rural schools. The results show that the new curriculum has a positive effect on students' CT and programming problem-solving skills. However, the results are also alarming in that the majority of students still have lower-than-expected achievements.

The use of digital assets in financial services introduces new and controversial challenges associated with the use of new blockchain-based technologies. To promote the mass adoption of digital assets for financial services, it is essential to standardize systems and mechanisms that enable efficient operations of service providers while mitigating associated risks. In contrast to traditional finance, the standardization of digital asset finance by standards-setting bodies has made limited progress. As an initial step towards promoting standardization in digital asset financial services, we have summarized technical, operational, and regulatory requirements that need standardization and presented the current status of standardization efforts in each requirement.

With the pervasive integration of Machine Learning (ML) focusing complex tasks across various domains, generally respective models and datasets are made available in numerous scientific repositories such as Hugging Face, GitHub for recognition and understanding within the research communities hence supporting open science initiative. However, the adaptability of these repositories is increasing among users hence raising a concern about the usability of these models and datasets effectively. Therefore, it is necessary to explore these repositories and compile comprehensive information that could facilitate users as well as repositories itself. Hugging Face, a leading repository, aims to furnish a platform that organizes and presents detailed information on models and datasets employed in research. As its adoption escalates within the research communities, the necessity to delve into such repositories becomes crucial to offer researchers valuable insights and promote efficient knowledge dissemination. This study focuses on exploring Hugging Face, particularly its machine learning models by exploiting various relevant features and the insights are presented in a Heterogeneous Information Network (HIN). Our research not only demonstrates the effectiveness of the available models on Hugging Face but also highlights potential links to relevant scholarly repositories by highlighting the significance of exploration which could contribute to the future integration of repositories, facilitating a more unified and accessible framework for scientific research.

We live in a hyper-connected world where narratives travel at lightning speed, transforming individuals into groups and groups into mobs. Recent events illustrate how narratives on social media can be weaponized and spread rapidly to sow discord. These insidious threats, aimed at influencing beliefs and behaviors, must be viewed as modern weapons of cognitive warfare. While cyber capabilities are crucial for multi-domain operations (i.e., land, sea, air), today's challenges extend beyond traditional cybersecurity to include information and influence operations targeting individuals at the micro level and groups or societies at the macro level. This study hypothesizes that narratives spread like diseases and utilizes epidemiological theories to evaluate this hypothesis. Key research questions include: Do narratives spread like contagions? Can we identify and measure which narratives are more infectious? Comparing the SIR and SEIZ models, which compartmentalize the target audience into susceptible (S), infected (I), recovered (R), and/or skeptical (Z), this study aims to model narrative diffusion and objectively measure infection rates across various narratives. Data from YouTube, a prominent social media platform in the South China Sea region, is analyzed to examine competing narratives and validate the research. Ultimately, this research aims to inform science-driven decision-making by prioritizing narratives with intervention strategies tailored to individuals in specific compartments.
