Social networks are a valuable source of information to support the detection and monitoring of targeted events, such as rainfall episodes. Since the emergence of Web 2.0, several studies have explored the relationship between social network messages and authoritative data in the context of disaster management. However, these studies fail to address the problem of the temporal validity of social network data. This problem is important for establishing the correlation between social network activity and the different phases of rainfall events in real-time, which thus can be useful for detecting and monitoring extreme rainfall events. In light of this, this paper adopts a temporal approach for analyzing the cross-correlation between rainfall gauge data and rainfall-related Twitter messages by means of temporal units and their lag-time. This approach was evaluated by conducting a case study in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, using a dataset of rainfall data provided by the Brazilian National Disaster Monitoring and Early Warning Center. The results provided evidence that the rainfall gauge time-series and the rainfall-related tweets are not synchronized, but they are linked to a lag-time that ranges from -10 to +10 min. Furthermore, our temporal approach is thus able to pave the way for detecting patterns of rainfall in real-time based on social network messages.

City streets are a focal point of human activity in urban centers. Citizens interact with the urban environment through its streetscape and it is imperative to, not only map city streetscapes, but quantify those interactions in terms of human well-being. Researchers now have access to fully digitized representation of streetscapes through Google Street View (GSV), which captures the profile view of streetscapes and, thus, shares equivalent viewing angles with those of the citizen. These two facets-a wealth of streetscape photographs at city-scale and a shared perspective with the end user-underscore the potential of these data in street-level urban landscape mapping. In this study, we introduce two examples that demonstrate GSV as a high-quality data source for mapping street greenery and openness. First, the modified green view index, which estimates the visibility of street greenery, was applied to static GSV images in order to map the spatial distribution of street greenery. Second, GSV panoramas were used to quantify and map the openness of street canyons by applying a geometrical transformation and image classification to the panoramas. The results of these two novel applications of street-level photographic data illustrate its utility for quantifying and mapping key urban environmental features at the same viewpoint in which we, as citizens, experience the urban landscape.

The soils, as one of the basic landscape components, influence directly or indirectly almost all human activities. They have radical influence on a food production, environment formation, water regime and many other aspects. Besides that, they are one of the dominant landscape components, which influences significantly passability of the off-road movement. The knowledge of this influence is necessary especially for farmers, foresters, soldiers and rescuers. Farmers and foresters have an opportunity to postpone their work when the conditions are inconvenient. But rescuers and soldiers must accomplish their tasks immediately. So it is very important for them to know how they can move and which vehicle they can use in the required area. The big amount of data is necessary to evaluate the soil. Except for own soil databases there are mainly meteorological information, because weather has significant influence on the behaviour of the particular soil. Precipitations are the most fundamental of all the meteorological components or phenomena. Except for weather, there are also other components of landscape influencing the soil characteristics, such as vegetation, drainage and especially relief, which affect significantly drain and accumulation of water in soils. The main goal of the undergoing investigation is to predict the influence of soils on vehicle movement in dependence on soil characteristics, weather information and modelled drain conditions. The actual modelling employs digital soil database, detailed elevation models, radar images of precipitations, meteorological information from stationary stations and penetrometric measurement realized in different soil conditions. This modelling will be implemented to the cross-country movement model, which caused improvement to the older version of the model of cross-country movement and makes the model more accurate.

Depicting a large number of points on a map may lead to overplotting and to a visual clutter. One of the widely accepted visualization methods that provides a good overview of a spatial distribution of a large number of points is a heat map. Interactions for efficient data exploration, such as zooming, filtering or parameters' adjustments, are highly demanding on the heat map construction. This is true especially in the case of big data. In this paper, we focus on a novel approach of estimating the kernel density and heat map visualization by utilizing a graphical processing unit. We designed a web-based JavaScript library dedicated to heat map rendering and user interactions through WebGL. The designed library enables to render a heat map as an overlay over a background map provided by a third party API (e.g. Open Layers) in the scope of milliseconds, even for data size exceeding one million points. In order to validate our approach, we designed a demo application visualizing a car accident dataset in the Great Britain. The described solution proves fast rendering times (below 100 ms) even for dataset up to 1.5 million points and outperforms mainstream systems such as the Google Maps API, Leaflet heat map plugin or ESRI's ArcGIS online. Such performance enables interactive adjustments of the heat map parameters required by various domain experts. The described implementation is a part of the WebGLayer open source information visualization library.

We present a list of measures for a single trajectory, including measures that require the presence of other trajectories, such as the centrality of a trajectory amidst other trajectories. Then, we introduce three different views in order to extend measures of a single trajectory to a group, namely the representative view, the complete view and the area view. Furthermore, we give measures that exist only for a group of trajectories, like density and formation stability. We also show that it may be possible to define new measures by combining trajectory data with data from other sources, such as the environment where the entities move. Finally, we discuss several tasks: settlement selection, visualization and segmentation, where measures on groups of trajectories are necessary.

