Route planning algorithms in indoor navigation systems are currently limited to shortest path algorithms or derivatives. The development of a cognitive route planning algorithm, providing cognitive more comfortable paths to navigators, could improve these systems. The first phase of the development of such an algorithm entails the identification of relevant path characteristics of the indoor environment. Therefore, a user study is enrolled: an in-depth discussion with a focus group of experts is followed by an international online survey.

The article gives a new approach to the assessment of objects in terms of various criteria which by its nature belong to the issue of multi-criteria decision making and analysis. The proposed variant of multi-criteria decision-making is based on a comparison of the real considered object model that is created according to user's requirements with the reference value. The geographic object means a real object in this case the object is stored in digital geo-database in the geographic information system (GIS). The reference value represents optimal geographic object which is the most suitable for user's purposes. The comparison of the values of individual criteria is based on the theory of tolerance and metric spaces. Supplementary GIS-based application to calculate the weights of the criteria, which have served to comparison was used. The proposed procedure for the evaluation of various criteria has been validated on a pilot project "SMART Regions" in the city Brno district of Novy Liskovec neighbourhood in the Czech Republic. Around the city district known by its typical of prefabricated blocks of flats it is necessary to compare the different options for renewal urban housing development. Urbanization city prefabricated housing estates using GIS opportunities will be ready to quick respond to the call of various changes in the field of energy sustainability. Therefore, it is important to utilize the available environmental resources for energy sustainability.

Spatial navigation by humans and other animals engages representations of environmental boundaries as well as featural landmarks. In this paper we examine the use of these two types of information using a virtual reality (VR) task in patients with Williams syndrome (WS), a genetic disorder involving abnormalities in brain regions that support spatial cognition. Our preliminary data suggests that boundary-based navigation is more fragile in this syndrome, compared to control subjects matched for mental and chronological age.

Effectively communicating the uncertainty that is inherent in any kind of geographic information remains a challenge. This paper investigates the efficacy of animation as a visual variable to represent positional uncertainty in a web mapping context. More specifically, two different kinds of animation (a 'bouncing' and a 'rubberband' effect) have been compared to two static visual variables (symbol size and transparency), as well as different combinations of those variables in an online experiment with 163 participants. The participants' task was to identify the most and least uncertain point objects in a series of web maps. The results indicate that the use of animation to represent uncertainty imposes a learning step on the participants, which is reflected in longer response times. However, once the participants got used to the animations, they were both more consistent and slightly faster in solving the tasks, especially when the animation was combined with a second visual variable. According to the test results, animation is also particularly well suited to represent positional uncertainty, as more participants interpreted the animated visualizations correctly, compared to the static visualizations using symbol size and transparency. Somewhat contradictory to those results, the participants showed a clear preference for those static visualizations.

Terrestrial and celestial globes as well as planetaria, telluria and lunaria are representative models of the cosmos with high cultural and scientific importance. At a time when a global point of view is increasingly adopted by historians, the importance of these 'chronotopical' objects in the fields of history of science, cultural history, history of geography and arts necessitates the appreciation of the variety of globes, the involved protagonists, the history of manufacturing methods and technical innovations in globe production. Moreover, new technologies for visualizing old globes, will allow these physical objects to be transferred into virtual reality.

Using cognitive linguistic strategies, people can verbally encode and convey their spatial realities with little effort (i.e. "my house is right across the street from the grocery store"). However, to date there are a limited number of ways to transform such spatial information into forms that are useful for computational analysis in a geographic information system (GIS), and for sharing across research communities. This paper uses a case study in the Balinese language to investigate the spatial and linguistic information necessary to compute such transformations. That is, to transform verbally communicated spatial scenes into GIS-suitable data. We propose an ontology which captures reference frames used in certain Balinese locative expressions together with the parameters (ground, direction and template) required for transformation. The approach allows for the sharing of translation methods and the reuse of contextual information on the Web. Based on this model, we identify open research questions on the way to supporting approximate transformations of locative expressions.

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is Africa's most endangered large felid. In Kenya, cheetahs are extirpated from 25% of their historic range with 75% of the population residing outside protected areas. Action for Cheetahs in Kenya (ACK) endeavours to understand cheetah ecology and threats in human-dominated landscapes. The NGO is a suitable candidate for benefitting from the development and deployment of mobile map apps on smartphones to support the monitoring of species, also by so-called citizen scientists. The apps enable a digital workflow of data collection, transfer and analysis. This paper describes the process of developing custom mobile map apps from the conceptualizing of a system from data collection to data storage. We discuss the implementation as well as on the ground testing which included a usability study. The software environment from Esri's platform tools were used but aiming at a low-cost solution which supports both secure monitoring in the field and the management of sensitive data. Due to hardware constraints the implemented system cannot be considered a state-of-the art version, but for ACK it is a big step towards digital data collection by means of an app family and data management in a database. A Web frontend allows for input on cheetah sightings also from outside the organization and serves the purpose of visualizing observation efforts for potential donors. While software development took place mainly in Germany, the usability study following the installation of the mobile app monitoring system targeted twelve ACK staff members on the ground in Kenya. Before the testing the users expected faster and less work in particular in the field and an easier reporting to office staff and streamlined data collection. Original holograph and manuscript cartographic materials, for potential or eventual publication by the Royal Geographical Society, survive in considerable variety, number and condition. The RGS's first commissioned map (1830) was a facsimile of Hereford Cathedral's medieval manuscript mappamundi. From 1854 Map Room staff became draughtsmen of large diagram maps for lectures;until 1877 external draughtsmen were generally employed to copy or produce the RGS's published illustrations. Manuscript itineraries, astronomical observations for position-fixing, sketch maps (some derived from ` native' or indigenous sources), and printed items (Admiralty charts, War Office maps) were bases for compiling maps and large diagrams. Survey Department Egypt's Capt. H. G. Lyons sent 6200 copies of the Nile basin orographical map for his Journal article (Lyons. Geogr J 32 (5):[449]-480, 1908). Compilation rules (data sources noted), toponymy (transliteration, Romanisation and orthography), lettering styles, and technical processes (steel, then quill, pens to scribing) evolved. To recoup its expenses the Society hired out or loaned its illustrations and artefacts to other events and institutions (Herbert. The Royal Geographical Society. Map matching, i.e. matching a moving entity's position trajectory to an underlying transport network, is a crucial functionality of many location-based services. During the last decade, numerous map-matching algorithms have been proposed, tackling challenging aspects like sparse trajectory data or online matching. This work describes GraphiumMM, an open-source map-matching implementation combining and optimizing geometrical and topological matching concepts from previous works. The implementation aims at highly accurate and performant map matching in online and offline mode taking trajectories with average sampling intervals between 1 and 120 s as input. For evaluating its runtime performance and matching quality, results are compared to results from the open-source map-matcher Barefoot. Results indicate better matching quality and runtime performance especially for sampling intervals from 1 to 15 s in offline and online mode.

This paper describes the application of a BIM (Building Information Modelling) process to a medieval building analysed through the most classic tool of architectural archaeology, namely the stratigraphic analysis of structures. The case study, conducted by a multi-disciplinary team, attempts to shed light on the procedure's strong points and shortcomings, and to widen the range of digital tools employed during the preparatory stages of restoration projects. The ultimate aim is to acquire in-depth knowledge of the asset and the history of its construction through the integration of documentary sources and on-site material findings, with the firm belief that proper data analysis and processing may lead to correct decisions concerning the asset's conservation and enjoyment.
