The true values of the physical parameters may differ from the assumed values.;addresses stability problems for linear systems with parametric uncertainty. The application of convexity techniques leads to new computationally tractable stability criteria for families of characteristic functions with nonlinear dependence on the parameters. Stability results as well as stability criteria for time-delay systems with uncertainties in coefficients and delays are reported.

Research in discrete systems is expanding rapidly, and specialized languages are proliferating. This book is a remarkable attempt to bring together researchers from a diverse range of application areas. This is the proceeding of a workshop on Discrete Event Systems Models. The 30 participants included researchers working in communication networks, manufacturing, digital signal processing, Markov decision theory, and automatic control. The purpose of the workshop was to establish the common features of the mathematical models, techniques and goals pursued in these diverse areas. The papers demonstrate that there is a large common core underlying these efforts, that researchers in one area can benefit from advances in other areas of discrete systems, and that it is not difficult to translate results expressed in one discrete event formation into another. The papers cover formal description methods, logical verification, simulation, performance evaluation, and optimization. Techniques covered include finite state machines, Petri nets, communicating sequential processes, queuing analysis, and perturbation analysis.

In October 1994, 22 organisations throughout Europe accepted a challenge to solve a specific robust flight control design problem. The results of that design challenge, presented at the GARTEUR Specialists' Workshop in Toulouse, France in April 1997, are reported here. Two flight control benchmarks are considered, based on the automatic landing phase of a large cargo aircraft and on the control of a military aircraft. Methods applied include: classical control; multi-objective optimisation; eigenstructure assignment; modal multi-model approach; LQ, Lyapunov and H¿-techniques; ¿-synthesis; nonlinear dynamic inversion; robust inverse dynamics estimation; model predictive control and following; and fuzzy control. Involved in the definition of the benchmarks and the evaluation process have been representatives from the European aeronautical industry, bringing a strong link with flight control law design practice.

This book investigates the performance limitation issues in networked feedback systems. The fact that networked feedback systems consist of control and communication devices and systems calls for the integration of control theory and information theory. The primary contributions of this book lie in two aspects: the newly-proposed information-theoretic measures and the newly-discovered control performance limitations. We first propose a number of information notions to facilitate the analysis. Using those notions, classes of performance limitations of networked feedback systems, as well as state estimation systems, are then investigated. In general, the book presents a unique, cohesive treatment of performance limitation issues of networked feedback systems via an information-theoretic approach. This book is believed to be the first to treat the aforementioned subjects systematically and in a unified manner, offering a unique perspective differing from existing books.

We focus in particular on the problem of the existence of Liapunov functions (converse Liapunov theorems) and their regularity, whose interest is especially motivated by applications to automatic control (boundedness of state evolution with respect to bounded inputs, stabilization by feedback). objects. As well, most imaging systems inherently perform a
positioning function. Positioning systems can be applied
in various forms of transport such as general and space
aviation or automobiles, but also in geodetic surveying.
The aim of this monograph is to establish a general method
for the mathematical analysis of positioning systems and to
demonstrate the utility of this characterization. The basic
approach uses information theory, differential geometry,
rate distortion theory and chaos, as well as integrating the
more conventional methods of analysis based on estimation
and detection theory. This approach allows the derivation
of performance limits,estimates of optimal configuration,
reasoning about classes of systems, direct comparison
between positioning and communication systems, and estimates
of the source information rate of moving objects. The book
should be of interest to any researcher seeking to gain a
better understanding of a positioning or imaging system.