Route planning makes direct use of geographic data and provides beneficial recommendations to the public. In real-world the schedule of transit vehicles is dynamic and delays in the schedules occur. Incorporation of these dynamic schedule changes in multi-modal route computation is difficult and requires a lot of computational resources. Our approach extends the state-of-the-art for static transit schedules, Transfer Patterns, for the dynamic case. Therefore, we amend the patterns by additional edges that cover the dynamics. Our approach is implemented in the open source routing framework OpenTripPlanner and compared to existing methods in the city of Warsaw. Our results are an order of magnitude faster then existing methods.

Location referencing systems (LRS) are a crucial requisite for referencing traffic information to a road network. In the past, several methods and standards for static or dynamic location referencing have been proposed. All of them support machine-interpretable location references but only some of them include human-interpretable concepts. If included, these references are based on pre-defined locations (e. g. as location catalogue) and often miss meaningful interlinking with road network models (e. g. locations being simply mapped to geographic coordinates). In a parallel research strand, ontological concepts for structuring road networks based on human conceptualizations of space have been proposed. So far, both methods have not been integrated. The current work closes this gap and proposes a generation process for meaningful location references on top of road networks based on qualitative spatial concepts. A prototypical implementation using OWL, Neo4J graph database and a standardized nationwide road network graph shows the practical applicability of the approach. Results indicate that the proposed approach is able to bridge the gap between existing road network models and human conceptualizations on multiple levels of abstraction.

Spherical photogrammetry (SP) is an efficient method in 3D model acquisition. The SP method is fast, low cost, and the resulting of 3D model is reliable. SP has many advantages, but it also has many disadvantages. Since it uses panoramic images as the basic information, significant distortion within the panoramic image causes the accuracy of the 3D model to be less accurate. These distortions need to be corrected and one way to correct and reduce the distortion effect is by performing camera calibration through laboratory calibration and self-calibration. In previous research, self-calibration actually had been performed without laboratory calibration, but there is still miss stitching and alignment in the high resolution panoramic image (Brown and Lowe in Int J Comput Vision 74 (1): 59-73, 2007). Laboratory calibration and self-calibration are procedures which aims to determine the lens distortion parameters, such as radial and tangential distortion, as well as the interior camera parameters, such as focal length and the principle point of photos. All parameters are used to correct the distorted images. Thus, this research tries to perform laboratory calibration together with self-calibration. Different scenarios are made, and the result shows that the laboratory calibration and self-calibration corrects panoramic image distortion and lowers the standard deviation of the panoramic image stitching process. Although the laboratory calibration and self-calibration shows better results in the panoramic image stitching process, the corrected panoramic image does not affect the 3D model reconstruction accuracy significantly. The accuracy is rather affected by the photogrammetric network design, which significantly influences the panoramic image projection distortion.

Discussed here is the essence of cartography as well as the specifics and the uniqueness in the cartographic modelling process. During the analysis of the theory of cartography and relations to other fields of knowledge, especially philosophy, eight properties of cartographic modelling have been defined which distinguish the process from other methods of space modelling. In attempting to define essential properties of cartographic modelling which would distinguish the process from other methods of space modelling, the authors introduce the notion that the method of cartographic presentation in the form of a map is not limited to graphic representation only. The language of graphic symbols used in classic methods of cartographic presentation is only one form of the cartographic notation of spatial information.

The demand for geospatial data across different disciplines and organisations has led to the development and implementation of spatial data infrastructures (SDI) and the theory and concepts behind them. An SDI is an evolving concept about facilitating and coordinating the exchange of geospatial data and services between stakeholders from different levels in the spatial data community. Universities and other research organisations typically have well-established libraries and digital catalogues for scientific literature, but catalogues for geospatial data are rare. Geospatial data is widely used in research, but geospatial data produced by researchers is seldom available, accessible and usable, e.g., for purposes of teaching or further research after completion of the project. This chapter describes the experiences of a number of SDI implementations at universities and research institutes. Based on this, the Academic SDI, an SDI for research and education, is defined and its stakeholders are described. The purpose, scope and stakeholders of the Academic SDI are described based on the formal model of an SDI developed by the International Cartographic Association (ICA) Commission on SDIs and Standards (formerly the Commission on geoinformation Infrastructures and Standards). The results contribute to understanding the state-of-the-art in SDI implementations at universities and research institutes;how the Academic SDI differs from a 'regular' SDI;and which role players need to be involved in a successful SDI implementation for research and education.
