This paper takes a system approach to implementation of future health and welfare technology aiming at prolonging independent life. A study was conducted where different relevant stakeholders such as older adults, care staff, managers, and decision makers were interviewed about their visions and attitudes towards the use of technology in a future context. Further, the paper elaborates on how information design can contribute to the understanding of different needs and how it can be applied in the development of health and welfare technology that empowers future older adults and contribute to a prolonged independent life. Finally, communication and interaction design are discussed in relationship to the usage of future health and welfare technology.

This research paper explores to what extent large language models (LLMs) can generate line-by-line explanations of code examples used in intro-to-programming courses such as CS1 (computer science) and CS2. While it is known that LLMs can generate code explanations, a systematic analysis of those explanations and their appropriateness for instructional and learning purposes is needed, which is the goal of this paper. Specifically, the paper explores how different types of prompts impact the nature and quality of line-by-line explanations relative to human expert explanations. We report a quantitative and qualitative analysis that compares AI-generated explanations with explanations produced by human experts. Furthermore, we investigate to what degree LLM can generate explanations for learners of various levels of mastery.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, digital technologies have enabled work, education, community activity, and access to healthcare to be situated within our homes. These emerging applications call for a renewed focus on the geographies of online privacy. Thus, this research aims to explore the geographies of digitally-mediated privacy practices at home during the COVID-19 lockdown through the method of qualitative in-depth interviews with the lay-users of the Internet. Using Social Practice Theory, the paper explores contextual, collective and spatial dimensions of privacy. In particular, the paper explores how increased use of digital technologies at home during the COVID-19 lockdown has reconfigured practices of self-disclosure, data-sharing and protection of private spaces. First, the paper argues that the use of new work tools, the re-purposing of work tools for social means, and the use of personal devices for work functions, have all affected people's ability to maintain boundaries between their work and personal lives. Second, the paper uncovers how public health concerns during the pandemic mobilised the collective dimensions of privacy, countering the popular belief that privacy is an individualistic concern. Taken together, these findings point at reorienting digital geographies of privacy towards the people and spaces 'behind' the screen.

LLMs trained in the understanding of programming syntax are now providing effective assistance to developers and are being used in programming education such as in generation of coding problem examples or providing code explanations. A key aspect of programming education is understanding and dealing with error message. However, 'logical errors' in which the program operates against the programmer's intentions do not receive error messages from the compiler. In this study, building on existing research on programming errors, we first define the types of logical errors that can occur in programming in general. Based on the definition, we propose an effective approach for detecting logical errors with LLMs that makes use of relations among error types in the Chain-of-Thought and Tree-of-Thought prompts. The experimental results indicate that when such logical error descriptions in the prompt are used, the average classification performance is about 21% higher than the ones without them. We also conducted an experiment for exploiting the relations among errors in generating a new logical error dataset using LLMs. As there is very limited dataset for logical errors such benchmark dataset can be very useful for various programming related applications. We expect that our work can assist novice programmers in identifying the causes of code errors and correct them more effectively.

Rapid advancement of extended reality (XR) poses new challenges in the design and implementation of technologies, methods, and curriculums for medical training and education. Particularly, a paucity of research lies in XR-based learning approach to a group of learners: How can we ensure that collaborative team experiences in simulation will transfer to actual patient care? In this regard, we aim to conceptualize newchallenges of team learning in XR for next-generation medical education. Contrary to part-task simulation, teamwork involves complex group dynamics for aggregated performance and thus a referent world-model essential for building simulation is not simple to derive. Imagine, for example, the many possible ways that a group of physicians and nurses may collaborate to treat a severely asthmatic patient in diverse clinical settings. To this end, we adopted the abstraction hierarchy to conceptualize an array of issues related to complex team interactions in XR-based professional education and training. As results of this representation, we identified the complex means-end relationships and couplings that exist among goals, functional interactions, and technological elements that altogether allow for team collaboration in XR. Discussions focused on key challenges and frictions within this web of interdependence.

