Early military aviation relied first and foremost on maps for navigational purposes, but was also involved in the compilation, improvement and updating of the map sheets used. Although aeronautics and cartography were entwined, their overlap has remained largely understudied. The following notes are an attempt to close this informational gap with regard to Germany's participation in WWI with the focus on German military aviation (Luftstreitkrafte). For an additional discussion of the Central Power's general approach to military mapping in the Great War, please see chapter "A good map is half the battle" (vide pp. xx-xx).

William Light's appointment as Leader of the South Australian Colonization Commissioners' 'First Expedition', as first Surveyor-General of the new British Province of South Australia, and his founding of the City of Adelaide in 1837, owes much to his military experiences in the British Royal Navy, and in the British Army where he served as a cavalry reconnaissance officer and Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General during the Peninsular War (1809-1814). In 1813, Light's mapping and assessment of routes through northern Portugal and Spain assisted in planning of the Vitoria campaign and thereafter. For the advance of infantry, cavalry and artillery, he reported on inaccuracies and details omitted in Lopez's maps, on the condition and practicability of routes through Portugal's Tras os Montes, Spain's Castilla y Leon, and crossings of the Esla and Ebro rivers. This paper examines Light's unpublished Peninsular War diary, route maps, sketch maps and topographical watercolour paintings of Portugal, Spain and South Australia. It also discusses the links between the surveying and route mapping he undertook during his military service and the work he did in peacetime, as well as his original coordinated cadastre for 'the Adelaide Plain, exemplified by the beautiful 1838 watercolour' manuscript map Plan of the Preliminary Country Sections in the District of Adelaide, and design of a transport network for the Adelaide Plain which is still largely intact to this day.

There are many spatiotemporal events with high levels of detail (LoDs) being collected in many phenomena. The LoD of analysis plays a crucial role in the user's perception of phenomena. From one LoD to another, some patterns can be easily perceived or different patterns may be detected. Standard practices work on a single LoD driven by the user in spite of the fact that there is no exclusive LoD to study a phenomenon. Our proposal aims to support users in carrying the inspection and comparison tasks of a phenomenon across multiple LoDs, without having to look at raw data, and to handle the spatiotemporal complexity. This paper presents a framework to build abstracts at different LoDs where five types of abstracts are proposed. The framework makes no assumption about the phenomenon, the analytical task and the phenomenon's LoDs. The SUITE's prototype implements the proposed framework allowing users to inspect abstracts across multiple LoDs simultaneously, helping to understand in what LoDs the phenomenon perception distinguishes itself or in what LoDs "interesting patterns" emerge.

This project presents a hypothetical case study of an interactive mobile-based Public Participation Geographical Information Systems (PPGIS) prototype for selection of best alternative for new offshore wind farm development in Lake Erie, northern Ohio. The prototype implements a client-server architecture where Android operating system is used for the client side, and Google Cloud Platform services and GeoServer/PostgreSQL for the server side. The potential benefits from this prototype are demonstrated through an interactive Android interface where the importance of three decision alternatives is evaluated by multiple participants using different evaluation criteria. The individual evaluation scores are aggregated by using a mathematical Pairwise comparison voting method while the sum of all individual Pairwise comparison scores yields the group solution. The results from the group solution are interactively returned and used for building consensus and to aid understanding of potential solutions coalesced from multiple participants' perspectives.

A natural language interface can improve human-computer interaction with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A prerequisite for this is the mapping of natural language expressions onto spatial queries. Previous mapping approaches, using, for example, fuzzy sets, failed because of the flexible and context-dependent use of spatial terms. Context changes the interpretation drastically. For example, the spatial relation "near" can be mapped onto distances ranging anywhere from kilometers to centimeters. We present a context-enriched semiotic triangle that allows us to distinguish between multiple interpretations. As formalization we introduce the notation of contextualized concepts that is tied to one context. One concept inherits multiple contextualized concepts such that multiple interpretations can be distinguished. The interpretation for one contextualized concept corresponds to the intention of the spatial term, and is used as input for a spatial query. To demonstrate our computational model, a next generation GIS is envisioned that maps the spatial relation "near" to spatial queries differently according to the influencing context.

