This contribution focuses on the interdependence between map production and map usage including adaption and re-circulation, which can be witnessed by a historiographical approach to mapping. Case study are the maps displaying the history of 7th c. BCE Egypt, which date from the later 20th and early 21st c. AD. Key observation is the loss of specialised cartographic and even historiographical knowledge in the process of its dissemination. Though the case study presents a very specific example and, in addition, one that is based on a rather small corpus of sources, the author assumes that the detectable mechanisms are in operation on a much larger scale, though maybe less visible.

Mangroves are unique ecosystem found mainly in tropical coastal region in saline environment and under tidal influence. It has enormous ecological and economic value to the environment and local people. However, the problems are arising in tropical coastal region like Sundarban, where both natural and ever increasing anthropogenic activities have complicated the growth and development of mangroves. Therefore, spatio-temporal monitoring of mangroves has huge importance for their conservation in Sundarban World Heritage Site, the largest mangrove population in the world. Remote sensing has been proven as an important tool to monitor such ecosystem, but the traditional pixel based approach has several drawbacks. Recently, Object-based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach in remote sensing has helped to overcome such drawbacks. The present study attempts to analyse the status of mangroves over the time period of 40 years (1975-2015) in the study area using Landsat time series images through OBIA. The result reveals that the mangroves are gradually reducing over the last 40 years and about 4% mangrove area has been converted into water. It is a major indication of increase in sea water level, making many islands vulnerable. The time series analysis in some islands, like Bhangaduni, Bulchery, Dalhousie and Halliday shows the land area as well as mangroves have been destroyed more than one-third. If the process continues at the same rate, these islands may soon completely disappear.

Recent studies state that people familiar with an environment prefer landmarks with semantic salience, while people unfamiliar with an environment prefer landmarks with outstanding visual and structural characteristics. Current landmark salience models are not able to provide such personalized landmarks. To tackle this problem we proposed a multidimensional model for personalized landmarks and identified attributes of the personal dimension. This poster focuses on the next step, the calculation of potential values of the attributes and the discussion of their relationships.

Spatial computing occurs at multiple scales, ranging from the minuscule to the gigantic. This raises the question whether the concepts involved in computing are scale-invariant. The Core Concepts of Spatial Information have originally been proposed for geographic spaces, though with the intent to make them applicable across scales. We have started to systematically validate them for astronomic spaces, starting with the concept of location.

This paper describes the use of rich spatiotemporal relationships in cultural heritage information modelling in order to increase the information organization and extraction. The idea is to tailor the spatiotemporal state of identity model, i.e. a model based on spatiotemporal identity that takes into account relationships between non-existing and non-presents objects, to the management cultural heritage information. In doing so, we propose an enhancement of the knowledge representation for cultural heritage.

The importance of perception across all the senses has been recognised in previous studies on landscape preferences. Here, we focus on aural perception, and in a preliminary study explore how references to sounds and their sources can be extracted from descriptions of images in a corpus containing 85,000 documents. We classified references to sounds according to previous work as biophony, geophony and antrophony. As a first step we have extracted descriptions related to sounds associated with verbs. The most common sound emitters in our corpus are wind (geophony), birds (biophony) and traffic (anthrophony) respectively. In future work we will move beyond the sentence level to deal with co-references, and use other parts of speech (e.g. adjectives such as quiet and loud or nouns such as noise, silence, echo, etc.).

The concept of Circular Economy has gained momentum during the last decade. Yet unsustainable circular systems can also create unintended social, economic and environmental damage. Sustainability is highly dependent on a system's geographical context, such as location of resources, cultural acceptance, economic, environmental and transport geography. While in some cases an impact of the proposed change may be considered equally significant under all circumstances (e.g. increase of carbon emissions as a main contributor to the global climate change), many impacts may change both their direction and the extent of significance dependent on their context (e.g. land consumptionmay be positively evaluated if applied to abandoned territories or negatively if a forest needs to be sacrificed). The geographical context, (i.e. its sensitivity, vulnerability or potential) is commonly assessed by Spatial Decision Support Systems. However, currently those systems typically do not perform an actual impact assessment as impact characteristics stay constant regardless of location. Likewise, relevant Impact Assessment methods, although gradually becomingmore spatial, assume their context as invariable. As a consequence, impact significance so far is also a spatially unvarying concept. However, current technological developments allow to rapidly record, analyse and visualise spatial data. This article introduces the concept of spatially varying impact significance assessment, by reviewing its current definitions in literature, and analysing to what extent the concept is applied in existing assessment methods. It concludes with a formulation of spatially varying impact significance assessment for innovation in the field of impact assessment.

A project of cooperation between the universities of Sao Paulo and Lyon has produced exchanges on the subjects of urbanization dynamics and spatial representations. The approach of two cities that differ largely in what involves periods and intensity of growth has been an interesting way to compare how mapping procedures developed in the first half of the twentieth century. In a moment of important urban sprawl, both cities have incorporated a range of new techniques, such as aerial photography or new geodetic networks. This was done in an attempt to cover the overflow of the city beyond its original borders. Mapping activities were the basis for a series of new urban plans, even if they were not conducted in the same way or by the same kind of institution in each city. In Lyon the role of local private surveyors was particularly important in the new series proposed since 1910: 1/2000 mappings were used, building on a 1/500 cartography started in the 1860s. In Sao Paulo, the role of foreign companies, as the SARA mapping in the late 1920s, created a new reference map in the scales of 1/5000 and 1/1000 contributing to the idea of a modern city. In both cases, new projects for road maps set the stage for a city where daily mobility involved larger distances based on new means of transportation. This caused the need for a change in the scale and the way to portray a city that would be decisive for its further development.

In the aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the commercial availability of previously classified Soviet military mapping has revealed the vastness of a global mapping project, previously unknown to the rest of the world, comprising detailed topographic maps and city plans at several scales. Although numerous libraries and archives around the world have acquired these maps, and continue to do so, difficulties in interpreting the metadata of each sheet have led to errors and inconsistencies in the cataloguing of the maps, potentially hindering their accessibility. This paper focuses on approaches to identifying metadata on the maps and will present some illustrated examples as a guide. It is hoped that such assistance in the interpretation of these maps in general will also be of use to cataloguers.

The paper reports on an exploratory study where we examine alpine route directions from the perspective of new and given information. The first results reveal traces of a "mountain scenario"-we encounter geographic entities that are introduced into the discourse as assumingly familiar to the reader, signalling a certain structure associated with alpine space.
