A method is proposed to assist spatial planners in drawing with 'geographic' constraints. These constraints constrain graphic objects to have certain relationships that are not limited to be (Euclidean) geometric or topological but allowed to be dependent on the spatial variation of selected conditions (e.g., elevation and vegetation) characterizing an underlying geographic space. Just as in existing computer-aided design systems, the method accepts a manual change to a graphic object or constraint, and updates all affected graphic objects accordingly. The paper discusses how such a method is motivated and improves the graphic editing capability of geographic information systems, and identifies key issues for its implementation.

Changes are immanent to digital geographic vector datasets. While the majority of changes nowadays are quantitatively detectable by the use of geographic information systems their classification and impact assessment on a qualitative level with respect to specific data usage scenarios is often neglected. To close this gap, this work proposes a classification approach consisting of three parts: (1) a taxonomy for classifying quantitatively detectable edits in digital feature datasets (e.g. attribute or geometry changes), (2) a taxonomy for classifying edits into qualitative and therefore meaningful change types (e.g. feature revision or identity change) and (3) a mapping scheme providing the link from quantitative to qualitative classifications. In the context of a case study with OpenStreetMap history data the proposed classification approach is used to automatically detect and classify feature changes with respect to two feature types, namely streets and buildings, leading to a refined mapping scheme for two selected data usage scenarios, namely vehicle routing and map rendering. Results show the applicability of the approach, especially for assessing the impact of feature changes on different data usage scenarios, and provide a useful foundation for any change detection task in the context of geographic vector datasets.

An epidemic may be controlled or predicted if we can monitor the history of physical human contacts. As most people have a smart phone, a contact between two persons can be regarded as a handshake between the two phones. Our task becomes how to detect the moment the two mobile phones are close. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using the outdoor WLAN signals, provided by public Access Points, for off-line mobile phones collision detection. Our method does not require GPS coverage, or real-time monitoring. We designed an Android app running in the phone's background to periodically collect the outdoor WLAN signals. This data are then analysed to detect the potential contacts. We also discuss several approaches to handle the mobile phone diversity, and the WLAN scanning latency issue. Based on our measurement campaign in the real world, we conclude that it is feasible to detect the co-location of two phones with the WLAN signals only.

Main focus is put on the daily cycle of public transport intensity. In the city, commuting between places of housing and places of work one of the most important types of recurring organized spatial interactions. This is reflected also on the public transport which has tendency of creating communities as a reaction to demand. This feature of public transport in a city can be clearly identified through network analysis. Network approach recently developed in theoretical physics and related disciplines is still a promising direction of research also in the case of urban transportation studies. We use public transport system in a usual European city, a representative day in Bratislava, to demonstrate that it behaves systematically along the daily cycle in response to changing demand. Even through only basic description of data was calculated, the daytime rhythm, which we call the urban heartbeat, can be clearly recognized in the network structure. Though, the difference between intensity is clearly expressed, only the difference between night and day seems to have bigger statistical difference.

There is a long-running debate about how to best evaluate mobile location-based services with users: in the lab or in the field? In this paper, we investigate how to combine benefits of both methods using an Immersive Video Environment (IVE), providing a convincing audio-visual simulation of real-world settings. We contrast three methods to evaluate mobile navigation systems: one in the field, one in the lab and one "hybrid" solution (IVE). We found that using the IVE allowed us to identify nearly the same number of major usability problems as the field test. We also observed similarities between the field study and the IVE study in terms of participants' performance, which provides initial evidence that in some settings, an IVE study may yield results comparable to a field study.

Solar radiation is the main factor that must be considered when predicting solar systems energy output. Especially in built-up areas the use of Digital Surface Models (DSM) and analysis with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has gained popularity for these predictions in recent years. However, the identification of small objects and their impact in the shadowing of solar systems is a very important factor that cannot be entirely acquired by models from common available Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. Thus higher resolutions DSMs are required. These can be generated from photogrammetric point clouds derived from Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) based large scale image flights. This paper presents a comparison between a common available resolution DSM generated from standardized LiDAR data and a DSM with very high resolution from photogrammetric point clouds. The added value of using high-resolution DSMs for solar radiation estimation for PV rooftop-systems is discussed with a focus on elevation, slope, aspect and on the suitability for selection of usable roof-top areas. Although DSMs with resolutions up to 1 cm have been generated, the results show that a DSM of 25 cm is enough for considering all small roof-top objects that are relevant for estimation of solar radiation.

Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) has been used in various scientific domains and applications. Surveying Engineering is a field that has not yet exploited concepts like data and service sharing and reuse. This paper aims to suggest a framework that will support data sharing in Surveying Engineering by creating an online spatio-temporal information repository for land surveying projects. A data model to meet the needs for Surveying Engineering applications and accuracy requirements is introduced to facilitate the sharing of VGI information among Surveying Engineers. A fully functional prototype system has been developed and used to apply the proposed methodology in a large scale study undertaken by the Greek Ministry of Culture which involves the mapping of the historic center of Athens as part of the Archaeological Cadastre project. Results coming from data analysis indicate a substantial (similar to 60 %) error reduction and also significant productivity raise (similar to 25 %), while at the same time, the collected data are structured and saved in an online database, accessible by community users-professional Surveying Engineers who can in turn contribute to further improve the available data and services according to the principles of VGI applications.

The paper focuses on an investigation of the Modified Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) in a potential accessibility case study of the Mazovia region. Three different potential accessibility models were prepared based on the same theoretical background and coherent spatial data: a municipal model, a grid model and a population-weighted average travel time model. We concentrated on two main issues: the differences in the results produced by the three different models, and the impact of different methods of calculation of self-potential on these differences. The results show significant differences in accessibility values produced by the three models tested. The municipal model produced underestimated values of potential accessibility indicator in all spatial units. The differences are first of all a consequence of taking into consideration the densely populated peripheral districts of Warsaw that are 'visible' in grid-based models, but 'not visible' (i.e. averaged) in the central-location oriented municipal model. As a consequence, the total travel time between the average (population-weighted) origin-destination grid nodes is shorter than that calculated at the municipal level and the potential accessibility values are higher in both grid-based models. However, in general, the main cause of the differences of accessibility values observed is not the self-potential but rather the complexity of transportation and land use relations between neighbouring municipalities.

Today, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is mainly used in architecture. Typically, a BIM model contains detailed geometric and semantic information for design evaluation, simulation, and construction of the building. If, as on the regional and city levels, more than one building is considered, the information content of detailed BIM models might be too high. For applications like noise simulation or emergency management, representing buildings as block models, reduced outer-shell models or simplified indoor models are more suitable. Such models are typically found in Geospatial Information System (GIS) applications. This paper describes a process for BIM building models to extract different generalized representations for buildings and building elements. As an example, the definitions for such representations are based on the LoD concept of CityGML.

Researches on spatial cognition have shown human often need landmarks for an easy and successful wayfinding. For indoor navigation systems, landmark information is also important to improve their usability. However relatively little effort has been devoted to indoor landmarks from either theoretical side or practical side. In this paper we introduced several relevant theories, i.e. spatial cognition, affordance theory and space syntax, as basis to elaborate visual, semantic and structural salience indicators. The proposed indicators are used to form a computational indoor landmark extraction method. The feasibility of this method is proved by a case study.