The Paris Peace Conference was a turning point in European history, but also a milestone in the way maps were used in the reshaping of territory and in the forming of new states. Political, administrative, historical, linguistic, and ethnographic maps served as one of the basic sources of information in that process. The American Geographic Society Library (AGS) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee holds maps that were actually sent to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, and based on which decisions were made about the new states and their borders. These maps were used by President Woodrow Wilson and the American delegation in the creation of new states. That makes them some of the most important maps of the early twentieth century, giving to cartography a completely new dimension regarding diplomatic activities and foreign affairs. One of the most complex negotiation processes was certainly the creation of the state of the South Slavs-the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later renamed Yugoslavia), which until then had never existed. In this paper we will present the maps used by the American delegation for shaping Yugoslavia's borders.

Space-time paths and prisms based on the time geographic framework model actual (empirical or simulated) and potential mobility, respectively. There are well-established methods for quantitatively measuring similarity between space-time paths, including dynamic time warping and edit-distance functions. However, there are no corresponding measures for comparing space-time prisms. Analogous to path similarity, space-time prism similarity measures can support comparison of individual accessibility, prism clustering methods and retrieving prisms similar to a reference prism from a mobility database. In this paper, we introduce a method to calculate space-time prism similarity through temporal sweeping. The sweeping method generates temporal profile curves summarizing dynamic prism geometry or semantic content over the time span of the prism's existence. Given these profile curves, we can apply existing path similarity methods to compare space-time prisms based on a specified geometric or semantic prism. This method can also be scaled to multiple prisms, and can be applied to prisms and paths simultaneously. We discuss the general approach and demonstrate the method for classic planar space-time prisms.

The characterization of place and its representation in current Geographic Information System (GIS) has become a prominent research topic. This paper concentrates on places that are cognitive regions, and presents a computational framework to derive the geographic footprint of these regions. The main idea is to use Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools to identify unique geographic features from User Generated Content (UGC) sources consisting of textual descriptions of places. These features are used to detect on a map an initial area that the descriptions refer to. A semantic representation of this area is extracted from a GIS and passed over to a Machine Learning (ML) algorithm that locates other areas according to semantic similarity. As a case study, we employ the proposed framework to derive the geographic footprint of the historic center of Vienna and validate the results by comparing the derived region against a historical map of the city.

For nearly 250 years a desolate, rocky archipelago between Tierra del Fuego and the Antarctic Peninsula has captivated, inspired, and angered the empires of the Atlantic world. The Falkland Islands have witnessed the clash of cultures and politics, the competing destinies of Britain, France, Spain, Argentina, and even the United States. Although recent tensions between London and Buenos Aires have renewed interest in the Falklands, scholars and commentators alike continue to omit the vital historical and contemporary role cartography plays in this longstanding dispute. This article demonstrates that at significant moments in the Falklands' past, maps and their makers acted both as potent visual manifestations of national propaganda and imperial interest, as well as important tools of negotiation. Ultimately, Falklands cartography proves to be an invaluable asset of historical knowledge as well as a problematic source of friction and confusion.

This contribution focuses on maps of Belgium produced in and outside the country during WWI and intended for the larger public. They have recently been digitized by the Royal library of Belgium and are readily accessible through the Europeana website. During WWI, the press was very much censored by the occupying forces. Maps are mentioned nowhere in official publications related to censorship, and consequently little or nothing has been written on their production or diffusion in Belgium at the time. Nonetheless, they constituted important sources of information, together with newspapers and magazines. This contribution discusses some examples of these maps against the background of what is known about the Germans' censorship policy in occupied Belgium.
