This study developed a gamification-based address promotion system and analyzed the effects of the proposed system on teaching assistants (TAs). The goal of this study is to develop a system that promotes more TAs to perform active learning support activities like proactive TAs, and to analyze the impact of the system on TAs. The proposed system is based on the game balance concept, with the first stage aimed at enabling TAs to gain experience in proactively addressing students. In the second stage, the TAs are required to perform learning support activities more proactively. Prior to introducing the proposed system for comparison, we observed the behavior of conventional TAs in a first-year programming class of a science and engineering university. Subsequently, we introduced the proposed system and analyzed the system's effect on the TAs. The results demonstrated that all TAs recognized the need to proactively address the students and actively perform learning support activities.

Mitigating tax evasion in goods and services trading operations has been one of top priorities of local governments for a long time - as they directly impact the budget available for services offered to citizens. As tax compliance mechanisms improve, however, fraud attempts also adapt and become increasingly structured to overcome them and continue to generate damage to the treasury. An increasingly recurring kind of fraud involves the use of shell companies to issue 'cold' invoices which simulate an operation that never actually takes place - and, thus, simulate revenue or reduce due tax at the time of tax assessment. This work proposes the use of machine learning - more specifically, supervised and semi-supervised learning techniques - on identifying groups of companies suspected of operating exclusively in issuing of cold invoices, allowing them to be early audited by a specialist and their operation to be interrupted as soon as possible. Through two cycles of experiments, based on different labeling possibilities, we were able to achieve relevant results - mainly in the most relevant metric, Recall - even though datasets are usually widely unbalanced when dealing with tax evasion.

As a result of inexperienced eye movements, children or students may suffer from learning disabilities or encounter difficulties playing sports. In previous studies, we have developed an eye-movement training system using an eye tracker and indexes to assess eye movement. In this study, we developed a prototype for an eye-movement training system for students in special instructional classrooms in elementary school. In particular, we developed video-creation formats and game-like interface so that students can use the system alone easily in special instructional classrooms. The results of the field evaluation demonstrated the system's effectiveness in elementary school.

Most aviation assistance systems do not take into account the pilot's actual cognitive state when providing assistance. Yet, especially in critical situations such as aircraft takeoff, it is important to determine whether the information presented has been correctly processed and understood by the pilot, or whether some has been omitted or misinterpreted. This paper presents a cognitive synthetic pilot based on the ACT-R cognitive architecture and integrating a reference ontology of standard piloting procedures as a knowledge base. The main purpose is to serve as a coaching system for training pilots in simulation environments to perform critical piloting tasks such as takeoff, by exploiting the advantages of a rich semantic representation of the aeronautical context. In this way, the ontology formally models the expert piloting procedures that will be used by the synthetic pilot to advise an trainee pilots during training sessions. For this, we use two types of ontologies to model the pilot's work: a task ontology describing all the actions the pilot must perform, and a domain ontology containing knowledge about the execution environment. The synthetic pilot uses semantic rules and a reasoner for task automation. The rules define when a task can be executed. The reasoner analyzes these rules and the context to decide which actions to execute. Over time, the actions to be executed are presented in the form of a complex dynamic 3D graph, thus allowing better visualization of the tasks to be performed and intelligent automation of the flight procedures described in the ontological reference model to assist the pilot. This work is an intermediate step towards the implementation of a complete cognitive assistance for novice pilots in a simulation environment. The ultimate goal is to extend the capabilities of the synthetic pilot through machine learning, by analyzing real flight data to extract typical pilot behavioral profiles.

The variation in E-participation adoption and obstruction among non-democratic regimes is not sufficiently understood in earlier research. We attribute this to a lack of conceptual instruments for systematically studying the regime attributes of non-democratic states. Inspired by the work of Linz and Stepan (1), we demonstrate how a more fine-grained and multi-dimensional taxonomy of non-democratic regimes could differentiate between regime behaviours. Based on this categorisation, we further formulate expectations regarding four dimensions of E-participation in different types of non-democratic regimes. We argue that the proposed regime categorisation and identified expectations can form a basis for more nuanced comparative research on E-participation in non-democratic states.

Habits refer to behaviors that occur repetitively. As ICT tools spread widely in learners' school lives, the Learning Analytics (LA) techniques enable researchers to monitor learners' daily activities and understand their habitual behaviors via fine-grained analysis of the log data that traces one's actions in digital environments. While types of learning habits were commonly evaluated with academic performance, little evaluation focused on whether the existing habit types involve high learning productivity. Therefore, this study evaluates the productivity of habit types using effective time management factors, including effectiveness, efficiency, and effortlessness. We collected learning logs from 114 learners at the age of 15 on average in a Japanese junior high school. Specifically, we analyzed their self-directed learning of doing math exercises from Apr. 2022 to Feb. 2023. The findings strengthen the importance of teaching and learning process through a better time management strategy in terms of building learning habits, where many students face difficulties. As the implications of this study, we could support learners in time awareness and time adjusting by recommending an appropriate type of learning habits considering its productivity. Hence, the regular scheduling of learning activities can not only improve the learning productivity of learners but also cultivate skills of self-directed learning with effective time management.

Polariscope is an R&D project resulting from a consortium between the academia and a municipal historical archive. The project is focused on developing a participatory digital experience of cultural archives and events from multiple perspectives using collaborative storytelling to share, visualize and co-create collective memories. Designed as an online community that gathers contributions from citizens and institutions, the platform intends to promote rich digital experiences through interactive and narrative visualizations around meaningful cultural events and heritage data, presenting multimedia visualizations built from archives and testimonies shared by people. The methodological approach of the project adopts a User-Centered Design (UCD) iterative process comprising four phases: 1) Literature review and related work;2) User research and functional requirements specification;3) Laboratory evaluation of a medium-fidelity prototype with users;4) Pilot case studies in field trials related to cultural events. This paper is focused on presenting phases 1 and 2, which are dedicated to the definition and ideation of the digital experience proposed by the platform, validated by an empirical study using focus groups with experts. In overall, the results allowed the validation of the functional requirements, and the identification of the expected features and interaction patterns related to the processes of content contribution, validation, discovery, and curation to include in the next iteration of the prototype to be tested with users.

Serious Games (SGs) are versatile tools that entertain while addressing serious issues through digital or analog gameplay. However, ensuring continuous supervision during gameplay can be challenging. To overcome this, we propose a flexible scoring system that automates procedure evaluation, empowering learners and promoting independent skill development. By conceptualizing procedures as ordered actions with specific information, our approach enriches the learning experience, making SGs more effective educational instruments. This research advances SGs, allowing students to take control of their learning journey and improving information retention through practical experiences. With this innovative scoring mechanism, SGs hold the promise of becoming even more impactful in addressing critical educational challenges.
