Reacting to unforeseen obstacles is a major issue in the field of autonomous navigation. In the context of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, an "obstacle" is any object that stands between the UAV and its desired position (waypoint). Therefore, obstacle detection can be reduced to the problem of assessing the visibility of the waypoint from the point of view of the drone. In this work, data acquired from an onboard depth camera are used to describe the visibility of the target waypoint in a qualitative framework, and to plan a new route when obstacles are detected.

Although early theoretical works dealing with the effects of information communication technologies on people's relation to spatiality claim that distance is no longer important in the information age, there is a growing number of empirical results stressing on the contrary the importance of geographical factors. In the era of big data now we have the chance to give more insights on the geography of the internet-related social processes, since there are unprecedentedly large enough samples to analyse social behaviour as well as to understand the changing role of geography. Accordingly, the following paper is focusing on the geographical analysis of a nowadays very popular topic: the online social networks. Examples of iWiW, the largest Hungarian social media site, are applied to show that such networks are evolving and are structured not independently of spatial constraints. The paper attempts to present many proximity-driven characteristics of this network starting from distance-based examples of space-time evolution and with examples of proximity-focused statistical analysis of the spatial structure. The calculations highlighted that-although it was changing in time-proximity-driven processes have been predominant in city-to-city diffusion, especially when dealing with intracity spreading, but also at cases of short distance neighbourhood diffusion. Calculations by comparing factors like the average strength of connectivity, population size and average relative distance rates of cities also confirmed that proximity had an influence on the network structure.

Old and historic water works are the subject of interdisciplinary interest, which covers the spectrum from hydrology and environmental protection to heritage preservation. The reason is the very meaning of these works in terms of nature and landscape protection and technical landmarks conservation, but also their impact on the water dynamics in the landscape during the normal and extreme runoff situations. Because the documentation of these objects is often conforming to their age and changes in ownership together with the issues about the standardization of these data, and often not even in the digital form. However, Czech Hydrometeorological Institute is responsible for the hydrometric and expert surveying on these objects. Above mentioned aspects formed the main motivation for the progressing cooperation with partners on the issues such is the methodical data collection and evaluation of these objects in pilot areas using the tools of the hydrometry, geoinformatics and mathematical modelling. Existing results of the hydrometrical measurements, GIS analyses and hydraulic modelling within the pilot areas together with the other tasks and issues to be solved are presented in this paper.

Compression of 3D objects has been recently discussed mainly in the domain of 3D computer graphics. However, more and more applications demonstrate that the third dimension plays an important role also in the domain of modelling and streaming of geographical objects. This is especially true for 3D city models and their distribution via internet. Despite the fact that compression of textual information related to geographical objects has a significant importance, in this paper we concentrate only on compression of geometry information and also on more complex geometries with irregular shapes. Considering the compression of 3D geographical objects, the 3D triangle meshes representation are used. 3D mesh compression is a way how to reduce the required cost of storage for triangle meshes without losing any details. The triangle is the basic geometric primitive for standard graphics rendering hardware. The compression algorithm aims at storing the input data into a binary file that is as small as possible. For encoding of the mesh connectivity, our compression implements the popular Edgebreaker algorithm. The character of geometry encoding is largely governed by the way connectivity is encoded. A popular choice of prediction for the Edgebreaker algorithm is the parallelogram predictor. It has been observed in Vasa and Brunnett (IEEE Trans Vis Comput Graph 19(9): 1467-1475, 2013) that such prediction can be further improved by taking a two-step approach, first transmitting the complete connectivity and only afterwards transmitting the geometry. We used this approach to compress geographical objects at various level of detail. It does not bring an improvement for all datasets, especially meshes with many parallelogram shape prediction stencils do not benefit from it. However for complex geographical objects (bridges in our case) the used algorithm works nicely and after the compression the amount of data is even lower than 4 % of the original file size.

Recent developments in data collection methods such as laser scanning technology contributed to the rise of massive datasets representing the landscapes with an unprecedented accuracy. However, processing of the massive datasets poses new challenges. Current geographic information system softwares have a limited capability to effectively handle such data. Therefore, specialised software must be used in order to further analyse the data in a geographic information system. This study describes the key methodological aspects of processing massive laser scanning datasets with a set of software tools and demonstrates the benefits of integrating the data in a geographic information system. The presented case study represents a complex karst landscape in the south-eastern part of Slovakia.

The paper is focused on research in the area of processing LIDAR data with Apache Hadoop. Our team is managing an information system that is able to calculate probability of existence of different objects in space and time. The system works with a lot of different data sources, including large datasets. We may process LIDAR data in the future as well, so we were interested how to process LIDAR data with Apache Hadoop. Our colleagues from the institute of geology are using LIDAR data and have a lot of problems with their processing. The main problem is time that is necessary to process the data to build simple DEM in GRID format that is commonly used in the geology (geomorphology) area. We were interested if we could help them with processing such kind of data with MapReduce architecture on Apache Hadoop to produce GRID data suitable to their needs. The paper presents results of our research.
