This book celebrates Professor Mathukumalli Vidyasagar’s outstanding achievements in systems, control, robotics, statistical learning, computational biology, and allied areas. The contributions in the book summarize the content of invited lectures given at the workshop “Emerging Applications of control and Systems Theory” (EACST17) held at the University of Texas at Dallas in late September 2017 in honor of Professor Vidyasagar’s seventieth birthday. These contributions are the work of twenty-eight distinguished speakers from eight countries and are related to Professor Vidyasagar’s areas of research. This book introduces, presents, and illustrates, the theory of control for systems governed by ordinary differential equations, with special references to the two-dimensional case. These systems are continuous, finite-dimensional, deterministic, with a priori bounds on the admissible controls. Its form is that of a graduate-level textbook, involving motivation, a rather elementary level of exposition, illustrative examples, and extensive problem sections. It is addressed to applied mathematicians and engineers (system, control, electrical, mechanical, chemical) who wish to acquire further mathematical background in order to treat the subject they already know is both fascinating and important. Hopefully, it might also serve those whose interest is in modeling, bio-mathematics, and economics. The special feature of this book is the focused study, in the second part, of control systems whose state space is the phase plane. As with differential equations, where specialisation to the plane provides a far richer theory (the classical results of Poincaré and Bendixson), control theory of two-dimensional systems also has more intuitive and deeper results.

Automotive control has developed over the decades from an auxiliary te- nology to a key element without which the actual performances, emission, safety and consumption targets could not be met. Accordingly, automotive control has been increasing its authority and responsibility – at the price of complexity and di?cult tuning. The progressive evolution has been mainly ledby speci?capplicationsandshorttermtargets,withthe consequencethat automotive control is to a very large extent more heuristic than systematic. Product requirements are still increasing and new challenges are coming from potentially huge markets like India and China, and against this ba- ground there is wide consensus both in the industry and academia that the current state is not satisfactory. Model-based control could be an approach to improve performance while reducing development and tuning times and possibly costs. Model predictive control is a kind of model-based control design approach which has experienced a growing success since the middle of the 1980s for “slow” complex plants, in particular of the chemical and process industry. In the last decades, severaldevelopments haveallowedusing these methods also for “fast”systemsandthis hassupporteda growinginterestinitsusealsofor automotive applications, with several promising results reported. Still there is no consensus on whether model predictive control with its high requi- ments on model quality and on computational power is a sensible choice for automotive control.

In this monograph, new structures of neural networks in multidimensional domains are introduced. These architectures are a generalization of the Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) in Complex, Vectorial and Hypercomplex algebra. The approximation capabilities of these networks and their learning algorithms are discussed in a multidimensional context. The work includes the theoretical basis to address the properties of such structures and the advantages introduced in system modelling, function approximation and control. The unified theme of this book is the use of dynamic programming in order to simplify and decompose required computations for the optimal control of bilinear-quadratic systems. There are numerous examples of bilinear control systems that provide great challenges to engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists: these include nuclear reactors, missile intercept problems and mechanical brake systems. The book also examines two special classes of bilinear-quadratic control problems: namely singularly perturbed and weakly coupled bilinear control systems. Infinite-Dimensional Systems". The aim was to bring together
engineers and mathematicians working in the field of linear
infinite-dimensional systems who are specialists in one or
more of the following categories of mathematical approaches:
semigroup approches,p.d.e. approaches, frequency domain
approaches and syntheses of state-space and frequency domain
approaches. Since these approaches use very different
sophisticated mathematical techniques, it is unusual for a
scientist to be expert in all of them. On the other hand,
there different approaches all purport to address the same
control problems for the same classes of linear
infinite-dimensional systems. It is therefore important to
compare and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of
these different mathematical techniques. To help ameliorate
the communication gab a series of introductory tutorial
lectures were given by specialists in the above-mentioned
fields. There were complemented by some key survey papers on
more recent research, as well as by papers representing
original research in these areas.
