Considering the usability of real or fictitious surfaces, we analyze their formation both in terms of purpose and input data. Relief is understood as a major distribution factor of processes in the landscape. This concept is related to both continuous (e.g. air temperature, rainfall) and a discrete (various forms of land use) phenomena. While at continuous phenomena simulated surfaces of terrain distributed phenomena respect the configuration of the relief directly, simulated surfaces reflect rather discrete phenomena. Although largely shaped by terrain they differ from the relief itself, not regarding their different nature. A paper discusses within physical and human geography the issue of raster surfaces making. In case of real surfaces, authors use for calculation known regression dependences of air temperature and precipitation on various relief parameters regarding deeper intention of drought risk assessment. This serves as an evidence of dependences of given parameters on digital elevation model which results in higher accuracy opposite to fictitious surfaces generated using spatial analyst or statistic. On the example of Focal Statistic tool (Neighborhood Statistic) and IDW interpolation method differences towards the real state (e.g. concentric shapes in IDW generated surfaces) and too smoothed and generalized areas (using different size of moving window) are described and discussed. When defining the areas of post-industrial landscape authors came to the conclusion that not very often recommended IDW interpolation does not make so big inaccuracies as compared with Focal Statistic tool.

This chapter summarizes the results of an experiment performed as basic research on the three-dimensional (3D) display of geographical information using two alternative control devices (a Wii remote controller and a mouse). The aim was to explore the influence of a specific type of visualization on the human understanding of depicted geographical information and to discover which type of display-real 3D or pseudo-3D combined with a Wii remote controller and a computer mouse-can be considered better for working with geographical bases. The research was set up as an exploratory analysis and examined the performance of 17 participants. As expected, there were differences in the results between the types of visualization and devices used. Real-3D visualization appeared faster but less suitable for the successful management of tasks than the pseudo-3D visualization. We found no significant differences based on the controlling device when elaborating tasks, but we believe the Wii remote controller device to be a promising device for future studies.

In the next few years, 3D data is expected to be an intrinsic part of geospatial data. However, issues on 3D spatial data management are still in the research stage. One of the issues is performance deterioration during 3D data retrieval. Thus, a practical 3D index structure is required for efficient data constellation. Due to its reputation and simplicity, R-Tree has been received increasing attention for 3D geospatial database management. However, the transition of its structure from 2D to 3D had caused a serious overlapping among nodes. Overlapping nodes also occur during splitting operation of the overflown node N of M + 1 entry. Splitting operation is the most critical process of 3D R-Tree. The produced tree should satisfy the condition of minimal overlap and minimal volume coverage in addition with preserving a minimal tree height. Based on these concerns, in this paper, we proposed a crisp clustering algorithm for the construction of a 3D R-Tree. Several datasets are tested using the proposed method and the percentage of the overlapping parallelepipeds and volume coverage are computed and compared with the original R-Tree and other practical approaches. The experiments demonstrated in this research substantiated that the proposed crisp clustering is capable to preserve minimal overlap, coverage and tree height, which is advantageous for 3D geospatial data implementations. Another advantage of this approachis that the properties of this crisp clustering algorithm are analogous to the original R-Tree splitting procedure, which makes the implementation of this approach straightforward.

Based on the idea that maps are products that are designed for human use, this chapter advocates for redefining the map user and map use audience. Specifically, we argue for the inclusion or at least the discussion of principles of Universal Design and Design for All in the map design and production process. The chapter identifies three key constructs within cartographic communication models: the map, the map user, and knowledge transformation. A brief discussion of the development and principles of both Universal Design (in the United States) and Design for All (in the European Union) is provided. The underlying principles of those movements are then applied to the key constructs of the generalized cartographic communication models. This chapter does not offer explicit design guidelines for achieving inclusiveness in cartography. Rather, it acknowledges that including, exploring, and achieving inclusive design will be challenging. But, as a communication discipline with over 2000 years of history, cartography is well poised to embrace this challenge.

