From the mid-nineteenth century, a fragmented landscape of formal colonies, such as Hong Kong, and other structures of foreign influence, such as the International Settlement in Shanghai, spread over parts of Chinese soil. This colonial patchwork encompassed centres of transcultural encounters, translation, publishing, and commerce, and it also brought forth a vibrant strata of cultural intermediaries, such as translators, teachers, and journalists. Among these were social actors who employed cartography as a means to communicate knowledge about the world around them. Thus, while the outside world was gaining spheres of influence on Chinese soil, certain members of the Chinese elite turned their attention towards distant lands and created world maps and atlases. Based on cartographic visualizations from the mid to the late nineteenth century, this study explores a view from inside a country that was partially exposed to colonial influences. It looks at the impact of the colonial condition on individual Chinese mapmakers and the topics that they deemed important when presenting the world outside of China to their fellow countrymen.

Over the past years, the usage of electric bikes has emerged. E-bikes are suitable for short and medium distance trips. Therefore, the Dutch government promotes using e-bikes for daily commuting trips. However, the impact of increasing demand on the cycling infrastructure is unclear. Additionally, route choice models for e-bikes are limited. This paper estimates a route choice model for e-bike users in the Noord-Brabant region of The Netherlands. The data used are based on 17626 trips from 742 users including user profiles extracted from GPS data. In order to analyze the data, a mixed logit model is applied on the route choice of respondents with addition of the path-size attribute. Mixed logit model allows a panel data setup and enables the examination of preference heterogeneity around the mean of distance attribute. Moreover, the path-size attribute is included on the model to account for the overlap between alternatives. Socio-demographic characteristics and trip-related factors are found to be influencing on the route choice decisions of e-bike and bike users. There are differences on the significance of variables between e-bike and bike users.

The British Empire achieved its greatest cartographical reach during the interwar period. It was therefore forced to deal with unprecedented strains, as its already bulging territories led to an increased need for securing borders. Along with anxieties about the Afghan border on the North-West Frontier of India, there were growing tensions in the virtually unmapped colonies in Africa, Mesopotamia and East Persia. A critical knowledge of the history, aims and the organization of the Survey of India, reduced to the 'Department', in the 1920s, are crucial for understanding its complex role. The SOI's mapping policy changed drastically, moving from the desire to have artistic excellence to correct, minimalistic up-to-date small-scale maps. This paper would like to show how the Empire's mapping policy laid the foundations of urban and thematic mapping in India, as well as its modern boundaries. Against the backdrop of World War II, it became imperative for the Empire to follow a constructive policy of balancing and achieving what was technically desirable, against what was economically viable. Essential geodetic foundations of topographical survey work had been laid in the past, but any future surveys would have to be dealt with differently, keeping in mind the background of these changes in conditions, needs and methods of survey.

As part of its global military mapping project, the Soviet Union produced maps of many parts of the world at several scales from 1:1,000,000 to 1:5000. These include general maps designed for military planning and terrain evaluation and highly detailed street plans of towns and cities, including Oxford. The Soviet 1:10,000 plan of the city was compiled, designed and printed in secrecy within the Soviet Union during 1972-1973. It reveals that a high level of information was collected about the location and function of buildings, from the Morris Motors and Pressed Steel Fisher factories at Cowley to Oxford Prison and the Central Post Office in the city centre. Anomalies include the omission of Marston Ferry Road (which opened in 1971) and the inclusion of the two gas holders at St Ebbe's (which were demolished in 1968). Further afield, the depiction of RAF Upper Heyford on the Soviet 1:50,000 topographic map of 1981 includes details not shown on contemporaneous Ordnance Survey maps. Focusing on the Soviet mapping of Oxford and its vicinity, this chapter provides some new insights into the global project and reflects upon the achievements, methods and supposed purpose of this unprecedented cartographic enterprise.

Toponymic inscriptions are an 'authorized version' of history written on space. This article aims to explore the toponyms on a French map of Beirut published in 1936 to show how France, as a sovereign power, transformed her 'Lebanese policy' into place names and thus created a different reality, in rupture with the past. This reality still endures today on the map. The new polity was created under the mission protectrice of France. The 'mission' is read on the map through the names of Gouraud, Foch, Petain, and other generals of World War I, and by key features of the French Republic ('The Marseillaise', 'the French', 'Paris', and so on). With Lebanon being a 'refuge for minorities', the 1936 map of Beirut has thoroughfares named after saints, ulemas, and religious figures of Christians and of Muslims ('rue patriarche Hoyek', 'rue Ibn Arabi', and 'rue Abou Bakr'). In 1918, political martyrdom was introduced to political discourse, but also to the map;thus the main square of the city is renamed 'Place des Martyrs', with numerous streets named after intellectuals hanged by the Ottomans and considered martyrs of the new Republic. These three 'toponymic systems' are in discontinuity with the toponymic past of Beirut. These toponymic dynamics still shape the map of Beirut;no constitution change or 'toponymic cleansing' happened after Independence in 1943. There are more 'martyrs' and religious figures added to the map and mandate army generals are still commemorated. Mandate-made maps continue to shape Beiruti place names today.