Virtual patients (VPs) are found to be efficient tools for building diagnostic competence and clinical reasoning in medical students. Here, we present an approach that includes additional game elements, namely counters that keep track of various costs of the diagnostic decisions. The initial pilot studies show unanimous acceptance of the platform as a learning tool among medical students with varying degrees of prior knowledge. In qualitative interviews, students refer to the counters as "good reflection," "increasing the feeling of responsibility" and evaluated it as an incentive for intense group discussion. This has shown to be helpful in designing instructional tools to foster medical education, also allowing medicine instructors to create their own VP environments and patient cases, tune the respective instructional design, and launch VPs for specific learning purposes.

The demand for added value in small household appliances gradually increased. However, existing theoretical design methods often struggled to achieve satisfactory results in the practical design of small household appliances. Sensitivity engineering (KE), by deeply understanding user perceptions, preferences, and emotions, incorporated these factors into design decisions, aiming to improve the quality and user satisfaction of products or services. Its core idea was to consider human emotions and intuitions in technical development and design. This study explored the effectiveness of integrating KE with iterativeprototype design in the context of small household appliance design methodologies. In the first phase, we explored user consumption trends and preferences for small household appliances and reviewed academic papers on the application of KE in product design. We proposed an innovative design theoretical model to meet user demands for in small household appliances. In the second phase, we employed case validation, applying the methodological model that integrated KE with iterative prototype design to the design of a humidifier, and received positive feedback. This research demonstrated the rationale of incorporating prototype design iteration methods into KE and provided valuable insights for the design and development of small household appliances.

This study explores the effectiveness of Large Language Models (LLMs) for Automatic Question Generation in educational settings. Three LLMs are compared in their ability to create questions from university slide text without fine-tuning. Questions were obtained in a two-step pipeline: first, answer phrases were extracted from slides using Llama 2-Chat 13B;then, the three models generated questions for each answer. To analyze whether the questions would be suitable in educational applications for students, a survey was conducted with 46 students who evaluated a total of 246 questions across five metrics: clarity, relevance, difficulty, slide relation, and question-answer alignment. Results indicate that GPT-3.5 and Llama 2-Chat 13B outperform Flan T5 XXL by a small margin, particularly in terms of clarity and question-answer alignment. GPT-3.5 especially excels at tailoring questions to match the input answers. The contribution of this research is the analysis of the capacity of LLMs for Automatic Question Generation in education.

This study focuses on promoting inclusive spaces specifically designed to support People with Disabilities (PwD). These spaces play a crucial role in providing services and digital resources that enable these people to increase their autonomy, independence, accessibility, communication, and quality of life. The overall impact of these spaces depends largely on proper dissemination. It is therefore of the highest importance to design and implement effective promotion strategies to ensure that PwD are aware of the existence of these spaces and have the necessary information to access them. In this qualitative study 16 interviews with representatives of different disability-inclusive spaces in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, namely Angola, Brazil, and Portugal are analyzed. The main objective was to identifying and understanding the gaps and challenges in promoting inclusive spaces. The study's findings reveal that participants recognize the importance of implementing communication strategies, but various obstacles often limit their implementation. These challenges include lack of strategic planning, limited time and financial resources, operational capacity constraints, reluctance to join communication channels, and lack of communication skills. Recognizing these challenges and gaps enables the implementation of significant improvements in the promotion of inclusive spaces and empowers teams in these and other types of spaces and communities. This will make it possible to adapt communication strategies informally, optimizing their dissemination process and effectively promoting inclusion.

In Serious Games, in particular in learning and training games, the assessment of competencies and skills is crucial for monitoring learning progress, tailoring learning experiences, and providing individual formative feedback. A sound psychometric diagnostic of competencies is not trivial, however. Conventional scoring techniques have severe shortcomings in terms of accuracy and the degree to which actionable information can be drawn from them. In this paper we introduce Cognitive Diagnostic Models and in particular Competence-based Knowledge Space Theory as theoretical underpinnings of in-game competence assessments. We exemplify the approach by a gamified mathematics learning scenario named Mathiade and illustrate the steps of developing, implementing, and evaluating competence models.