There are several established methodologies for visualizing space-time data. These visualizations range from complex three-dimensional (3D) animated displays to simple two-dimensional (2D) maps where the incident in time is mapped as a point on a 2D surface. This chapter explores the usability of space-time visualizations for forensic purposes and as evidence in criminal cases in South Africa. The chapter reviews several methodologies that the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has used in South Africa for forensic and prosecutorial purposes. The aim of this research is to provide improved methods to present accurately and effectively the 2D and 3D space-time data based on cellular telephone usage for use in investigations and prosecutions.

This paper deals with the issue of interoperability of heterogeneous sensor systems and the availability of their data from a global perspective. We show the application of previously developed WEDA architecture style into a GIS based experimental system and we present the performance analysis results of the system. The paper also presents its strengths as being a firewall-friendly, web-standards based solution that can be plugged into existing applications without needing to completely rewrite them (which is good when using OGC Sensor Web Enablement services). The paper compares the new style with styles which are used today in OGC Webservices. We then present an alpha version of the experimental system with eventing enhancements that are available with the new style. These principles will be applied from the experimental system to the final draft specification and API after more tests. If such a web-service standard meets the new binding possibilities, alerting will become widely accessible and GIS viewers and sensors can improve user-experience, loading/publishing sensor data or loading pipelined WMS tiles as well.

We present a comparison of a particles distribution model using 3D parameters derived from a CityGML-based 3D city model with an already advanced but 2D-based Land Use Regression model. Particles, especially ultrafine particles have significant influence on the health status of the urban population. Next to emission by cars and others, its distribution is tightly coupled to the local wind field and, therefore, to urban morphology influencing this wind field. However, 3D city models, especially CityGML have been almost ignored when modelling urban particles distribution. We introduce 3D parameters derived from a CityGML-based 3D city model in an already tested Land Use Regression model and explore the benefits of 3D city models in the field of particles distribution modelling, especially, by minimizing the number of parameters entered to the model and the good results that it has shown and explore the enhancement by combining both models.

The free accessibility to satellite images and geographic information systems (GIS), along with students' ability in handling multimedia on their own smartphones, enable the use of geotechnologies and multimedia resources in cartography teaching. This research has considered the contributions, limits, and possibilities of employing space technology, geoprocessing, and multimedia resources in geography classes for 7th-grade students in a public schools, in Sao Goncalo city, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Digital material has also been developed through the web, named "Mapeando Meu Rio (MMR)" or "Mapping My River (MMR)", which addresses the issue of the socio-environmental perception of the Alcantara river. The interest and involvement from the students throughout the different activities proposed on the mentioned material has been remarkable, especially in the use of multimedia resources and geotechnologies as a support material for environmental education. Based on the MMR evaluation, 7th-grade students have fallen short in their cartographic literacy at the end of their school year;this failure has been noticed both in their ability to make mental maps and in the handling of global positioning systems (GPS), Google Earth and ArcGIS Online. When requested to produce a spatial layout on their own, students were not able to use their basic knowledge of cartography, especially in the use of legends, geographical coordinates, and spatial orientation. Cartographic literacy should not be restrained to the syllabus of 6th-grade classes;instead, it should be considered as a means of communication to the understanding of the spatial dynamics during the whole course of elementary and high school. All geography-based activities are meant to give students a better understanding of their geographical space, in such a way that they may be able to build meaningful abstractions from their own reality-that is, from their own living place.

Satellite images revealed an extensive deformation on the southern slopes of the Nizke Tatry Mts. Range. This deformation can be ascribed to group of gravity nappes. Geologic survey, however, neither confirmed nor negated its existence. Therefore a detailed analysis of DEM and aerial images was carried out on the scale 1:35,000. Analytical interpretation led to the construction of a special morphotectonic and geodynamic scheme of the area, supported by the various geophysical data. The purpose of contemporary studies on the southern and southwestern slopes of Nizke Tatry Mts. and marginal parts of the Velka Fatra Mts. were to verify the important tectonic boundaries and deformation structures interpreted on satellite images by the geophysical, geomorphological and GPS data.