Recent years have witnessed a rapid increase in Question Answering (QA) research and products in both academic and industry. However, geographic question answering remained nearly untouched although geographic questions account for a substantial part of daily communication. Compared to general QA systems, geographic QA has its own uniqueness, one of which can be seen during the process of handling unanswerable questions. Since users typically focus on the geographic constraints when they ask questions, if the question is unanswerable based on the knowledge base used by a QA system, users should be provided with a relaxed query which takes distance decay into account during the query relaxation and rewriting process. In this work, we present a spatially explicit translational knowledge graph embedding model called TransGeo which utilizes an edge-weighted PageRank and sampling strategy to encode the distance decay into the embedding model training process. This embedding model is further applied to relax and rewrite unanswerable geographic questions. We carry out two evaluation tasks: link prediction as well as query relaxation/rewriting for an approximate answer prediction task. A geographic knowledge graph training/testing dataset, DB18, as well as an unanswerable geographic query dataset, GeoUQ, are constructed. Compared to four other baseline models, our TransGeo model shows substantial advantages in both tasks.

In 1876, an American by the name of Benjamin Smith Lyman submitted to the Japanese government a geological map of 'Yesso', which had been compiled under his direction. This map displayed the assumed stratigraphy of Hokkaido, in northern Japan, and is considered the first modern geological map to be produced by an Asian state. This provided a new means of comprehending territory, at exactly the moment the land in question was being re-presented as Hokkaido. The strata exhumed in the course of mapping this land at depth were not limited to those under the Earth. The map was assembled atop a history of Japanese control over the region, one which accounted for the precocious presence of an earlier American survey, conducted under the previous Tokugawa government, which had sought to map mineral deposits in this land of Yesso. These in turn reflected a longer history of mineral extraction, present in the earliest accounts of Ezo, and the motivation for Japan to have long 'held the reins' over this amorphous region. The 1876 geological map is a striking example of colonial modernity, through which we are able to observe the institutional mimicry characteristic to, and increasingly emphasized in the study of, late-nineteenth century inter-imperial society. The presence of this map challenges us to recover the various strata atop of which this imperial sociability was able to flourish, and examine the role of the map in incorporating a modernizing Japan within a globally-comprehensible means of territorial authority and control.

The paper elaborates on an Agent-based Modeling approach for an indoor manufacturing environment-in particular, a semiconductor production plant. In order to maintain a flexible production "line", there is no conveyor belt, and a mix of different products is present in the indoor environment. With the integration of Industry 4.0 or Smart Manufacturing principles, production assets may be transported by autonomous robots in the near future. The optimization of manufacturing processes is challenging and computationally hard. Thus, simulation methods are used to optimize manufacturing plants and the processes. In contemporary literature, the effects of the spatial dimension with respect to the simulation of manufacturing processes is neglected. In this paper, we evaluate on the effects the spatial dimension in an Agent-based Model for indoor manufacturing environments. The Agent-based Model developed in this paper is utilized to simulate a manufacturing environment with the help of an artificial indoor space and a set of test data. Four simulation scenarios-with varying levels of spatial data usable-have been tested using Repast Simphony framework. The results reveal that different levels of available spatial information have an influence on the simulation results of indoor manufacturing environments and processes. First, the distances moved by the worker agents can be significantly reduced and the unproductive movements of worker agents (without production assets) can be decreased.

In planning profession, every step of the planning process is guided by data-either in the form of primary data or secondary data, collected by various institutions and agencies, but rarely shared in public forum. Each project allocates a significant portion of the project timeline and cost for data collection, but these costs and challenges can be drastically reduced if the data is open. This chapter highlights a case example on the role of open data in climate resilient development for Delhi. The example indicates the use of open data, available on the geoportal of international agencies, national agencies and local government, in conducting spatial-temporal analysis of spatial development and climate change environmental degradation, for three decades within a time span of 5months. The study is grounded in remote sensing based on Landsat imageries made available from the online portal of United States Geological Survey (USGS) and a digital elevation model available from the USGS as well as national geoportal called Bhuvan. The models built from these aerial imageries are empirically analyzed in a correlation model supported by data inputs through national, state and local government data available on various government portals of Delhi, including Geospatial Delhi Limited. The crux of the research highlighted in the chapter, is to emphasize on the importance of open data for urban planners and administrators of India in ever changing dynamics of city and its region-and the need for climate resilient urban strategies for a sustainable urban future.

From the late 1700s until 1880, no official or comprehensive map based on first-hand surveys of China was created in Europe. In Qing China (1644-1911) as well, cartographers relied on the Kangxi Atlas maps until the 1860s and 1870s. These were based on exploratory surveys and created with the consultancy of Jesuit mathematicians, and had been revised and augmented several times by the Yongzheng (r.1722-1735) and Qianlong (r.1735-1796) emperors. Following the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842, the Royal Geographical Society in London asked the geographer William Huttmann to recommend cartographic works from which to compile a new and updated map. This paper analyses Huttmann's recommendations, placing them into the cartographic context of 1844, in order to investigate the cartographic and geographic situation in-between the large surveys undertaken during the imperial age of the eighteenth century and the colonial age at the end of the nineteenth century. As a foundation for a new map, Huttmann recommended maps of Qing cartographers to be taken as a basis, as well as the survey maps produced during the Kangxi era with the consultancy and co-authorship of Jesuit missionaries. The information provided therein was to be supplemented by reports of individual travelers. Huttmann does not mention and recommend the maps of the smaller, newly evolving geographic societies and institutions in Europe, which continued to develop scientific cartographies, but which did not include new first-hand materials.
